3* Isle of Wight Special | 3* |
---|
Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:7:45 am |
Start Location:Lymington |
Description:The annual IoW club special.After last years variations, this year we are reverting to the traditional route round the island - following those familiar official blue signs. . It is quite a tough route being approx. 107k with lots of ups and downs, (approx. 1,250m of climbing in total). We will catch the 08.15 ferry from Lymington to Yarmouth. Please be there half an hour before to allow time to park, assemble and board. I would strongly suggest you book your tickets via www.wightlink.co.uk as soon as possible. (Once you have checked there is a place on the ride). There is a note on the website that foot passengers are limited on some ferries. When you book you have to include a return ferry time. Please select 17.05 - albeit that it is usually possible to change this which will give us some flexibility. Most past participants have chosen to have breakfast on the ferry (bring your own or they do good toast!) and this makes sense as the plan is not to have a formal cafe stop until an early lunch in Bembridge. [Our normal cafe has changed hands again and now looks more reasonably priced with good reviews]. We will have a shortish stop somewhere (yet to be determined) between Yarmouth and Bembridge - but so we can be flexible please bring your own snack . The highlight of the afternoon (apart from the cycling and the company) will be a stop on the beach in Cowes (weather permitting) for an ice cream. Please let me know if you intend to join. The ride has filled up quickly in prior years. For safety the ride will be limited in numbers to around 12 riders at the ride leaders discretion after assessing forecast etc. |

Riders:Barry StantonJohn Tranter Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce LeeAnn Norris Paul Smith Peter Brodie Sharon Bedford Riders = 8 Report:Sometimes a ride just works - and this was one of them.The weather gods were kind to us and the sun made everyone smile. It was so warm one member of the team actually went paddling at lunchtime! We found a new coffee stop at Niton (slightly busy but great coffee) and then had lunch by the beach at Bembridge (excellent service from the young staff - who even brought out tables and chairs from the back for us so we could sit outside). Perfect timing for the return ferry - from which we saw a Paddle Steamer and the Red Arrows. We followed the official round the island route (mostly). Just a few minor plotting errors from the ride leader - but the group took these in great spirits. Only downside was that a small part of the route appeared to be a cut through for cars with some not so polite drivers. Might look for a deviation next time. What a great day out with great company. | ||

Tuesday Evening 1* Ride | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:Old Mill Hall |
Description:For our last Evening outing of the season, a tour of the vale visiting the three village greens at Goosey, Charney Bassett and Lyford. Lights required as the evenings are drawing in.Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of 10-15 miles (16-24km) at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph (13-16kph), following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Riders:Alan FisherAngie Fisher Anke Otto Carin Tranter John Stamp Lorna Swanton Michael Tayler Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:What a wonderful way to finish our season of Evening 1* rides with a perfect sunny evening and a lovely convivial group of 8 Tuesday regulars. It was the warmest evening that I have ridden all year (and such a contrast to last week) but with the air cooling in the lanes as the sun went down, the temperature was just ideal.As we were heading out towards Denchworth into the setting sun, we all took the precaution of putting on our rear lights for visibility. Despite the warmth, there was a distinctly autumnal feel with the hedges brimming with red hawberries and blackberries. We followed the route as planned at relaxed 1* pace, stopping for a rest and natter by the olde cross stump in Denchworth, on Goosey green, then by Charney green and finally by the small green in Lyford. Unfortunately, the sunset was rather hidden behind trees but there were fine skies to behold. Michael had kindly swept on the way out, so we reversed roles at Lyford and Michael led us back to Grove as the evening darkened around us. It was really quite dark as a happy group returned to the hall, after some of the 3* group and just before the 2*s. It was with mixed feelings that we said our goodbyes to head home - it is always sad to reach the end of the Tuesday season Thanks to all for your company this evening. Thanks to Michael for sweeping and co-leading tonight and a big thank you to all that have led rides over the course of our summer 1* programme. Despite a few inclement weather cancellations it has been a good year and it has been a real pleasure to welcome a number of new, now regular riders. Don't forget that our 1* rides programme continues throughout the year on Thursday mornings and with our monthly ride on the third Saturday of each month. Do keep an eye on the website and weekly newsletter for details. Hope to see you all again soon. | ||

Ride and Stride for Historic Churches 2023 | 2* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Old Mill Hall |
Description:The second Saturday in September sees the annual Ride and Stride event in aid of the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust (further details at: https://ohct.org.uk/ride-stride/ ). The idea is to either stride or ride (awheel or ahoof) to visit as many Oxfordshire churches as you like between 10am and 6pm. Many churches will be open (thanks to the generosity of many volunteers) making for an interesting, sociable ride and a great day out. Discovering historic gems, often in hidden corners of local villages, away from the beaten track, is one of the great charms of this event.The plan is for an all-day ride at 2* pace (8-20km/h or 11-13mph) covering around 44 miles with not too many hills and (obviously) a lot of stops. Some will be brief and some longer depending on particular points of interest and, where churches are open, the chance to look around and the temptation of refreshments. We will start as per usual at 9:30 from OMH and this year we will head westwards to visit churches in the north-west of the vale and south of the Thames. The provisional route (below) will visit about 20 churches including Coleshill, Buscot, Faringdon and the isolated church of St Michaels and all angels at Eaton Hastings. We will stop for a café or pub lunch along the way. It's not compulsory to do the whole ride and the planned route includes a shorter loop option visiting up to 13 churches around the vale. We can advise on alternative routes home. You could also potentially join us en-route too. For those who fancy the whole day, we expect to reach our last church just before 6pm. And we'll expect to be back in Grove before 7pm - but lights recommended. Although participants are encouraged to seek sponsorship, we normally make a donation. This is split between the OHCT and a participating church you can nominate. Please contact me for more information and/or please let me know if you’d like to come. It's an interesting and fun day out and a very social day awheel. Do join us for some or all of the day. |
||
Report:Well it was hot!! But once again Ride & Stride provided a thoroughly enjoyable and different day out. We rode at a leisurely pace and took a slightly shorter route than originally planned so as not to overtax ourselves given the conditions. Many of the churches were open, providing sanctuaries of shade, coolness and much appreciated refreshments. Over the course of 8 hours 20 minutes and 36 miles of riding, we managed to visit 19 churches; 20 stops in total when you throw in lunch at Faringdon coffee house. Highlights for me were: the warm welcome, cold drinks and wall paintings at Baulking; the unexpected chance to see inside the Friends Meeting House in Faringdon; and the small hidden church at Little Coxwell. My thanks to Lorna, Anke, Julie and Mike for being such good company and it was a pleasure to welcome Mike J back on a club ride. Our thanks also to all the volunteers we met on the day and to all those who organised refreshments. We couldn't have done it without them.P.S. We got back to Grove at 6pm just in time to allow Anke to sign in at St John's and the Methodist churches in Grove, which she had missed in the morning. The evening light was beautiful and I was keen to make it 20 churches, so fuelled by carrot cake from Grove Methodists, I continued into Wantage for a solo tour of the 5 churches in town, making it 24 in total. | ||

Four of us set off from Old Mill Hall, meeting Sarah and Tim in Charlton before heading off into Kingsgrove for our exploration of the new estate. Tim led us round to the new Woodland Walk, with its impressive wide and smooth path, quite a contrast to the lumps and bumps of the Icknield Greenway further on. After the slope up from the bridge, just as we were catching our breath, Susie appeared on her way up from West Hendred and joined us as we looped up to Ginge, along to Betterton and down to Ardington for coffee at the Grocer Chef. Out via Charney Bassett and back via Lyford with an optional 2 mile loop to Hinton Waldrist passing through one of my favourite hidden places... |
||
Report:With quite a few of our regular 1* riders away, a select group of 5 for this afternoon's outing. We had a very pleasant ride out to Longworth admiring the multitude of berries in the hedgerows and noting the early autumn tints along the lanes. As is customary, with stopped by the walnut tree in Denchworth and on the green at Charney Bassett for a rest and natter.We crossed the A420 at the western Southmoor junction. One eastbound driver, turning off, very kindly stopped before the turning box and patiently waited for the westbound carriageway to clear, to allow us all to cross safely. Thank you . We did indeed include the optional loop to Hinton Waldrist and after touring the village took the bridleway across to Longworth. We duly stopped by the pond to admire the view of Longworth church after passing the manor house. All new to Alan. Light rain was falling as we approached the Blue Boar. Sadly their coffee machine wasn't working and as they said they had no kettle it was cold drinks all round. The raindrops came and went while we were enjoying our drinks on the patio, but were never too heavy to drive us inside. For the return leg we crossed the A420 on the bridleway bridge, after which the gentle downhill from Southmoor to the river Ock, on one of the best road surfaces in the area, was delightfully easy. All too soon we were back in Grove, just before 5pm and heading our separate ways. Thanks everyone for your friendly company on a very easy ride to lead. | ||

Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres required and good lights when it gets dark (‘get you home’ lights in Spring/Autumn). We are keen to welcome new riders and can make recommendations or have spare lights to borrow if you let us know. Dark, cold and wet - we’ll ride in any two. But please let us know if you are coming so we can tell you if we decide to cancel due to bad weather or other reasons. |

Report:Certainly feeling like autumn today, but managing to avoid any real rain for a very pleasant ride south with great wildlife spotting now we are properly into the dusk.We rode up Lark Hill, then over towards Farnborough and Fawley for a gradual clockwise loop and finishing down Jolly Green and Goddards Brook, although with some relatively unused trails that DB found for us. Our wildlife spotting tally was: * A fox near Fawley * Two stags on the Ridgeway * A badger crossing the trail down along Goddards Brook | ||

Reasonable weather too, although the wind was niggly and cold - hints of autumn!It was a great group and there was lots of chat and banter as we made our way to Appleton with no problems. As always, good food and coffee at the Community Shop and then a slight headwind drag to get us back to Grove again. Thanks to all for your company. | ||

Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader.80km (50 miles) touring ride. Staying relatively local today - exploring some of my favourite roads on the nearby Downs. Early lunch at 50k (30 miles) at Priscillas Kitchen in East Garston. |

Riders:Chris BaileyDes Higgs Eddie Little Jo Little John Tranter Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Riders = 7 Report:It worked well staying local as traffic not too bad for a Saturday. It also allowed us to enjoy some of the lovely roads in the nearby downs - not to mention some of the spectacular views across autumnal landscapes.Quite a bit of climbing before the cafe (Priscilla's Kitchen - as good as ever) but the only significant climb after our stop was Lambourn to Ashbury and with a tailwind it was delightful. Earlier start and good pace meant we were back in Wantage by early afternoon. | ||
