Riders:Chris WaltersDavid Smith David Talboys Frank Schroer Paul Jarvis Richard Preece Robin Tucker Ursula Hallam Riders = 8 Weather:Report:The ride started with eight riders heading out on a cold sunny winters day ! Heading into a strong head wind we made good progress keeping in a group. Soon after Faringdon in between Radcot and Clanfield Frank had a problem with a collapsing front wheel ! Which he later told us was free ! No such thing as a free lunch i would say !After trying to help we decided it was to much of a major job and left Frank at the pub in Clanfield and headed of towards Bampton where we decided to stop for refreshment a good choice of Chris . Richard decided not to stop and made his own way back. Fully refuelled the remaining six riders made there way back to grove . A big thanks to Dave and Ursula who went back to collect Frank and delivered him back to Wantage before there journey home. Ps Noted Robin new Scott road bike ! Fast up the hills . | ||

Report:Another night for the hardy - strong winds and the threat of rain later. But, it was also pub night which gave us something to aim at. In the end, 2 of us made it, and 3 provided some kind of excuse.We started easy, taking the cycle paths and road to Charlton. Then up Lark Hill and we started to feel the wind, and at the top we turned right into it. First small slog was across to the A338 - climbing the hill on it was light relief by comparison. Then we got to the Ridgeway, turned right and the real hard work started. 5 miles along squishy trails into a 20mph+ headwind. With occasional trail-wide puddles of uncertain depth. We pushed on to Sparsholt Field, and got payback time in the run down to the B4507 - it was running very sweetly indeed. Then we picked up the roads, a path out the back of Challow and sped up noticeably as we approached the Fox at Denchworth. We managed to beat the rain! Good to see that several others had made it - JT had even arrived by bike, though he looked a lot less muddy than we did! | ||

Riders:Brian HipwellEdith Hipwell Judith Agnew Lorna Swanton Matthew Quartermain Phil Jeffery Sara Smith Stephen Quartermain Steve Boreham Steve Burr Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Riders = 12 Report:Good turnout of 12 of us for today, all extra keen following the cancellation of the January 1* ride!However, debate firstly re a tea stop, either a pub in Kingston Lisle (no cakes!) or get back to Grove for this. Rang tea shop who advised closed at 3pm! This seemed to be preferred option (cakes always essential!) so we targeted getting back in time, taking short cut missing out Uffington, only to find when I rang tea shop again they had had an evacuation due to fire nearby! Good ole Fox at Denchworth saved the day! A nice enjoyable ride, weather bright, and not cold once we got going! Felt like the start of the season for those of us who, admittedly, had not been out for a while... Thanks everybody | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:David Smith |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Tour of the HillsA hilly 82km ride to Hungerford via Lambourn, Aldbourne, Ramsbury and Froxfield. After a short lunch stop at either the Tutti Pole or Azuza cafe, both in Hungerford High Street, we will return to Wantage via Kintbury, Bagnor, Chieveley, Peasemore and finally Chain Hill. Hopefully there will be plenty of time for a coffee in Wantage Costa at the end. Pace will be to suit the group, but will probably be at the lower end of 3* pace. I may shorten the route a little on the day depending upon weather conditions. Lights may be required. |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Smith David Talboys Frank Schroer John Tranter Katherine Boyce Ken Pelton Nick Dunton Ursula Hallam Riders = 9 Weather:Report:9:24 on a cold and foggy morning and the usual discussion ensued as to whether we would bother riding if no-one else turned up Luckily, out of the mist, Nick emerged, declaring himself out of hibernation and swiftly followed by several more riders, so it was ride on!Riding through the Letcombes, our first test was Hackpen Hill at the top of which we stopped to admire the spectacular views of the fog. To be fair the sun was trying to burn through as we rode up the hill, just needed to try a bit harder. Down into Lambourn wasn’t as fast as usual with the wind trying to push us back up the hill in places but Aldbourne seemed to be reached very quickly. Turning towards Ramsbury, it was only a short while before we had to say goodbye to Katherine and John who needed to be back in Wantage and the rest of the group started to really warm up on Spring Hill. After that it was plain sailing to a sunny Hungerford and paninis, cakes and coffee in Azuza cafĂ©. After lunch, it was spring sunshine all the way through the undulations of Kintbury, Stockcross, Winterbourne, Chieveley, and Peasemore. A combination of hedge trimmings and winter debris on the roads culminated in a couple of punctures but with a pooling of ‘interesting items for fixing punctures’, waiting in the sun for the tube changes wasn’t a chore. Finally, emerging onto the B4494, it was every man for himself in the deserved swoopy descent down Chain Hill, meeting up again at Costa for an afternoon cuppa. On the short side at 50 miles, but, with over 1000m of climbing, not a bad way to come out of hibernation. | ||

Not likely to be very hilly.A fairly flat ride of roughly 60km (38 Miles) with only one modest and doable hill of note, rising out of the Thames Valley up into Buckland. ||
Riders:Adrian WestAndy Pixton Chris Gray David Bridge David Smith John Tranter Richard Delacour Richard Preece Stephen Quartermain Steve Swanton Ursula Hallam Riders = 11 Report:A bitterly cold day (freezing temperatures) with the first half of the ride going straight into a Northerly headwind. Chris was sporting his Summer 2013 shorts while the rest of us wore several layers and he didn't complain of cold once! A lovely tea stop to thaw out the arctic explorers/ cyclists and then a pleasant ride through snow flurries back to Grove via the West of Eynsham and the hill up to Buckland. A very pleasant ride with no incidents although the potholes on most roads have become life threatening. I hope they get fixed soon. Well done all who attended. | ||

Report:With the weather having been dry for a couple of weeks, it looked a good night to explore some new tracks.Big mistake! Things started well - we rode over a slightly boggy Crab Hill, and went straight up the steep slope of 'sheep hill' near Baron Wantage's memorial. Then a zigzag and across a field towards Farnborough, which is where we hit the first really muddy patch. This we struggled through only to find that David had punctured. Having fixed that we were heading east out of Farnborough with 2 choices - the road or a bridleway condition unknown. RIchard made the decision by surging off down the track and it got muddier and muddier to the point where it was hard even to lift out mud encased bikes. Eventually we got out and rolled down the hill to the road between Farnborough and West Ilsley, probably about an hour later than I'd hoped. And then David found his other tyre was punctured too! He fixed that and we climbed over the Ridgeway, down to Betterton and took the road and cyclepaths back to Wantage, arriving somewhat later than 10pm. I've had to guess the mileage because the mud moved my computer's magnet part way through the ride. To be honest, it felt more like 40 miles! Gosh, what fun! | ||
