Weather Conditions: Overcast/Dry
Ride Leader: Stephen Quartermain
Number of Riders: 21
Distance: 12.5 miles, front eight riders covered approx 15 miles.

Twas the last Tuesday evening ride of 2003 so I hoped it would a memorable one. It was also my first ride as leader. My cunning plan to lead the fast/long ride group up Court Hill and onwards to Farnborough before returning home was scrapped due to low light conditions. The plan was quickly adapted to lead all 21 riders on a shorter route. No short/long ride option this week.

The route left Grove past the kebab van to join the main road in the direction of White Horse hill. Just out of Wantage we took the turning to Letcombe Regis where all riders waited at the bottom of Court Hill

Report:
In the morning one group of riders did the Penhydd Trail, whilst the rest of us had a go at White's Level. White's Level was a very hard climb and we looked forward to the descent with trepidation - it had Matthew's front teeth last time! Two minor casualties later we were heading back to the visitors centre for lunch and a chat with the other group. One casualty in the other group - Barry decided to have a lie down on a tricky descent.

In the afternoon, we all headed out to the Wall splitting about half way up the climb into two groups. The first group sweltered to the top before flying back down in pursuit of a couple of guys on downhill bikes. Barry had an argument with a tree, with predictable consequences - no real harm done.

At the end we all met up at the car park and smiles were all around. Mike said it was the best riding he'd ever done and I couldn't argue with that.

Report:
My attempts to lead the section to Barbury Castle failed on two counts, first I couldnt actually lead the ride as I still had Tom with me at the start, and secondly the group decided to cut the Barbury climb out.

Thanks to Steve B for leading the hilly loop through Ramsbury and Ogbourne St George, I caught up at the True Heart Bishopstone for an excellent roast and a slightly dubious pint of Bass, we then looped back through Shrivenham and Goosey to avoid any more hills.

Someone said they did 52m. Sounds about right!

My next ride will be to Barbury Castle.

A Bit of Rough
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:

Riders:

Riders = 7
Report:
The last "official" off-road ride of the season saw 7 riders, including newcomer Robin, heading eastwards on a mild and occasionally sunny afternoon. Despite some recent rain the conditions underwheel remained very dry and fast.
Leaving Wantage via Post Office Lane and Trinder Road brought cries of "I haven't been this way before!" from behind. We climbed Larkhill before turning onto the gallops to complete the climb to the newly resurfaced Ridgeway. For most of the ride to Bury Down and the W. Ilsley Road, one (and in some cases) two of the rutted tracks have been flattened out to give a much smoother ride. The surface is a mixture of chalk and flint, so it will be interesting to see how it fares in the wet. The group was favourably impressed. There remain many adjoining ruts and ridges for those looking for a more technical ride.
With a tail wind, the ride along the Ridgeway was delightful and mainly downhill. Above Blewbury we turned off left onto the Fair Mile. The descent of the potholed track down to the A417 was excellent. We crossed the road heading towards Cholsey and shortly turned off left to join the track to Aston Tirrold. This climbed sharply on broken tarmac and then descended past a secluded farm complete with duck pond and raised barn. After a brief on-road tour of the twin villages, we turned left by Aston Upthorpe church onto the bridleway past Blewburton hill with its hill fort to Blewbury.
The A417 to Upton was our longest on-road stretch. From Upton we climbed up the track to Chilton and then headed to the Garden Centre for a well-deserved tea. The enormous slices of carrot cake merit special mention.
We returned to Wantage along the Icknield getting back just before 5.
