Report:
Well, a great turn-out for a grey February day. The group kept together well and we made good time, averaging 14mph. We enjoyed the usual good service and great home made cakes at the Faringdon Coffee Shop before heading for home in the gathering gloom. There was a certain friskiness amongst some, no doubt related to the imminent kick-off of the rugby. This was rudely interrupted by a pothole-induced double puncture for JT in Denchworth, 2 miles from home. However, a slick team swung into action and it felt a bit like a Formula 1 pit stop. Thanks to all for a great ride.

Sun Feb 21st 2010
Regular Wantage Ride
Leader:
Jan McCabe
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Monthly all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, riding pace 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

Ride will be shortish (but at 50 miles it is the longest your ride leader has done for a while!) but a bit hilly!
Plan is to warm up on chain hill, then cut across to the A338 for a short bit of main road to Shefford, and then wind our way via E.Garston and Ramsbury to lunch at Marlborough. After lunch we'll retrace our steps a short distance, then head for Aldbourne, then pass thro Baydon and Lambourn, over the hill, and back through the Letcombes to Wantage. http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=102210.

Report:
8 of us left Wantage market place, by the time I'd got part way up Chain Hill the numbers were reduced to 5! It had started raining as we'd ascended and Ginny, Tony and Richard decided they didn't fancy getting cold and wet. Unfortunately for them, but luckily for the rest of us, the rain only lasted about 10 minutes!
Our numbers increased again when Mavis and Rex joined us in East Garston, but unfortunately just after this Rex got the first of his 3 punctures and called for his sag wagon.
Rex rejoined us along with Teresa, Sue and Lou for lunch at The Bear (I hadn't been there for a few years, but they still do the same bacon and brie burger which I can highly recommend, the jackets, baguettes and pie others had also looked very good)
After lunch the sun came out and we enjoyed blues skies as we cycled up and down a few hills back home.
It was my first ride for a while with the group, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, and hope to become a more regular rider in the future!

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove 2*
Leader:
John Talbot
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Monthly 45-55km (30 - 40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of ~18km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new riders in winter months.

Proposed route will be eastwards to Wallingford and back. Via Steventon, Milton, Sutton Courtenay, Appleford, Long Wittenham, Little Wittenham, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Wallingford, South Moreton, Didcot, Harwell and the Hendreds. Tea-stop will be in Wallingford. A generally flat 35 miles, two short climbs at Steventon and Little Wittenham. We might use a short stretch of NCN 5 at Long Wittenham but there is a tarmac alternative if required on the day.

Report:
Eleven riders set off from Grove as it started to spot with rain. We headed to Steventon where we were joined by Dave Wynn to make us a round dozen. The rain started in vengeance as we headed up Steventon Hill and down through Milton, Sutton Courtenay and Appleford. It was really miserable but admirably everyone stuck with it.

The rain eased as we headed up to Wittenham Clumps and the Sun began to shine as we threaded our way through the thatched cottages of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell. We headed to Wallingford town centre and an excellent tea-stop at Bloc Brazilian where we could warm up around the big table in the upstairs room.

We took a direct route back through South Moreton and Didcot town centre. At Harwell a couple of riders headed off home and Maurice's front tyre started to blow bubbles in a puddle. We split into two groups as one repaired the puncture and the other headed off to Rowstock, through the Hendreds and down past Lain's Barn back to Grove.

A good ride and great company. Well done to everyone for sticking with it through the rain at the beginning for the reward of a little Sun and a dry run home!
