Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

A very straightforward classic loop through the Vale to kick off the Tuesday 2* season. Out to Denchworth, along to West Hanney then up what may be the smoothest road in Oxfordshire to Southmoor. A nice gentle glide back down to Charney Bassett, Denchworth again and home.

No hills at all (unless you count the Denchworth railway bridge, which we don't).

16 miles, so should get us back just around sunset. But - lights are essential!

A good group gathered and we noted the gathering apocalyptic clouds. We laughed at them and carried on regardless. Sadly, this wasn't a sufficient plan and it started to hail slightly. Then quite a lot more. Oh well. It was very wet and very cold but everyone stuck to their task and got around magnificently.

Thanks to all for being there!

First 3* evening ride of the season. An 18.5 mile flat spin out to Longworth and Fyfield via Charney and returning via Lyford. What could possibly go wrong?!
With 16 riders, an excellent turnout despite a dubious weather forecast we set off in 2 groups, the first led by me with Kath sweeping and the second led by Yvonne with Eddie sweeping. Our group ride was straightforward despite battling the elements; rain, hail and sleet. A temperature of -1 was recorded on 2 Garmins (so it must had been correct!)
Unfortunately Yvonne's group ride was not so straightforward. After delays with 2 punctures the ride was sensibly cut short as the group were getting cold and running out of light.
A reminder of Group Riding Etiquette: If you wish to leave the ride at any point you must inform the ride leader or sweeper that you wish to do so, not simply ride off. Ride leaders have a duty of care towards their group and therefore must be kept informed of who is in their group.
Despite this I hope everybody was glad they rode out, that warm glow of virtuousness (or chilblains) for having braved the elements...
Thank you to Yvonne for leading the second group and Kath and Eddie for sweeping.

3* Saturday Half Day Ride 3*
Leader:
Katherine Boyce
Start Time:
12:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.

PLEASE NOTE THE 12.30 START

A trip to the flatlands of the Thames! Out via Fyfield, Farmoor and Enynsham before skirting Witney at Cogges where we'll stop for cake. Returning via Stanton Harcourt, Standlake and then an explore of the Thames floodplain around Cote. The one hill is up to Buckland and then back to Grove via Park Lane.

As this is such a flat ride that's a touch over 75km, and is likely to be at the brisker end of 3*.

A good group gathered at lunchtime at OMH, it was nice to see Nigel over from Wallingford and to welcome Jenny and Pete on their first rides with us this season. It was also lovely to see Terry, not ride fit but providing us with our own personal escort service!

An uneventful ride out to Cogges, bit of a headwind but nothing too bad. We had to be patient at the A420 but we all got across safely. Pete's new bike showed impressive acceleration :).

It's always nice to go over Eynsham Toll Bridge without having to pay. We then wended our way through the pretty village of South Leigh.

We found our way to Cogges (thanks to the signposts rather than the leaders ride planning) and the café was very efficient with a goodly selection of cakes and bacon sandwiches.

With only one impatient driver on the quiet back road to Stanton Harcourt, we had time to admire the views. From Standlake we took the even quieter road through Shifford and Cote and along the Great Ditch to the Buckland road. The only hill of the ride was soon conquered (not so soon by the leader ;) ).

The A420 was very quiet on the return crossing, a slight pause in Stanford in the Vale and then we were back at OMH. Another great afternoon ride. Many thanks to Ursula for sweeping and to the good natured group for a lovely afternoon.

Description:
At the start of this ride, we will cover bike set up and basic techniques to make off-roading fun. We'll do a 3 mile 'training ride' then an optional short ride up to about 10 miles on local tracks, with frequent breaks. This ride is ideal if you have wanted to take your bike off-road, but been a bit unsure.

Weather:

Report:
We fulfilled our purpose today, with two non-regular off-road riders enjoying the delights of the trails, and picking up a few tips on the way.

Brian was a little nervous that his hybrid with gravel tyres and mudguards would not be up to it, but it was dry and the tyres were 40mm. We lowered the pressures to about 40psi to soften the bumps and add grip and he had no problems at all.

Our first move out of town was up Lark Hill. This provided practice in choosing lines - dodging between the puddles. Then it was choosing between ruts and ridges in the dip, and then we climbed the main hill - choosing carefully to avoid the steep slippery chalk and take the gently rising track on the right.

From there we worked our way up through Bitham woods to the Ridgeway. The track by the gallops was in good condition (sometimes hooves take a toll). Mist meant the views from the top were not great, but we made good progress to Scutchamers Knob and descended to the corner of Harwell campus.

Next it was everyone's favourite section twisting through the woods. Great for practicing 'looking ahead' and bike control.

From there, we took to the NCN/Sustran route back to Wantage. At the start Brian said he was in for the 3 mile version, but somehow he seemed to have enjoyed all 15!

A beautiful morning for a leisurely cycle around Denchworth, Lyford and Charney Basset.

We were joined by two new riders Tom Craig and his daughter Islay who was just 8 years of age. As this was a first ride out on roads for Isla she did exceptionally well and the 9.5 mile route was completed in just over on hour and a quarter. Points of interest, Red Kite, lambs, and a woodpecker!

We were blessed with sunshine and not too much wind which was just perfect. After a brief stop for Easter eggs at Charney Bassett village green we were blown to the Cafe in Grove for a well deserved coffee and cake stop!

Some of our regular riders split at Charney for a slightly longer ride with a stop off at Stanford for coffee. Thanks to all riders for their support and encouragement for our newcomers.

Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.

We haven't headed eastwards for a while and I've heard good reports of the new Farmhouse Bakery and CafÃᅵ© at Steventon. Plus there is a new cyclepath to explore...

After climbing past Lain's Barn we'll pick up the Sustrans route 544 through to Harwell, take a diversion through the site before picking 544 up again over Hagbourne hill through Upton and on to the edge of Didcot. We'll then track westwards through the Hagbournes, Harwell village and Milton Hill before dropping down to Steventon.
From coffee, we'll returm to Grove across Cow Common, the Hanneys and Denchworth. A round trip of about 30 miles.

We'll be using a number of off-road cycle tracks some with smooth pavement, but some rougher including the Ginge farm track and the Icknield Way into Harwell, and the Upton-Didcot cycle path on the old railway embankment (with superb panoramic views). These are fine on a touring bike but if you are concerned about using tnem on a road bike there are road alternatives - please let me know.

I will lead a 'club ride' group for those who would like to ride together. This is a very good route and combines a nice 100km course with remarkably little climbing. A frosty morning but a cloudless blue sky was a great backdrop to the 100 or so riders setting off on this excellently organised Audax. A group of eight of us decided to ride together as the 'ride within the ride'. It is a lovely route and we enjoyed the back roads up to Cogges cafe in Witney and then did a bit of climbing in the foothills of the Cotswolds to the furthest point in Chipping Norton. We did our lunch stop at the little cafe in Chadlington which was, as always, great. By then the skies had clouded over and we had a cold easterly wind to contend with. But we were soon back on familiar roads, conquered the last hill at Buckland and were back in time for the last of the excellent Flexicare refreshments - thanks, Katherine!

Hurrah for Secondary Leaders, as the crowds gathered, it was good to know that Jo and I would be leading a group each :)

First week up a big hill this season and what a week to pick! Slightly cool (except on top of Hackpen Hill) and enough of a light mist to make the views magical. Add in a muntjac, a glimpse of a barn owl and that's a lot of ticks on the nature list ;).

Our minds were focussed by the fading light, which ensured that we kept a good pace despite the rolling nature of the route. Thanks to first time rider Richard for ensuring we all crossed the Springline road safely after descending Blowingstone Hill.

Eddie and Andy did sterling work as sweeps and of course Jo ensured her group enjoyed the ride as much as the group I led.

All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

We will go along the spring line to Ashbury and then through Aldbourne to Chilton Foliat, up to Great Shefford and then onto Boxford where we will have lunch at The Bell. We will then go through Winterbourne, Chieveley, Worlds End and Hampstead Norreys before East and West Ilsley and the lovely finish down Chain Hill.
Unfortunately Saddleback Farm is closed on Easter Day, so please make sure you bring enough energy bars/food/drink to get you back to Wantage.

Please could you let Jo or Eddie know if you want to come, as we have to give The Bell at Boxford a rough idea of numbers. However, please do not let that stop you turning up on the day - we can always fit extras in.

99.5km ride with 1095m of climbing. The ride will be taken at an average 3* pace and, as always, we will regroup at the top of each hill.

Description:
Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.

For our first outing of the season, a gentle ride to the large village green at Goosey and back via Denchworth a round trip of about 9 miles. We'll stop to admire the green and the views from Goosey. It can be cold in the lanes at this time of year so please bring an extra layer. Gloves recommended.

Report:
A gentle start to our season of easy evening rides saw 5 of us head out to Goosey via Denchworth. It was nice to see Sheena out again and Susan on her first ride of the year.
Birds soon became a theme of the evening. We heard and saw peacocks in Denchworth, song birds were in good voice in the hedges along the lanes, we disturbed lapwings in passing near Asti stud and saw swallows and numerous jackdaws on the green at Goosey.
We stopped for a rest outside the little church at the far corner of the green and made a brief exploration of the churchyard, the church itself no longer being open. We noted a very large bird box on an overlooking oak - presumably for an owl. A surprisingly large pile of debris beneath an old nest under the eaves of the church, suggested an extremely inefficient nest builder!
As it was a pleasantly mild evening and everyone was feeling fit, we took an extended loop back via North Denchworth. Along the Charney Bassett road we were passed by three time-triallists in quick succession wearing numbers 1, 2 and 4; so what had happened to no. 3?
We arrived back in Grove in good time before sunset after a mellow ride. Thanks everyone for your company .

The weather seemed to threaten rain before we set off, but true to the forecast the evening was fine and dry. A steady ride out towards Southmoor followed by the foot/cycle bridge over the A420. A short stop in Hinton Waldrist by the church - and near the site of the former castle followed by the gentle downhill to Charney Basset via Pewsey. Crossing the A420 again was not so difficult as the traffic had eased by this time of the evening. We had been informed of a cycling time trial taking place along part of our route back from Charney Bassett but we didn't meet any of the competitors - At least until the 3* ride caught us up between Denchworth railway bridge and Grove when some riders sped back.

A close evening under ominous skys, 5 optimistic 4*'ers gathered at Old Mill Hall trusting in the forecasts and not bringing wet weather attire.
Early signs were not good, with the smell of rain in the air, cloud bursts were spotted over to the west, exactly where we were heading!
As we swooshed through Denchworth, we collected a lost and visibly confused Paul Jarvis to make it a tidy 6.
We pressed on towards the rides twin peaks of Kingston Lisle and the menacing Dragon Hill (one of Oxfordshire's top 10 dogging spots, according to todays Oxford Mail). No great differences in form today, so we quickly regrouped and descended back into the Vale, where we happened upon not 1, but 2 other CUK groups enjoying the warm and muggy evening.
We said goodbye (hi) to Phil at Hatford and continued onward towards Charney Bassett where we raised a glass (beer) in celebration of Franks' birth anniversary.
A nice time was had by all, and happily, we stayed dry on the outside.

2* Saturday Half Day Ride - OXFORD SPECIAL 2*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
WEATHER UPDATE: Storm Hannah is passing through but the worst will be past in the morning. Looks like the ride will be mostly dry, but with a strong westerly wind. This means we will be wind-assisted to Oxford, but will have some work to do into a headwind on the way back. So - the ride is ON!

Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.

This is a 2* ride that has pretty much everything! We head out via Charney Bassett and discover the nifty Southmoor footbridge - the safest way to cross the A420. Then we follow the quiet road parallel to the A420 all the way to Cumnor and swoop down Cumnor Hill to the edge of Oxford. From there we utilise a a super cunning bike-safe transit of the A420/A34 Botley junction to head north for a lovely circuit around Port Meadow before heading back into town via Wolvercote to my very own St Cross College for a VIP coffee stop. You can only get in if you are a friend of the Bursar, with catering from the fine cafes of St Giles. Then there is more fun with my most cunning bike track and riverside route out of town to the west, before the climb of Cumnor Hill. We head for home via Wootton, Tubney and Fyfield.

At just over 40 miles, it is a long ride for an afternoon, but we have a few short cut options in the final section which we can use if necessary. I don't expect to be back before 5.30pm. Having said that, there are very few hills and we will stick to a steady 2* pace.

Report:
A lot of scrutinising of weather forecasts went on beforehand, but in the end we avoided the worst of Storm Hannah. My goodness, it was a bit breezy though!

As always, it's surprising and encouraging to see so many people prepared to turn out in less than ideal weather and a good group gathered. The route to Oxford was largely wind assisted and we enjoyed the loop around Port Meadow and the intriguing sights of leafy north Oxford before our coffee stop at St Cross College, with catering from Green's Cafe.

Suitably refuelled, we braved the mild chaos of NCN5 through the centre of town until we got to the tranquility of the riverside path across to North Hincksey. Then we just had Cumnor Hill into a headwind to deal with - which everyone did, extremely well! Fortunately, the wind had died down a little for our headwind bash home so the final miles were quickly ticked off.

Thanks to all - it was a fun afternoon!

Report:
A glorious evening and a lovely bunch of eight of us set out. All was running smoothly, however, turns out it set off "with a bang" - quite literally, as Martyn's new small wheeled bike graced us with the instant style puncture part way along the road to Denchworth. Was not feasible to repair on the spot for various reasons, so Martyn contacted the "boss" to come collect him.
So, eight became seven. All then continued smoothly, including a leisure stop by Lyford Church. Although the dog in the neighbouring house was not too impressed with our presence. "Chastened", it was time to move on round to West Hanney - via the "new" tarmaced road, which, sadly, is showing its first signs of wear. A slight delay further on when Lottie developed cramp - can happen to any of us. Various movements were tried and it eventually wore off. What more could happen? A second church "pause" in West Hanney, and then on back towards Denchworth, as it was beginning to get cold and the pub beckoned(!).

On the way past the Lyford turn....who is that "honing" into view? Could it be Martyn? Yes, Martyn had returned an another bike. Two different bikes on one club ride - a first?? My suggestion that Martyn completed the circuit was declined (no surprise) as was accepted that he had covered as much distance as us, so can definitely be included on the ride!

So to the pub - for four of us, with the other four going straight back, to round off a lovely evening. Thanks to all - a pleasure.
