Regular Saturday Moderate ride
Leader:
Henk Altmann (deceased)
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Regular Saturday afternoon ride of 60-70km with tea stop.
This will be a flatish 62km ride to the east of Wantage. From Grove the route is Denchworth, West and East Hanney, Steventon, Drayton, Sutton Courtenay and Appleford. After a further 2 kms, a right turn will pick up the cycle track through Didcot and under the power lines to the B4016. Thereafter we shall turn north and pick up the road to North Moreton, South Moreton, Aston Upthorpe, East Hagbourne and Coscote. Here is a decision point. The flat course will turn right to Didcot and Harwell village for tea at either Q Cafe or Bytes Cafe in Milton Heights. The more energetic riders can choose the hill to Chilton and continue on to the Cafe, passing Rutherford laboratory and Rowstock corner. After tea we shall cycle through West and East Hendred, Ginge, Lockinge, Wantage and back to Grove.

Report:
A stiff westerly breeze decided a clockwise rotation from Grove to follow the route described in the Ride description. A steady 13 mph speed and relatively light traffic allowed the group to remain together over the whole ride. The ride leader managed to fall off his bike when the map holder became unclipped but no damage was sustained. The easy option of returning through Didcot and avoiding Chilton hill was chosen. Tea at Byte Cafe in Milton Heights did not materialize since they appear to be uncontactable and Q Cafe substituted. The ride was completed through The Orchards and Hendreds to Grove via Wantage. Total distance about 64 km. Weather looked threatening at the beginning but remained dry.

Report:
Sunday brought a gloriously sunny if chilly morning. We said farewell to King Alfreds statue and headed out of town, settling into a nice steady pace whilst navigating our way through both Letcombes,Regis and Bassett.

Derek provided the first mechanical malfunction of the day, when his chain link decided to abandon ship on the descent from Kingston Lisle.Half an hour or so later assisted by the chain link extraction tool,we were up and running(riding?)again.Crossing the inevitable/unavoidable A420 at Shrivenham,we headed uphill passing the very impressive wind turbine farm at close quarters,(They are really quite huge!),before the steepest ascent of the day to Coleshill.

Gathering breath at the summit, all that remained pre-lunch was a gentle short journey on empty roads to the "Black cat tearooms" at Lechlade.Service was excellent and swift, with a nice varied menu offering everything from full lunches and jacket potatoes,to cream teas and homemade cakes.Thoroughly recommended for a lunch or coffee stop !

Post lunch our journey headed off from Lechlade in a north easterly direction, fairly unfamiliar territory to this leader and requiring a bit of extra concentration on my "err" rather creaky map reading skills! No problems though, and once again the reward was quiet roads and lovely golden stoned villages.

Passing through Langford village,Des became the final contestant of the day to demonstrate his bike mending skills, following a surprise visit by the "bicycle puncture pixies" to the rear tyre of his very nice new carbon fibre framed bike.Still,it was a lovely day,and great to be outdoors soaking up the very welcome spring sunshine.

Being in no particular hurry and after saying goodbye to Derek at Aston,a tea stop at the recently re-furbished pottery seemed like a very good idea.It was nice to see Edith and Brian arrive at the cafe for refreshments, out on their bikes for an afternoon ride.

The final leg home saw the group gradually disperse on route to their respective destinations, whilst Robert and myself completed the final few miles back to Wantage and King Alfreds statue !..........

Thanks everyone for a lovely day!

Report:
The ride out to Aston pottery was quite uneventful the weather was kind to us on the way there just a few spits and spots of rain. We made good progress deciding to take a diversion from the planned ride, taking the what we thought was a track to Shifford passed the Church. However the track was freshly tarmaced and was better than any of the roads we had cycled during the ride. Steve Bruffell's sister joined us on the ride forgive me Steve if I have got the name wrong I think it was Mandy - very nice to meet you. The tea stop at Aston Pottery was very enjoyable in the new premises; the prices have risen slightly but the cakes are still homemade and lovely.

On the return journey Richard set off early. We made good progress as far as Buckland, where we discovered a house fire in progress. There must have been 10 fire engines fighting the thatch fire. I led the assault through the fire engines not realising that Brian and Steve S had been sent on a diversion through the village. We headed on back to Grove. On reaching the edge of Denthworth, I glimpsed Richard just in front and decided to give chase. Chris pulled in front of me and said "get on my back wheel". In the rain that had desended on us in Buckland and no mudguard on Chris's cycle, well you can guess what happened. Anyway, I over took Richard and raced him back to Grove. I won. Good ride
