Report:We set off from O.M.H but before we got to Wantage, the leader, having forgotten that he had fitted new cleats, didn't unclip fast enough and toppled over, breaking the bark in 3 places. He dusted himself off and restarted but a mudguard stay had come loose, repaired in Charlton Park (cheers Roger).We continued with no further incidents other than speeding down the hill in Hendred (new 20 mph limit). There was a headwind between Steventon and Hanney, which everybody coped with. Good ride, good company, good weather. Cheers! | ||

Riders:Alan FisherAngie Fisher Anke Otto Diana Whidborne Lily Winston Lorna Swanton Michael Tayler Steve Swanton Val Smith Riders = 9 Weather:Report:Despite a damp afternoon and the further likelihood of showers, a good turnout for our 1* ride this evening. A warm welcome to Lily on her first Tuesday Evening ride. We could see dark clouds looming to the West as we headed into Wantage, but we managed to skirt them and apart from the odd spot, we stayed dry through the Letcombes. Everyone climbed Holborn Hill with aplomb and we regrouped at the top to take in the views.We just caught the edge of a shower as we joined the B-road to descend into Childrey - always fun. We then took the bridleway down to West Challow, which was new to several riders. The A417 was relatively quiet as we headed towards the Denchworth turning but at this point light rain swept in and stayed with us for the rest of the ride. So there was no stopping at the top of the Circourt Road railway bridge to take in the view of the Downs. Back in Grove at 8:20 after an enjoyable ride despite the damp. Thanks everyone for your company. | ||

Report:A beautiful sunny day for this ride out to Stanford in the Vale. We went up to Southmoor, after going via Denchworth and Lyford. We crossed the bridge over the A420 and took the road into Longworth.We took the track from Longworth to Hinton Waldrist past the beautiful Manor House. We emerged from Hinton Waldrist and back down the hill to the A420 again. We all successfully made it across the main road and down to Pusey and Gainfield where Sarah left us to get home as she had an afternoon commitment. We then carried on to Stanford. We had lovely coffee and cakes although the sunny weather brought out the wasps. The 2* group met us at the cafe and although we set off before them they overtook us on the way home. A very pleasant ride. | ||

2* Saturday Half Day Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph).This is a classic ride on some rarely used little roads down into the Thames Valley. Out via Denchworth and Park Lane to Stanford in the Vale, then to Hatford and a tiny road to the north. Then a quick dash down a short section of the A420 to Littleworth is rewarded by a dramatic drop into the Thames flood plain. Over the river to Clanfield, along to Bampton and a great tea stop at Aston Pottery. Pot buying is optional, but the cafe is great. Suitably fortified, we will take some time to explore the rarely travelled tiny lanes around Shifford down to the Thames at the mysterious hamlet of Chimney (tantalisingly close to the other side of Duxford ford), before conquering the modest challenge of Buckland Hill and (after exploring the back streets of Buckland village) heading for home via Charney Bassett. 40 miles and about four hours in total, so note the slightly earlier start time. |
||
Riders:Barry StantonDavid Jackson James Bosley John Tranter LeeAnn Norris Mike Bailey Nick Dunton Paul Smith Riders = 8 Weather:Report:We had wildly varying weather forecast all week for this one and when we set off it still seemed likely that we would get a soaking at some point. But - we got lucky and managed to dodge the storm clouds all around us.Always a fun ride and this edition was no exception. We made good time with the tailwind to Aston Pottery for a great coffee stop, slotting in nicely between a peloton from Swindon and and another from Bicester. Then we headed into the wild lands down by the river, getting more and more remote until we passed through the tiny hamlet of Chimney and finally made it to the little wooden bridge across the navigable channel of the Thames. We then headed home, conquering Buckland Hill in a more than adequate fashion. Thanks to all for a fun group, and particular thanks to Nick for sweeping. | ||

Off Road Sunday Ride | 2* |

Leader:Roger Postbeschild |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Off-road half day ride around local tracks, usually 15-30 miles. Knobbly tyres required. We are keen to welcome new riders of all abilities. Sometimes we ride in cold and/or wet - but please let us know if you are coming so we can tell you if we decide to cancel due to bad weather or other reasons.A ride unashamedly stolen from Eddie. An excursion on to the downs. Although I am starting from OMH, I am happy to collect Wantage based riders at around 9.40 by The Lord Nelson at the foot of Larkdown Hill. The route would be OK for hardcore gravel bike riders but a mountain bike would be more comfortable! Coffee stop at Chilton Garden Centre. |
||
Report:Just four riders for the first Sunday off-road ride of August - I know of a number of potential riders who are away at the moment though.Having made it up to The Ridgeway, we rode along it until just before the A34 with a glorious tail wind, then down to Ilsley and past Mick Channon's establishment (until he sells it) where we met our first muddy section - thankfully short. The showers arrived here, the girls donned rain tops whereas the boys had believed the forecast....... We quickly dried off however! Coffee and refreshment were taken at Chilton Garden Centre and we returned via the Icknield Greenway. | ||

Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. ||
Report:A fine evening after recent rain, so a few puddles to steer around, but generally good conditions. And we had a new rider, so 4 of us headed up Lark Hill for the Ridgeway.From there we went down Ice Valley, which was a it grassy, so needed pedalling downhill, and up the other side to bluebell wood. Quite a lot of climbing already! From bluebell wood (with no bluebells in August of course) we enjoyed a smooth if slightly muddy descent, and then sidled across to 'twisty gnarly' which was running very well. Unfortunately after this, we had to climb back up to the Ridgeway. We did this gradually on another grassy slope near the A34, and gradually made our way back to Wantage, stopping for a breather on the way, and making the final descent at rapid pace at Betterton. | ||

Report:Turned out to be a glorious evening - after recent mixed weather(!) and a lovely ride.Ride distance was slightly shortened as we took the option of the path out of Grove - directly to West Hanney - kept us more off the roads and more "rural" - past "Exhibit A" namely the Thames Water facility(!). The ever changing landscape, with new development - different each time.... Paused by West Hanney Church, and then - further round - at Lyford Church. As plenty of time to relax, and enjoy the peace and quiet - lovely to have no traffic noise.... Well done to Lily (and everybody!). A nice easy ride to lead, and an enjoyable evening (even without the pub!). See you all again | ||

1* Saturday Half Day Ride - Oxford Urban Safari | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:30 pm |
Start Location:Redbridge Park & Ride, Abingdon Rd, OX1 4XG |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.This is a very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside paths and quiet streets to do a 13 mile 'urban safari' around the south and centre of Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is mostly traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Parking is in the Redbridge Park and Ride at the southern end of the Abingdon Road (bring 2 pounds in coins or pay by card). Note there is a 2m height restriction on the entrance so let me know in advance if you have bikes on a roof rack for further instructions. We head north through the strange sliver of a suburb known as Grandpont, cross the river on the fascinating Gasworks bridge and then head into the centre of town. A mini-tour of Jericho leads to a coffee stop on St Giles. Then I will give you the insider gossip as we pass through the epicentre of Oxford, under Hertford College's Bridge of Sighs, and eventually down to the river at Folly Bridge. From there we head along the Thames towpath past the College boathouses and pop up into the lovely Iffley village and Rose Hill before continuing along the river to Sandford. We then have a couple of miles back through Kennington before some unexpected underpasses get us back to the start. I'm really pleased with this one - don't miss it! 13 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph. |
||
Riders:Carin TranterCaroline Atkin Diana Whidborne John Tranter Nick Portsmouth Roger Postbeschild Simon Atkin Tim Waite Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Always fun to welcome new people on this ride - as much a tour guide experience as it is a bike ride. It was particularly good to welcome Caroline on her first ride with the club.We all assembled in good time at the P&R and headed off into the quiet streets of North Hinksey and Grandpont before crossing the river and heading into the thronging centre of town. Having struggled through it was good to be back in the peaceful setting of Wellington Square before a circuit around some of the sights of Jericho brought us to St Giles and a welcome cafe stop at Taylors. We then had a quick peek inside my old College, St Cross, before heading for 'peak Oxford' with the Sheldonian, the Hertford bridge, the High, Oriel Square and St Aldates. Another fun stretch along the river towpath followed, with the bonus of a rowing regatta going on, before we explored Iffley, Rose Hill and the lovely Sustrans route from the river to the back of Kennington. A final detour down to the river at Sandford Lock before heading back to the cars through Kennington. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |

Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Beacon Car Park |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. Heading north today to just brush the edge of The Cotswolds.Ride of about 100k with 677m of climbing. We will have two stops - one at Lynwood in Carterton (43k) and a later one at Aston Pottery (76k). So one late morning and one early afternoon (as opposed to bang on lunchtime) but lots of food options at both. I've had a run of wet weather for my recent rides so keeping my fingers and toes crossed for dry weather, (but no guarantees). |
||
Report:We met in glorious sunshine and were able to set off a few minutes early, (despite a number of the party taking a sight seeing trip to the Market Place first). Unfortunately our timely progress was halted abruptly when my gear cable snapped as we approached Childrey. Jan kindly agreed to take over as ride leader (thank you Jan) and I waved the group goodbye as I set off to walk up Childrey Hill (why do you always get stuck in top gear).Not wanting to be left out I got home somehow, switched bikes and then took a direct route to the first coffee stop, miraculously arriving at a similar time to the group. After brunch ( tasty food and quick service today) I resumed my ride leader duties. We all agreed the next stretch was a scenic, quiet and pleasant section of the ride. We hit a headwind on the way to Aston and Barry kindly rode in front (thank you Barry). Sad to hear at Aston that the Lionesses had lost the World Cup final.🥲 After the climb of Buckland Hill we waved goodbye to Jan, and I began to slow (all the excitement from earlier catching up with me). So we divided into two groups. Andy kindly taking the group back to Wantage, (thank you Andy) with Katherine keeping me company (thank you Katherine). So I am not sure I fulfilled everything a ride leader should today, but it didn’t really matter as there was a great group spirit and lots of help and friendship. 😀 | ||

The westerly wind both helped and hindered us along the way, though was never quite as bad as I had anticipated. The sunshine provided us with great views of the the Downs as we turned out of the wind at Fernham. We got back to Old Mill Hall before sunset, under clear blue skies. A pleasant evening's ride! Riders:Barry StantonDavid Jackson Des Higgs John Salmon John Tranter Mike Bailey Robert Mulhall Riders = 7 Weather:Report:It was great to welcome Robert to the ride - a member of Swindon CTC who liked the look of our ride which overlaps our patch with theirs.The ride got off to an unfortunate start when Des discovered a shoe cleat problem and had to abandon before we had left Grove. After that our biggest concern was the number of gathering storm clouds and the distant rumble of thunder, but we got lucky and stayed dry throughout. I decided to add in the back roads of Longworth and Hinton Waldrist, which were well received as always - in particular, John's geography background led to an appreciation of the abrupt edge between the Vale and the Thames Valley that we rode along, and Mike then showed us the house he had lived in in Hinton Waldrist a few decades ago (complete with his hand built wall). Generally all went well and we made good time to the always wonderful service at The Cantorist in Childrey. From there we headed back to Grove nice and easily. Thanks to all for a fun morning. | ||
