Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

A very straightforward classic loop through the Vale to kick off the Tuesday 2* season. Out to Denchworth, along to West Hanney then up what may be the smoothest road in Oxfordshire to Southmoor. A nice gentle glide back down to Charney Bassett, Denchworth again and home.

No hills at all (unless you count the Denchworth railway bridge, which we don't).

16 miles, so should get us back just around sunset. But - lights are essential!

Wow - what a great group and what a lot of people! Clearly, everyone was excited by a rare pleasant evening after a truly terrible Bank Holiday weekend. There was still a fair bit of standing water around the place and an unpleasant amount of potholes, but it was a very nice evening and we had a great ride.

Emma's friend Lorna decided she wasn't feeling too good and left us at Dechworth, but the rest of the group stayed together really well and dealt with a somewhat nagging wind with no problem at all.

Clare's brother James also joined us.

Thanks to all for a great evening!

A gentle start to the new season taking account of available light and (potentially) untested legs!

N.B. Due to a poor road surface, we'll omit the descent into Sparsholt and go via Childrey instead.
Please see amended route...

We'll head out to Hackpen Hill, for the only climb of the ride, via the Letcombes and down into Sparsholt. from there we stay in the vale, taking in Kingston Lisle, Uffington, Goosey before returning home via Denchworth.

A shortish ride of c. 35k will get us home between Sunset and sun down. Although the sun will (hopefully) provide light, please make sure you bring your own!

Report:
A brilliant turnout to the new Tuesday evening season with 17 riders opting to brave the wind and (potential) showers to set the season off to a great start.

Thanks to Karen for leading the second (almost mandatory) group and to Paul and kath for sweeping.

The potholes and various road closures complicated an otherwise simple route and the wind did it's level best to make the outward part of the journey quite testing (at least for me!). The return leg saw the pace speed up but also meant that a puncture for Eddie created a split in the group for a time. Thanks to Andy for accompanying me back to the stricken group.

On the way back we were passed by the Karen's group which encouraged a concerted effort to catch up - which we did - just!

The two groups merged for the last few kilometres arriving back to Grove a little after 20.00.

I was impressed that the number of lights and fluorescent clothing meant that although the various delays got us back after sundown, we were highly visible to all other road users!

Report:
It was great, if somewhat daunting, to see so many riders turning out, and in the event, the disciplined riding by all made it an easy group to manage. Thanks to those of you who led smaller groups and most importantly Nicole, Des and Hugh who took turns on the back.
The road from Stanton Harcourt to Cogges was full of drivers making the short cut to the tip (yes John and Des did warn me) but in the main they were pretty considerate.
The cafe stop was pretty quick considering the snail's pace of the serving staff, but just as we were about to leave, both Chris and Steve simultaneously noticed punctures.
The traffic out of Whitney was pretty horrendous, and though Steve had kindly recced an alternative via a bridleway, many of the group felt it was a little too early in the season to risk skinny tyres on gravel.
Homeward bound through Aston and Bampton we noticed that Great Brook was still closed and I for one was happy not to have attempted it - unlike James on Tuesday.
Terry picked up the pace through Charney Bassett, though some of us chose not to follow (sweat), and we arrived back at OMH a little after 5pm.
Thanks all for a very enjoyable ride. :D

This early season 100km Audax event was resurrected by our club a few years ago. It is now run by another club, but we like to support it. Although it is a standalone organised event, Jo and Eddie Little have kindly offered to lead a 'ride within a ride' for anyone who wants to join them.

A modest excursion into the Cotswold hills followed by a gentle wander through the watery lanes of the upper Thames, the Evenlode and the Windrush.

The ride starts and ends at the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall in Uffington which has a village shop adjacent. Food and drink available at the start/finish and included in the entry fee.

Pre-entry for this audax event is preferred. The cost is £5.50 and can be completed online at Audax UK:

This was a pleasant and uneventful spin around familiar roads befitting the early-season date. Clearly the winter hasn’t taken too great a toll on the fitness of the three-star group, as we maintained the promised upper-end pace without problems. It wasn't the weather or the ride or even ride leader (I guess/hope?), but for numerous reasons (some more valid than others?) there were only 2 of us at OMH for this ride. Shame as it a good route to get some vertical meters in early spring. The threat of rain held off and whilst a kind of a hazy night it was quite pleasant with not too much wind. Progress was good, which meant a small extra bit was added near the end before heading up the A338 and down Court hill which has some impressive potholes and cracks in the road (anyone riding there at the moment - downhill specifically - be warned !). With no rider having the need to return to Grove (we both went there at the start), the ride effectively ended in Wantage, just when it was getting dark. Needless to say the 'group' did stay together well during the ride (!).

Back on your mountain Bike 1*
Leader:
Robin Tucker
Start Time:
10:00 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
At the start of this ride, we will cover bike set up and basic techniques to make off-roading fun. We'll do a 3 mile 'training ride' then an optional short ride up to about 10 miles on local tracks, with frequent breaks. This ride is ideal if you have wanted to take your bike off-road, but been a bit unsure.

Plenty of free car parking at Old Mill Hall.

From June – the regular off-road rides for 2018 return: we are toning these down and keeping them closer to Wantage. The rides will be 15-20 miles, on quiet local tracks through the woods, and maybe up to the Ridgeway. Pace equivalent to 2*, best on a mountain bike, but a cyclocross bike and if dry a robust hybrid will be fine. Call/email Robin if you are not sure.

Report:
A slightly uncertain weather forecast didn't stop 9 of us assembling at Old Mill Hall on this April Sunday for the first 'Back on your Mountain Bike' ride. We had 6 victims, er, relative novices, and 3 experienced riders. And the rain stayed off, although there was mud underneath at times.

We started in the car park with checking through a few important basics:
- Riding position (not too stretched out)
- Tyre pressure (not too firm: 30-35 psi)
- Suspension (soft enough to get decent motion)
- and some tips about maintenance

Then it was off to Crab Hill, which unfortunately due to recent wet weather provided the first test of bike handling, with Robin demonstrating the 'emergency dismount in a muddy puddle'. With a bit more discussion about the evils of ruts, and how best to handle them we continued to Wantage.

The next challenge was Lark Hill and a steep, slippy slope. We talked about how gears, body position and line choice could help get you up. Brilliantly, everyone made it, and arrived at the top rightly feeling proud and confidence-boosted.

Then it was a bit more mud and a continued climb through Bitham Woods and up past the monument to Baron Wantage to the top of Jolly Green Giant - the big descent! This should be the fun bit, but can also be a bit intimidating, so we spent a while talking about position again, and how to use your arms and legs as extra suspension. The feedback was that this made a real difference on this grassy slope.

We worked our way back to Grove on a less muddy route, covering a couple more minor challenges and tips on the way. There was general agreement that continuing a series of clearly marked 'easy' off-road rides over the summer would be a good thing to do.

A grey threatening night that still tempted 11 of us out. It was nice to welcome Julie on her first ride with the club. The leader tested everyone at the Denchworth T-junction by dithering over the route and then taking us the wrong way to Charney Bassett! With the wind at our back nobody complained at the extra mileage!

We safely and swiftly crossed the A420, through Hinton Waldrist with discussions on childhood swimming at Duxford and then the twisty approach to the bridge back over the A420. Not only did we all cope well with the headwind but we seemed to be faster on the return than we did on the way out! A very pleasant ride with a lovely group. Can't ask for more really :)

Seventeen other riders were brave enough to try my reverse around the vale approach to this evening's ride. Despite some optimistic weather reports at the weekend it was actually cloudy and windy which didn't really help our direction of travel. :(

Surprising myself at times with roads viewed in the opposite direction to normal we swept up Fawler Hill and then alone the spring line through Sparsholt. Whilst the wind was against us going up onto the ridgeway the benefit of swooping down Hackpen Hill was a rare delight.

The Letcombes look very different west to east as we made our way home.

Thanks to Jo, Jane and Terry for their support and sweeping

Summer-time is predicted by my seaweed and pinecones! A rollicking loop up via quieter lanes to the NE, then via Abingdon to the delicacy of smooth tarmac through Milton Park. A deviation to sample the brand new tarmac on the Harwell link road up to the A417, giving a straightforward run West to end at the BP garage in Wantage. Phil (Ward's) seaweed and pine cones must have been ahead of the case as the night was not as spring-like as hoped yet with a gusty wind from the south. Speaking of Phil, a logistic fail meant he could not lead the ride as planned so I volunteered to drag us around his route, but decided to reverse it to avoid the A417 with wind from the south - along with a few other changes. This meant we could take in the road past Lain's barn as well, after which we took in a loop via Lockinge and the Ginges to East Hendred, before heading to the Harwell bypass road which had everything you could want in a road: downhill, smooth new tarmac and tailwind, which I think was enjoyed overall (mind you it was over before you knew it). Onwards through Didcot followed by the road to Milton Park where Hugh suffered a p*nct*re upon which he kindly agreed to let us get on and ride home himself with Nick (glad to see that according to strava you both got there OK). After the numerous speed bumps of Sutton Courtenay I opted for the path from there to Abingdon which is rarely part of Cycling UK rides (shame as it is mostly traffic free) and heading for Ock street there rather than Bath street to avoid the roadworks there. From there the route was as planned via Marcham and Garford and headwind was certainly obviously present on parts of that stretch. Nightfall and increased rainfall then coincided on the way back to Grove via West Hanney and Denchworth. Thanks all for braving the sub-optimal conditions. We also had a new rider for the 4 star (and Cycling UK Wantage in general), welcome Phil.

At last, a Saturday 1* in good weather! Although we had no newcomers or families this year, quite a number were on their bikes for the first time in 2018. It was great to see everyone again.

The lanes of the Vale were in fine spring colour with trees and bushes either coming into leaf or into blossom. It was lovely to enjoy at leisurely pace. We had a short stop in Lyford (when several riders took then opportunity to look in the small village church) and a picture stop on the green in Charney Bassett before continuing on to Gainfield and Stanford-in-the-Vale. As we pulled into church green in Stanford for our refreshment stop, the church bells rang out as if to welcome us. There was a throng gathered in the churchyard for a tree planting ceremony to mark a significant anniversary for the church bells.

Suitably refreshed we continued on to Park Lane. There were a few drops of rain in the air as we turned into the Asti stud road, but these soon petered out and there was even a splash of sunlight as we returned to Grove.

Thanks everyone for your company on an enjoyable ride. Roll on the Tuesday evening 1* rides...

Regular Wantage Ride - Burford Classic 3*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

A classic touring ride into the Cotswolds, taking in some of my favourite places: Coleshill, Eastleach, the Windrush valley, Burford and a much-frequented ford. Just over 56 miles, which we'll take at a steady pace of 12-13 mph, with a few ups and downs, primarily before lunch. In the spirit of touring, we'll have a late morning break to visit the twin churches of Eastleach, before continuing on to lunch at the Royal Oak in Burford. There's a chance to dip our wheels in the ford at Shilton and a possible café stop on the way home.

To help with numbers, please could you let Steve know if you are planning to come (thanks to those who've done so already).

Abingdon Cycle Festival
Leader:
Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:
Market Square Abingdon
Description:
This is an advert for The Abingdon cycle Festival rather than an actual Cycling UK Wantage event.

The Abingdon Cycling Festival will be back for a 7th year on Sunday 22 April 2018.
The Festival will deliver free rides and cycling activities for all ages and abilities. There will be over 20 rides on offer for road bikes, mountain bikes and anything else with two wheels!

The event ambition is to encourage as many people, from every part of the local community, to get on their bikes! Road bike, mountain bike and family rides will head out from the Market Square starting from 9am.

For the first time, 2018 will also see events taking place in the afternoon on the airfield at Dalton Barracks. Less experienced riders can benefit from free cycling skills sessions from 13.00-14.00, led by qualified coaches, for both children (8-14) and adults (15+). Then the racing cyclists take over the airfield track, competing in the Abingdon leg of the Oxfordshire Road Race League, hosted by the Abingdon Race Team – sign up on the British Cycling website. Spectators are welcome to come along and watch – there’s plenty of free parking.

All rides organised by the festival are free and start at 9am in the market square and 1pm at Dalton Barracks (use Barrow Road entrance) and will continue throughout the day.

10-mile Club Evening Rides Restart 1*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Our weekly programme of Tuesday evening easy rides restarts this week with a out-and-back ride to the village of Goosey in the heart of the Vale with its large village green, small white-washed church and a fine view towards the Ridgeway. A relatively flat route through Denchworth of about 8 miles. It can be cold in the lanes in April so please wrap up warm.

Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.

The ride will return to and finish in Grove for those who need to get home. However, all are welcome to stop at The Fox in Denchworth for a sociable drink with members on the other evening rides on the way back. Lights will be needed for your ride home from the pub.

Report:
Breezy and overcast with the threat of rain weren't the most promising conditions for our first easy Tuesday evening ride of the season. Nevertheless, a good turn out of 9 riders and 3 newcomers; a warm welcome to Jason, Owen and Lewis.
We enjoyed a gentle ride out to Goosey with the breeze at times on our backs and at others in our faces. There was some really good calling of car up/down and warnings of potholes as we rode.
It started to rain as we approached Goosey but , fortunately, this didn't last long. After a brief rest and natter on the green, we retraced our steps. Carin and Lorna decided to stop at the Fox while the rest of us continued back to Grove. The Steves returned to the Fox for the social afterwards.
A most encouraging and enjoyable start to the season - see you all next week.

We kept together well as a group despite the headwind, which did seem to come from every direction at one point. There was some consternation when the second part of the route took us away from Denchworth, but we still arrived at the Fox in good time for a drink, meal and chat.

A fairly flat ride with quite a head wind, but without the forecast rain apart from a few spots. A good turnout of 16 riders and 2 newish riders, Sian and Keith Mitchell. We cycled out to Longworth, back though Fyfield, joining Winter Lane to Hanney (always a pleasure to ride on that stretch of tarmac) and with a final little loop towards Goosey turning back up through Denchworth, with some riders stopping at The Fox and the rest heading back to Grove.

2* Saturday Half Day Ride - OXFORD SPECIAL 2*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.

This is a 2* ride that has pretty much everything! We head out via Charney Bassett and discover the nifty Southmoor footbridge - the safest way to cross the A420. Then we follow the quiet road parallel to the A420 all the way to Cumnor and swoop down Cumnor Hill to the edge of Oxford. From there we utilise a a super cunning bike-safe transit of the A420/A34 Botley junction to head north for a lovely circuit around Port Meadow before heading back into town via Wolvercote to my very own St Cross College for a VIP coffee stop. You can only get in if you are a friend of the Bursar, with catering from the fine cafes of St Giles. Then there is more fun with my most cunning bike track and riverside route out of town to the west, before the climb of Cumnor Hill. We head for home via Wootton, Tubney and Fyfield.

It is a long ride for an afternoon, but we have a few short cut options in the final section which we can use if necessary. I don't expect to be back before 5.30pm. Having said that, there are very few hills and we will stick to a steady 2* pace.

Report:
Great credit to the brave band who turned up despite a very unpromising drizzle at the start and a cold wind.

The group stayed together well and we soon found ourselves enjoying the sights of north Oxford and then our VIP tea stop at St Cross College seemed to be suitably well received.

it's always tricky fighting through the crowds in the centre of town trying to find remnants of so-called National Cycle Route 5, but the riverside routing back out of town was fun and peaceful before our big climb back up Cumnor Hill. We decided to keep things simple and head for home the shortest way, which was back the way we had come.

Back in Grove just after 6pm, apologies for being a bit later than planned, but generally a good afternoon.

CUK Oxfordshire 75 miles - Chilterns 3*
Leader:
Robin Tucker
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
(Updated 22 April). All day ride to the Chilterns. This ride is particularly intended for those aiming to get some distance in their legs before the Century ride in May, or other long rides in the summer. The distance allows us to reach from Grove to the beautiful scenery of the Chilterns.

Riding first East, we start on the quiet roads and work our may past Didcot and Wallingford before the first of two big climbs - past the Bluebells at Swyncombe. Our lunch stop is after 30 miles at the Barn at Turville Heath.

Then, we are refreshed for a downwards section into Henley-on-Thames, to see where the river leaves the county, and back upstream (and up the second big climb) to reach our second stop at Wallingford at about 54 miles. From there, it is relatively flat 21 miles back to Grove.

Report:
Our 'Couch to 200 miles' steps up a gear with the second ride and 75 miles and with it two big hills. The distance opened up The Chilterns from Wantage / Grove and we made full use of that, and were rewarded with fantastic displays of bluebells in several woods along the way. All on a cold, cloudy day, but only a few minutes of very light drizzle.

Our route was a figure of 8. We started heading south to Charlton and the quiet routes south of the A417. Then we did have to go on the A417 for a bit, but not too long and in to Didcot. We had a brief pause in South Moreton (half way to lunch) and on to Wallingford. Then Ewelme, up the big hill at Swyncombe to lunch at The Barn at Turville Heath.

A good choice for lunch (for a not-to-big group), although it is not heated and inside was almost as cold as the ~7C outside! Still, the goulashes and soups definitely helped.

After lunch it was a nice downhill to Henley, with time for a picture with the river and bridge in the background. We then worked our way back west towards Wallingford for tea, mostly following NCN5.

Two riders had cycled from Wallingford to join us at the start, so they left us here, then we had tea at the Bean and Brew. From there it was a mere 21 miles back to Grove. Phew.
