Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:I'm fancying a fairly tough, hilly ride this Saturday. Call me crazy if you like...Up Chain Hill from Wantage, across the rollercoaster road to East Illsley, then via Compton and Hermitage to the edge of Newbury (with a nod to the Vodafone campus, source of my pension...) Then a long run along the B4000, more or less on top of the ridge, before we swoop down to Lambourne and the drag up to Ashbury Hill. Then back through the Vale of White Horse to Grove. A fairly long Saturday afternoon ride, around 50 miles, but should be do-able at a 3* pace in around 4 hours. Not sure about tea stop - maybe somewhere around Newbury, maybe Lambourne - let's see how we feel. |

Riders:Chris WaltersDavid Smith David Talboys David Yearley John Tranter Phil Stubbings Richard Preece Ursula Hallam Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Exciting weather all around as we set off under black clouds. True to recent form, we managed to avoid it and seemed to be riding around the edge of a cloud for the first 10 miles or so. Just as well, as this was the toughest part of the ride, unrelenting hills across to Compton and Hampstead Norreys. Our luck held until we had traversed Newbury (checking the Vodafone campus is still in good shape) and climbed Snake Lane to Stockcross. Then the heavens did open and we had an almost hail storm for about 10 minutes. Fortunately, that was as bad as it got and after a shop stop in Lambourne we had the best of the day's sunshine for a revised route home via Blowingstone Hill and Kingston Lisle.Thanks to everyone for good company and a great ride. | ||

Wallingford Cycle Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:1:30 pm |
Start Location:Wallingford Market Place |
Description:Wallingford is a great place for a bike ride, but has not recently had many rides for the local leisure cyclist. To put this right, CTC Oxfordshire has organised a series of 5 rides for the Wallingford cycling community over the spring and summer. These are based on the popular format of 25 to 40 miles on a Sunday afternoon with a stop for tea and cake. Even if you haven’t done much cycling recently, 25 miles can be surprisingly easy to cover with good company and a suitable refreshment half way.These rides will be at at sociable rather than sporty pace, about 11-13 mph on the road. Some hills are inevitable, but they will be kept to a few. The rides will be led by experienced leaders, and follow CTC guidelines to be safe and enjoyable for everyone. Non-CTC members are welcome, but we ask that you join the CTC if you intend to ride more than 5 times with us. The rides will start from Wallingford Market Place, just outside the Tourist Information Centre at 1:30pm on the first Sunday of each month. (The nearby Goldsmiths Lane car park is currently free on Sundays.) They will normally arrive back at 4:30 to 5pm. This month's route takes in a few touristy places. We'll go via Benson to Ewelme where we can take a look at the famous cress beds. Then onto Chalgrove to see the Civil War battlefield and monument. We'll head to Dorchester Abbey for tea and maybe a quick look inside before heading back to Wallingford via Shillingford. Around 20 miles taken at a gentle pace to suit the whole group |
||
Riders:John TalbotJudith Agnew Phil Jeffery Riders = 3 Weather:Report:Nine riders all keen to see more Wallingford rides! We followed the planned route through Benson to the watercress beds at Ewelme, then onto Chalgrove where we stopped for a few minutes to read the rather complicated history of the battlefield!Luckily the wind was behind us for the straight B-road to Stadhampton but was against us for the lane through Drayton St Leonard. The sneaky way into Dorchester was navigated and we stopped for tea and cakes at the teashop at the abbey. It was then an easy run back into Wallingford via Shillingford. New roads for many of the riders so perfect exploration | ||

Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride for a social gathering with riders from the other groups.Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know.Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any 2. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. |
||
Report:Only 2 of us tonight, and we picked a slightly longer way to the pub than usual.Crab Hill and Lark Hill were quickly dispatched, then it was across to the A338 and up Manor Hill and on to the Ridgeway west. At the B4001, instead of keeping straight on, we turned left and enjoyed a short piece of dark woody singletrack and the well-rutted descent to Seven Barrows. Then it was northwards via Sparsholt FIeld and Childrey to a well-earned beer at the Fox in Denchworth. Going home, we decided to try the cross-country route to Grove. This proved to be passable, but very bumpy. So i got to ride a trail that I'd never ridden before, but I don't think I'll be rushing back! | ||

Description:Enjoy an easy-paced ride around the local lanes.29km at a pace of 18-21 km/h (11-13 mph). No hills to speak of. Everyone made it up the hills at East Challow and past the cricket club before descending speedily down the rarely used Silver Lane into West Challow. A quick dash on the A417 took us via Circourt towards Denchworth, with John and Sara salivating at the thought of an early beer... but that was a tease as we peeled off at the smell of the hops and headed further round the Vale through Stanford and Charney Bassett, before arriving at the Fox dead on 8pm, having lost a few along the way as we passed their homes or the thought of dinner took a priority. A good turnout across the groups for a social saw the pub still swinging at 9pm. Well done to everyone for what was quite a spirited 2* ride, and special thanks to Adrian and Richard for helping to marshall such a large group on the road. | ||

Description:Ride out through the Vale with opportunities to tackle a couple of familiar hills "the wrong way round", before zooming back to The Fox for well deserved refreshments.Note that both Dragon Hill West and Hackpen are proper category 4 climbs - we'll pause at the top to admire the views. Given that it's now getting dark a little earlier, we will need to choose which hill to make optional. Long, hilly, quick - or any combination! Distance 35-45 km (22-28 miles) at a pace of 20-22 km/h (13-14 mph) or slightly faster if flat. May include hard hills. Optional stop at The Fox at the end of the ride, and please bring lights for the return journey. What with optional hills and an optional stop at The Fox, decision making is being shared on Tuesday! |
||
Report:Five of us set out, including newcomer Hugo, travelling at a solid pace through Denchworth, Goosey, Baulking and Uffington.As we tackled the climb up from Woolstone, Hugo snapped his chain, so he had to retire to the pub at the bottom of the hill. That left four of us to climb West Dragon Hill, zoom down the other side and crack along the B road back towards Wantage. We turned off to go through West Challow and on the Fox, where we were the penultimate group to arrive. | ||

Saturday morning off-road ride | 2* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Crowmarsh Gifford C of E Primary School |
Description:Off-road rides around local trails - this one starting at Crowmarsh Gifford (near Wallingford) and heading East to take in some of the prime trails of the Chilterns.Start point: Road outside Crowmarsh Gifford C of E Primary School, Old Reading Road, OX10 8EN. Grid Ref 618890 Will be 20 to 25 miles on a variety of terrain (nothing scary) at a moderate pace. A well-maintained mountain bike with knobbly tyres is required. Please let the leader know if you are coming in case the ride needs to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. |
||
Report:A nice fresh day for an off-road ride. 4 of us headed out from Crowmarsh to Grim's Ditch, a wonderful mile of singletrack built by the ancient Norse people - how did they know?We then had to climb and chose the one at Hailey, past the King William IV pub (though it wasn't early this early!) We crossed the road and followed a track that would have been very nice if not for the nettles, into Stoke Row. We took the road east out of Stoke Row and half way down a hill, swung right and climbed on bridleway. Then working our way round south and eventually to the junction of the A4074 and B4526. Along the B road for a bit then right and through the woods up to Woodcote. Lovely singletrack, though slightly uphill in this direction. After passing through Woodcote to the north and crossing the A4074 again we had a well-earned and fast and rooty descent. Then picked up the road to Ipsden and Well Place. We left the road again and climbed up past Handsmooth House, where large areas of land have been stripped back for a redevelopment. Looking it up on the web, it is for Rowan Atkinson's "dream home" - also described as a "space age petrol station" - we'll have to wait and see! At the top of the climb we turned left and then had 2 great sections to complete the ride. First down through Mongewell Woods. Then back along Grim's Ditch. There was a 'ping' from David B's bike here - a spoke broke. We zip tied it to another and he took it easy for the last couple of miles back to the cars. All said, a very pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning. | ||

Report:Tonight we headed west first for a change, along the canal to Challow, then up Cornhill Lane crossing the main road to drop down the Letcombe road before taking a right down Green Road. Whilst the track hasn't quite recovered from the winter, it was at least possible to cycle along, dodging the deepest ruts without having to dismount, which is a marked improvement compared to the last time we attempted it.We then took a right to bring us in to Letcombe Regis where we found a new piece of single-track hidden in the hedge parallel with the main track - it's beyond me how we've never spotted it before. Then it was on up Castle Hill to the Ridgeway, across to South Fawley were we spotted a bottle of beer with a ribbon on it beside a bench (..it was tempting, but there was a farmer with a shotgun in the field nearby so we though we'd best leave it). We then worked our way back towards the Ridgeway and down Gramp's Hill into Letcombe Bassett, then Regis, and finally back to Grove via Wantage and the cycle track. George Anstis joined us tonight to find out what his father does every Tuesday night, "I'm not doing this again" were his words at the top of Castle Hill! | ||

Description:Enjoy an easy-paced ride around the local lanes.I thought that we might put our summer fitness to the test on one of the last evening rides and face the challenge of Dragon Hill (White Horse Hill). A chance to ride this into the evening sun at a measured pace. Shortcut for those that don't fancy it on the night!! Out and return via the usual routes. Riders:Alex PethybridgeAndrew Bailey Dave Cox Fiona Ashby Maurice Bawden Michael Tayler Nicole Pethybridge Paul Watson Steve Burr Steve Joyce Steve Swanton Val Smith Riders = 12 Weather:Report:Well what an eventful evening it turned out to be!12 of us set out out from Grove including two welcome newcomers Andrew Bailey and my son Alex Pethybridge. We made it onto the ridgeway road B4507 without incident and regrouped by Windmill Hill. A little after that Val unfortunately had to retire due to bringing her husband's bike as hers had a late minute puncture which caused a few problems. As I had been with the front of the group I retraced to gather up with Steve Swanton who was a great back marker. We then chased the group along the road as they were obviously very enthusiastic about hitting the main climb of the evening. The 'Steves' in the group then had a major role in the evening's events. Steve Joyce had suffered a puncture which at least meant we could catch up. After various offers of new tubes he decided to repair the existing one which worked well until the valve broke and all the air exploded out again. An alternative repair was carried out to another tube - despite the offers of new tubes - a true cyclist! By this time the group had been sent ahead to 'enjoy' the climb up to White Horse Hill. It was worth the view and an easier challenge than earlier in the year. Despite the warning of the descent another of our group's Steves - Steve Burr, took a nasty tumble on the way down. Whilst not badly hurt he had a bit of a hole in his knee and was quite shaken. At least Steve Joyce had caught up with us and to avoid any further delays and people getting cold Maurice took over the route finding and led everyone back towards Grove. This enabled Steve S, Alex and myself to take a leisurely pace escorting Steve B back home. All in all quite my most eventful ride of the year. Everyone did make it back safely and I hope it didn't put anyone off. Thank you to everyone who played their part in helping out - and my note on the windscreen. Looking forward to seeing everyone again with perhaps a little less drama! | ||

The roads were also very quiet throughout, very little traffic which was goodWe got the boring bit to Steventon done quickly and then through Abingdon and the seldom cycled road past Dalton Barracks. We tackled Old Boars Hill which was after the long drag up Lamborough Hill through Wootton. After the climb we were treated to fantastic views of Oxford bathing in golden evening sunshine. The fast descent followed and then it was a quick ride back through Marcham, Garford and West Hanney. Legs were pretty tired after 44km at 26kph average so there was a half-hearted Denchworth Dash before returning at 8.20pm as the light began to fade. A very pleasant evening ride | ||

Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:80-100km all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, riding pace 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.This was a route I planned to lead in January but it was snowing A ride north of Oxford taking in Cumnor, Eynsham and Bladon to Woodstock where we can take elevenses. Then via Bletchington and Islip for a lunchstop at The Victoria Arms in Old Marston. We will then navigate roads of my boyhood adventures through Oxford and return to Wantage via Kennington, Radley and Abingdon. Potential tea-stop at The Throwing Buns if required. Total distance 107km (66 miles) with mostly flat terrain. EDIT :- Tweaked route slightly to go through Woodstock (would be a shame to bypass it) where we can take a short break as lunch will be quite late. Also a nicer/quieter route through Oxford. |

Riders:Chris WaltersJohn Talbot Nick Dunton Nicole Pethybridge Richard Preece Steve Swanton Riders = 6 Weather:Report:We definitely had the better day of the weekend! Mostly sunny and fairly warm although cool when the Sun went in.Six riders headed off to Childrey up probably the hardest hill of the day. We then turned away from the wind and had a glorious tailwind blowing us at a fast pace to Southmoor, Appleton and Cumnor. After the drop to Farmoor Nick headed off to run the Tombola at the Vicar's Fun Day in Sutton Courtenay. He'll appear later in the story We headed through Eynsham and a rather busy road towards Long Hanborough (one deliberate close pass was not appreciated). We turned left to climb into Church Hanborough and drop into Long Hanborough on a quieter road. Steve had the great idea of stopping in Bladon for a break rather than the unknowns of Woodstock. An excellent value teastop (http://www.parkhousebladon.co.uk/) and highly recommended. After refreshment we headed to Woodstock and then out to Bletchingdon and Islip. We were on roads I often cycled as a boy to Woodeaton (where I got stung by a wasp on my leg!) and Marston. Then the slight disaster of the ride as we were told there was a 40min wait for food at the Victoria Arms. This turned into 60mins and then 75mins and we were not impressed. Nice surroundings but terrible service. Steve and I gave up asking for our food and ended up grabbing the first two plates of food that came out whether it was ours or not! A two hour lunch break was not what we needed. I apologise for choosing it! We headed to north Oxford and a pleasant back road route into the city past the parks and museums to Broad Street. We went through Carfax and out of the city along the Abingdon Road. A quick pace through Kennington, Radley and Abingdon followed. We diverted slightly from the route to Culham to get to the Vicar's Fun Day on the green in Sutton Courtenay where we met Nick again and grabbed a tea or ice cream just before the fun ended at 4pm. We knew the wind was going to be against us for the final leg and we weren't disappointed, the Hanney Road from Steventon was a drag. We took turns to take the wind but it was still hard work. The A338 to Wantage was possibly even harder! But we were back at the Market Place at 4.50pm which was still before my 5pm estimate despite the ridiculous lunch break! A great social ride with a rubbish lunch stop. I hope I'm forgiven for that | ||

A warm welcome to Lesley and Sophie joining Barry on their first ride.We followed the route as planned stopping first by the Fox in Denchworth and then atop the Circourt railway bridge to take in the view. After a short stretch on the main road, we took the back lane through West Challow and then the bridleway up to Childrey (which was busier than I'd ever seen it!) where we took a break by the pond. The views from the track across to East Challow were just gorgeous in the late evening light. Barry, Lesley and Sophie left us at this point as they didn't fancy the canal towpath. However, it is about as smooth as I can remember it and with golden light beaming through the gaps in the trees it was beautiful (despite the greenness of the water). Report:A wonderful sunny evening.We went up to the Ridgeway via Crab Hill and Goddards Brook. Then split into 2 sections, with David, David, Pete and Richard going down at Ginge, then up, then following John and i who stayed on the Ridgeway to Scuthamer's Knob and the descent to the corner of Harwell Campus. We met again at the Bridge of Doom. It feels decidedly un-doom-like now. The main track down is much wider and smoother. So much so that David B and I tried riding up it, and succeeded for the first time in our MTBing careers! Then back home via Ardington and the same route. The brambles were out in force as we hammered back over Crab Hill. I picked up a nice couple of scratches on my arm from flying past them too close while chasing David Y. Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:An old favourite - the wrong way around (we're going clockwise just for a change). A flat 44km route, which we'll do reasonably quickly (still within the 3* range though), but please bring lights "just in case". |

Riders:Chris WaltersDavid Smith David Talboys Hugo Pile Mark Austin Nick Dunton Richard Preece Ursula Hallam Riders = 8 Weather:Report:A small but perfectly formed group tonight.The pace was solid throughout, averaging over 25 km/h for this flat route. The weather was just perfect - a little bit of wind on the return leg along the Steventon Causeway allowed David "Diesel" Smith to tow along anyone who could hang on - and the sun shone rather nicely as we just beat the sunset to Grove. Thanks everyone for making this ride most enjoyable! | ||

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A 38-40 mile afternoon ride, from Grove to Witney for tea, and back again. Riding pace of ~18km/h (11-13mph). Not very hilly - the hill South from Tadpole Bridge being the main one.Out via Denchworth, Lyford, Fyfield and Stanton Harcourt. Find our way through the cycle paths in Witney to our tea stop at Huffkins (or plan B: Cogges Farm if there are many of us). Return via Ducklington, Aston, Buckland, Charney Bassett, and (inevitably!) Denchworth. |
||
Riders:Chris WaltersDavid Yearley Des Higgs Janet Hammonds John Stamp Kerry Tucker Mark Austin Mick Davison Mila Yearley Robin Tucker Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 11 Weather:Report:We were looking nervously at the sky on this ride - the forecast was 50/50 for rain, but in the end we stayed dry and even got some sunshine.We left Grove, with Mila making a detour to pick up a rain jacket just in case and catching us up by Denchworth. Then we turned to Lyford and picked our way zig zag to Fyfield. We turned left to the main road and right to cross the Thames - I'd made the route this way round so we did this section downhill and spent the least time possible on a busy road. Over the river, and after a brief pause and the Rose Revived (no beer involved) we rode down the tiny quiet lane to Northmoor and on to Stanton Harcourt, where again we picked up a single track road into Witney, with the final section to Cogges Farm on the cyclepath. The sun came out for the tea stop, and the cake was good - particularly the 'Rolo' cake I think. But Kerry did get stung by a wasp, not so good, though I'm glad to say that it has got better pretty quickly. Setting off again, we followed a crafty route out of Witney, using a cyclepath hidden at the back of an industrial park to get under the A40 and in to Ducklington. I'm glad to say the 3 miles from Ducklington to Aston weren't against a headwind like the last time i rode it. Instead the wind was nicely behind us, which must have helped us up the hill from Tadpole Bridge to Buckland, and then home via Charney Bassett and Denchworth. Clouds were looming, but it wasn't until we had dispersed that the rain started. All in all a very pleasant ride. Quite a lot of miles for a 2*, but mostly flat and quiet. Although we did have quite a few main roads to cross, we weren't actually on them much, and the drivers were all being very polite and helpful. | ||

Cheddar Gorge | 3* |

Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Shepton Mallet - Great Ostry Car Park - BA4 5TT |
Description:UPDATED: Start time 10:00 by popular demand.Start from the Great Ostry Car park: http://carparkmaps.co.uk/carparks/view/14661 An interesting away day ride across the Somerset Levels and including the classic climb up Cheddar Gorge. 70km ride, but be prepared to get tired - most of the effort is in the back part of the ride. Please let Chris Walters know if you intend to come - this ride will not run without support. |
||
Riders:Andy NewellAndy Pixton Chris Walters David Smith John Talbot John Tranter Katherine Boyce Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Ursula Hallam Riders = 10 Weather:Report:The weather forecast was not quite right - it never quite managed "warm" and at times the wind was more ferocious than "gentle". I'm sitting here reflecting it could have been worse, as no more than 30 minutes after arriving back home, the heavens have well and truly opened!The ride really is one of four halves. Lots of undulations (even a couple of quite mean hills, and great views of Glastonbury Tor) before hitting stage 2 in the Somerset levels, before the main event of the Cheddar Gorge climb, followed by undulations back to Shepton Mallet. The first moment of note was the excellent brunch stop at Sweet's museum and cafe, which also revealed such esoterica as the engine and other bits from a Junker JU88 WWII crash wreckage, a Sinclair C5, several organs (of the keyboard variety), a pianola, a Stylophone (original) and a Van Der Graaf generator. Suitably fortified, the ascent of Cheddar was without major incident, save for Richard carrying on and missing the descent and subsequent re-ascent that five hardy souls tackled. Back on top of the plateau, we had a great wind assist most of the way to the Rocky Mountain garden centre cafe, which came at just the right time as the undulations took their toll. Afternoon tea taken (and much discussion about GPS), the remainder of the ride was relatively painless with the fantastic descent into Shepton Mallet, where our Chairman promptly threw his house and car keys down the drain, only for a team effort to retrieve them to avert a disaster. Great ride, great people - thanks for making it a memorable occasion! | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise.We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. Newcomers and returners to cycling, and accompanied children very welcome. |
||
Report:A comparatively select group tonight. Six Riders, including Ian Mackay, who joined us for the first time - a warm welcome.A slightly disrupted start, as I was a bit late in arriving following traffic disruption due to an accident in Abingdon. I think I was more flustered than anyone(!) All well once we got going, a gentle amble out through Charlton then along the Route 44 to Lockinge, a lovely long descent down into Ardington, having enjoyed the views from the top. Then back past Lains Barn (another nice descent!), taking in the sunset as we approached the end of the ride. Well done to Stanley, who completed the ride with ease, and to all for a lovely ride. | ||

Report:We picked the tougher hills this time. (OK, i picked them and the rest put up with it!)Up to the Ridgeway by Crab Hill, Lark Hill and then the steep & grassy one that Chloe calls Sheep Hill as that's what is usually on it. (Not this time though, just grass and us). Terrifically, we all 4 made it up this steep long hill without putting a foot down. Showing the benefits of a summer of active pedalling! Then we went down past Baron Wantage to the Ginge descent. This was running very well again, with options whether to go straight down the middle or swoop to the left, right and left again through "informal" trails. Next we went on the the bridge of mild peril as I think i should call it now. Doom doesn't seem quite right when the slope is dry and smooth. We had a go at riding up it too. Scores were: David B: 2 out of 3 attempts Robin: 1 out of 3 David Y: 0 out of 1 John: 0 out of 0 I'm sure DY and JD will get there one day, but will Richard A do it first? Back via Lockinge and the usual route from there. Another evening of dry trails and lots of fun! | ||

Out through the Letcombes, up Hackpen, down onto the B road, then up and over Blowingstone. Swoop round and back to go down Hackpen. We rolled gently into the Letcombes before our first hill - Holburn and then took Hackpen in our stride.We paused at the top before zooming down the Sparsholt Drop. After a brief run along the B road we turned into Blowingstone, taking care on the gravel strewn lower slopes. This is always a tough hill, but we regrouped quite quickly at the top and rolled down towards Lambourn. As we rode up the B4001 to Sparsholt we could see the sun setting to our left. So at the top we made sure that our lights were on before descending swiftly downhill. We then wiggled past the Challow cricket ground and back round Wantage to return to Grove by 8:20. A satisfying hilly ride completed at an average speed of 13 mph without mechanicals, punctures or alarms. | ||

Round the Isle of Wight | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Lymington Pier |
Description:A slightly different ride than previous years'. We will be mostly following the End to End route as used by Audax events. It's slightly shorter than the Round the Island Route. It will go via the Battery above the Needles which will be new for this ride. We will be going anticlockwise on a more inland route in the south than we've done before.We will catch the 08:45 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (£13.30, tickets bought before sailing), bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 30 minutes. We will be avoiding the Bestival weekend this year. There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (£6.20 for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines. You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding. We will car share as much as possible. There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes) but there is a café at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast! Also new for this ride will be a late morning break as it can be a long hard ride to lunch. We'll stop at the Old World Tea Rooms in Godshill for a quick cuppa/comfort break. Lunch stop will be at the CTC Affiliated Toll Gate Café near Bembridge. We'll aim to stop for afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes. But if we are seriously delayed we will take refreshments on the return ferry (probably the 17:15 or 17:55). The route is undulating with few flat sections and several stiff climbs but is very scenic. Distance is 102km (63 miles) with 1,390m (4,500 feet) of climbing. We will cycle at touring pace averaging around 18-20kph (11-12.5mph). Expect around 5.5 to 6hrs of actual cycling time and bring/wear clothing appropriate for the weather forecast. Please let me know beforehand if you are coming on the ride so I can tick you off at Lymington. |

Riders:Chris WaltersHugo Pile John Talbot John Tranter Louis Hall Phil Stubbings Richard Saunders Riders = 7 Weather:Report:What an absolutely perfect day for a cycle ride! Sunshine all day long and not too hot. BlissSeven riders arrived in good time for the 8.45am ferry even with Chris having to fix Hugo's brakes before he could board! Hugo also managed to fall off his bike during the briefing before we set off, that has to be a first on a CTCW ride We headed towards the west, ignoring the round the island route and were straight away on undulating roads to the Needles park. The narrow clifftop road with a couple of hairpins was deserted and we went to the end of the tarmac and enjoyed the views (although the views of the Needles is better from the car park below). A nice descent back down and then onto Freshwater Bay. The climbs along the cliffs on the Military Road were the longest of the day as this route avoids some of the sharp climbs inland and also Blackgang Chine. It wasn't long before we were at the Old World Café in Godshill which had excellent service and was good value. Highly recommended and surprisingly close to the route we've used in previous years, we should have stopped here before! The very undulating section to Bembridge was next but it didn't feel nearly as long as in previous years having had a break. We went to the end of the tarmac at Bembridge to complete the west to east end-to-end of the island. Lunch was taken at the Tollgate Café as we've always done and with all its usual eccentricities We had a much nicer route from Bembridge past Ryde ignoring the signposted route. We missed out the horrid traffic light junction near Ryde and the hard and busy climb afterwards. We still had to go through Wootton Bridge though which was as busy as usual. It wasn't long before we were enjoying ice creams on the beach in Cowes having negotiated the rather bizarre route which you take to avoid 100yds of pedestrianised High Street. I chose to ignore my route soon after Gurnard as I didn't want to miss out on the Old Town Hall and as we were making good time I ignored the direct route back to Yarmouth on the A-road but followed the blue signs through Wellow and Thorley. This added on a few kilometres and a couple more climbs but who's counting We made it back to Yarmouth just in time to board the 17:15 ferry, well most of us did! I couldn't board as my family who were over on the island for the day were on my ticket and were nowhere to be seen. So I was left behind to catch the next ferry after my family sauntered around the corner 5 minutes after the ferry had departed having been in Yarmouth for the past 45 mins A humongous congratulations to Hugo on completing his first 100km with consummate ease, his previous furthest ride had been just 37 miles prior to this one. A fantastic achievement and one for the memory banks. Thanks to everyone for joining the ride and making it a fantastic away day. A classic CTC touring ride | ||
