Saturday Ride from Grove

Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:

Jane Bruffell

Steve Bruffell
Riders = 18
Report:
Unfortunately Edith could not lead the ride and there were a few last minute changes. 18 riders met which included two new riders, so a hearty welcome to Nadja and Grahame.

We rode around the valley out to Shrivenham via Fernham and Longcot then back to The Tea Pot at Britchcombe Farm under the white Horse via Bourton and Hinton Parva.

Scrumptious scones and delicious homemade raspberry jam at Britchcombe Farm. The rain was falling over the areas we had been through but our luck held and we had some glorious sunshine for the tea stop.

The ride split after the stop, with seven charging up Blowingstone Hill, and the rest went back to Grove via Kingston Lisle and Uffington.

Steve B, Steve Q, Mavis, Amanda, Richard,Dave and James went up the hill. Amanda has now used all her gears on her new Cannondale! James, I understand, got to the top first!! From the Ridgeway we dropped down to the Lambourn road, and returned via Sparsholt Hill (in the rain) and New Road to the A417. As always seems to happen to me I lost half my Peleton. Three to Wantage directly and one to Stanford in the Vale so there were only three of us back in Grove. We covered 41 miles, but were back home before the thunder and lighning.

Report:
Change of destination to the Plough at West Hanney as the Black Horse weren't able to do food. It was a gorgeous evening with a pleasant cooling breeze. Amanda led 13 riders to Steventon via Lains Barn, Ginge and West Hendred, and then back to the Hanneys, where another 5 joined us - must be a record turnout for a Wantage pub night!

Report:
Easy ride North to Combe Mill. Slight rain at the start but nothing to complain about. Sun shone the rest of the day. We arrived at the Mill just after 12 had an interesting look around and where leaving just before 2pm when Kevin Hickman and everyone arrived. Delayed by a pub stop! After a brief chat we raced back to Wantage. After Chaney Bassett, rumbling tums set in, so we were distracted by exceedingly good cakes and tea at Uffington, Rex Theresa and Des left us at that point, the rest returned to Wantage. 57.5 miles with only the one puncture.

The valve separated from the tube on Rex's back wheel, this seems to be becoming a common mode of failure. Michelin have been told, it is with their technical department but we have heard nothing for ages! Maybe it we will hear one day.

Report:
Six of us left Wantage and cycled along the flat to Betterton before going up and over the Ridgeway, continuing over Hernehill Down, and taking the By-ways around Redlane Barn (Leader tip - riding the route in advance would have avoided ending up very slightly lost in a field of sheep), paused for refreshment at the pub in West Ilsley, before continueing upto the Ridgeway, which we went along for a couple of miles, before descending the steep grassy field, and then more gentle descent alongside the gallops to west lockinge before returning to Wantage. The weather stayed dry and the nettles didn't sting too much!

Newcomer Vicky and I turned up late on a pleasant sunny evening to find that Brian had kindly waiting for us in the Square. Rumour was that Edith was leading the group to Fernham, but we saw no sign of them by Stanford. Brian set off in 'pursuit' while Vicky and I returned at leisure via Park Lane.
