My first Thursday ride for a while, and how lovely it was to have a fine morning for it. And such a great group of riders! Pedalling along at the advertised gentle pace, we encountered by turns a strong cool headwind and warming sunshine. Munch in Southmoor provided a welcoming coffee stop as ever, and it was good to see the 2* riders there as well as at Old Mill Hall before we all set off.

Another dry morning how lucky! There was a lovely gathering of 1* and 2* riders at Old Mill Hall great to catch up and encouraging to see so many out! We had 6 start of the 2* with Karl out for the second time this week. we took the planned route to Fyfield out via Denchworth and Hanney and then decided to detour for coffee at Munch to meet the 1* group. We arrived first and were greeted by John Groves who had raced us to the cafe, good to see him after a long absence. After refreshments and a brief chat with the 1* group we headed back to Grove via Charney and Denchworth. A lovely ride, great company and no mechanicals.
Hopefully summer is on its way.

3* Saturday Half Day Ride - Oxford Special 3*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph).

A classic route into, around and out of Oxford. Up to Fyfield, through the Tubney tunnel, over to Sunningwell and then down to the Thames via NCN5. Into town along the towpath before the ex-Bursar's VIP tour of the centre. Coffee somewhere on St Giles before an escape north to Port Meadow, the conquering of Cumnor Hill and home.

45 miles with only one major climb.
Riders:
John Tranter
Nick Dunton
Riders = 2
Report:
A combination of dodgy weather forecasts, Easter holidays and last minute bike mechanical issues conspired to keep the numbers down on this one. However, Nick and I had a very pleasant time catching up!

Wind assisted over to Oxford, the only mechanical issue was someone else's - we stopped on NCN5 to help out a family with a puncture. Always a pleasure to ride along the Thames towpath into town and then we took in the sights before a coffee stop in the peaceful surroundings of St Cross College (retired Bursar's perks). The towpath journey then switched to the Oxford Canal up to Wolvercote, followed by a loop around Port Meadow and the successful conquering of Cumnor Hill. However, from then on the headwind was really howling and it was a bit of a grovel back, with some good swapping of the lead.

Thanks to Nick for great company.

Great to get the Tuesday Evening ride season going, (after the cancellation of week 1 due to heavy rain).
To be honest it was touch and go whether we would get out this week too, but the strong winds earlier in the afternoon abated just in time (as did the hailstorms some of us encountered on the way to the start!).
I had contingency plans for curtailing the ride if need be, but the weather gods were kind to us and it was dry with some lovely sunshine so we were able to do the full route. We even got to see a rainbow, (which I was later very sad to discover meant the 2*s got rained on). We made it back just before dusk.
Great group who were cheery and made it easy to lead. Thank you. Thanks too to those that volunteered to take the front were the wind was particularly strong.
Looking forward to the new season now with much joyful anticipation.

Planning a route using the Cantorist cafe in Childrey to meet up with the 2* group. We will head out to Denchworth, then Circourt Road and a short section along the A417 to take the gentle climb up to Childrey for the cafe. Back via the bridleway to Challow and through Wantage.

An enjoyable ride out to Cantorist cafe in Childrey. The weather was dull but the rain was only restricted to a few drops. We went out via Denchworth and Circourt and then turned right onto the main road to Faringdon before turning off to go up the hill to Childrey over the old canal.
We returned via the track out the back of Childrey to Challow, where we came down through the housing estate to the main road again. We rode along the main road into Wantage turning off into Stockham ( we said goodbye to Susan who went home as we were passing the end of her road). We returned to Grove through Stockham and the new housing estate coming out by Grove industrial estate. We followed the road into Grove and up Brereton Drive turning off through the 1* route back to the car park at Old Mill Hall.

It was nice to gather on a relatively rain-free day for a change (although we had a few spots along the way). A good group that stayed together well with lots of chat and banter. Interesting to have three out of eight bikes motorised. Fawler Hill was in the process of being resurfaced and the loose gravel wasn't great, but everyone made it up there well. Cantorist cafe was, as always, a pleasant experience and we arrived just as the 1* group was heading back out. A few more ups and downs through the Letcombes took us back to base as the sun came out.

Thanks to all for great company.

Steve Swanton
Start Time:
2:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Our Annual Spring Ride aimed at those who haven't been cycling much over the winter and want to dust off their bike and get the pedals turning again. Newcomers will be very welcome and it's an opportunity for club members to bring family and friends. Please note that children are very welcome but need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please let Steve know if you would like to come or have any queries about the ride. In case you were expecting the ride on the 7th April, we have delayed a week (and hopefully for drier weather!)

This year's ride will follow an essentially flat route around the lanes of the Vale of White Horse visiting the pretty villages of Lyford, Charney Bassett and Stanford-in-the-Vale, a round trip of about 15.5 miles. We'll have a refreshment stop at Stanford - either bring a snack or buy at the village shop. Please bring a drink to slake your thirst.

An essentially flat 17-mile loop around the Vale visiting West Hanney, Charney Bassett and Stanford-in-the-Vale, which we will take at an average 2* effort. There is a steady northwesterly breeze forecast, so we can expect both head and tailwinds along the way.

The night of the midge! After the unsettled forecast, a sunny but cool evening for a ride; the strong breeze that has blown from the north-west for the last few days had at last abated. But the consequence was a plague of midges hovering in the evening sunshine above many of the lanes along our route. Conversation was rather stifled at times by the risks of a mouthful!
As the planned route was very similar to that of the BoYB ride of Sunday, I decided to reverse it - it made a change to cycle northwards rather than southwards through Stanford.
Good to see Gareth out on his first ride for a while, Oliver on his first Tuesday Evening Ride and Karl back at the top of the leaderboard.

It's amazing what a sunny (but still chilly) and non windy day will do for a ride turnout.
Thirteen riders plus the one star crew.
We split into two groups, with Sharon taking the second, to get out of Grove. I decided to brave the road closure in Denchworth (tree surgery - we were waived through) and Sharon took the alternative route, as discussed at the start!
Having waited to see whether Sharon's group would follow through the closure (for too long, as it happens) we eventually met up in Kingston Lisle - having climbed the hill. Several e-bike riders zoomed past me up said hill, my little legs being a bit tired from yesterday's ride in The Chilterns!
I was a little surprised to see Louise going back down the hill, but at least that meant we were no longer an unlucky number of riders!
We continued as one group, and sat outside at The Grocer Chef in the sunshine - the one star group had bagged the sunniest table though.
We returned via Lain's Barn to Grove.
Good to welcome Tim and to admire Geoff's e-bike.
It should be noted that this puts Karl first on the leader board - impressive after his long forced layoff!
Thanks to Sharon and Des.

it was great to finally get some lovely weather, albeit tempered by a chilly northerly breeze. It turned out that the A34 was closed southbound all weekend and all of its traffic was funnelled through Wantage. Some route tweaking took place, but it worked out fine. It was great to welcome Matt on his first ride with us, and also great to see Mila after a few months away. It was a really nice group - thanks to Carin for leading a second group where necessary. We enjoyed the quiet lanes around Lockinge and Ginge and also very much enjoyed the coffee and cake at the Grocer's Chef in Ardington. We headed back via Kingsgrove and Charlton and back to Grove.

Slight change to the original plan as it turns out that Wendy's is shut this week. We'll go out through Lambourn as planned and then have the first cafe stop at the Tutti Pole at Hungerford. Then onto Little Bedwyn before heading for Ramsbury and Aldbourne before the second stop at Shrivenham, then returning to Wantage.
58 miles and still plenty of climbing.
PLEASE NOTE: start time of 9am as the cafe in Shrivenham shuts at 2pm.

Report:
We were lucky to have dry, warm and even sunny weather for this ride. A few different back roads near Hungerford added a bit of interest before the first stop at Eliane's. We then went onto Little Bedwyn where I had routed us across the canal over a bridge of steps! We decided to carry the bikes over rather than go on to the next crossing. The views over the downs were stunning and the route didn't take us up too steep hills, which added to the enjoyment. We made it to Shrivenham just in time to be served at the cafe before heading back to Wantage.
A great ride with great company. Thanks everyone.

The evening started off quite cold and miserable but by the time we were at Seven Barrows had turned sunny and a bit warmer. The views across the downs and fields were stunning.
I had been worried about it becoming too dark for the distance but everyone arrived before 6.20 so we were able to get away quickly, which really helped. Thanks everyone!
Thanks also to Andy P. who led a second group through Grove and Wantage before we were all able to ride together for the rest of the way. It was great to have a tailwind for the ascent and descent of Hackpen for a change.
Everything went well until just before Grove when Andy P was hit by a large deer crossing in front of him. Andy managed to stay on his bike and has luckily come away with just a few aches, a buckled wheel and lots of fur caught up in his bike. Thanks to Ed and a couple of 2*'s for staying with him and thanks to Steph who came ahead to tell Kath and I. Thanks also to Karen and Jon who came back in their van to see if we needed help, but Andy had felt ok to cycle so we had left by then. There was also a kind motorist who stopped and offered help.
An eventful end to an enjoyable ride, and so glad Andy is ok.

A chilly but dry night for a ride up Hackpen Hill. It was lovely to meet 2 new riders Oliver and Paul, who did very well to complete what is perhaps one of the tougher 2* Tuesday night rides. here's hoping to see them next week for the pub ride!
We missed Des,and Karl, due to injury, but it did mean we could take a gentle ride out and so lovely to see Jon Townsin, Gareth, Michael and Anke.
It was quite a straightforward ride and we were able to enjoy the scenery and wildlife, including hares, red kites and deer, as well as lambs.
We paused at the top of the hills and enjoyed the descents and were privileged to witness a beautiful sunset on our return journey from Goosey to Denchworth.
A lovely evening with great company.

Leaving Grove we followed the planned route through Wantage and up Holbourn and Hackpen Hills against a strong wind particularly when climbing Hackpen Hill. My thanks to those who waited for me at the top. Cycled round by the Seven Barrows and minor roads to the Cantorist arriving just in time to see the 1* group leaving. After the Cantorist most of the group went their own ways home but Roger T and myself took the Brick Kiln Lane to Goosey and caught up with the 1* route as we returned to Grove for coffee.

The weather was cold and windy at times but at least the rain held off till we had finished the ride. I do feel, however, that the climbing involved in this route is at the upper limit for a Thursday 2* ride.

Heading south for a slightly hillier ride than normal, but well worth it for the lovely scenery (and the cakes). A pretty terrible weather forecast and heavy rain first thing in the morning put most people off (understandably). In the end, it was just Richard and me setting off into the cold and gloom. But as it turned out we got lucky and didn't get any rain at all. Certainly cold and still that nagging northerly wind that has been around for too long now.

We kept up a good pace and got to Priscilla's ahead of schedule. Cake and coffee as awesome as always. Heading home was into the wind so progress was a bit slower but we made it with a smug sense of achievement!

Thanks to Richard for joining me.

Leader:

Description:
RIDE CANCELLED - Due to heavy overnight rain and extremely low temperatures, we have decided to cancel this ride.

- Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Off-road half day ride around local tracks, usually 15-30 miles. We are keen to welcome new riders of all abilities.

A ride out to the Ridgeway via The Icknield Greenway and Chilton, looping back via Scutchamer to our start point.
37 km/ 22 miles.

The tracks are wide and easy, and on Monday 22nd were in good condition. This ride would suit cyclists keen to get out and try some off-road trails with no technical difficulties. However, the distance and the fact that the ride is almost all off-road, means that it may not be suitable for those who are completely new to cycling.

I will be riding a mountain bike, but depending on the weather this week, it could also be ridden on a gravel bike.

We could finish with coffee in Wantage, though it might be an idea to bring a small snack for part way through the ride.

A good turnout for the first Pub ride of the season; Everyone arrived early, with the first group (of 6) led by Kath leaving just after 20 past, and the second group (9) about 5 minutes later, I assume the first group's ride was uneventful, as we didn't see them at all on-route; Also uneventful in our group, most of the ride was dry, but there was a brief downpour as we approached Charney, just enough to pause to put waterproofs on.... it must have been very localized, as roads where dry again as we approached the Fox, where the peacocks were noisly welcoming us! We paused and the group split with some returning direct to the start, and others opting for a beer / food. Anyone else get bitten to death my the midges whilst parking their bike at the fox?

For our first Evening 1* ride of the season, a loop around the Vale to Lyford and West Hanney (11 miles). It is also the first of our monthlysummer pub nights and there will be optional stop at the Fox in Denchworth towards the end of the ride.

Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of 10-15 miles (16-24km) at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph (13-16kph), following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.

Report:
A lovely start to our summer season of Tuesday Evening 1* rides with possibly (?) the largest 1* evening group since before lockdown. A warm welcome to Anna on her first club ride, Lucy on her first evening ride and it was good to see Martyn out on his bike again.
As there were 11 of us at the start, we split into two groups - thanks to Di for leading the second group and Michael for sweeping at the back. John caught us up during our first stop under the walnut tree in Denchworth making the round dozen.
After a day of sunshine, the evening brought overcast skies, but it was much warmer than of late. There were quite a few bugs out and, with showers around, it was difficult to know whether we were catching bugs or the odd raindrop.
From Denchworth we continued to Lyford, where we stopped by the church for a rest, natter and photocall. Approaching West Hanney, there were threatening dark clouds and showers ahead. I hoped we might weave our way between them, only to be briefly caught by a short shower just as we returned to Denchworth - too close to the pub to stop to don waterproofs. Seven of us stopped for a convivial drink or meal at the Fox, where we were joined by members riding with the other groups, Thanks to Di for lead the rest of the group directly back to Grove.
Thank you all for your company on a most enjoyable evening. See you all again soon.
