Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. Ride out to Southrop just West of Lechlade visiting some of the country lanes and villages in the area. This is a largely flat ride of 72 km with a tea stop at Lechlade Garden Centre after 39 km.Nick Mob 07582 483315 (for queries on the Friday evening/Sat) |
||
Report:Well at one point about 1430 it looked like we might avoid the rain but it was not to be! Shortly after this it swept in for the rest of the afternoon. Otherwise it was good-paced, incident-free ride on quiet roads for the hardy souls who turned up. Those looking at the map of the ride below will spot an interesting phenomenon, a 40 m cliff drop at Lechlade. Maybe someone can work out the rise in air pressure during our 40 minute tea stop?Thanks for an enjoyable ride guys! | ||

If you switched your Garmin off at the break it will take a while to find the altitude again when you switch it back on. If you press start before it equilibrates it will show a large rise or drop. |
London Sightseer | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:8:30 am |
Start Location:Hampton Hill |
Description:PLEASE NOTE :- Any CTC Wantage riders who have entered this audax will need to lead themselves or co-ordinate themselves into a group. I will be otherwise engaged! - John TSee all the major sights and some fascinating lesser known parts of one of the world's great cities. Using mainly cycle routes, cycle paths and river paths you will see see London at its quieter weekend pace. This is an audax event and pre-entry is mandatory. See http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/16-559/ for full details. The route mainly follows cycle routes and is surprisingly quiet although not quick by any means. You get to see lots of famous London landmarks. There are a few busy sections, e.g. near Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and St Paul's so be prepared to mix it with London traffic occasionally. However this is the weekend version of this ride so it should be quieter. The ride is 100km and essentially completely flat, Greenwich Hill offering the only serious uphill of the day. It is slow progress at times and will take a lot longer than you expect!! |
||
Riders:John TalbotRiders = 1 Weather:Report:No other CTC Wantage riders were seen on this ride. If you were there let me know!I led a group of usually runners and occasional cyclists round this audax, for most of them it was their first ever 100km ride. Roads were much quieter on a Sunday compared to the mid-week addition. Some of the touristy bits were busy with peds though. Highlights included a sprint down the closed Mall! We made it round well inside the cut off time on a mostly dull overcast day but not cold. | ||

Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. All too soon, it's our last Tuesday evening 1* ride of the season. We'll finish with a flat loop into the vale to Charney Bassett. Out via Denchworth and Lyford, returning via Asti Stud, a loop of about 10 miles. Lights required due to the early sunset.Don't forget that we have 1* rides continuing throughout the year (usually) on the third Saturday afternoon of the month with the occasional extra ride too. These are usually 15-20 miles with a tea stop. Do join us. |

A healthy group of 12, including 5 new or newish members. Welcome to Doug, out on his first ride with us, plus the Stiles family - Jo & John with Oliver & Sophie.Lovely warm September evening, we set off at a relaxed pace. After the statutory 1* "pause" at Denchworth, we moved on to Lyford where we enjoyed a break by the church, before curling round to Charney Bassett. As it was a sunny evening, before heading back past Asti Stud we diverted up to Goosey to enjoy the village green, as there seemed to be good time before getting dark, although two had chosen to head back. Coming back through Denchworth, Tony kindly offered to give us access into the grounds of Denchworth Manor, and he gave us a nice talk on it's history. Headed back to Grove with numbers depleted, as quite a few lived in Denchworth! Lights were definitely needed now! All in all a great way to end the season. Thank you Tony for the impromptu tour and thanks to all for a lovely ride. See you all on a weekend 1* soon! | ||

Report:Firstly, welcome to Patrick on his first off-road ride with CTC Wantage.We were just three tonight and opted for a reasonably short ride. From the Old Mill Hall in Grove we took the cycletrack to Wantage and the path around Harcourt and Charlton up to the bottom of Larkhill. From there we went via the bridal path to Lockinge and up to the Ridgeway via Goddard's Brook and the point to point course. After a bit of messing around with a split tyre, probably caused by a flint, which was failing to self-seal, we proceeded along the Ridgeway and dropped down the Ginge singletrack. From there it seemed only right and proper to introduce Patrick to The Bridge of Doom, before heading back to Wantage and Grove. We will continue to ride through the winter. It looks like decent lights will be needed for next week onwards, as otherwise it will be a bit tricky on the downhill sections, especially through the woods. | ||

At Baulking we passed a group of Grench riders with 4 pinch flats caused by the same pot hole. Telling them we were heading to the pub didn't brighten their evening.Soon we arrived at the College Farm pub in Watchfield and enjoyed a fantastic evening with good food, drink and chatter. We even shouted out many of the answers to the pub quiz much to the delight of participants near by. Once well fed and watered we unlocked our bikes, turned on our lights and made our way back to Grove along the safest and most direct route back. It felt chilly to start but we all warmed up and enjoyed a good bike ride in the darkness. All in all a lovely and very enjoyable evening. | ||

Easy Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs. A ride through the Vale to Garford and back visiting Denchworth, Charney Bassett and Lyford with a drinks stop at the Plough in West Hanney. A round trip of about 16 miles. All welcome. |

Riders:Allen StaceyBarry Stanton David Bridge Karl Blake Lorna Swanton Louise Moggach Luke Stacey Maeve Moggach Marielle Moggach Martin Hook Steve Swanton Tim Parr Riders = 12 Weather:Report:Our first taste of Autumn today, with temperatures back to normal after the heatwave of the last week. 12 riders set off from Grove on an overcast afternoon with a cool breeze. Martin was riding yet another “new” tandem. This time, a lovingly renovated Swallow tandem in mauve, the colour chosen by his stoker, daughter Marielle. We also welcomed Allen and his son Luke on their first 1* ride with us and Tim on his first Saturday.We stopped briefly in Denchworth and by the church in Charney Bassett, but it wasn’t an afternoon to linger. On our third stop, on the road to Garford, the hedgerows were brimming with berries, and we took the opportunity to pick a few juicy blackberries. And then a shower overtook us, but fortunately lasted only a few minutes Although our route was out and back from the Hanney-Southmoor Road to Garford, the views and perspectives on the return leg were surprisingly different. And it was nice to find the Hanney-Southmoor to finally open again with a lovely new surface. Soon we were in West Hanney and pulling up outside the Plough. We were able to bring our bikes through the side gate into the pub garden and enjoyed a relaxed drink in the refurbished bar in what is now a community owned pub. We enjoyed more good tarmac on the way back to Denchworth, however, it is alarming to see how badly the Denchworth-Grove road is breaking up already. Back in Grove just before 5 after a relaxed and sociable ride. Thanks everyone for your company. | ||

Sunday Ride to Cycling Picnic at Standlake | 2* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A ride at standard 2* pace to Standlake to join the CTC Oxfordshire Picnic and Treasure Hunt, then returning to Grove afterwards. A flat ride with only one notable hill on the way home.We'll head out via the delightful lane from Hatford past the Hideaway and drop into the Thames Valley on the great long descent from Littleworth. After crossing the Thames at Radcot bridge, we'll continue through Clanfield then turn eastwards to Bampton, Cote, Shifford and Standlake (to arrive 12:30-1pm) Possible coffee stop in Bampton depending on how the mood takes us. I'll be aiming to cycle back by the direct route after completing the Treasure Hunt around 4pm. All welcome to join for some or part of the ride. Please bring a picnic if coming to Standlake and will be useful to have a pen for the Treasure Hunt. |
||
Report:With quite a few people away, I was the only taker for the ride out to Standlake and I chose to delay my start and take a shorter more direct route via Buckland and Aston. I arrived at Standlake just on 12:30 to find about a dozen riders sitting on the terrace in the sunshine including the Oxford group and 3 riders from the morning ride. 2 more turned up for coffee later.Neil had done an excellent job in getting the hall ready (complete with Cycling Uk banners and flags by the gateway) and there were plenty of snacks to eat. So disappointing not to have attracted more. Good to catch up with Neil - hope to see you back on your bike soon. | ||

The Dibley Dawdle - STARTING IN BENSON | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Waterfront Café in Benson - http://www.wate |
Description:A route for all you Dawn French fans – visiting Turville, where the Vicar of Dibley was filmed. Not for TV couch-potatoes, though: 109 km and 957m climbing at three-star pace.Start at the Waterfront Café in Benson - http://www.waterfrontcafe.co.uk/ [parking in St Helen’s Avenue – coming from Oxford direction, left opposite the café and immediately right]. Café opens at 08.00, so plenty of opportunity for caffeine loading and loo visits before the depart. We take the back way through Wallingford and over the Ridgeway to Ipsden, with a grungy, grass-down-the-middle lane to climb towards Stoke Row. After that, easier roads to Henley and the attractive riverside road to Remenham and the climb of Remenham Hill. From there it is fairly flat to the lunch stop at Jenner’s Café, Maidenhead. We then ascend Winter Hill [the easier way], through Marlow, then lovely lanes through Freith and Fingest to reach Turville. Then it’s hard work up the Turville Tunnel to Christmas Common and a fast descent of Watlington Hill. Then pretty flat home through Chalgrove. Afternoon tea at the Waterfront. PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY TEXT OR EMAIL IF YOU INTEND TO RIDE. |
||
Report:A fully caffeinated mini-peloton set off on time. Chief problem of the day was the large amounts of gravel that recent storms had washed into deep drifts, usually on right-angle turns at the bottom of fast descents. Caution was our watchword. Pretty uneventful to lunch, where the lack of panini at Jenner’s was lamented. Nick S punctured on the descent of Winter Hill. We were delayed in Marlow by the carnival and took a detour which, at one point, had me cycling into someone garage! My two weeks of indolence and indulgence in the Languedoc finally caught up with me on the hill out of Turville where I just managed to maintain forward momentum: definitely lantern rouge here. We saw the John & Dulcie Walker memorial road race go past at Chalgrove [they were going faster than us]. We finished with a civilized afternoon tea back at Benson. | ||

Cycling Picnic and Treasure Hunt |
---|
Leader:Neil Warner |
Start Time:12:30 pm |
Start Location:Standlake Village Hall, Rack End, OX29 7SB |
Description:A Picnic and Treasure Hunt to celebrate a great summer of cycling for all of the CTC groups in Oxfordshire.Several groups have rides to Standlake or make your own way there. There is also an easy ride starting from the hall at 10am. See other rides for details. The schedule: 12:30 – Picnic time! On the field, or if wet in the hall 14:00 – Treasure Hunt (about 10 miles, family-friendly) The Treasure Hunt has been planned by Robin Tucker. There are up to 20 questions to answer at various locations on a map, all reachable on minor roads within about 5 miles of the hall. You can work out your own route between them. We recommend splitting into small groups - ideal for families. Visit as many sites and collect as many answers as you can, but be back to the hall by 4pm for scoring. There is no set route or order, but please do not use A or B roads. Each answer is a single word or number. Prizes will be given for all children scoring 12 or more, and the highest scoring groups. Note that there is a large car park at the village hall in Standlake. It is a large hall, next to playing fields and a childern's playground. The event is organised by CTC Oxfordshire, who will provide drinks (tea, coffee, squash), and some crisps and biscuits as these can be hard to carry by bike! The hall will be available from 09:30 to 16:30. Please contact Neil for more info. |
||
Riders:Allen StaceyLuke Stacey Neil Warner Riders = 3 Weather:Report:15 riders at the picnic on a lovely September afternoon, was something of a disappointment given the conditions.Neil had done a splendid job getting the hall ready and there were plenty of snacks, cakes and pizza slices on offer. Only Allen and Luke were up for the Treasure hunt and from Allen's account, they had a great time, getting around the full route in just under the 2 hours allocated, with all clues successfully gathered. Thanks to all those who contributed to putting on the event, but we evidently didn't get the message out to the groups and particularly to families to encourage them along. A learning experience for the future. | ||

Report:A bit wet on the ground, but dry above. We decided to chance Crab Hill for the first time in several weeks. It wasn't too bad, a bit slippery in places, and some brambles, but we made it through ok.Then we climbed Lark Hill and across to climb to the Ridgeway alongside Manor Road. From there we headed East, down Jolly Green Giant and up again, then down at Betterton and back via Lockinge and the NCN path. For the first time it was properly dark by the end of the ride. Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 2* |

Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. A fairly standard loop around the vale taking in Denchworth, Stanford, Southmoor, Hanneys, Steventon, Hendreds and Lockinge. There are 2 off-road sections: the bridleway over the A420 at Southmoor and the NCN Route 544 from East Hendred to Lockinge. Both are decent surfaces and perfectly rideable on road tyres.This is a 50 km ride with no significant hills, but some gentle inclines. We'll stop for tea about 3/4 of the way round at Q Gardens. |

We now faced the headwind, though the superb new road surface on the Hanney Road made the ride to West Hanney, where the Michlemass fair was in full swing, a little easier . The fact that the traffic lights were out at the top of the rise out of Steventon should have been a clue; we arrived at Q Gardens to find all power out and only cold drinks available - there were still cakes though. After a slightly chaotic stop we headed down Featherbed Lane, through the Hendreds, Ginges and enjoyed the descent past Laines Barn. With Val's help, and only one wrong turn, we negotiated the roads and avenues of Grove and arrived back at OMH just after 4:30. Thanks everyone for a very enjoyable ride. | ||

There will be ups, downs and twisty bits, but nothing that can't be ridden by anyone with a bit of off-road experience. Start: Outside the Crowmarsh Gifford Primary School, Old Reading Rd, OX10 8EN |

Report:Four of us in all, Alice and Paul as well as Ray and Robin.It was a great early autumn day. Cool to start, but sunny and not cold. Damp on the ground, but no serious puddles. Enough fallen leaves and beechnuts to make a satisfying crunch as we rode through the woods. A lot of the ride was in fact in the woods. We started out over the Grim’s Ditch singletrack. Then headed up past Hailey to do our main climb from Well Place. Then it was a nettled track to Stoke Row, and a big loop south and west through and round the woods, until we headed north once more to reach Woodcote. From Woodcote we took a steep rooty descent, and Ray picked up the only puncture of the trip. We headed over toward Icknield Way, spotting 6 parachutists and a wing-walker. Then it was north for a return visit to the excellent Grim’s Ditch track. | ||

Day one is here https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16897022 and Day two is here https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16897030. There is still availability in the hotel but it is going fast. If you would like to join us then please just drop me a line. You will need to book your own ferry and the hotel as numbers currently do not look large enough for a group booking and most of those already signed up have made their own bookings. Riders:David BridgeJohn Tranter Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Riders = 6 Report:Not much riding on the Friday, just a few 100s of metres from Whale Island, home of the Royal Navy, to the ferry port. The interesting bit had happened before that, with an accident south bound on the M3 causing 4 mile tailbacks into Winchester on the A34. All of us were held up, but some judicious cross-country work via the A272 and a number of other roads meant we all linked up on time.Embarking on a ferry with a bike is always exciting, and this time was no exception. There were plenty of other bikes already onboard by the time we arrived, which was good as that guaranteed we would be first off in the morning. With flat calm seas and some excellent Brittany Ferries food inside us, sleep came quickly aided no doubt by the beverages we also consumed from retiring. The ferry did the work and France got ever closer... | ||
