Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. Minor route edit made on Friday 4pm to remove a couple of km of potentially busy B4494.A vertically challenging, breathtaking, in more ways than one but manageable picturesque loop Southwards. We start out heading up Chain Hill (the hardest section of the ride) and will re-group at the very top, in the turn-in to Lockinge Kiln Farm. Dropping after Farnborough, down Copperage Road to pass the Harrow & its improbably sloped cricket pitch at West Ilsley, a right then takes us up the pretty and recently mended Catmore Road leading to the climb of Sheep Leaze Lane towards Peasemore before pushing South again to Chieveley. The Winterbourne / Bagnor Road is a particular favourite single carriageway lane, running alongside a bubbling stream boasting watercress for a stretch. An impromptu scenic pause can be taken near the Watermill Theatre/The Blackbird pub if required - bring whatever nibbles and drink e.g. cereal bars/bananas etc for refuelling. Turning for home at Speen on the Lambourn Road we will head up to Boxford and then turning gradually Northwest, rising steadily (some might say incessantly!) over a series of rolling climbs via Chaddleworth (Tower Hill) to attain the Saddleback Tea stop after approx. 54km. Refuelled, the plunge down the three drops of Chain Hill is just reward for our efforts. Naturally, those wishing to push-on or take a more leisurely tea stop are of course free to DIY from there - just let me know on the day please? |

Riders:Allen StaceyAndy Newell Chris Walters Hugh Falkner Jason Jones John Tranter Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Karen Townsin Lyn Taylor Nick Stokell Pam Stokell Peter Brodie Phil Ward Richard Saunders Riders = 15 Weather:Report:14 riders assembled at OMH, we had a relaxed start to proceedings as Pam was dispatched on a mission to nip home and pick up her glasses & meet us at the foot of Chain Hill.We made our way to the top of Chain in various groups and reassembled, complete with Pam & glasses, having taken a minor detour to wait at Court Hill A fly-munching descent of Copperage Road was enjoyed and we were treated to cricket in progress at West Ilsley. Here, we encountered a minor obstacle in that fresh chippings had just been laid all along the Catmore Road which made the climb arduous and the descent down right unnerving. Good skills enabled us all to emerge unscathed & without punctures ready to tackle the next climb, that of Sheep Leaze Road leading on to a further, but thankfully shorter, stretch of fresh chippings. Beautiful lanes and pretty villages followed in quick succession until we entered the Winterbourn Valley and revelled in the gentle downhill gradient whisking us towards the Southerly turn at Bagnor. A brief roadside halt for sustenance marked the start of the return leg, passing along the Lambourn Valley to Boxford where we met and were joined by Chris Walters, returning from visiting Phil Stubbings (sadly still suffering the after affects of his Mallorca mishap - get well soon Phil ) Four split off near the top of Chain Hill and headed on down, leaving the rest of us to take a relaxed tea stop at Saddleback Farm before rounding off with a final ascent to Farnborough, Chris departed Southwards and the rest of us flew down Chain Hill to end off a marvellous afternoon. Thanks all for your company and good cheer over some testing terrain and obstacles ! | ||

Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. Enough daylight to attempt my Boar's Hill route. It's a long one for 3* at 49km but it's well worth it on a bright summer evening. Pretty flat other than the climb to Boar's Hill to look down on the dreaming spires of Oxford.Quiet lanes throughout apart from a short stretch of the A415 and A338 between Marcham and Garford where we normally split into smaller groups. |

Riders:Allen StaceyDavid Smith David Talboys Jerry Bird John Talbot Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Mike Cooke Nicole Pethybridge Roger Turnbull Ursula Hallam Yvonne Bird Riders = 12 Weather:Report:A warm dry start from Grove for the 12 assembled riders. We seemed to be heading towards the blackest clouds though and the roads began to be damp from Appleton.Things got really interesting near Eaton and Besselsleigh though. What we thought was foam on the road turned out to be a drift of hail a few inches deep! The road was also flooded in several places but we had David "depth gauge" Smith with us so we knew we were OK We were just extremely grateful that we hadn't met it when it was falling out of the sky The roads were wet and a little rain was falling towards Wootton and up to Boars Hill. Still Oxford was visible from the top although the view is dominated by cranes at the Westgate development. We were treated to a rainbow near Garford and the roads dried out again. By the time we got back to Grove we had mostly dried out again as well A good strong group who kept a decent pace throughout. Many thanks to David T for sweeping | ||

Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly. Right folks, I've booked warm dry weather (actually there is now a realistic chance of sporadic thunderstorms, so come prepared please!) for a series of loops heading West, with 3 climbs separated by a good deal of rouleur territory. Woolstone #1 will check the little ring is accessible. The most Westerly loop is started by a challenging descent into Compton Beauchamp - CARE: holes, gravel and adverse camber make for a heady mixture. Woolstone #2 leading straight onto Dragon Hill (reverse) is the main event. We will stop at the very top around the corner & past the cattle grid to gather breath, regard the awesome view and consider the next cattle grid & Give Way at the foot of the hill where YOU MUST STOP. A cheeky diversion down to Uffington opens up the Westerly approach climb to Fawler/Kingston Lisle, from where we regain Baulking Lane and in the calm of the evening take the A417 right into Wantage & thence Grove. |
||
Riders:Andy CowanFrank Schroer Jason Jones Nick Fisher Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Richard Kembleton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:7 starters, quickly augmented by Frank (completing his warm up?) made a train of 8 keen to head out West. Park Lane was enlivened by an oncoming tractor, but no great drama. As Uffington flew by the anticipation of climbing was palpable & as we approached Woolstone for the first time, the greyhounds were unleashed. A flatlanders loop from Compton Beauchamp up to the Longcot Road was enjoyed, passing through tree tunnels in the cooling evening sunlight. Back to the grindstone, we tackled Woolstone again leading straight on to Dragon reversed. I have been reliably informed by the grimpeurs that Nick was first to the top, powering up a gritty and dampened road, suggesting local showers had passed by recently. Mist & low cloud were illuminated by oblique sunlight over the Vale - quite a sight. The descent safely negotiated, we settled into a useful clip again & rattled off the Fawler climb before regaining the Baulking Road. The late evening selection of A417 straight into Wantage providing a rapid and pleasing end to a really great evening.My thanks to all the group for making it such fun, a good workout with no issues at all - ride leader paradise, cheers chaps | ||

10 Mile Club 1* | 1* |

Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. Tonight we will ride through the Letcombes and climb to the top of Holborn Hill before a lovely descent into Childrey. We then follow a well surfaced bridleway to West Challow, then on to Denchworth and Grove.The climb is steepish but short enough to walk up. |
||
Riders:Clare MacPhersonKaren Townsin Mandy Wassell Naomi Merritt Nicky Clark Sheena Arnold Steve Boreham Riders = 7 Weather:Report:What a gorgeous evening. We were all stunned by the heat and undeterred by the possibility of thundery showers - well, if it rained it would be warm rain wouldn't it?After an unexpected tour of the Wantage Leisure Centre car park, we found the track to Letcombe Regis and on to Letcombe Bassett. Everyone made a valiant attempt at Holborn Hill, a welcome brief shower cooling us before the well earned descent into Childrey. The bridleway towards Challow was lined in cow parsley with not too many nettles but the surprise of the evening was a passing traction engine on the way home to Grove. Welcome back to Mandy on her first ride of the season. A great social ride with good company. Thanks everyone | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
||
Riders:David BrownDavid Yearley John Davies Richard Pethybridge Robin Tucker Thomas Clayton Riders = 6 Weather:Report:Also, a new rider Tom.The weather was dry, but with risk of thunder storms. We took the normal journey out via Crab Hill, and then it was up Lark Hill and right, across to climb up to the Ridgeway in the field by Manor Road. We headed East, keeping our eye on clouds and hearing the occasional rumble of thunder. We decided not to go south of the Ridgeway as that's where darker clouds lurked and it would make any retreat harder. So we headed down Jolly Green Giant, and then turned right to climb back to the ridge. Keeping east, we came down at Ginge, which was a great run. Then the Bridge of Doom! All got down safely and some of us had a go at climbing it as well. 3 successes, one failure. I'm not saying who... We then turned west and back to Wantage and Grove. A few specks of rain could be felt. But, apart from that it stayed dry until we got back and I was able to load a dry and mostly clean bike into my car. Then, about 5 minutes in to my drive home, all the rain came down! That's what I call good timing! | ||

Off-road Afternoon Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:1:30 pm |
Start Location:Goring, Manor Road / Long Meadow SU 59959 80297 |
Description:If there is a theme to this ride, it is woody singletrack. There will be more twists and turns than a Le Carré spy thriller in the woods around Woodcote. In exchange, there will be a bit less climbing - not none, but a bit less, and the two main climbs are quite close to the start of the ride. Also there is no major hazards along the route, as long as you watch for fallen trees. This is a route that has proved popular in previous years with riders of a wide range of abilities - everyone can enjoy swooping through the woods, and the faster riders find the turns come more quickly which keeps the challenge levels up. We re-group at the end of each section, which doesn't take long, and no-one gets lost in the woods.Top tip: don't wear your darkest sunglasses in the woods! Twice monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. These will be on the second Saturday afternoons and 4th Sunday mornings. --- General description: The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. |
||
Report:We were joined by Nick Smart from Wallingford, and Jesse from Virginia USA who was doing some reconnaissance before moving to the UK and naturally wanted to check out the trails too.This was a great ride in the woods. It was damp enough to keep the trails firm, but not wet enough to cause any problems. Just as well as Jesse was borrowing my daughter's very basic mountain bike. We followed a route I've used before, doing the 2 main claims early, then going in and out the woods near Woodcote. It was rounded off with a nice run along the Thames Path and back to Goring. | ||

Description:SORRY THIS RIDE CANCELLED - I've joined the growing list of sick ride-leadersA route for all you Dawn French fans – visiting Turville, where the Vicar of Dibley was filmed. Not for TV couch-potatoes, though: 109 km and 957m climbing at three-star pace. Start at the Waterfront Café in Benson - http://www.waterfrontcafe.co.uk/ [parking in St Helen’s Avenue – coming from Oxford direction, left opposite the café and immediately right]. Café opens at 08.00, so plenty of opportunity for caffeine loading and loo visits before the depart. We take the back way through Wallingford and over the Ridgeway to Ipsden, with a grungy, grass-down-the-middle lane to climb towards Stoke Row. After that, easier roads to Henley and the attractive riverside road to Remenham and the climb of Remenham Hill. From there it is fairly flat to the lunch stop at Jenner’s Café, Maidenhead. We then ascend Winter Hill [the easier way], through Marlow, then lovely lanes through Freith and Fingest to reach Turville. Then it’s hard work up the Turville Tunnel to Christmas Common and a fast descent of Watlington Hill. Then pretty flat home through Chalgrove. Afternoon tea at the Waterfront. |

A warm welcome to Jules on her first ride with the club and welcome back to Alvaro and to Carin on their first rides of the season.I do love riding through the lanes of the vale at this time of year when the verges are brimming and there are lots of flowers to enjoy. An easy ride is the perfect way to take it all in. We stopped in West Hanney and found that the church was open, so we went in to have a look around. One thing that Alvaro noticed was the extraordinary longevity of some of the previous inhabitants as recorded on one of the memorials in the nave. We continued on to Lyford, where we stopped by the almshouses, and then again in Denchworth to admire the climbing roses on the two thatched cottages by the T-junction (or at least I did, while everyone else was deep in chatter!). Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:7:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:The season has stated strongly and I am really encouraged by what is going on. At our last Committee Meeting, we felt it would be helpful to have a mid-season get together for the Ride Leaders, to make sure that we are all familiar with the various rules and protocols and also to have the chance to share any questions and problems between us. Inevitably, some Ride Leaders will have experienced different situations and challenges to others and we thought it would be helpful to pool our experiences.So, we have booked the Mervyn J Shaw Room at Old Mill Hall (the same upstairs room we used for the planning meeting in February) for 7.30-9pm on Thursday 16th June for this. If you can’t be there, please feel free to email me any thoughts or questions you might have for us to share on the night. |

Easy Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A slight change of plan - a sociable ride to Childrey to visit the traditional village fete in the grounds of Childrey Manor (entrance opposite the playing fields on the road out towards Sparsholt). Cream teas and other refreshments will be available and we'll have a bit of time to have a look round and soak up the atmosphere. I understand there will be a small entry fee. Further details here:http://www.sparsholtandwestcot.org/content/childrey-fete-childrey-manor-saturday-18th-june-3-6pm We'll make a loop through the Vale visiting the pretty villages of Denchworth, Lyford, Charney Bassett and Goosey. After a short stretch of the A417 to Challow Station, we'll have a gentle climb up to Childrey before our break. We'll return via the bridleway to East Challow with lovely views across the Vale, then through Wantage "the back way". Nearly 16 miles round trip. The ride will be particulary suited to those who would like to build up to the Betjeman Ride in early July. In particular, there are short-cut options back to Grove from Charney and Goosey (but without cream tea), if anyone would like a shorter ride. |

CTC Oxfordshire Tri-Vets Century Ride 2016 | 3* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Islip Village hall |
Description:Are you aged 50 or over and fancy a challenge? CTC's triennial 100 mile rides for veterans - known as the Tri-Vets - date back to the organisation's golden jubilee year of 1928. Riders have up to 12 hours to complete a route and receive a certificate to commemorate their achievement. Once again CTC Oxfordshire will be hosting a Tri-Vets ride in 2016, one of at least 16 rides taking place during June and July all over the country. Our ride, which is notable for its WI catering and sociable character, will be held on Sunday 19 June starting from Islip about 5 miles north of Oxford. We run the Tri-vets as a group ride with riders split into 5 or 6 groups of about a dozen riders each with a local leader and sweeper. The groups start at 10 minute intervals from 8am, so riders can choose a faster or slower group.The route is a 100-mile tour of Oxfordshire passing through Otmoor, the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, the Thames Valley and the Vale of White Horse with refreshment stops at Wendlebury (coffee), North Leigh (lunch) and Steventon (tea). Although there are some climbs, the route is a relatively gentle 100. The entry fee is £15 and there will also be a charge of £15 for coffee, lunch and tea. To join us, please register through the Cycling UK website at http://www.cyclinguk.org/cycling-uk-tri-vets-rides-2016/. We will then send you further details of the ride and refreshment options. Our ride has always been popular and numbers are limited (to 72) so early registration is advisable. P.s As of 16 April we already have over 60 entries, so please don't delay booking if you are hoping to come. I've updated the link to the Tri-vets page on the Cycling UK website. Route now available - although similar to 2013, there are some variations, in particular to accommodate the new coffee stop in Wendlebury. |

Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. The longest day of the year deserves a decent ride to cap it off. A relatively flat run through Denchworth, Stanford-in-the-Vale and Uffington culminated in the climb to the top. Well done in particular to Olivia for managing the ascent without stopping, a triumph of mind over matter. The return was via the spring line road (passing the 2* group heading in the opposite direction), and a sneaky cut-through from Childrey to West Challow before some enjoyed a Denchworth Dash en route to the finish. Honourable mention goes to Phil Stubbings, back on a 3* ride while still rehabilitating from a serious crash, and thanks go to Jon Townsin for sweeping so admirably. | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Thought we could take the alternative route up Hackpen. After wending our way through the Letcombes, we'll turn left at Childrey Hollow to pick up the quieter road to Hackpen Hill. Once regrouped at the top, we'll have a glorious downhill before having a relatively flat return. I am a slow hill climber but hopefully you won't have too long a wait at the top of the hills. |

Clear, not too hot and no rain! Our intrepid group set off for the hills of the Vale, welcoming Simon on his first ride with the club. With Wantage traversed, we all made short work of Holborn Hill.Everyone was in the right gear for the left turn out of Childrey Hollow and onwards along the Springline to Hackpen. John T raced to the top to record the moment - for many it was the first time up Hackpen from Sparsholt way. Then the glorious descent down Hackpen, into Childrey and a regrouping by the pond. We waved to the 3* group as we made our way to Kingston Lisle and through the road closed signs. Everyone's bikes coped well with the large tracts of unmade road With the evening drawing to a close, we picked up the pace to arrive back at Old Mill Hall slightly later than usual. A more challenging than normal 2* ride that everyone seemed to enjoy. Thanks to Des for sweeping. | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. A return trip to Childrey but by a cunningly different route. Out via Denchworth and West Challow with a gentle climb on a metalled bridleway up into Childrey. After a rest by the pond, we'll to Grove returning via East Challow and Stockham. About 11 miles. |
||
Report:A select group of 4 for our Midsummer ride. We took our time to enjoy the evening. After our customary stop in Denchworth, we stopped again on the Circourt railway bridge to take in the panorama across the vale towards the Downs.The bridleway from West Challow up into Childrey has a good surface and brings you out into the heart of the village after a gentle climb. Rather than stopping by the pond, we continued down the lane to the church - another lovely spot. We took advantage of the bench in the churchyard to sit, chat and look back out over the Vale. Having taken the off-road route into Wantage at the weekend, the preference was for the road on return, so we enjoyed the gentle descent down to Challow station and returned via Goosey and Asti Stud. A lovely gentle ride. We look forward to seeing everyone back for the Pub Night ride next week . | ||

Report:A pleasant evening, although somewhat wet on the ground. We were joined by Jesse from Virginia USA who was doing some reconnaissance before moving to the UK and naturally wanted to check out the trails too.Crab Hill was puddly. We climbed Goddards Brook, which was damp but not bad, then up to the Ridgeway and off the back down 'ice valley'. A 180 degree turn at the bottom, and back up the farm track. We couldn't let Jesse miss out on Ginge descent, and thankfully the rain had not wrecked the surface. It was a great run down! Then the Bridge of Doom for dessert and back via Lockinge. | ||

Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 2* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. I'm thinking it's a while since we've been to Cogges Manor Farm and John Ta tells me the cafe has been refurbished ....Likely route below. We'll head out via Southmoor, Northmoor and Stanton Harcourt where we'll pick up the delightful narrow Cogges Lane into Witney. Tea and cakes at Cogges Kitchen at Manor Farm. We'll retrace our steps a little before taking a good track over to Ducklington, returning to Grove via Cote, Great Brook and Tadpole Bridge. A generally flat ride with only one climb of note, up to Buckland, on the way back We found the road to Denchworth to be very busy last week with redirected traffic due to the railway bridge closure. May take a detour via East Challow out or back to avoid this. |
||
Riders:Barry StantonBrian Hipwell Jenny Gower Karl Blake Michael Tayler Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Terry Penn Riders = 9 Weather:Report:This may be remembered as the Tree to Tree Ride, given the number of times we took shelter from heavy showers on our way to Witney.After a heavy shower just before the start, we actually set off in pleasant sunshine but could see the showers all around. Approaching Southmoor, a large grey cloud lay ahead; a clap of thunder ushered in the first shower of the ride. Fortunately, we reached the shelter of trees bordering the A420 and waited for the worst to pass. The rain petered out after a few minutes. By the time we had crossed the dual carriageway, the the sun had came out again. We enjoyed the descent to Newbridge and the good tarmac along Moreton Lane. Having just taken my cagoule off, of course, it started to rain again. Fortunately there was a good sheltered spot just around the corner and we sat out a heavy shower and hailstorm relatively dry. We weren't so lucky with shower #3, which caught us as we entered Stanton Harcourt. With nowhere obvious to shelter, I pressed on to eventually find two large chestnut trees on the corner of Blackditch. The rain became even heavier as we waited before eventually relenting .We continued on to Cogges Lane. Shower #4 caught us in relative open country and although we did eventually find a large tree for shelter, by now we were all pretty wet. Fortunately it wasn't cold. As the rain died down, we continued into Witney, turning down the cycle track to Manor farm and the welcome shelter of the Cogges Kitchen cafe. This was a new tea-stop venue for most of the riders, and one we've not used for a few years. Service was quick and I am pleased to report that the scones, bakes and cakes were of suitably large proportions for weathered cyclists! By the time we left, the rain had stopped. Given the rains, we took a different route back, through the centre of Witney (passing LibFest) and into Ducklington on road, leaving the track for another, drier ride. As we climbed the small rise on the Aston Road, the sun came out and we had a great view over the Thames valley. Soon the roads started to steam! For the rest of the ride we had a perfect evening, with the wind behind us most of the way too. Thanks everyone for braving the elements and your company on a memorable ride. | ||

Off-road Morning Ride | 2* |

Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Top of Ashbury Hill |
Description:Twice monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. These will be on the second Saturday afternoons and 4th Sunday mornings.The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. This ride explores the Ridgeway and the Lambourn Downs. 34.5km and 380m of climbing make it suitable for just about anyone who has off-roaded before. Nothing particularly technical, and the option of a coffee stop in Lambourn as we pass through. Grid ref of start is SU 273 843, the car park at the top of Ashbury Hill on the B4000 from Lambourn. |
||
Report:A really nice loop from the top of Ashbury Hill in a clockwise direction via Lambourn. Some paths were a little overgrown but the trails were generally in a very good condition. Coffee and refreshments were enjoyed at the Lambourn Cafe mid-ride, an unusual bonus for an off road ride. A special welcome to two new riders, David Green and Stephanie de Chassy. They both did really well coping with some of the grass covered ruts! | ||

Description:Please can you let me know by this Friday (24th) if you are intending to come. I need to let cafes know numbers or to cancel them if everybody is busy. Thanks KatherinePLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF STARTING LOCATION. MAJOR EVENT TAKING PLACE AT ORIGINAL VENUE. A ride of 2 halves: the morning will be into the Chiterns, the afternoon the Vale of Aylesbury. A reasonably hilly ride (just over a 1000m and about 100km). We start by picking up the Chiltern Cycleway just beyond Chinor before wending our way on various cycle ways to Wendover woods. We'll stop for an early lunch at the Cafe in the Woods. With the majority of the climbing done, we'll go through Tring to pick up the NB cycle route at Cublington. We'll be on that for most of the afternoon. It'll take us through Quainton to the cafe at the George and Dragon for an afternoon cake stop. Then it's on through the grounds of Waddesdon Manor, Long Crendon and Shabbington before we return to Thame. The overall pace of this ride will not be fast with the amount of climbing. As with all my hilly rides, you'll be waiting for me at the top of the hills! |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonChris Walters David Talboys Hugh Falkner Katherine Boyce Nick Stokell Ursula Hallam Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Luckily the hoards of runners expected to flood the car parks of Thame did not materialise . But the car park chosen was so obscure, there was some difficulty in everyone finding it . But just after 9, 6 of us set off to Chinor to met Ursula. It was a lovely start, sunshine, no wind, a gentle down hill all the way to Chinor. The 7 of us then did the first of the hills - up to Bledlow Ridge.And then it was a series of hills for the next 50 kilometres or so. Fantastic views, no sun and lots of waiting for the leader to reach the top! The final hill before lunch was very steep and relentless. But we all made it. Then on to the Café in the Woods (highly recommended) down the wrong way on a one way private road. Much to the disgust of a random dog walker but we didn't cause any traffic issues (honest!) After a very pleasant lunch, we went the right way down the one-way road and descended to Tring. A rolling afternoon ensued, a continuation of awful motorists, very busy main roads, reasonably quiet back roads, great views and much less hills. The tea shop attached to the George and Dragon in Quainton proved as good as the pub was last year. Great ice cream, milk shakes and coffee, you can't ask for more . The final 25km into Thame flew by and then goodbye to Ursula as she took the gentle downhill back to Chinor and we were back in the obscure car park. Thank you all for contributing to a really great club ride. Oh and did I mention that Hugh cycled to the start? | ||

We'll then stop for a coffee and a chat at the end of the ride. This time we'll warm up through Denchworth, Goosey, Stanford in the Vale and Longcot before heading up over the Ridgeway. We'll climb via Compton Beauchamp (steep but short) and Ashbury (less steep but longer) before the glorious descent past Ashdown House and into Lambourn. We'll then head back up the B4001 and down Hackpen Hill, through the Letcombes and back to Wantage. The Bay Tree Cafe was good last time, so we'll head there for tea and cake for those who would like to. |

Everyone made short work of the climb and we pressed on to Ashbury Hill which was more of a challenge but well worth it for the fantastic descent into Lambourn, enjoyed by everyone at their own pace.We then set off for the grind back up the Ridgeway.
