Saturday afternoon ride from Grove 3*
Leader:
Katherine Boyce
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Weather update @ 12: no change in the forecast so ride will go ahead, expect showers and please come prepared.

9.30 Saturday morning. It looks like we are going to be playing dodge the showers this afternoon, with the main one being at 1pm. I will make a final decision at 12 but at the moment the ride is on, with waterproofs ;).

Monthly 60-70km (38 - 45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.

Its the right time of year to go a bit further, so thought we could venture into the Cotswolds and have tea in Filkins. The A420 should be a doddle at Shrivenham as it will still be closed, then its Highworth, Filkins. Returning via Bampton, Buckland, finishing with Charney and Denchworth. We are unlikely to be back before 5.30.

The sharp eyed amongst you will realise this route is provided courtesy of David Smith. Thanks David :)

Report:
So we started to assemble at Old Mill Hall as the rain started to clear and there was a hint of blue sky. We came up with a plan b if we needed it (bail out at Highworth) and off 4 of us set. Round the corner we encountered Jan and then there was 5.

My optimism at removing my waterproof lasted until Goosey - the coolness and hint of rain made me reconsider. The heavy shower on the way to Longcot showed I was right to reconsider :-(. It was a bit much that the heaviest part of the shower was when the sun was shining!

After that, we enjoyed a very quiet a420, picking our way through some work vans to reach the pedestrian and cycle way through to the Highworth road and a lovely ride through the Cotswolds to Filkins. Disappointment at the lack of scones was overcome with a rather tasty cherry and raspberry cake. We went inside when the temperature dropped, the wind increased and the thunder rumbled. Despite this, the threatened rain never appeared and with raincoats removed we carried on to Clanfield where we said goodbye to Jan.

An uneventful return to Grove with Dave giving us a peerless display of hill climbing at Buckland Hill. Despite the forecast, just one heavy shower and a bit of thunder ensured a pleasant afternoon ride.

Wallingford 2* Afternoon Ride 2*
Leader:
John Talbot
Start Time:
1:30 pm
Start Location:
Wallingford Market Place
Description:
I'm leading this ride on behalf of CTC Wallingford but of course it's open to all and an opportunity for CTC Wantage riders to ride a bit further east than normal.

This will be a ride of around 30-40km (20-25 miles) at a riding pace of 18-21kph (11-13mph) with a tea-stop. Approx. 3.5 hours duration.

Starting from the Market Place in Wallingford the easiest place to park is in the car park on Goldsmiths Lane which is free on a Sunday and very close by.

We'll explore the small villages north-east of Wallingford towards Watlington and Chalgrove. We'll stop at Benson Waterfront on the way back for tea and cake. A couple of rises early on but no major hills.

Eleven riders (five Wantage regulars) on this gentle ride around the villages north east of Wallingford.

There must have been a lot of rain in the area yesterday as some of the roads had drifts of debris on them and we had to cycle through a flood at one point!

No dramas, a nice relaxed ride in good company.

Many thanks to Ian Robinson for sweeping the ride and making sure we didn't lose anyone off the back :)

Looking for an alternative route up to the Ridgeway we went up the singletrack climb from Ginge. It's certainly a tough climb and worthy of Strava's category 4 rating. We then routed East along the Ridgeway, ducking under the A34 before dropping into Chilton and working our way back via the Harwell campus and route 544.

We found a hidden section of narrow boardwalk which we managed to negotiate after a couple of failed attempts, but gave the jump we found in the middle of a downhill section a miss!

I was looking at the roads I've cycled in 2014 and unbelievably I've not been up White Horse Hill this year yet. So it's time to put that right :)

We'll take diversions from the springline road to warm up on Windmill and Hackpen hills before the main event. And then we'll have a flat fast return via Uffington, Baulking, Goosey and Denchworth. 38km total.

Report:
Fourteen riders headed out from Grove on a cooler evening than recently and a rather stiff head wind which split the group up a bit towards Letcombe.

We regrouped at the top of the rarely climbed Windmill Hill before heading along the springline road to Hackpen Hill. Karen T wasn't feeling too good so headed back at this point.

We all took Hackpen at our own pace before the fast descent to Sparsholt. Janet caught us up at some point on the way to Dragon Hill as she had waited for us in Letcombe which we didn't go through!

The road to the White Horse is a classic climb with great views and a pretty steady gradient. After regrouping at the top and taking a few photos we descended to Woolstone and Uffington.

A stonking tailwind led to a spirited ride through Baulking and to the A-road. The usual route through Goosey and Denchworth took us back to Grove.

The ride took the predicted 2 hours and was well disciplined. Well done everybody and an extra special mention to Andy P for sweeping, awesome job (beer)

Start Time:

Start Location:

Description:
Tonight we'll be heading to Ginge and West Hendred, with a few climbs on the way, but also two long descents to enjoy. Out via Charlton and Sustrans route 544 through Lockinge, we'll climb gradually on this lovely back route to Ginge. After a rest, we'll enjoy a sweeping descent into West Hendred and continue through the village to the A417. There will be about 1 mile of main road back to Ardington, where we will tour through the village and below the Millenium Stones. After a climb back up to the A417, we'll enjoy our second fast descent down into the Vale past Lains Barn and back to Grove via Grove Park Drive. A round trip of about 12 miles, but all taken at a leisurely pace.

Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.

6 riders on the 1* ride this evening and it was good to see Susan back out on her bike.

We followed the route as planned, using the back roads through Charlton and Cooper's Lane to cut through to Charlton Road on our way to the start of the Sustrans Route on Larkhill. We stopped by the fire engine in Lockinge and then again at Ginge en route to West Hendred. The final ascent to the crest of the hill before the sweeping descent into West Hendred always seems further than I remember it. But the reward is the great view and a great descent.

Fortunately, the traffic on the A417 was relatively light and we soon turned off into the quieter surroundings of Ardington. After touring through the village, everyone managed the climb up to the Lains Barn crossroads - good practice at using the lower gears. Here Brian and Edith turned down the main road to Wantage, while the rest of us enjoyed our second long descent into the Vale.

Back in Grove at 8:05pm after an enjoyable ride. Thanks everyone.

Only two of us tonight, so took the opportunity to try out a few rarely ridden tracks to see what state they were in.

We routed up to the Ridgeway via Lark Hill, then along the B4494 for a short while before cutting off to the left down the bridleway, although we waited at the road junction for a short while to greet the 3* riders who were slogging up the hill.

From there we made our way to the monument before cutting back to the B4494 for a while, then cut off towards Farnborough Down and along the track to the A338. On the descent we had four deer running along side for about a 1/2km - quite a treat.

On reaching the A338 we crossed and attempted to navigate the bridleway down to Fawley. Unfortunately this even more overgrown since the last time I tried it a few years ago, and we resorted to pushing our bikes down the adjacent field boundary. It's a shame, as it'd be a great little track were it not for the 350m of overgrowth.

From Fawley we worked our way back to the Ridgeway along the bridleway where we had to contend with rain clouds and smoke clouds from nearby stubble burning. It only rained a few spots, and the smoke didn't blow over the track too much, so we avoided getting lung fulls of smoke. Then it was down Castle Hill into Letcombe Regis, then back to Grove via Wantage.

A brisk breeze on the way out to Denchworth turned into a pleasant tailwind as we headed in a more north-easterly direction en route to Fyfield. We stopped by the gates of Fyfield Manor for a breather and were approached by a dog-walking local who asked whether we were interested in buying the estate! It has been on the market for over £5.5M for over a year apparently - an unusual talking point for an evening ride.
We had seen the showers around us on the way out. On turning westwards at Netherton it was immediately clear that we were unlikely to escape. We felt the first rain drops approaching the A415 crossing, but fortunately the ridge road (as I call it) has some good tree cover. We stopped for about 5 minutes under the trees to let the worst of the rain pass. However, the sun never stopped shining and there was soon a fine rainbow behind us.
As we continued in the late evening sunshine, we could see the showers scurrying eastwards and the rainbow remained clearly visible for most of our ride back to Grove. Back at 8:15.
An enjoyable outing for me with the 2-star group, thanks erveryone for your company.

With heavy rain as the time for the ride approached, I had high expectations of a low turnout. I was wrong, a big group left Old Mill Hall, although Ken turned back very quickly with a puncture. Having wended our way through Wantage and 2 sets of temporary traffic lights we reached Chain Hill at which point it was every rider for themselves. We regrouped at the top of Chain Hill, the stiff head wind ensured nobody broke any records but the views were spectacular and it was well worth the effort.

Dave had chain issues on the way to West Ilsley but Andy and Hugo kept him company whilst he sorted it. Another couple of hills and we were in Brightwalton. The rain came, not overly heavy despite the threatening clouds and when we reached the main road back to Wantage we had time to admire the rainbow. We regrouped at the Market Square before a spirited ride back to Grove.

A very pleasant group ride, Andy P did another sterling job as sweep and we were back for sunset. Welcome to John Owen, joining for his first ride with the club.

Easy Saturday afternoon ride - the Downs on our doorstep 1*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
2:00 pm
Start Location:
Leckhampstead village hall
Description:
Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.

There is some lovely cycling to be enjoyed on the Downs above Wantage, with some quiet lanes, stunning views and picturesque villages to enjoy. So for a change this month, the plan is to start and finish on the Downs with a tea stop at the excellent Saddleback Farm shop café near Farnborough. This will be a slightly hillier than usual 1* ride, but all taken at a leisurely pace with no rush and plenty of time to take in our surroundings.

Meet at the village hall car park in Leckhampstead (RG20 8QJ, GR 439763) opposite The Stag PH (small donation requested). The ride will follow a clockwise route visiting the villages of Chaddleworth, Brightwalton, Farnborough and Peasmore with a short detour to see a CTC-winged wheel. A total distance of about 16 miles.

For those 2* and 3* riders who would like to get in some hill-climbing, before joining the ride, I will be cycling out and up from Wantage at about 1pm . Please let me know beforehand if you would like to join me.

An unusual 1* ride, in that a majority of the riders rode to the start, Simon and David joining me to tackle Chain Hill, Brian doing so independently, while Ursula, David and Chris rode up from the South.

There was a surprisingly brisk westerly breeze as we headed south. After a gentle descent we stopped by Bradleywood farm to view the CTC winged wheel above the door (bought by the owner, a CTC member, at an auction many years ago).

The wind was in our faces as we climbed up the Nodmore valley and turned north towards Chaddleworth. We continued to climb through the village before stopping for a well-earned rest near the church.

Continuing on to Brightwalton, the views across the Downs started to open out. Here Barbara and Ellie decided to take the short-cut to the tea stop, while the remainder of us dropped down to Woolley and then climbed steadily up to the B4494 and across to Farnborough before dropping down the hill to the café.

Edith and Lorna joined us for tea. Ellie and Barbara disappeared into the maize maze eventually emerging separately at completely different places...

After a nice downhill to Lilley, the biggest climb of the day lay in wait en route to Peasmore, thereafter the ride was very mellow. After one final short climb, we made it back to Leckhampstead by 4:45pm.

Thanks to David S for sweeping and congratulations to Ellie on completing her hilliest ride and cycling up all of the hills.

A grey and rainy start, but it didn't last long and the skies cleared to reveal a perfect evening. A rather nasty close shave with an idiot driver on the way through Wantage, but otherwise the route went according to plan. A certain variation in fitness levels revealed itself on the hills - everyone else was fit and, after nearly a month away on holiday, I wasn't. Fortunately everyone was kind and patient and it all worked out!

Good to shoot down Chain Hill realising that the Tour of Britain will be coming that way in just a few weeks.

Start Time:

Start Location:

Description:
A mix of a little climbing, some nice descents, flat riding in the Vale and some easy off-road this week with some options to shorten if weather deteriorates...

We'll head out through Charlton to Lockinge and take a short-cut through to Ardington with a nice long descent into the village. Then we'll climb up to the Lains Barn cross-roads and enjoy the longer drop down into the Vale. When we reach the A338 there will be an option to cut the ride short, by heading straight back into Grove (8 miles total) or taking the A338 and looping back via the Hanneys (14 miles total). If it's dry , we can use the delightful track across to Denchworth from West Hanney.

Report:
Despite the big black cloud hanging over the vale, there were 5 takers for the 1* ride. The rain eventually arrived as we were mustering in the car park, but it was relatively gentle, and after delaying the start to allow most of the shower to pass, we headed towards Wantage and the only patch of blue in the sky.

While we caught our breath at the start of Sustrans Route 544, another arm of the shower caught up with us, but after a few minutes of gentle wet it cleared, the sun came out and it turned into a glorious evening.

Enjoying the evening sunshine, we chose the extended on-road option, resting only briefly in West Hanney on the way back. The sun was setting as we crossed the railway bridge and returned to Grove, a reminder of how quickly the days shorten at this time of year.

Back at 8:15 after a most enjoyable ride.

Start Time:

Start Location:

Description:
This is a re-run of last year's special route into the centre of Oxford. Nice, easy pace through Charney Bassett, Appleton and Cumnor, down the hill to Botley. Then the cunning car-free entry to Oxford via bike tracks and beautiful river sides (suitable for all bikes). Private venue tea stop courtesy of St Aldates church in the very heart of the city, opposite Christchurch (with catering from perhaps the best coffee shop in town - Cafe Loco). Then along the river path to Iffley, Kennington and back via Sunningwell and Fyfield. 40 miles - a longer 2* ride, but easy terrain and an easy pace. Don't miss this one!

A good group and the promise of pleasant weather. Well, that worked well until the tea stop. Then the heavens opened rathe unexpectedly for 10 minutes or so - but, we were inside the lovely St Aldates church so we didn't really mind.

All went largely according to plan. The off road section along the towpath and up into Kennington was a bit soggier than scheduled, but everyone coped well and we had no punctures. This is a long distance for a Saturday 2* ride so congratulations to everyone for an excellent effort.

Thanks for your fun company!

Description:
Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know.

Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any 2. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride.

A pleasant evening, though is had been raining earlier.

We started up Crab Hill (not too bad at present) and then Lark Hill (puddles). Then across to Manor Road A338 and up the big hill on that, turning right when we hit the Ridgeway.

The earlier made the Sparsholt Field descent a bit more exciting than usual, and we took it a bit slower at first. I was grabbed by an overhanging plant on the way down - managed to stay up though!

And it was a very keen ride from there to the pub!

Description:
1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph).

Keeping with the hills theme that seems to have developed with evening 3* rides, I thought we'd pop up Hackpen Hill on our way to Uffington. That is, pop up in terms of most of you then waiting for me at the top 😉.

We'll finish up at the Fox at Denchworth (it's club night) via Baulking and Goosey. For those not stopping at the pub, the return route from Denchworth is straightforward.

A good turnout, despite the threatening black clouds and the showers on and off all day.

The views coming down from Hackpen Hill were well worth the climb. We passed through a couple of areas of what appeared to be recent heavy showers and encountered a strong head wind on the Baulking road. Calum kindly took spells at the front, spelled himself by Olivia for a while too.

Thanks to David for sweeping. All in all another pleasant Tuesday evening club ride, rounded off at the pub!

Description:
A trip to the Letcombes this week and an opportunity to climb Holborn Hill. It's the steepest hill that we cover on 1* Tuesday rides, but there is no rush and plenty of time to enjoy the views from the top. Route details:-

we will take it very gently to Letcombe Bassett via Wantage / Letcombe Regis footpath so we are all 'fit & able' to climb Holborn Hill as we leave Letcombe Bassett. But soon there is a nice long downhill section to Childrey. Then the footpath to West Challow. Back to Grove via Denchworth.

Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride.

We'll aim to be back in Grove before dusk but ,with the nights drawing in, lights may be necessary for cycling home particularly if over-caste.

Around 11 miles.

Round the Isle of Wight 3*
Leader:
John Talbot
Start Time:
8:00 am
Start Location:
Lymington Pier
Description:
Now in it's 5th year this classic CTC Wantage ride will use the patented John Talbot's "Isle of Wight - Ultimate Route" in 2014. This route is a combination of the End-to-End and Round the Isle routes. Taking the best of both and cutting out the most unpleasant sections of the Round the Isle route (especially near Ryde and Wootton Bridge).

See last year's ride report for photos of the ride.

We will catch the 08:40 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (£13.80, tickets bought before sailing), bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 30 minutes. We will be avoiding the Bestival weekend again this year.

There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (£6.00 for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines.

You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding. We will car share as much as possible.

There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes) but there is a café at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast!

The route will take in the Needles for breathtaking views across the Solent, stunning coastal roads, quaint inland villages, seaside resorts, bustling sea ports, ancient ruins and buildings. Pretty much everything this magnificent island has to offer!

We'll stop at the Old World Tea Rooms in Godshill for a late morning cuppa/comfort break. Lunch stop will be at the CTC Affiliated Toll Gate Café near Bembridge.

We'll aim to stop for afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes. But if we are seriously delayed we will take refreshments on the return ferry (probably the 17:05 or 17:40).

The route is undulating with few flat sections and several stiff climbs but is very scenic. Distance is 109km (68 miles) with 1,390m (4,500 feet) of climbing.

We will cycle at touring pace averaging around 18-20kph (11-12.5mph). Expect around 5.5 to 6hrs of actual cycling time and bring/wear clothing appropriate for the weather forecast.

Please let me know beforehand if you are coming on the ride so I can tick you off at Lymington.

Report:
Twelve riders gathered in the light drizzle at Lymington Pier awaiting the 8.40am ferry. Quite a few IoW virgins too! By the time we had voyaged across the solent the Sun was shining and gilets, arm warmers and jackets were quickly dispensed with as we cycled to the Needles.

We spent some time exploring the rocket launching pads, enjoying the views and soaking in the rays before descending to Freshwater Bay. The glorious views along the Military Road helped by magnificent atmospheric clarity followed before we turned inland along narrow lanes towards Godshill.

A relaxing twelvsies was enjoyed in the sunshine in the garden, some having early cream teas, some brunch, others just a drink. After a decent break and natter we resumed towards Bembridge.

A change in the route for 2014 took us into Sandown and the impatient motorists on the seafront. It's swings and roundabouts, another view of the sea or the climb on the busy Marshcombe Shute?

We completed end to end at Bembridge after a short excursion on a gravel road (sorry!) before lunch at the eccentric Toll Gate Café. Pro-active water bottle filling indicative of the welcome they give to cyclists.

By now the sunshine had disappeared and the sky had gone milky but it was still warm enough. We used the 2013 route out of Bembridge which involves a short distance on a busier A-road but avoids some of the hills. We negotiated the rolling terrain towards Wootton Bridge, regathering where possible.

A slight confusion ensued as I'd forgotten I'd altered the route to use the back streets and avoid the always maniacally busy main road and traffic light junction through Wootton Bridge. But we got where we needed to be in the end!

It's a short quiet run in to Cowes where we had to wait for the chain ferry. For a change (and to avoid the pointless up and down and up and down again to avoid the town centre) we walked through the town which is one way against counter-clockwise cyclists.

Our usual ice-cream booth had closed for the day so we continued to Gurnard where the café and window were still open. We enjoyed our ice creams and drinks watching the huge cruise ships leaving Southampton on the high tide and a group of people doing the ice bucket challenge on the beach. We suggested to Rachel that she might like to do hers at the same time, but cycling back to Yarmouth in wet clothes didn't appeal for some reason :)

The run in to Yarmouth is quiet and rural, it's also always the quietest part of the ride in the group as there's less chatting amongst the riders with different levels of fatigue. It's a fairly easy run in though after the earlier exertions. The cloud had thickened during the afternoon and a very few light spots of rain were felt occasionally but once again this ride has been blessed and lucky with good weather.

Although the average speed and cycling time were very similar to previous years, a slightly later morning ferry, larger group, longer breaks, sightseeing and waiting at Cowes meant we arrived at Yarmouth later than usual at 6.30pm to board the 7.10pm ferry back to Lymington.

A great day out, relaxed and chilled cycling with great scenery. The island is welcoming to cyclists where the New Forest seems determined not to be.

Thanks to everyone for coming and a huge thanks to everyone who took a turn sweeping during the ride, I always say this but sweeping is a huge benefit to the leader who is able to relax a bit more and enjoy the ride more themselves.

Description:
A cheeky little route of 62 km, lots of bailout opportunities and distinct climbs on the first half and undulations on the second part, stopping at the Crofton Pumping Station for tea after 40 km. 2* pace, 3* "scenery". 4 hours-ish of riding time, back to Hungerford by 18:00.

Start 13:00 at Hungerford Town Hall. Best free parking at Hungerford Station.

Windmills, steam engines, Leverton cottages, climbs, descents - all we'll need is the weather.

Please let Chris know by text if you intend to join the ride - it will be cancelled if there are no riders committed by 20:00 on 29th August.

A rather pleasant afternoon! As the ride was designated an Explorer ride, I thought the right thing to do was to use some new lanes and some old favourites to show off the area south of Hungerford. Some good climbs followed including the mean one at Rivar, and Conholt Hill.

The rewards of the Chute Causeway were short-lived as Jon's tyre exploded, whereupon the well-practised pit-stop routine swung into action with Des producing a spare tyre, Chris getting his hands dirty and Richard performing the quick CO2 inflation. Jon watched on, bemused.

Tea at the delightful Crofton Pumping Station was a delight, including seconds for a few people, and then we headed up towards Savernake Forest before swinging down into Froxfield and the up and over to Chilton Foliat, finally coming through the Denfords and across Hungerford Common.

Big thanks to Richard for sweeping the ride.
