3* Saturday Brunch Special | 3* |
---|
Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:7:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Something a little different.Making the most of the summer daylight we will start the ride early at 7.00am to (hopefully) take advantage of some quieter roads. A relatively flat ride with the only significant hill being the climb up past Farmoor to Cumnor. The plan is then to reward ourselves with brunch (estimated about 9.45am) at The Bear and Ragged Staff. https://www.bearandraggedstaff.com/menu/#breakfast We will then head directly back to Grove with the bulk of the day still ahead. As I will need to book a table please can you confirm whether you want to join the ride by 30 June. |
||
Report:Well the experimental early start seemed to pay off. We had the best of the weather and quieter roads. Not to mention an excellent (and generously portioned) breakfast at Cumnor. The consensus seemed to be that a brunch ride was worth putting on from time to time. Katherine unfortunately had to leave us after breakfast but Andy joined us instead. Bit of a brutal headwind on the way back - so thanks to the group for rotating the lead. Thanks all for trying something new. | ||

A thankfully incident free ride, despite my alleged attempt to take out Karl (again).Fines were awarded for passing the ride leader at a tariff of 50p per transgression - both Karl and Barry were on £1.50 each but the aforementioned manoeuvre on Karl caused me to cancel his fine and it didn't seem fair to just charge Barry! Report:It was perfect weather for cycling but it was not a good start as the car drivers had to park at the shops as there were no spaces at OMH. We set off at a brisk pace via Denchworth, Asti Stud, Charney, across the A420, Longworth and finally coffee at Appleton. Two nice ladies were just leaving and gave up the picnic table to us as seating is very limited outside the community shop. We were joined by the 1* group after a few minutes so we all had a good chat about Boris! My 2* group left first taking a route through Fyfield Wick and down the old road to Southmoor. Unfortunately the farmer had locked a gate further down the route but we managed to climb over and lift the bikes over (team work!) The Southmoor to Hanney road was good with the wind behind us. Then we returned to Grove via Denchworth. A very good ride with good company. Thank you Des | ||

Oxfordshire Triennial Veterans' Century Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Islip Village Hall OX5 2TA |
Description:This year's Oxfordshire Century Ride will form one of a series of Triennial Veterans' Rides (or Tri-vets) taking place across the country in June and July. The Tri-vets rides date back to the CTC's golden jubilee year of 1928 and are aimed at riders over the age of 50. As ours is also our regular Annual Century ride, you don’t have to be over 50 to ride. The ride will start from Islip Village Hall, but please park at Islip railway station, 400m from the hall, if coming by car. The route covers almost the length of the county reaching from almost Banbury to beyond Faringdon. Arrive at least 20 minutes before the 8am ride start. Stops will be at: 25 miles – Coffee: Cotefield Nurseries, Bodicote 50 miles – Lunch: Charlbury (formerly Ramsden) Garden Centre (probably from a reduced menu for quick service) 75 miles – Tea-time: The Horse and Jockey pub, Stanford-in-the-Vale Riders will pay for refreshments individually, as on a regular club ride, and we will not have a fee for the event. We will need to limit numbers to 36 (3 groups of 12) on a first-come first-served basis. Please register through the link below. One of the groups will be slightly slower than the others as an ideal ‘gentle Century’ taking up to 12 hours for the full event, one will be slightly faster but still ‘touring pace’ not ‘sporty pace’, and one will be a ‘happy medium’. If you book and find out you can not come, please tell us. >>> Register on this link <<< The route from three years ago will give you an idea of the route but look out for an update closer to the day. |

Riders:Andy PixtonHugo Pile John Tranter Julian Gough Katherine Boyce Martin Casey Nigel Hughes Pauline Casey Peter Hallowell Robin Tucker Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Riders = 12 Report:A glorious century on a lovely warm day. Temperatures rose high, and we even experienced a little melting tarmac, but never got so hot that we were really suffering. The first leg from Islip to Bodicote near Banbury was fairly striaghtforward, some great roads to start and a bit busier to end. The garden centre was well prepared for us. The second leg started with an interesting trip through the houses, but was soon on very quiet roads. Closing in on Ramsbury we encountered many Alfa Romeo cars whose drivers and co-pilots appeared to be on some form of treasure hunt. More traffic than usual, but very friendly. Charlbury Garden Centre did a great job for us, being well prepared with our pre-ordered lunches. The third stint of riding was very enjoyable. We encountered a cycling road race just after Bamford. There was a long stretch of the A4095 towards Faringdon in the heat of the day, but the traffic was light and we were in a rhythm, so we just kept going. Getting to Faringdon, we found ourselves in the middle of their 'Follyfest' and took a picture with the giant inflatable pink pigeon of the Farcycles group. The Horse and Jockey at Stanford in the Vale was well set up for drinks of any kind, but there was confusion over the cake (which was set out in small slices, but it was not clear that it was £2 a slice - fair, but not clear). They sold less than they could I think, and I think we'll talk to them about a better way next time. The ride from there was more pleasant countryside - the section from Hinton Waldrist to Cumnor I always enjoy (prevailing Westerlies may have something to do with this), and I like the 'cheek' of the hidden cycle track just before the A34 flyover and the 'hole in the hedge' that gets you from the A420/A34 roundabout to the quiet Wytham road. Once we'd navigated Oxford, it was a short stretch back to Islip where each group celebrated in turn, and certificates were handed out to the centurions. 25 started the ride, and one cut short at half way, so 24 completed the 100 miles. (Actually 101). | ||

We promised ourselves we would all take the hills and our own pace - not push it too much - and look forward to the downhills. We also thought we could cut if short if need be .The first third of the ride was particularly hilly and very hard work - but the temperatures then dropped and so it got a bit easier. So we carried on with the planned route. We split into two groups of 5 so thanks to Jane for leading the second group. Isle Of Wight Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:7:45 am |
Start Location:Lymington Pier |
Description:THIS RIDE IS NOW FULL. PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU WISH TO GO ON A WAITING LISTAfter a break of a couple of years, the IoW club special returns - with changes! Although this is over a 110km riding with just shy of 1300m of climbing, done at the right pace, this is an accessible ride for anyone with underlying fitness, that takes in the best of the Isle of Wight. Glorious views, swooping hills and a ferry ride at Cowes (1 pound), what more could you ask for We will catch the 08:15 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (19.40 pounds for adults and 14.40 pounds for 60+) tickets can be bought online in advance or at the ticket office before sailing. Bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 40 minutes. There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (9 pounds for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines or alternatively you can use Ringgo to pay for your ticket, see here: http://www.wightlink.co.uk/go/isle-of-wight-ferry-routes-destinations/lymington-yarmouth-ferry/. You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding, even if you have bought your ticket in advance (which is advised). Boarding commences 15 minutes before sailing. We will car share as much as possible. There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes, toast) but there is a café at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast! Depending on the wishes of the group, there will be an option to visit the Needles not long after we disembark in Yarmouth. Our previous lunch stop in Bembridge has gone up-market and instead we will take the opportunity to check out the Red Squirrel Trail from Shanklin to Wroxall and stop for lunch in Sandown at just under half way. We'll aim to stop for an afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes dependant on the time. Return ferry will either be the 16:05, 17:05 or 18:05 from Yarmouth. |

Riders:Andy PixtonChris Bailey David Smith Eddie Little Jo Little John Tranter Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Lizzie Hardingham Sharon Bedford Stephanie Haddrell Ursula Hallam Riders = 12 Weather:Report:To say the Island was stunning the day of our ride is an understatement. The views were astounding, particularly from the Needles which we returned to after many years. All agreed this needed to be part of future routes. We discovered a National Trust mobile catering van far too early but all enjoyed the treats. The small lanes continued to delight as in previous years. WE diverted to Godshill for food and discovered a delightful vegan restaurant tucked away that was excellent value and nobody complained at the lack of meatThe addition of riding the Esplanade between Shanklin and Sandown was fab on such a hot, sunny day (note for next years briefing: don't be tempted to cycle on any sand!). The changes to the route after Bembridge were nice but definitely not as nice as in previous years so if we visit the IoW next year, won't be included. The heat, sun and unrelenting hills took their toll and extended our day accordingly and we glimpsed a departing ferry as we approached the port. However the wait for the next one allowed at least one member of the group to run (in cleats) for a magnum before the shop shut . Thanks Andy for a fantastic job of sweeping and to everyone for being so good natured All in all a great day out! | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:HEATWAVE UPDATE 18 July - due to the hot temperatures forecast through to Tuesday evening, I propose a change of route to reduce the amount of climbing and distance (if we so choose). Instead of riding out to the Letcombes, we can head to Childrey via Denchworth and the metalled bridleway from West Challow. We can then decide on returning via either Goosey or Wantage. Please bring plenty to drink. Please let me know if you would still like to ride.A ride out to the Letcombes this evening with a few ups and downs and the hardest hill we do on 1* on a Tuesday Evening - Holborn Hill on the west side of Letcombe Bassett. Once we've caught our breath and enjoyed the view at the top, we can enjoy a lovely descent to Childrey and then more gently all the way down to Challow Station. After a short stretch of the A417, we return to Grove via Goosey and Denchworth a round trip of about 14 miles. This is a bridging ride at the upper end of 1* for those who would like to try an easier 2* ride next week. Please let me know by text if you are thinking of coming. Report:What started as a ride in sticky heat under overcast skies turned into a much more pleasant affair as a cold front moving through brought a refreshing southerly breeze, a nice drop in temperature and patchy sunshine.Despite the lingering heat of the hottest day of the year, 5 of us were up for a ride, and lovely to be joined by Mila as we left the car park. I had already changed the route to reduce the amount of climbing but a further change was required when a passing motorist informed us of an accident at the Circourt Road-A417 junction. We had stopped at the top of the railway bridge to admire the view and were looking back at the dark skies further east. Were those a few rain drops? The decision was taken to partially retrace our steps to Goosey and then make a loop around the Vale. At Goosey, we headed over to the church in the corner of the green and were delighted to find the door open. The lady cleaning was very happy for us to come in to the cool and look around. Later as we approached Charney Bassett, the wind picked up and rain started to fall. After the briefest of showers, the sun came out and we could see a faint rainbow. From Lyford back to Denchworth the cooling breeze was in our faces making for harder work, but in very pleasant evening sunshine. Back in Grove at 8:15pm, we were all pleased to have ventured out. Thanks to all for your company. | ||

Report:A lovely evening although still rather hot for the planned route. We headed out to the Letcombes as planned, taking our time at a rather more sedate 2 star pace. There were several options to shorten the ride and we all felt that to do the full planned route would be too much. At Childrey we reviewed the situation and decided that the flat route back to Denchworth via Goosey woudl be a good option with a stop for rehydration at the Fox. Once we had crossed over the A417 at Shellingford the road surface was much better & the humidity vanished leaving us with a cooler head wind for our return leg home. A nice group to lead! Riders:Barry EggbyBarry Stanton David Jackson Des Higgs Gerry Jones Joanna Houlston Karl Blake LeeAnn Norris Roger Postbeschild Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 10 Weather:Report:10 riders gathered at Aston Pottery to be suitably refreshed before setting off. Jo managed a slight incident before setting off whilst attempting to admire the flowers - no harm done and dusted herself off!Barry E had his first failed attempt to pay cash - Aston Pottery is card only! The journey to Burford Garden Centre was incident free and the food, whilst not cheap, was good, with the cakes coming in for particular praise. Water and ice to top up bidons was particularly welcome. Barry E once again failed to use cash! On leaving lunch, we received a very light sprinkling of rain, unexpected but not unpleasant and short lived. Cloud cover kept the temperature to a reasonable level for cycling. The ride along both sides of the Windush valley is not without undulations but Cogges Manor Farm was soon reached for afternoon refreshments. The ride back to Aston is pretty flat where more refreshments were taken (see a theme here). Most then returned by car or motorhome, Karl and Barry S rode back home. Apart from LeeAnn having a loose mudguard we had no mechanicals and the group was great company. | ||

Slight amendment to the designated route - namely we went the opposite way round, so, after the obligatory pause at the Walnut tree in Denchworth, we curled via Charney Bassett, and then East before dropping down to West Hanney.Billed as pub night, the usual Denchworth watering hole was closed (oh no), so great suggestion made by Steve S to stop for a drink at the Plough in West Hanney - hence the above adjustment to time it right.... After being suitably refreshed at the pub, sitting in the garden as the weather was wonderful, we ambled back round to Grove. Thanks everyone for your company! | ||

Cotswold Explorer | 3* |
---|
Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:8:30 am |
Start Location:Burford Car Park |
Description:Welcome to the latest 5th Saturday away-day ride. The plan is to go exploring through some of the prettiest (and remote) parts of the Cotswolds, north-west of Burford. There will be a coffee stop after about 30km in Bourton-on-the-Water, and lunch will be near Stow-on-the-Wold after about 70km. The total distance will be 105km with 1150m of climbing. We will meet at the car park in Burford, with the aim to start the ride at 0830. Apparently it is easily found by taking the turning by Mrs Bumbles and following the road around past the Church, but be cautious as you enter - there is only enough width for a car coming in or out of the car park. There are toilets here, and being that early there should be plenty of space even in July. I am happy to ride this with up to 11 others - please email me on pethybridgera@yahoo.co.uk or message on 07875 456521 to book a place. |

Riders:Andy PixtonJo Little John Tranter Katherine Boyce Richard Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Well, what a great ride this turned out to be. Parking was simple and everyone was early, so we got away in good time. The weather was a bit greyer than would have been preferred, but that did mean it was also cooler, so not all bad. The first third of the day was very uppy-downy, out through the Barringtons before climbing up to Great Rissington. That was followed by a descent to Sherborne before looping back up for a very welcome coffee stop in Bourton-on-the-water. After some obligatory photos we headed north and north west almost as far as Snowshill (although without the descent to that village which would have been anti-social). We did get to see the Cotswold Lavender Farm though, which at just over 1000ft was the high point of the ride. Lunch was enjoyed at the rather excellent Golden Ball pub in Lower Swell, before a steep climb up to Stow-on-the-Wold began the afternoon's delights. We passed Dalesford Farm as Boris Johnson was enjoying his nuptials courtesy of another rich friend, and although it started raining at that point unfortunately the shower was brief and light. The ride finished with a lovely descent down to Asthall before a short meander back along to the start at Burford. The climb, at nearly 1500m, was more than predicted but the group coped admirably well and a great day out was had by all. Thanks to everyone for making it so much fun, and to Andy for being an excellent sweep throughout. | ||
