Saturday afternoon ride 3* | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A 55km (34 mile) hilly leg-stretcher. Starts easy, out from Grove to Goosey, Baulking and Uffington. Then we do the White Horse loop (why? It's like a magnet...) followed by Court Hill and across the backroads to Farnborough for the great descent of Chain Hill. Tea stop in Wantage at the end. Route is here: www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=21470 |
||
Report:After a perfect sunny week, we unfortunately got the grey clouds and the gale force winds today. Which might have influenced the numbers - we went for quality rather than quantity on this one! All went according to plan, although a few exposed sections had us wondering if the side wind would take us into the nearest field. | ||

Riders:Mavis RoseNeil Warner Pat Hurt Riders = 3 Report:A pleasant, if a little chilly when stood still,day. Brompton World Champs with Bridget Hickman in the field, 20k TT with Jan McCabe posting a good time on a technical course. Picnic was a good idea as although the burger wagons were less in number this year the available refreshments struggled with the numbers, The Italian Coffee Co. ran out of tea at about 2:20!! much to Mavis's chagrin as she had patiently queued for about 20 minutes. Next to nothing for the veggies again. Met up with members of Oxford City and West Oxon a very pleasant afternoon. | ||

Saturday 2* ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:David Bridge |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:GroveDenchworth Hanney Steventon Sutton Courtney Appleford Didcot (via cycleway) Hagbourne Chilton (Tea at Garden Centre) Rowstock W Hendred Ginge Lockinge Grove. 55Km Route here: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=88883 Note that there is the cycleway before Didcot (which I plan to take) and the short cut by Harwell (which don't but some might) which those with racing bikes might prefer to avoid. |
||
Report:We left while it was still raining but it stopped when we got to Drayton and, apart from a couple of minor showers, stayed reasonanbly pleasant. John Talbot joined us in Sutton Courtney and helped us navigate the Didcot maze. We actually went through East Hagbourne.to get to West Hagbourne. For the benefit of future trips the climb over the hump to get to Chilton is quite steep, 2 riders had to push. Chilton Garden centre cafe was fine. Michael left us at Rowstock corner. The remaining hills on the trip seemed easy after the Chilton humpDistance was about 34 miles. Average speed about 12mph. Time about 3hrs I think we probably did as much climbing and went as fast as could be expected of a 2* ride. I can supply a gpx file of the route we followed if anyone wants it. | ||
