10 Mile Club 1* | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise.We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. Newcomers and returnees to cycling, and accompanied children very welcome. Tonight will be a flat ride in the Vale visiting Lyford and Charney Bassett - a round trip of about 11 miles. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. |
||
Report:A select group on the 1* this evening. Susan was enjoying riding her new bike. We followed the route as planned through Denchworth to Lyford, left at the T then right towards Southmoor and on over the Ock bridge before turning left at the next cross-roads back towards Charney Bassett. Despite the threatening skies it remained dry, but it was cool and not an evening for long stops.We rode at a slightly higher pace than a usual 1* and as everyone was enjoying it, we took in the Goosey/Asti stud loop en route to the pub. While Susan carried on home, the rest of us settled into the comfy chairs in the bar and waited for the other groups... a good sociable pub night followed. | ||

Description:A nice straightforward loop around the Vale this evening. Out through Denchworth and Charney Bassett, across to Pusey, then the gloriously named Hinton Waldrist, along to beautiful Fyfield and back to the Fox at Denchworth in good time for optional restorative isotonic drinks.About 20 miles, and a nice easy average speed of 12-13 mph. |

This is what the Club is all about - getting people on their bikes enjoying the countryside and the company and then finding that they get fitter and better at it!The weather was pretty threatening at the start, but the rain just about held off and we coped OK with a niggling headwind on the final leg. We heard all about the unexpected connection between Hinton Waldrist and rock guitarist Brian May and took a slight short cut in order to take in the footbridge over the A420 at Southmoor. Otherwise, all went according to plan and a good time was had by all! | ||

A super fast descent to Sparsholt before the undulating road to the foot of the Dragon. Most of us tamed the beast in the headwind but it was too cool to hang around long at the top and we descended to Uffington. A stonking tailwind blew us along at a blistering pace to Baulking and beyond, a really good blast with great group riding. We eased off and warmed down through Goosey and Denchworth and to the pub for a drink and a natter. Really good ride tonight. Thanks for coming along | ||

Thanks to Mavis and James we had a good selection of raffle prizes. Matthew (with help from Steve) did a great job in selling tickets and £41.31 was raised for Whizz-kidz. Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:I feel it's about time we did some hills. So - through Wantage to Letcombe Regis and up Court Hill. A bit of the A338 before the up and down across from Fawler to Brightwalton. Down the other side to Boxford, before the notorious climb of the dreaded Winterbourne Alp (which, frankly, sounds worse than it is, really...). A possible refuelling stop at the village shop in Chieveley, followed by the gradual climb to the slightly worryingly named World's End and Beedon. Then the reasonably challenging roller coaster across to Farnborough before the swooping descent of Chain Hill into Wantage and home. Note how the careful use of language makes things sound better... About 40 miles, and we'll aim at an average speed of 13 mph. |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonBarry Gills Bryan Charleston Chris Walters David Bridge David Smith Des Higgs Janet Charleston John Tranter Katherine Boyce Linda Wright Louis Hall Mark Austin Nicole Pethybridge Stephen Quartermain Ursula Hallam Riders = 16 Weather:Report:Amazingly lovely weather - cloudless sunshine and hardly any wind. Our biggest problem was probably going to be heat stroke!A really big group set off and kept together well. A big welcome to Linda, riding with us for the first time. The only problem with the ride was a succession of punctures - three in total, including one for Linda! I can't remember the last time that happened on a Club ride, and you would normally associate it with the depths of winter, not a lovely summer day. Oh well, lots of expert assistance was on hand and they were all dealt with promptly. Your leader messed up by letting the backmarkers get out of sight, resulting in them missing a turn and having to retrace steps - apologies to those involved. Otherwise, some tough terrain, good company and a fun ride. | ||

Wallingford Cycle Ride and Picnic | 1* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Wallingford Market Place |
Description:This ride will be more gentle and spread out than usual, as we follow the Benson Veteran Cycle Club rally. The main route is about 20 miles as described below. This is likely to be more ad hoc and flexible than normal rides, so I'll check with people first how they'd best like to spend the day.IMPORTANT: Please bring a picnic, plenty to drink, and sunscreen! We will set off from Wallingford Market Place at 9:30am and ride 3 miles to Benson to arrive at the Sunnyside playing fields just before the 10am start of the rally. The rally is an impressive collection of pre-1928 cycles in working condition, and in this case actually working! Once the rally is under way, we can follow it in small groups and chat with each other and the rally riders. The route is well signed and marshalled, and I'll bring some maps to share around so no one gets lost. The rally heads towards Ewelme, then at the start of the village turns right and up to the air base. It bends left and tunrs left back down to Ewelme. The first rally stop - for beer - is here, and I'm told we will be welcome to partake. We then head north past the Shepherd's Hut pub, via Cottesmore Lane, to Chalgrove. At one of the pubs here is the lunch stop for the rally. However as there will be 100+ riders queuing for food and ale, we will break out our own picnics here. After our picnic, we'll head back towards Benson, via Berrick Salome. The rally riders gather again at the playing fields for prizes, the buying and selling of old bike bits, etc. I'll guide people back to Wallingford as and when you wish to go - probably around 3pm. If you prefer a longer ride linked to this, I will bring maps and will help out with any routing or technical issues. The 'Chiltern Hills' leaflet on the Wallingford website is a good place to start. |
||
Report:A wonderful day for a different kind of ride. We set off to Benson to follow the Benson Veteran Cycle Club rally on its gentle meandering through the Southeast Oxfordshire countryside - and we weren't disappointed.6 of us set off on 5 bikes. The tandemists were Richard and Louise from Stoke Row. Also John, Patrick, Alice, and me. An easy 3 miles to Benson and the Rally started riding at 1030, not 1000 so we had plenty of time. It took about half an hour for them all 150 or so to get off, then we followed them on. Up past the airbase we past several – not surprising given the lack of gears and surfeit of weight on many of the old bikes. Then it was back down into Ewelme where we stopped for a beer (or juice) and chat with the veterans. After a good long stop we went on another 5 miles to Chalgrove, again riding with and chatting with veteran riders along the way. The main traffic on this section was a veteran car rally coming the other way! We next stopped at Chalgrove, Richard and Louise had to head for home at this point. We sat on on the Lamb pub lawn with our picnics, and the sun shone, and the band played! (The Roke and Benson brass band). We had a leisurely lunch before the final section, setting off in the middle of the veterans just before 2pm. Fairly soon we were back in Benson. There Alice was offered a ride on a penny-farthing (or as I believe it should be called an 'Ordinary'. She jumped at the change and was soon helped up and managed to stay up for a reasonable number of tens of yards (I like metric, but metres would be the wrong units for this!) Once most of the riders were back in, we set back off for Wallingford. Alice and John peeled off in Crowmarsh and Patrick and I completed the full, not very strenuous 20 miles. Last week I rode 200 miles in 24 hours and a bigger contrast would be hard to imagine. But it was all enjoyable, and that really shows the glorious diversity of cycling! | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Long, hilly, quick - or any combination! - 35-45kmThere is a lovely hill going south out of Wantage that I thought we might tackle: Chain Hill. For those not familiar with it, it comprises four ascents with gentle breathers in-between. We will then turn right at Farnborough Copse, go past Nine Acre Wood and right again to join the road back to Wantage. We will go on The Up before the Down and what a down: Court Hill to Letcombe. We will take in one last hill, Holborn Hill, then we will weave into the flat open spaces of the Vale as we loop back to Grove. |

The views were breathtaking with warm summer airs around us. As we descended towards Nine Acre Wood - a puncture. Then, shortly after Nine Acre Wood, another puncture! "Press on", said Andy, so we dropped two riders. "Meet up at the bottom of Court Hill", I said. Obviously not loudly enough and another enthusiast raced off on his own. A couple left us at this point too. At the top of Holborn Hill several riders decided to ride on through Childrey and Denchworth as originally planned, while the remainder of us took the B4507 back to Grove. A couple departed for home. In all, of the sixteen who started out at 6:30, five made it back together by 8:30! An attritional ride. | ||

Please contact Chris if you intend to come - the ride will not run without support. |
||
Riders:Andy NewellBarry Gills Bryan Charleston Chris Walters David Bridge Janet Charleston John Talbot Louis Hall Lyn Taylor Richard Preece Riders = 10 Weather:Report:The day started by crossing the 20 celsius point before 08:00, and it got hotter and hotter. We missed Nick, whose internet stopped him getting the email about the start time, and must have been about 15 minutes behind the start.No dramas until Daglingworth, where Richard discovered his Garmin had fallen off. A search back down the road didn't turn up anything; neither did a bigger search post ride. Terrible bad luck. The run in to Northleach was enjoyed by all, as was the lunch stop in the square. Immediately afterwards came an evil climb, added to the evil climb out of Bourton to LIttle Rissington, meant that the mercury was well and truly rising. My Garmin said 37 celsius at one point. The brilliant long downhill into the Thames Valley was only punctuated by a couple of rises, and we were totally ready for ice creams at the end. A short stretch on the A420 before lanes that will be beautiful in evening sunshine to Stanford-in-the-Vale. An opportunity to Denchworth Dash (which has been resurfaced) on the way back to Grove. Lots of glorious lanes and some easy fast sections. We made good progress, in the warm air the tyres were humming along. We got to Buckland quickly and descended the smooth tarmac to the Thames. Some of us had a bit of a blast along to Bampton. The flat easy miles to Clanfield and Radcot were gobbled up and then the quiet lane and the only climb of the road to Littleworth. A short section of the A420 was negotiated quickly and then the glorious Sandy Lane in the golden evening light to Hatford. One of my favourite roads in the Vale. We tried to avoid the potholes through Stanford (this road needs resurfacing as it's in a terrible state) and onto the A417 and Park Lane. Some of us went for Denchworth Dash which was a fitting end to a fabulous ride in fabulous weather. Thanks for coming along | ||

Next it was the lovely little village of Boxford where we went left for another undulating 10 miles on empty roads keeping together like a mini Peleton all nicely tucked in behind Frank and Geoff, thanks lads! The finale was a windless, fast decent down Chain Hill which wrapped up a great ride before we shook hands and home for tea. Thanks for coming fellas. | ||

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:The 2* Anniversary Ride will take us along the famous Spring Line - all those villages below the Ridgeway where water seeps out from the chalk rock and various local rivers and streams form, including the River Ock and Letcombe Brook. The good news is that we follow the base of the ridge, and we carefully avoid going up it! We will go out through the Letcombes to Childrey, along to Sparsholt and Westcot, then past the base of White Horse Hill to Ashbury, where we will drop down to Shrivenham. From there we head back through the Vale to Uffington, arriving at the Village Hall at 3 just in time for the special tea and cake stop. After the celebrations, we will take the direct route back via Baulking, Goosey and Denchworth. About 32 miles in total, at a gentle speed of around 12mph. |

It was also wonderful to see old timers from those first club rides 20 years ago, alongside new riders who have only discovered the club in the last few months.The ride was fun, it was a big group that kept together very well, lots of chat and banter and the cloud cover kept things mercifully cooler that in recent days. It was also great to see Uffington Village Hall full of cyclists chatting, enjoying themselves and doing what cyclists do best - eating cake! And what a great selection of cakes, all donated by members and in some cases home made by them! We finished with a gentle potter back across the Vale. Description:CTC Wantage celebrates its 20th Anniversary with a special afternoon of rides at various levels all culminating in a special tea and cake stop.I'm thinking something a bit unusual for this special 20th anniversary ride. Trying some hills we normally go the other way up and roads we rarely (if ever) traverse. Out through Wantage to Childrey and up the unnamed hill we normally come down from the top of Hackpen Hill. Down into Lambourn and then up Baydon Road (we've never been up there that I know of!). Along to Foxhill and down Hatchett Hill (again not been up or down this one). Then how about a reverse climb of White Horse Hill? I've never done that. Have you? If we have time we can optionally do that. We'll deserve plenty of cakes at the special anniversary tea-stop at Uffington after that lot before a short ride back to Grove. |

Riders:Andy PixtonAshley Brown Bryan Charleston Cathy Brown David Bridge David Smith David Talboys Janet Charleston John Talbot Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Nick Dunton Phil Stubbings Richard Preece Richard Saunders Stephen Quartermain Ursula Hallam Riders = 17 Weather:Report:Great turnout for our 20th Anniversary on a much cooler and cloudier afternoon than of late.We set off via Wantage and along to Sparsholt before tackling the hill up to the top of Hackpen Hill. We should do this hill more often, good surface and a steady climb, it makes a nice change from Hackpen! After re-grouping at the top we had a super fast descent into Lambourn which was great fun. We turned right and left to head up Baydon Hill. I've never been up here before and it was a nice steady climb. The Baydon Road to Foxhill was undulating, it reminded me of the road from Farnborough to West Ilsley. Some nice descents and some short sharp ascents. The descent to Hatchett Hill was interrupted by a giveway near the bottom which saw some sharp pulling on of brakes! The B4507 through Bishopstone and Idstone to Ashbury is as undulating in this direction as it is in the other! Most of us decided to tackle White Horse Hill in the reverse direction than we normally do, it's shorter and steeper this way around and somewhat easier. The descent the other side has great views but is about as nasty as the other side with cars coming up and a crossroads at the bottom. There was still loads of cake left when we got to Uffington, thanks to Carin, Kerry and Lorna for laying on a great spread. We had a lovely relaxing chat and social gathering with birthday cake (with unlit candles!) All the road groups went the same way back via Baulking and Goosey and we picked up a couple from the other groups and lost a few to make their own way back. A great afternoon, thanks for celebrating our 20th Anniversary with us | ||

CTC Wantage 20th Anniversary Off-road Ride | 2* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:CTC Wantage celebrates its 20th Anniversary with a special afternoon of rides at various levels all culminating in a special tea and cake stop.We'll head South to the Ridgeway, then West to Sparsholt Field, and along a road section to Uffington. (If we run better or worse for time there are a couple of other options.) We should arrive in Uffington for the tea stop about 3pm. After tea, we'll wind our way back to Grove on flatter ground. |
||
Report:A sunny day to mark the Wantage group's anniversary!3 of us (Jo came too) rode off for the Ridgeway on our most frequently used route: Crab Hill, Charlton, the cycle path, then up by Goddard's Brook and by the gallops turning left and angling up through the woods. We then did a sharp right and headed West to our Uffington tea stop. The wind was unusually easterly so helped us along. Worth noting that the massive ruts in clay-like soil just before Sparsholt Field have been filled and smoothed - we of course only discovered this after going down the bumpy track on the left! Then it was a fast-as-we-dared run down the farm track, and left on the road via Kingston Lisle to Uffington. We had a few tricky moments with ruts, but got there all ok. On the way back, we knew we would take the lowland route, but i could see a few interesting bridleways on the map. The first one by the railway was great. But the next one had een churned up by horses when wet and had then set solid with some hoof prints nearly a foot deep! Not what you'd call easy going. But, we struggled on and once past this and by the canal we had a more gentle final few miles back into Grove. All told 27 miles: 17 out and 10 back. A mini-epic in keeping with the best off-road rides! | ||

20th Anniversary Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:The very first ride organised for 'Wantage Cyclists' was on Sunday 18 July 1993, the first of a series of monthly 'day' rides on the third Sunday of the month. When Wantage CTC was formed in March 1994, this became our Regular Wantage ride, a cornerstone of our club programme ever since. So this ride is planned to be a little bit special...A classic touring ride into the Cotswolds for lunch in Burford and the option of a tea stop in Uffington on the way back. Just over 63 miles (100km) at a steady pace of 12-13mph. The route out is relatively flat with a few climbs on the return, when Plan A is to follow the Oxfordshire Cycleway (with options to shorten the route depending on the temperatures). We'll visit the twin churches of Eastleach, and to cool us down, an oft-frequented ford... Lunch will be taken at the Royal Oak in Burford one of the pubs that's served us very well as a lunch stop over 20 years. |
||
Riders:Amanda SeddonAndy Pixton Ashley Brown Barry Gills Cathy Brown Derek Boutle Des Higgs Katherine Boyce Mark Austin Mila Yearley Steve Swanton Riders = 11 Weather:Report:This was one of those rides (and there have been a few this summer) that will linger long in the memory. Not just for marking the 20th Anniversary of our very first Sunday ride, but a real tour through some of my favourite lanes with lovely scenery and a great group of people.After the heat of the previous week, it was refreshingly overcast and cool as 11 riders gathered beneath King Alfred’s statue. Out through Grove and Denchworth, we were quickly into the narrow lanes that were to be a feature day. Park Lane, Stanford, Hatford and then up over the Hideaway to Littleworth, we were soon enjoying the long straight descent into the Thames valley at Thrupp. Once over Radcot bridge we were in the Cotswolds and after a stretch of A-road to Clanfield we soon turned off onto the (un-)gated single-track road towards Broadwell. Here we first encountered a lorry (?) and then a lady on a skittish horse (who caused us to stop rather suddenly) and finally a 4x4 on what is usually one of the quietest roads in the county.. But this was by far the busiest lane all day and from then until lunch we hardly saw a car. We continued on the flat through Filkins and on to Eastleach, where after nearly two hours of riding we stopped for a breather and to look at the twin churches and Keble bridge. The ride from here to lunch was more undulating, and the road from Eastleach towards Burford (with a short 1in 5) was even new to me. As we descended into Little Barrington, Ashley and Cathy flashed past on their tandem but fortunately heard the instruction to turn right – and only overshot the turn by 50 yards or so. There were tantalising glimpses of the Windrush valley and the spire of Burford church through the trees as we took the lovely undulating, narrow “middle road” towards Burford. Soon we were sweeping past the Old Brewery down towards the main street, past the church and up to the Royal Oak. We sat out in the courtyard and as we were settling the sun finally broke through (as forecast) and it soon became decidedly hot. Food as always was excellent; the home-made pie of the day (it’s a real pie encased in pastry) is thoroughly recommended, even if it was too much to eat on a cycle ride! Everyone seemed happy to stick with Plan A, so we continued along the Windrush to Swinbrook to join the Oxfordshire Cycleway, which we followed for most of the route to Uffington. Having crossed the A40, we turned right towards Shilton and descended to the ford in the heart of the village. After the heatwave there was barely 3 inches of water, but only the leader enjoyed splashing through. We climbed out of the village and then on through Kencot, Broadwell, Langford and Little Faringdon to cross the Thames by St. John’s lock just east of Lechlade. As we cycled beside the Thames there was a great din overhead and the red arrows appeared above the trees accompanying a large military transporter plane (I’m told it was an Airbus A400M ’Atlas’ ) heading towards Fairford. A magnificent sight. Turning off the A417 just before Buscot, we then started climbing out of the Thames valley and up into the Vale, the ridge of Coleshill looming ahead. While the contenders for King of the Mountains, sped away, some of us took it more leisurely, regrouping in welcome shade at the top. The first climb had taken its toll and there was less energy on display on the second up past Badbury clumps. After catching our breath, we could enjoy the descent into Great Coxwell passing the Great Barn. The small climb from Little Coxwell was soon crested and there was a lovely cool descent through the trees down into Fernham. Soon we were in Uffington and a very welcome stop for tea and cakes at St Mary’s church. Former Wantage stalwarts Pat, Sue, Rex and Theresa arrived a little later and there was time for a chat before we headed our separate ways. With riders peeling off at various points on the way back, the ride ended in Grove after about 107km and a thoroughly enjoyable day. Thanks to everyone for your company. Great to meet Ashley and Cathy on their first Sunday ride with us, having cycled out from Oxford. Finally, congratulations to Pat on completing the London-Edinburgh-London (1400km over 5 days) solo the previous day. | ||

Report:Up and over the Ridgeway and back again; a fairly standard route, but nevertheless an enjoyable one, with the downhills of Wether Down (Old Street) and the 'Ginge singletrack' never failing to raise a grin.As an alternative to the 'bridge of doom' we returned via the track through the woods at West Ginge where we met the Upton Ladies ride (I think) who assured us they'd flattened all the nettles on their way through for us. Sadly the nettles had sprung back, along with the brambles, so we were left a little stung and scratched, but it takes more than that to put us off... but maybe we'll avoid that trail for a few weeks until the nettles have lost some of their string! In addition to Gary and John we were joined again by Gus O'Connell for the first half of the ride up to the foot of the Ridgeway. | ||

The secret route into the centre of Oxford was as wonderful and appreciated as ever. I thought it was a good idea to show the second group how easy it can be to climb a hill without your lungs exploding, as many didn't know how and looked upon the hill with fear.
