A very easy ride to lead, with no mechanicals or incidents, so we arrived at Blakes in good time and were well looked after with coffee and snacks. Sitting outside was still a bit chilly so we didn't stay too long as it was filling up with other cyclists - strange how it used to be all motorbikers, but it has turned to all cyclists!Everyone negotiated the only climb of the day (Buckland Hill) and we were soon back to base where a few of us forced down another coffee. Thanks to everyone for being a wonderful group to lead.

Description:A ride out and back to Garford using the track via Hanney Lane Bridge to West Hanney, returning via Lyford (13 miles). An opportunity to visit the tiny church in a farmyard at Garford.Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:Carin and 5 guys set off for Garford at a cracking pace. It was quite hard going as we were cycling into the wind all the way there. We did not use the track to Hanney but cycled on the road to Hanney via Denchworth.The church, through the farmyard was tranquil and sheltered so we had an explore and took a selfie before setting off for home again. John T led on the way back, although, with the wind behind us the going was much easier. We came back through Lyford as the scheduled route. A fun ride! Carin

Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Larkdown Allotments |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Off-road half day ride around local tracks, usually 15-30 miles. Knobbly tyres required. We are keen to welcome new riders of all abilities. Sometimes we ride in cold and/or wet - but please let us know if you are coming so we can tell you if we decide to cancel due to bad weather or other reasons.For this off road ride we’ll cover around 22mi/ 35km of some lovely trails/Bridleways around the Lockinge & Hendred Estates. Old St, Bluebell Wood, Catmore, Red Lane Wood, Dark Lane, West Ilsley & small sections of the Ridgeway. Stopping towards the end of the ride at The Court Hill Centre for refreshments. The ride has two climbs. Bluebell wood & from Channon Racing Stables, West Ilsley, leading up onto the Ridgeway. Neither of the climbs are too difficult though we’ll always take them at our own pace waiting for each other at the top. If you are coming by car then you can park on Larkhill opposite the allotments or you are welcome to park outside my house in Larkdown. This route is suitable for gravel bikes too! |
||
Report:We all had a very pleasant & fun ride along some nice trails plus two sections of The Ridgeway. As the temperature was getting quite warm I decided to reverse the route giving us two nice descents firstly from Scutchamer knob down into West Ilsley, & the second from Bluebell Wood down to the Copperage Rd. The Ridgeway seemed to have a steady stream of walkers & cyclists which was nice to see though once we’d moved off the Ridgeway onto the trails I can’t remember passing anyone which was really nice. We all had to contend with some nettles on the last part of the trail which lead us to our refreshment stop at the Court Hill Centre, this wasn’t to everyone’s liking, though a great refreshment stop highly recommended! Double Kudos to Joy as this was her first off road ride for a long time plus trying out her brand new gravel bike. Thanks to everyone for being great company.

Report:Despite the wonderful weather, just a small gathering of four riders....maybe - following the thunderstorms and the prospect of it being too hot.... (?) or just other commitments.....Three of us set out from OMH, and after about 2 miles, met up with Anke in Wantage. A gentle ride taking in the scenery and sunshine. Discussed the nature reserve that is between the Letcombes - I have never gone in - but earmarked for a visit on foot. We paused by the cress beds as we entered Letcombe Bassett, before tackling the "warm up" hill , into the village before psyching up for Holborn Hill. Holborn Hill duly conquered - a combination of electric bikes (good idea) a bit of walking and a bit of sweat.. Nice break at the top, and the rest of the ride was nice and relaxed - including the lovely long downhill from Childrey! In fact regular breaks - being the one star - and arriving back in Grove around 8.20. Thanks all for a lovely ride!

Occasional short or gentle climbs.A local away day ride that enables us to extend the route into areas less travelled on 1* rides. We start at Uffington Village Hall (plenty of free parking) and head to Fernham to take the road to Shrivenham, with good views across the Vale to the White Horse. Then we visit the lovely village of Bourton before joining the Springline Road at Bishopstone and following it to Ashbury for our cafe stop. We then drop down to Compton Beauchamp and wend our way back to Uffington. 20 miles / 32km |

Report:Just three of us, but a fun time was had as we explored the far west of the Vale having started the ride in Uffington. Summer Solstice Ride | 3* |

Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:4:15 am |
Start Location:Beacon Car Park |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader.This is a rewarding touring ride starting with watching the sun rise from the Ridgeway. We will then following the traditional route to Avebury (48k) where we will stop briefly to admire the stones. Then onto Marlborough (61k) to hopefully coincide with the opening of Cafe Nero (7.30am) for breakfast. From there we will make our way back to Wantage. Riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. |
||
Report:A group of 5 experienced (and a little bit mad!) riders met in Wantage at 4.15am for the annual Summer Solstice Ride.Unfortunately there were a few clouds over the Thames Valley so despite climbing up to Sparsholt Firs we didn't get to see the sunrise. The sky was still spectacular though. We couldn't really complain about the weather as it was lovely and warm (there can't be many mornings in the UK when you can be out so early in shorts and a short sleeved top) and the threatened showers stayed away. Its a hilly ride and having a broken sleep pattern plays with your head / energy levels adding to the toughness - but the group certainly rose to the challenge. Cafe Nero breakfast stop in Marlborough was definitely needed - so grateful it opens at 7.30am and with such great service.

Report:The sun came out for our ride up to White Horse Hill. We headed out to the spring line via Ickleton Road Childrey, Sparsholt and Westcot. Hills, leading to Hills but what a beautiful evening! As we approached the main hill of the day we were greeted by Tony Clark, so good to see him and he joined us for the return leg of the ride. Barry led the way up the Hill with Des cruising in his wake whilst Andy pulled me and David up the hill.We had previously had much discussion about how to tackle the cattle grid, although our adviser had himself come cropper on it! The conclusion was to get over the grid straight and fast and to take the hill at a pace suitable for the individual. So pleased to say we all cracked it without stopping, a great achievement, happy days. feeling proud as punch and energised we headed back to Grove via Uffington, Baulking and Goosey. Great to welcome Terry's son Matthew and also 'other Terry' Gashe. We also welcomed Jayne back for her second ride with us. We split into two groups for most of the ride, and thanks to Barry for helping out by leading the second group. There was a lot of traffic about and we had more than our fair share of impatient drivers, but overall it went well. We made an impromptu decision to drop down from Hinton Waldrist to Duxford to see the river, which was looking very fine although surprisingly deep and fast flowing - presumably the result of recent thunderstorms.A great coffee stop at Munch in Southmoor gave us the chance to catch uo with the 1* riders before heading home. Thanks to all for your company and a fun ride.

Riders:Barry StantonClare Hazell David Jackson Des Higgs Katherine Boyce Pauline Clark Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A beautiful sunny morning for a ride and lovely to have more girls than boys on a 2*! I had saved the ride to my garmin( unusually) and put trust in the planned route, although at the first turn into Denchworth I was suprised to be going left. At this point I renamed the ride the magical mystery tour to Filkins! We went to Goosey, Baulking, Fernham and the Coxwells and paused at Badbury Clumps to regroup. We then enjoyed a lovely descent to Coleshill where we turned to take the road to Buscot. At this point due to road closures around Lechlade our normally quiet lanes were rather busy, which was a little disconcerting. We rode on with care, through little Faringdon and Broughton Poggs to our cafe stop at Filkins Woollen Mill, a beautiful destination for a return visit for coffee, shopping and wander. From here the roads were rather quieter and we enjoyed the lanes through Langford and Grafton and onto Radcot, where we prepared for our final hill of the day up to Littleworth, before crossing the A420 to familiar territory, and home via Charney and Denchworth by which time it was becoming rather warm. A lovely morning with great company Thanks all.

Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Wantage Market Place |
Description:A gentle jaunt around off-road tracks from Wantage. We'll be taking it at an easy pace, and making sure everyone keeps up. Visiting lots of woodland. Maybe one steady climb of the Ridgeway if everyone is up for that.Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Off-road half day ride around local tracks, usually 15-30 miles. Knobbly tyres required. We are keen to welcome new riders of all abilities. Please let us know if you are coming so we can tell you if we decide to cancel due to bad weather or other reasons. |

Report:Very much a 'Three men on their bikes' feel to this ride I thought as I applied suncream at Wantage Market Place on a fine summer's morning. I wasn't wrong as we certainly enjoyed a bit of a natter and a few jokes and japes as we went along.We headed up to the Ridgeway via the well worn path by Goddards Brook and the gallops there, myself taking the overgrown Bitham Woods and Brian and Tim opting for the less overgrown track. At the top we were somewhat amazed to find muddy waters still in the puddles. So amazed in fact, that Brian fell off his bike. Fortunately, the soft ground cushioned his landing. We headed east on the Ridgeway, enjoying the views and the birdsong, and before long we were above Harwell, where we descended. Then we headed north, round the woods by the Campus, and on to Rowstock. From there we turned back west, making our way back to the Sustrans route and the Icknield Greenway back to Wantage.

The Five Hill Challenge | 3* |

Leader:Jo Little |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:The Beacon |
Description:PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN START TIME TO 8AMHopefully that will help with the heat a bit. Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. This is a challenge I have wished to try for 2 years and have decided to offer it to the club in case anyone wants to join me. The idea is to climb and/or descend the 5 main hills around Wantage. We start with climbing Hackpen and then along to Seven Barrows before descending Blowingstone. Then up and down White Horse Hill before climbing Ashbury Hill. We'll descend into Lambourn and have a cafe stop before the drag back to Hackpen. Then down into Letcombe and climb Court Hill before descending down Manor Road and then climbing Chain Hill. We then go to Saddleback for another cafe stop and some justified self-congratulations before the final descent of Chain Hill. As everyone knows I'm not very fast up hills so this ride will be taken at a steady pace and we'll regroup at the top of each hill. It's 45 miles and 1000m of climbing so will be probably be closer to an all day ride than a half day. |
||
Report:This was a rather crazy idea of mine that I offered to the club as well - to climb 5 of the hills surrounding Wantage. 3 other people were brave (daft?) enough to join me.The forecast was for the hottest day of the year so far, so we brought the start time forward which really helped. Hackpen was no problem and we all enjoyed Seven Barrows before heading off to White Horse Hill. It was already quite warm by then but we managed it (slowly in my case) and then all found Ashbury Hill no problem. We had a very welcome cafe stop at Goodies cafe in Lambourn and then on to Court Hill. By then it was hot and I found it very slow going but then we could enjoy the descent into Wantage before the last challenge of Chain Hill. This was made harder with a strong headwind but we got there. We all felt tired at the top of the hill but were feeling rather proud of ourselves by the time we returned to Wantage. Not necessarily something we would try again, but definitely glad we did it. Thank you to Ed for taking the headwind for me from Ashbury to Lambourn and thanks to everyone for being such a great group to cycle with.

Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. 1.5-2 hour ride at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph)Hackpen and 7 Barrows Pub Night! |
||
Report:A fine night for a climb, not too warm and with some strong legs amongst the riders. We headed out of Grove taking a sneaky short cut from OMH to Brereton Drive to avoid 3* throng. We then encountered heavy traffic on Denchworth Road and so took the cycle path from the aeroplane roundabout, before heading out to the Letcombes. Thankfully once on the village roads traffic was quiet and we could ride comfortably as a group, particularly beneficial as there was a head wind! Des was Ok with his Motor and Barry had warmed up over the weekend so he was on form too! As we climbed Gramps Hill the men overtook and I was happy to reach the top. We paused for breath and a drink before taking on Hackpen with the headwind to add to the challenge. Thanks Gareth for pulling me up and taking the front. Another breather on the ridgeway we enjoyed the descent to Lambourn before turning to pass 7 barrows for a gentler climb to join the ridgeway. All down Hill from here and with the wind mostly in our favour we cruised home via Kingston Lisle, Baulking and Goosey. No takers for pub night tonight all too tired after busy weekends. Thanks team for good company and support.

Riders:Andy BelcherGeoff Neill John Stamp Lorna Swanton Patrick O'Leary Sarah Macaulay Steve Swanton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A lovely morning for a ride. Following the Mary Green path and Wayland Road we went up to Brereton Drive, through to the new cycle path along Denchworth Road into Wantage, then Ham Road and up Ickleton Road to the Letcombe turn. Admiring the view over to the Ridgeway, we coasted down to Letcombe Regis for a short pause by the church, then made our way up past the cress beds, through Letcombe Bassett and regrouped at the top of Holborn Hill. Judging by the smiles, no-one had much difficulty getting up there. Descending to Childrey, we parted company, with John and Andy returning to Grove and the rest of us going on to coffee at Cantorist Farm. After a very pleasant break and chat there we left Sarah in Childrey and returned to Grove via Goosey and Denchworth. Thanks everyone, for your company.
