Report:
Very lucky with the weather today. The morning showers abated and the sun came out, but the first hour was into the wind. There were 19 of us (and almost 21 as we overtook James and Gareth practising hill climbing on Court Hill). After catching our breath at the top, the descent on the A338 to the monument was into the teeth of the wind. The climb up to Woolley got everyone panting. At this point the faster group split off following the same route through Chaddleworth and Brightwalton and Lilley before doing their extra loop via Peasmore, World's End, Beedon, Stanmore and E. Ilsley. The slow group split into 3 due to Barbara having a puncture and then taking a short cut while Pat and I swept round in pursuit of the others, all (the slow group) to be reunited by the water tower in Brightwalton. From Lilley there was a delightful ride to W. Ilsley through Catmore, then over the Ridgeway to the A34, Chilton GC and tea. Chris, Jan, Glen, Mary and Steve caught us up on the hill having taken a short cut to Stanmore, while the remaining 5 sportifs arrived just as the rest of us had finished queueing for tea.
From tea the led route was via the bridleway behind the Harwell reactor site and the Ginge farm road to Betterton, Ardington and back to Grove via lains Barn. Only 3 of us actually did the planned route! Peter and Darren (looking exhausted!)went straight into Wantage from Lockinge while the rest elected to take the road route to Hendred. The bridleway was fine and hardly sticky at all - honest!
It was a harder ride than usual for a Saturday, but good to get up onto the Downs for a change.

Report:
A superb but hilly route through the Cotswolds. Unfortunately, the early morning mist didn't really clear until the afternoon and some of the fine views around the north of the county were missed.
The first stage was uphill most of the way to Sibford Gower, where Kevin & Catherine were manning the first control and supplying bananas, chocolate biscuits and squash. There were a few more ups and downs to the second control in a cafe at Chipping Norton, where I stopped for a well-earned coffee break. After a few flatish miles to Bledington, there started the long but relatively gentle climb to Stow on the Wold. Then the roller-coater really started through Swell, Naunton and Aylesworth. Control no. 3 was manned by Laurent in the Corner Green cafe in Northleach, an excellent venue for a well-deserved lunch.
The next stretch towards Framlington was a bit dicey - sticky mud on a sharp down and then up. From then on the route continued along the Windrush and Evenlode Valleys back to Charlbury with widening views across the valleys. Tea, soup, rolls and cakes provided a most welcome end to a good day.

A sequence of 3 incorrect answers at the start of the fourth quarter saw them lose the pace and eventually finish 4 points behind the eventual champions. Report:
13 riders on a gorgeous sunny and mild afternoon. It was muddy, very muddy in places, but great fun. Pat took us South, climbing to the Ridgeway from Betterton then a nice descent to World's End. We then followed Old Road all the way to Chievely. It was slow going along the muddy tracks, traction was at a premium in places, with a lot of going sideways. Alan got in plenty of practise at falling over gracefully. " It's all part of the plan!", he said "I've got this mountain bike book that says the first thing you have to do is learn to fall over"... Eventually we reached Chievely and turned left to Hermitage for tea at the garden centre (which we didn't reach til nearly 4). Due to the late time, the return trip was on-road back through Chievely, Downend, Peasmore and Lilley as far as the top of Chain Hill. But then for the final descent we turned down into the grassy field and zoomed down to the gallops, eventually emerging at West Lockinge at dusk.
Angela and Alice came as far as World's End before heading up to Scutchamer knob for a more leisurely ride home. Good to have Julian out on a Wantage ride for the first time and to see Phil again.
Thanks Pat, another good'un.
