Leader:Eddie Little |
Start Time:9:30 am |

Description:Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.If you would like to join this ride, then please send me an email or text. edlittle157@gmail.com Text 07512645320. Keeping within the spirit of the Jubilee, I thought it would be nice to do a special half day ride & pay a visit to Berkshire’s 600-year-old Donnington Castle which overlooks the beautiful Lambourn Valley. Once we’ve finished our tour of the castle, grounds & views, we’ll head down into the village of Donnington & have our refreshment stop at the Honesty cafe where I’ve booked several tables. The route starts from Wantage & passes mostly through villages & a couple of hamlets, including the Letcombe’s, Lambourn, Great Shefford, Boxford, Winterbourne, Bagnor, Donnington, Curridge, Hermitage, Chieveley, Peasmore, Catmore, West Ilsley & Farnborough. We’ll then enjoy the wonderful chain Hill back down into Wantage. Ride Distance. 45mi/ 72km. |

Riders:Chris BaileyEddie Little Gerry Jones Jackie Walford Jenny Gower Jo Little John Tranter Sharon Bedford Terry Penn Riders = 9 Weather:Report:It was really nice to welcome Jackie on this ride who lives in Australia. Jackie is spending some time in the UK visiting family & friends, & also doing something we all enjoy doing & that’s cycling! It was also really wonderful to welcome Jenny & Terry back, after two years of absence from the club. We all look forward to seeing you all on future club rides!We tried out the new Honesty Cafe in Donnington village, a reasonable stop though service was a little slow. Coffee & cakes were very nice, also staff were very friendly so I would happily return! The ride went nice & smoothly with no mechanical’s, traffic conditions were extremely light too! The weather was reasonably kind to us, certainly a mixed bag! Only the odd drop of the wet stuff fell. Mostly cloud to start, followed by cloudy sun which was nice to finish the ride on, though we did experience some very tuff head winds! Many thanks to my wonderful wife Jo for multi-tasking duties, sweeping & secondary leading. Also thanks to everyone for being an amazing group to lead. Hopefully see you all very soon! | ||

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This is a pre-bookable ride. Please book your place by texting the ride leader no sooner than the Wednesday before the ride (don't forget to include your name).Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of 10-15 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:A lovely sunny evening for a ride. Following the recent heavy rain, we agreed a flexible plan in case of any muddiness on the unsurfaced sections. Through Charlton and along the Sustrans route to West Lockinge as planned, we then turned onto the Icknield Greenway to test the underwheel conditions. As the route had drained well, we continued through Ardington and on the track up to the new bridge over Ginge brook. This part of the route was new to my three companions and we stopped to admire the view above the bridge before dropping down onto it and then up the other side.After the off-road ascent, we rewarded ourselves by sharing the free chocolate butter cups handed out at the start (thank you Jane). Suitably rested we completed the climb up to Ginge, being gently overtaken by Susie and Roger in their open-top coupe. From the top of the hill above Ginge, we enjoyed the descent to Lockinge. Here Hilary left us to return to Wantage, while the rest of us climbed up the hill to Lains Barn. After another great descent we rolled back into Grove at about 8:10pm. Thanks all for your company on an enjoyable evening ride. | ||

Still it was worth the effort as the subsequent ride up in the Downs was lovely with some great views. Luckily the wind stayed in the same direction - which meant we were blown home. I understand at least one rider got a PR on the descent into Wantage via Manor Road. At 10 riders we might have got away with riding together but as the route did go on a few busier roads we decided it was best to split into 2 groups of 5. Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Inspired by the Women's Tour of Britain which passed through Wantage the day before, this is a leisurely bike ride from Wantage suitable for families, newcomers to cycling or those who prefer a relaxed, sociable ride. A chance to ride with a group and discover some of the local cycle routes on our doorstep.We'll follow a back cycling route out of town to East Challow and then the bridleway to Childrey, which has great views to the Downs and across the Vale. From Childrey, we'll drop into the Vale (with a short stretch along the A338 ) to Goosey with its large village green. We'll continue along quiet lanes to Denchworth and Grove, then pick-up the cyclepath along the A338 and use back roads through Charlton to bring us back to the Market Place. A total distance of 25km (15 miles), taken at a gentle pace (10 mph), stopping to take in the views and points of interest along the way. Optional refreshment stop in Wantage at the end of the ride (but please bring a drink with you). Please let me know by text if you would like to come. Suitable for children 8+ who are confident in riding on the road, accompanied by a parent. |
||
Report:I'd had no expressions of interest (knowing that most of our regular 1* riders were otherwise engaged), but not wanting to miss the opportunity for a ride, I ventured into the Market Place just in case. No one showed by 2pm, so I followed the route, as planned, on my own. Nice to be out on a pleasant if breezy afternoon, despite the lack of company. | ||

We will then head back via Stanford Road through Hatford and Charney. |
||
Riders:Barry StantonDavid Jackson Des Higgs James Bosley Karl Blake Robin Burridge Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 7 Report:A lovely morning for a ride out to Aston for coffee. A punctual start meant that we could head off just before 10 and beat the throngs who descend on Aston for Sunday Lunch. As we approached great Brook road Barry flew off, I thought he was getting the coffees in, however I soon discovered that this was not the case, he had in fact stopped for a comfort break! We arrived at Aston at 11 and were treated to a very relaxed coffee and some great cakes. We were joined by a new rider Robin Burridge who had no trouble keeping up with our 2* pace, his free wheeling behind me spurred me on and the usual crew of Des, Karl and Barry kept me going, and Barry ensured that the pace was maintained even in the wind heading back. David and James appeared to cruise around the route and James took the King of the Hill as we went into Faringdon.A beautiful morning great company and a rather speedy 2*. | ||

Midsummer Special Sunrise Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:4:15 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:This was a fully revised route last year that had to be rescheduled due to the weather. As I couldn't make the revised date, I am rerunning the same route this year! This is a pre-bookable ride, the group will be a maximum of 12 people and booking is now open. A hilly ride of 114km with 1150 meters of climbing starting at 4.15 in Wantage Market place.We will start by climbing to see the sunrise from Hackpen Hill before dropping down to take the Springline Road through to Chilseldon. After Avebury we will take the back roads to Marlborough, passing the little known Marlborough White Horse. Return will be via Ramsbury and, Hungerford, before taking our previous route with one of the easier climbs over the Ridgeway to Chain Hill for a usually glorious decent back to Wantage. Please bring snacks with you as we will not be stopping at the garage in Chilseldon as in previous years. We are likely to pass through Marlborough too early for a proper breakfast but can grab a coffee and cake(?) from Cafe Nero before going on to Hungerford for a 'proper' stop at Elianes. You will also need to bring lights, suncream and layers to stave off the pre-dawn chill! |
||
Report:Despite a leader who was late and who couldn't get the ride to load on their device until Marlborough, this was a glorious ride. We rarely get a sunrise on the solstice ride but boy did we this year. Made all the sweeter having been listening to the hammering rain as we all tried to get early nights for our early start!The first half of the ride passed 2 white horses and roads seldom used due to heavy traffic. Before 7.30 on a Sunday they were lovely . Cafe Nero had just opened and provided just what we needed. A cunning route to Ramsbury and a decision to bypass Hungerford as another stop was not necessary. As a result we discovered some interesting, pretty and quiet roads that we will attempt to replicate next year. Sadly Jo had a puncture out of Boxford that couldn't be fully rectified and led to the splitting of the group. A ride that good didn't deserve to fizzle out, but hopefully there's next year for a grand finale. Thanks to a lovely, knowledgeable and entertaining group | ||

Riders:Barry StantonBrendan St John David Jackson Des Higgs Gareth Smith Gerry Jones Joanna Houlston Karl Blake Riders = 8 Report:It was the longest day of the year and the weather conditions during the evening were perfect for a cycle ride. Our route out to White Horse Hill mainly followed the spring line road (the B4507) apart from taking the minor roads through Childrey, Sparsholt and Wescot. We were rewarded with a fine view from White Horse Hill. After the descent through Woolstone it was a flat ride back. At Uffington we departed very slightly from the advertised route by taking the route past the pub in Uffington rather than than past the church. Des Higgs had advised that the roads this way round had fewer potholes - and indeed it does have a good cycling surface. This contrasted with with the loose gravel on the B4506 - which apparently had been recently resurfaced for the Women's Cycle Tour. Quite how such a surface, even when the loose chippings had been swept away, was deemed good for a cycle race was puzzling. | ||

Riders:Barry StantonDavid Jackson Des Higgs Gerry Jones Karl Blake Stephanie Haddrell Steve Swanton Riders = 7 Report:Not a very nice start as it started to rain as soon as I got to Old Mill Hall. David kindly lent me a waterproof although after Charney I was too hot so it was back in Steph's bag. We kept a very brisk pace to coffee at Coleshill, via Fernham and Coxwell. I must say the coffee and cakes were excellent and it wasn't too busy. After coffee David discovered Steph's bike had blown over and the rear mech had bent into the wheel. Good old Karl carried out a temporary repair to get her home with a repair appointment booked with Karl for Sunday.We stopped at my place for an extra cup of tea or coffee which we all agreed on. A very enjoyable ride with a very good group and no problems (apart from Steph's bike problem). There was no more rain either! Thank you all, Des | ||

Somerset Special ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Commercial Road Car Park, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5DA |
Description:A relatively short, away day ride previously done by the club many years ago. The morning is an introduction to the Somerset Levels, followed by a trip up Cheddar Gorge - one of the iconic British cycling hills - before a brief taste of the Mendip Hills. We'll stop after an hour or so at Sweets Tea Room and Museum, where a warm welcome is always given to cyclists and then at Masburys Cafe in the Rocky Mountain Nursery towards the end of the ride. Please let me know you are coming, the group will be a maximum of 12.Parking is £2 for all day at Commercial Road Car Park, Commercial Road, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5DA. Pay by phone is possible. |
||
Report:Note to future ride leaders considering doing a ride in Somerset on Glastonbury weekend: consider the impact of 5 Glastonbury Shuttle Buses travelling to the festival and their impact on travel times. If you don't, always good to be giving a lift to someone who knows the area so well, they can find you a less slow route unbeknown to apple maps . The benefit of arriving late was we missed the only shower of the day, result!Those of us that had previously done this ride had forgotten what a gem it was. Beautiful lanes, fantastic views and a great brunch stop. We heard Glastonbury Festival before we saw it and benefited in the first part of the ride from a number of roads being closed to prevent festival traffic from straying off the main roads. Plenty of sharp inclines kept us on our toes until we reached the Levels. They have a different, bleaker beauty than the surrounding hills. After a splendid brunch stop at Sweets, on towards Cheddar and the climb out of the Gorge. Everyone took it at their own pace and we all regrouped at the top. The ride through the Mendips was rolling with terrific views. The afternoon stop had chaotic service but they got there in the end! The final part of the ride was mainly on a ridge giving stunning views of Glastonbury Tor and the levels, before we knew it we were slipping back into Shepton Mallet. Thanks to all that came for making this a particularly splendid Club Away Day Maybe next year we will reverse the route and discover the fun of a Cheddar Gorge descent! | ||

Tuesday Evening 1* Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A ride out to Sparsholt through East Challow and Childrey, returning via Goosey. We'll use the bridleway from East Challow to Childrey (mostly metalled but with a short rougher section in the middle) and the A417 for 1/2 mile on the way to Goosey. Tonight is Pub Night with an optional stop for a sociable drink or meal at the Fox Inn, Denchworth towards the end of the ride. Although not essential (it is helpful to know), do text me if you are intending to come. Lights may be required if stopping at the Fox.Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of 10-15 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:A couple of riders had to drop out in the afternoon but there were still 5 of us on our ride out to Sparsholt. Taking the Wayland Road route out from OMH, we managed to briefly catch up with and wave past the two 3* groups on Denchworth Road. We joined the new cyclepath from Liberator Drive towards Wantage up to the No-plane on a stick roundabout and stopped briefly by the sad remains of the de Havilland Venom that had been brought down by Storm Eunice in February.As conversation turned to the airfield, a short detour to the RAF/USAAF memorial at the end of the runway seemed appropriate, as this was new to several riders. Retracing our steps we picked up the old airfield path through to Stockham, now metalled from the canal to Pike Reach. We continued on route through East Challow and Childrey to Sparsholt, where we stopped for a rest and chat by the church. On another occasion we might have stopped at the Star, but with a pub stop scheduled at the Fox, we did not linger too long before turning back. We enjoyed the long gentle descent from Childrey to Challow Station. The A417 was relatively quiet and we could relax again on the lane into Goosey. We bemoaned the loss of the goose and goslings weather vane on the Old Pound in passing. We were the first group at the Fox and the rest of the group stopped for a drink while I headed home. Thanks all for an enjoyable evening ride | ||

Consequently we split into two groups with Roger leading the chasing pack!A pleasant and fairly uneventful ride saw Mila having a welcome return to Tuesday evenings. An unexpected sighting of some 3* riders suggested something had gone awry?! Anyway the second group must have felt hunger pangs once into the vale as they sped off to claim the best seats at the Fox. Group A decided to maintain decorum and kept to a steady 2* pace back to base. | ||
