Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This is a hilly, winter warmer of a ride. From Grove to Wantage, up Chain Hill and then left on the rollercoaster road to Ilsley. Then south through Beedon to Chievely. Then over the "Winterbourne Alp" to Boxford. Then back up to Brightwalton. Then across to Fawley and back to Wantage via the big descent of Court Hill and Letcombe Regis. Possible tea stop at Sainsburys at the end, depending on timing and weather. 2,000ft of climbing in around 38 miles makes this a good test. |

Report:Ahem... well, the howling gales triggered a total change of plan as we didn't fancy being blown off the edge of the Downs! So - new plan: up the Vale and just a quick thigh tickler up Uffington White Horse Hill to give us some exercise. Of course, the beauty of going that way was that after grovelling into the wind for the first half of the ride, we flew back home via Fernham, Shellingford and Charney Bassett and got back in time to see Ireland win the rugby. And - I've now got a bonus ride plan up my sleeve for next time! Thanks to everyone mad enough to come out on such a wild afternoon. | ||

Report:Or rather Snowdrops in Wantage & Sparsholt. With a headwind and steady rain, cycling from Grove into Wantage was hard work and it was no day to be cycling over the Downs. I wasn't expecting a crowd and it was hardly surprising that no one else turned up. After waiting 10 minutes in the Market Place, and already wet, I decided I might as well get a ride in and so started out westwards along Priory Road. Almost at once, I was delighted to see snowdrops in the churchyard. After a quick photo stop, I continued on towards Westcot along the B-road and turned back towards Sparsholt. Here there are snowdrops in abundance in a area of woodland opposite the church. Well worth the stop and we should see them again on Glenn's ride on Sunday. Returned home by way of Goosey and Denchworth, damp but pleased to have at least been out. | ||

Riders:Adrian WestBen Szulc David Emms Derek Boutle Des Higgs Ginny Henderson Glen Savegar Stuart Hunter Tessa Darley Riders = 9 Report:So lucky with the weather, as the forecast was not looking great earlier in the week. Heading out into a cold, overcast, but dry day, we stopped briefly to pick up Stuart and Ben who were awaiting our arrival at Coxwell Tythe Barn.Snowdrops (the floral kind!) were in abundance along the grass banks, adding a welcome splash of colour to the grey winter light, and an early sign that spring will (eventually..) be here. Some "on the move" map reading on unfamiliar territory and shaky bar bag was needed after a missed turning at Buscot to bring us back on quiet Cotswold lanes, arriving in good time for lunch at the Royal Oak Burford, nicely placed away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Good choice Des! Thankyou A short stretch of cycleway with nice views of the Windrush, followed by a quick crossing of the A40, and we were soon heading for home, remembering of course to check if Aston pottery still served tea and cakes Post tea, all that remained was the navigation of the Great Brook tow path and the final ascent of the day to Buckland. Having said goodbye to everyone on the final stretch, Adrian and myself arrived at King Alfreds Statue for near to 5 oclock, having covered a little over 60 miles I think. My jelly legs will testify that Thanks everyone, Glen S | ||

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30 - 40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of ~18km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.Pretty flat route this month. From Grove we will go via Denchworth, Lyford, Garford and Frilford to Marcham. We will turn north to Cothill and Dry Sandford to the Wootton road. We will skirt below Boar's Hill via the pretty village of Sunningwell to Radley. From Radley we will follow NCN 5 along the old Abingdon branch railway to Abbey Gardens. Sticking close to the Thames past St Helen's Wharf. We will stay on the NCN route south along Peep-o-day Lane past the new Wilts & Berks Canal basin to Sutton Courtenay. The NCN route has a good surface throughout but if it's very wet we will use an on-road alternative. Heading westwards now to Drayton and south to Steventon and up the little climb to Milton Heights which should hone your appetite for the tea-stop at Q Gardens Farm Shop at the top. After refreshments we will head along Featherbed Lane and through East Hendred to West Hendred. South towards Ginge and Ardington. Final drop down Grove Park Drive past Lain's Barn and back to Grove. Distance is 35 miles. We should be back before dusk but lights are recommended for the final stretch. |

Riders:Adrian WestChris Walters David Wynn (deceased) Frank Schroer Guy Yeates Iain Kent John Talbot John Tranter Richard Divall Steve Swanton Tracey Talbot Riders = 11 Report:Eleven riders set off from Old Mill Hall. We enjoyed good sunshine through Denchworth, Lyford and Garford. And then all hell let loose! The mother of all hailstorms threatened to smash us to bits or blow us off of our bikes! It was all over in less than 5 minutes but we were soaked and cold and sore. A bit unfortunate as the weather on the rest of the ride was pretty decent, some sun with a couple of very short light showers. We stuck to the planned route through Marcham, Dry Sandford and Wootton. A quick breather after a slipped chain in Sunningwell and through Radley. We were already wet so I decided to take the NCN option which was going to be wet and a bit muddy but overall it was fine and quick traffic-free cycling. The loos in Abbey Gardens were closed which was a disappointment to some of us so we continued. Iain suffered a puncture next to the Thames as we were leaving Abingdon so we had a brief enforced stop. We went along Peep-o-Day Lane to Drayton and Steventon and the one real hill of the ride to the tea-stop at Q Farm Shop. We just made it with a few minutes to spare before they closed at 4pm. A few riders had peeled off to their homes along the way so we were down to seven for tea and cakes and six for the final speedy push through the Hendreds, Ginge and Lockinge back to Grove. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride, I hope everyone else did too and you'll have something to do on Sunday now, i.e. cleaning your bikes Thanks for the company and joining the ride. | ||
