Saturday afternoon ride from Grove 3*
Leader:
Stephen Quartermain
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Route change - still a 45 mile ride but with a cafe stop at the Lechlade Garden Centre.

The route is as follows:
Denchworth, Goosey, Baulking, Uffington, Longcot, Shrivenham, Highworth, Coleshill, Buscot Wick, Lechlade (Garden Centre-tea stop), Clanfield, Bampton, Buckland, Charney Bassett, Denchworth, Grove

Report:
Weather was good - sunny with some clouds but a little on the windy side. Most of the way to Lechlade garden centre we seemed to have a nice tail wind which meant that we made good progress.

There was a slight change of route just after Shrivenham taking a more scenic route to Coleshill and avoiding Highworth town centre. Coleshill was probably the steepest hill of the day - the route being fairly flat.

We were able to sit outside at the garden centre and enjoy the usual coffee, tea & cakes. On the way back we had the wind against us and although it was fairly flat, until the climb to Buckland, it was quite hardwork compared with the route out.

No punctures or mechanical problems to report. Only one incident being a front wheel clipped the rear wheel of a rider. A hairy moment but thankfully did not result in an accident. Well saved by the rider!

Arrived back at 5.00 pm having covered 45 miles.

Description:
Long, hilly, quick - or any combination! - 35-45km

Hillier ride this week. A figure-8 ride with a couple of hills.

We'll go up Grove Park Drive past Lain's Barn and through Lockinge and Ginge to West Hendred. Along Featherbed Lane to Milton Hill and into Harwell.

Along A417 to West Hagbourne and up and over Hagbourne Hill to Chilton. Back to Milton Hill via Rowstock. Down Steventon Hill and a chance for a sprint along Hanney Road to East Hanney.

Depending on time we will then either return to Grove via West Hanney and Denchworth or the quick way along the A338.

As we were waiting to set off the rain started. A heavyish shower that lasted as we went up past Lain's Barn and through Lockinge. It had mostly stopped by the time we got to Harwell though.

It was obviously nutters on the road night tonight as there were some really stupid manoeuvres. We didn't let the petrol heads put us off though.

The always surprisingly tough Hagbourne Hill stretched the legs and then it was plain sailing through Rowstock and Steventon in late evening sunshine. The Hanney Road was as long as ever and we took the quick way back to Grove having covered 25 miles in just over 90mins. Good effort everyone.

12th Midsummer morning ride to Avebury 3*
Leader:

Start Time:
4:00 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Final update: 14 booked for breakfast. Forecast is for a clear but cool night and showers later, so dress warmly and we may see the sun rise.

The return of a Wantage classic after a gap of 4 years. A hilly ride of about 70 miles through the early morning over the Wessex Downs to Avebury for breakfast, taking in some beautiful (but easy) off-road on the gallops above Manton and the Marlborough-Chiseldon railway line (10-miles-ish total).

Starting in the dark at 4am (lights required), we'll climb Hackpen Hill to see the sunrise over the Vale at ~4:45. We'll drop down into Lambourn (possible 5am pick-up) and continue via Baydon to Aldbourne for an early morning pre-breakfast stop on the green. There is an easy off-road section along the gallops north of Marlborough en route to breakfast at The Red Lion in Avebury at 8:30am (booking now closed).

We return via Marlborough, the Chiselden railway path and Badbury Wick (coffee/beer stop) and then along the foot of the Downs back to Wantage, returning about 1:30.

This will be remembered as the Wet One! The VERY Wet One. But not before we'd seen a fantastic sunrise over a Vale blanketed in low-lying mist.

11 riders set off from the Market Place at about 4:10 in the half-light of a cool but clear morning. As we climbed towards the Childrey cross-roads there was a stunning view across the Vale, blanketed in a low-lying mist with a reddening sky above. We reached the top of Hackpen hill in good time and were soon joined by Pat. At 4:46 the sun broke the horizon and rose behind a distant layer of cloud as a fine orange disc. Wow!

To be continued...

On the proviso that the weather stays dry we'll be going through Wantage to the Letcombes, up Court Hill, down to Woolley, across to Brightwalton and Catmore, finally coming back into Wantage down Chain Hill. If the weather isn't looking so friendly then we will be doing an alternative, flatter route.

Slightly into the wind to start off with and then the slog up Court Hill. Whizzed down to Woolley and then up my least favourite hill in the entire world, whizz back down to the main road and a special surprise in store - another hill, which took us to Brightwalton. Back along the main road to Chain Hill and the final reward for all that climbing, down Chain Hill to Wantage where most of the group returned to Grove whilst some of us peeled off home.
A really quick ride this evening, considering all those hills....rock on!

It was lovely pleasant evening for a ride. There seemed to be a good level of conversations amongst riders. Couple of impromptu 'interest stops'; deers in field, views of the South Downs plus one rest stop. Generally the group stayed together and no one fell off the end. There weren't any untoward or near miss incidents. Arrived back a little late. Average speed 10.1mph and 18g of fat burnt off. Thanks to Andy Belcher for undertaking sweeper duties. Hopefully everyone enjoyed, pleasure to lead.

Another glorious evening for off-roading!

This time we went straight up Lark Hill, before turning left at the gallops and angling gently up the the Ridgeway just East of Baron Wantage's monument. Those with experience of both agreed that this was a more pleasant way to reach the ridge than going straight up Middlehill Down (know as 'Sheep Hill' by my kids for obvious reasons when there's a flock on there).

We continued East and our big descent for the evening was a brilliant Bridleway down into West Ginge. I've known this to be slippery when wet, but this time is was in great shape - fast and fun - though we slowed a bit on encountering a small but lively dog at the bottom. So good I'll note the grid ref: 445851

The other notable section was a tricky cambered/rutted drop down to a footbridge over the Ginge Brook. Two of us rode it and two walked. We took a picture of David descending - apparently balancing on the bridge handrail and the whole group of us.

Start Time:

Start Location:

Description:
This will be a fairly tough and quite hilly all-day ride. I like the symmetry of doing 100km (62 miles) with 1,000m of vertical climbing, so that's what we'll do! Up Chain Hill, Brightwalton, Boxford and over the valley to Marsh Benham. Then I want to introduce you to a hill that strikes fear into the hearts of all Berkshire riders - Combe Gibbet. If the slope doesn't get you, the hangman's noose will! Then a really interesting lunch stop at the Crofton steam pumping station on the Kennet and Avon. Then back via the Bedwyns, Chilton Foliat, Lambourne and Uffington. Oh, and I really want to fit in the gloriously named village of Faccombe...

A good group, good weather and a good ride - you can't ask for much more! It was fairly tough, as predicted, but everyone was up to the challenge, even on the great Combe itself. A good group, augmented by Frank meeting us in Wantage and Bob solo-ing out to Uffington. The great White Horse Hill was approached from Uffington village, thus enabling maximum pain and effort. I have to say that the group conquered the great hill with some ease and I was highly impressed. The honourable exception was Philip, honourable given that his reason for having a rest halfway up was that he had broken his chain with the sheer power of his climbing technique (I think that's what he said). Grateful thanks to Chris for being on hand from the 2* group to do repairs. A great descent and a good blast back through the Vale. Thanks to all!

A long ride with a long hill - we certainly made best use of the longest day of the year. An uneventful ride out over the rollers along the downs road to the bottom of White Horse Hill, albeit with a fierce headwind to contend with at a few points. Everyone made it up the hill very well with a few tactical stops to admire the view and to fix the broken bikes of the 3* group who overtook us on the hill. The views from the top were quite stunning!

Returning via Woolstone, Uffington and Goosey, we had a few wind-assisted dashes "just because we could", arriving back in Grove somewhat later than usual!

Very well done to everyone for conquering the local mountain - it's not an easy climb, but everyone did a great job (and thank you to Sorrel who did a great job of encouraging everyone)!

An interesting ride with 12 visitors from the Club de Velo D'Argentan (Abingdon's twin town in Normandy) and six less experienced riders from amongst the Abingdon hosts. Two (of the nine) Wantage riders rode on the first leg from Abingdon, the remainder joining at Grove. From there we split into two groups as we were 25 strong. The rain held off although we were faced with a strong head wind as we headed west through pretty downland villages to Coleshill tea rooms (good for the return journey). En route the French visitors took in some tourist spots - a cricket match at Childrey and the great barn at Great Coxwell. An enjoyable and slightly different ride. The full return to Abingdon, with the French visitors stopping off at the Red Lion in Drayton was 59 miles.

At 11 in the morning, Robin got a call from Chris - he'd crashed on a pre-ride ride, had bad gravel rash and was off to hospital. Not a great way to start the day! I agreed to lead the ride.

It was a scorchingly hot day already when we gathered at the crossroads in Lambourn. And the first part of the route was uphill towards Sheepdrove, so we got even hotter. We worked our way up to the Ridgeway at Gramps Hill with frequent stops to cool down, then headed West. Just before Uffington Hill Fort we passed several cars and vans on the Ridgeway, in some kind of illegal (vehicles not allowed on that part of Ridgeway) outdoor gathering. And a puncture delay.

We made it to the Malt Shovel pub at about 1640 - somewhat later than planned, but at least the beer was cool. We really needed the hydration by then - reckoning the temperature was about 28C. We also got a couple of messages from Chris saying he was still hurting, but had got treatment - before detailing the state of his bike down to the handlebar tape! Despite the heat, Adrian talked us into the optional extra climb up 7 Barrows and down again. That was all well, except the group got split while chatting about Adrian's astronomy website (www.meteorwatch.org) and not noticing that the two at the rear had followed the obvious sign down the wrong track. I backtracked and chased them down, though they had already figured out a route back to the main group.

Then it was back down the road to Lambourn, and home. I suspect a few more cold drinks were had!
