Roger came as far as Cumnor before having to return for other commitments. The rest of us enjoyed a cafe stop at Cogges before an easier return with the tailwind behind us. Thanks to everyone for being patient with me as I struggled to find the cafe and also for being a good group to cycle with. | ||

Riders:Chris MarchantDavid Jackson Des Higgs Gareth Smith Karl Blake Louise Bowers Paul Kyberd Roger Turnbull Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 9 Report:With June upon us the pre-planned rides are getting longer and at over 24 miles this one was no exception. The group of nine people (divided up into two sub-groups of four and five) set off in unpromising weather with some rain in the air and dark skies. However, after just a few miles the weather brightened and we had a very pleasant ride. We did cycle into a breeze almost all the way out to Uffington, but then much of the journey back was a real treat. The route consisted of heading to Uffington then back via Shellingford, Gainfield and Charney Bassett. The planned route turned northwards at Charney Bassett to make an extra loop to return via Lyford. A brief conference at this point showed that everyone was up for this and we completed the full course. It was getting dusky as we returned to Grove and just after reaching Old Mill Hall there was a downpour. Anyone either not in their car or having to cycle a little further to get home was soaked - but at least the rain had held off until then.An enjoyable ride and my thanks to Steph for leading the other sub-group and Des as sweep. | ||

Riders:Diana WhidborneLindsey Barker Lorna Swanton Sarah Macaulay Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Susie Turnbull Tim Waite Riders = 8 Weather:Report:The 80th anniversary of D-Day seemed a fitting day to visit the Harwell memorial stone, and we had a (mainly) fine, bright morning for our ride there. We set off a little late from Grove, having spent time welcoming new rider Lindsey, and nearly lost Sarah and Tim, both due to meet us by the church in Charlton, to the 2* ride, which got there before us. Fortunately they realised in time and held on for us. It was great to be able to get to Harwell Campus on quiet roads and dedicated cycle tracks (from the beautifully smooth to the very rough), to discover the memorial, and enjoy a leisurely coffee at the Lightbox cafe. And to see the 2* riders there. All in all, a very pleasant morning. Thanks, everyone, for your company. | ||

We loosely followed Lorna's D Day route to Harwell for coffee and then went on to visit the memorial, great timing as Karl had a puncture so as the 1* group arrived, we went and saw the memorial whilst Karl and Des fixed the puncture. We are keen to welcome new riders of all abilities.The first part of the ride takes us out through Lockinge & Betterton following the bridleway up through Great Bottom Wood, then passing over the Ridgeway descending to Landsend. Jo L was stuck at work so a quick leader swap occurred. Thanks to Jane for taking the lead of a second group.This was an interesting and good route which I hadn't done for quite some time. It was nice to climb Boars Hill and the views down to Oxford's dreaming spires were good. Even the A road sections around Marcham and Frilford were fairly quiet. Report:3 riders met for the 1* ride at OMH under leaden, foreboding skies. But gradually the overhead conditions improved, we even spotted patches of blue sky and sunlight and thankfully enjoyed a dry ride .Due to roadworks on the Denchworth Road in Stockham, I rerouted the first part of the ride along the A338 cyclepath and through the Market Square in Wantage. Anke and Susan met us by arrangement under King Alfred's statue. We continued via Church Street to the Portway/Ickleton Road before turning off to the Letcombes. It's always a lovely ride through the Letcombes with the wide views towards the Downs and passing picturesque cottages. But the climb of Holborn Hill always looms. Undeterred, everyone climbed at their own pace and we regrouped to catch our breath at the top. We descended into Childrey, stopped briefly by the surprisingly empty pond, before continuing on the lovely downhill to the A417. After the short stretch of main road, we turned off to Goosey, where the green was ablaze with buttercups and ox-eye daisies. Returning via Asti stud to Denchworth, we were back in Grove about 8:20pm. Thanks all for your company on an enjoyable ride. | ||

Leader:Jo Little |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders.A repeat of last year's ride to Bibury. Please note start time of 9am as we need to get to Coln St Aldwyn by 11.30 as the cafe closes at 12. We'll then go on to have a look at Bibury before returning, with a second cafe stop at Coleshill. This ride allows us to cycle through part of the Cotswolds but, at 715m of climbing, isn't too hilly. |
||
Report:We were lucky enough to have a warm, sunny day for the ride, although there was an annoying headwind on the way out. The stop at Coln St Aldwyn was as good as ever and setting off early worked well and we got there in plenty of time. Bibury was very busy and probably not worth visiting next time. The second half of the ride is more hilly but still nothing much and we arrived at Coleshill at lunch time. Despite the Father's Day crowds we were served reasonably quickly and then returned home.A really enjoyable day out and thanks to Roger and Nick for taking the wind/leading at times and to everyone for their company. | ||

Road works with traffic lights along Denchworth Road led to us heading out via the A338 and Wantage Market Place to pick up the Springline Road (B4507). Michael joined us at Childrey and we rode as two groups out to White Horse Hill. We had the expected effort (particularly for those not electrically assisted) to get up the to the usual car park by the road summit. For Paul a little harder as his bike failed to engage the easiest two gears! The weather was warm enough to linger a little and enjoy the achievement and view. After the descent we had a lovely view back with the moon visible in a blue sky over White Horse Hill. John then led one of the groups back at a slightly faster pace than other group. The ideal weather made the ride - and especially the journey back, a delight. I would like to thank John for leading one of the groups and Des for being sweep. | ||

Whoops!! Once poor Steve had cleaned himself up, we were then able to carry on to enjoy the rest of the beautiful evening. The trails were mostly nettle free & in reasonable condition though some areas were a little over grown with tall grass etc. Wildlife spotted - two muntjac at Hodcott Buildings. Tim was left a little bemused by the hot drink arrangements at the Community Shop - he was sat outside waiting for his hot chocolate to arrive, until it was pointed out to him that self service is the order of the day! There were a number of pressing appointments after the ride (yours truly included) so there was no post-ride coffee. | ||

2* Saturday Half Day Ride to the Thames | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph).This is a classic ride on some rarely used little roads down into the Thames Valley. Out via Denchworth and Park Lane to Stanford in the Vale, Hatford and a tiny road to the north. Then a quick dash down a short section of the A420 to Littleworth is rewarded by a dramatic drop into the Thames flood plain. Over the river to Clanfield, along to Bampton and a great tea stop at Aston Pottery. Pot buying is optional, but the cafe is great. Suitably fortified, we will take some time to explore the rarely travelled tiny lanes around Shifford down to the Thames at the mysterious hamlet of Chimney (tantalisingly close to the other side of Duxford ford), before conquering the modest challenge of Buckland Hill and (after exploring the back streets of Buckland village) heading for home via Charney Bassett. 40 miles and about four hours in total, so note the slightly earlier start time. |

Riders:Anke OttoBarry Stanton Chris Gray David Bridge David Jackson Des Higgs John Tranter Julie Haynes Karl Blake Roger Postbeschild Steve Swanton Riders = 11 Weather:Report:A good group and just about good weather, although we had a few spots of rain as we started off. Fortunately, it all brightened up as we carried on. We had to be strong to ride past Blake's in Clanfield and Lynwood in Bampton, but Aston Pottery was well up to standard, and we also enjoyed their lovely garden flower displays. The route less travelled down to Chimney and the river was as remote and interesting as ever. We even found a short stretch of road that Des had never ridden on before - that is a major achievement!Buckland Hill was conquered well by all and we rolled back to Grove for a second coffee for many. Thanks to all! | ||

Off Road Sunday Ride Ridgeway Explorer | 2* |
---|
Leader:Eddie Little |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Court Hill Centre, Wantage. |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Off-road half day ride around local tracks, usually 15-30 miles. Knobbly tyres required. We are keen to welcome new riders of all abilities.For this ride I thought it would be nice to start from the Court Hill Centre. We’ve kindly been given permission to use the car park.This will give riders a chance to ride a section of the Ridgeway without having to make one of the big climbs out of the Letcombe area onto the Ridgeway which can be quite daunting.The plan is to ride from Court Hill along the section of the Ridgeway out as far as Ashbury Hill 9 miles & then return to Court Hill in the opposite direction. This is a lovely section of the Ridgeway giving spectacular views across the Thames Valley in both directions. We’ll make two brief stops along the way, White Horse Hill & Wayland’s Smithy. Depending on how riders are feeling, there is the option to drop down into Ashbury for a tea stop at the Baking Bee shop & cafe. This will add an extra1.07mile to the overall ride distance not included below, plus a short climb afterwards along the bridleway to rejoin the Ridgeway. We will also have the option of a tea stop at the end of the ride at the Court Hill Centre. Ride distance 18 miles/28km. Route checked & trail conditions are very dry. Route suitable for gravel bikes too. |
||
Report:We set off from the Court Hill Centre & headed along the Ridgeway towards White Horse Hill & Ashbury which would be our tea stop & furthest destination before returning to Court Hill. The Ridgeway was nice & quiet which made for an enjoyable ride. Robin kindly showed us the bridleway over White Horse Hill which was new to me. On arrival at Ashbury we stopped at the Baking Bee Cafe for morning coffee. We were also joined by Steve who was out route checking. We all enjoyed some very fine coffee & tray bakes, along with excellent service. We returned along the Ridgeway to Court Hill passing a couple of horse riders along with a few dog walkers, still a reasonably quiet ride back which is always good. On arrival at Court Hill we decided to stop for lunch. One coffee, one pot of tea, one coke, two fish finger sandwiches & a bacon & sausage sandwich was consumed by three hungry riders. Also one slice of bread pudding which I took home. Always a pleasure to ride with Robin & Roger!! | ||

Summer Solstice Ride | 3* |

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:4:15 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader.This is a strenuous and hilly but rewarding all-day touring ride starting with watching the sun rise from the Ridgeway. We will then following the traditional route to Avebury (48k) where we will stop briefly to admire the stones. Then onto Marlborough (via their White Horse) to hopefully coincide with the opening of Cafe Nero (7.30am and 61km in) for breakfast. From there we will make our way back to Wantage. Riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. You may wish to bring a snack with you as there is only one stop. |
||
Report:Sadly not everyone who wanted to come on the ride was able to make it, so just 2 of us took up the challengeWith a stunning full moon setting as we cycled to Hackpen Hill, no traffic and the dawn chorus it was definitely not a usual ascent. We reached the top as the sun broke through and we enjoyed the beauty of the Thames Valley at sunrise before dropping down to the Springline road. We had our first car at 5am and very little traffic until after Hungerford. The current route uses the length of the Spring-line road before you reach the commuter villages of Swindon. Before we knew it, we were through Chisledon and once the hill to the Science Museum Library above Wroughton was summited, we stopped for our snack whilst admiring the lovely views. We continued rollercoasting along the eerily quiet main road from Swindon to Avebury where we admired the sleepers under the stones before carrying on to Marlborough. This year we approached the town centre via the bridleway through the girls school where you get great views of Marlborough’s tiny white horse. Whilst the route was stony, it was worth the detour. Unfortunately the usually open Cafe Nero was shut so we detoured to Hungerford for breakfast at Costa instead. Re-carbed we set off for the final hills and the glorious descent of Chainhill. Home before 11 with the rest of the day left to reminisce about a rather splendid morning adventure | ||

Report:Now this was summer!It a great ride; simple but with an initial climb to the Ridgeway from Market Place via Goddard's Brook, and then along across the top of the Letcombes, before a chalky descent from above Westcot. Then there was a final run to The Fox at Denchworth. The trail conditions were perfect, the weather was perfect, the company was perfect, the beers... You get the idea. | ||

The Baking Bee cafe looked after us very well with food, drinks and good service. 1* Saturday Half-Day Awayday Ride from Uffington | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington, SN7 7RE |
Description:Rescheduled from the 15th June, our regular social and family ride (usually on the third Saturday of the month), with a cafe stop. We cover 16-32km (10-20 miles) at a leisurely pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph), tackling the occasional hill (nothing too long) and easy off-road track (conditions permitting).For a change of scenery, an awayday ride around the western reaches of the vale starting from Uffington, with a refreshment stop at the Baking Bee cafe in Ashbury. There is ample parking by the village hall in Uffington. We'll cycle out through Longcot, Shrivenham and Bourton before a short climb to the foot of downs road at Bishopstone. We'll stop briefly there to admire the pond before continuing through Idstone into Ashbury. For those who fancy some extra exploring, there will be a 1-mile optional (hilly) loop around Ashbury and the little-visited neighbouring hamlet of Kingston Winslow before tea. We'll return to Uffington via Knighton, dropping back into the Vale on a lovely quiet lane. As we rejoin the Longcot-Uffington road we'll have superb views across to White Horse hill. A round trip of 17 miles with a few ups and downs but all taken at a gentle 10mph. Expect to be back in Uffington before 5pm. Please let me know if you are planning to come so that I can guide the cafe re numbers. For those who fancy a longer ride there is also the opportunity to cycle over to the start and back afterwards. I plan to cycle over. It's 8-9 miles from Grove via Goosey and Baulking and similar from Wantage via Childrey and Kingston Lisle. |

Riders:Anke OttoAnna Loughlin Barry Stanton David Bridge Des Higgs Diana Whidborne Julie Haynes Karl Blake Lorna Swanton Louise Bowers Steve Swanton Riders = 11 Weather:Report:A beautiful, warm and sunny afternoon for a ride and lovely to visit the far reaches of the vale, which was new territory for several riders. With 11 riders we split into 2 groups. But there was a slight hiccup shortly after the start when the second group took the road to Fernham rather than following us to Longcot. Group 1 stopped briefly by the former Uffington wharf buildings on the line of the old Wiltshire and Berkshire canal. When it was evident that group 2 wasn't following, we continued to Longcot - where they soon joined us.After that all went smoothly. We enjoyed a shady stop in Shrivenham before continuing on to picturesque Bourton, then crossed briefly into Wiltshire with fine views towards the Downs as we approached Bishopstone. We had a short rest there by the pond before continuing on to our refreshment stop at Ashbury. The coffee, tea and cakes at the Baking Bee cafe were excellent. It is nice to find a cafe that stays open that bit later (currently until 6pm) on a Saturday afternoon. From Ashbury we continued along the foot of the Downs road. Everyone took the short but steeper climb above Kingston Winslow with aplomb and we were soon coasting along enjoying the clear views across the vale. Then there came the lovely descent of Knighton Hill and long run out through the fields before we turned eastwards again just before the railway. We stopped briefly to enjoy what I consider the finest view of White Horse hill from the Vale. Des and Karl turned off to Longcot at this point while the rest of us made our way back to Uffington, arriving at a very busy village hall car park at 4:45pm. After a further rest, Lorna, Julie, Anke, David and I cycled back gently to Grove. Thanks all for your company on a lovely afternoon. Thanks to David for leading the second group and Karl and Des for sweeping. Thank to Anke too for the first photo. | ||
