Riders:Brian HipwellDes Higgs Diane Stuckey Edith Hipwell Helen Dorsett Neil Warner Stephen Quartermain Riders = 7 Report:Seven riders only tonight, obviously the grey sky and the localised storms around kept most people away. We did have a couple of light showers along the way but nothing very much. Jan came down to see us on our way and with Des leading we headed off towards Denchworth. A ride through Lyford and off to Fyfield across the A20. Through Longworth and across the footbridge to Southmoor, Charney Basset and home to Grove. Quite a quick ride, I was the slowest and averaged 21 k.p.h. 29 kms cycled in all.Diane

Riders:Amanda SeddonDavid Charlton Derek Boutle Des Higgs Diane Stuckey Gary Woodhead Ginny Henderson Jon Seddon Judi Boutle Nigel Stuckey Richard Divall Steve Swanton Riders = 12 Report:Four of us set off from Grove on our bikes with a very dark cloud overhead. My original plan was to go up Hackpen Hill but I decided that it may be better to stay closer to home so we could short cut into Charney Bassett if the heavens should decide to open on us. So the ride eventually went around Grove, across the West of Wantage and then we turned up the B4507. A nice fast ride down Silver Lane, left up the A417 and then right towards Denchworth. Just before Denchworth we turned left and then right at the T junction with a loop up around Lyford before our arrival at The Chequers in Charney Bassett. Steve S arrived on his bike a little later as did Dave Charlton. The weather had remained dry and by the time we finally cycled home it was a lovely evening.Unfortunately although we had booked a table, the pub was very busy and the kitchen was obviously under some pressure! I gather it is also under new ownership. Having ordered our meal at 20h00 it was well after 21h30 by the time it had arrived. Steve S was very resourceful and spoke to the management and it was decided that we would get pudding for free because of the long wait. Those that did not have pudding ended up with a reduction on their main meal. The food when it did arrive was pretty good, but the wait certainly would put me off trying it again for some time. Riders:Angela Douglas (dec)Brian Hipwell Brigitte Hickman Catherine Hickman Diane Stuckey Edith Hipwell Helen Beane Jan McCabe Jane Pearson John Holding Kevin Hickman Liz Russell Robert Bley Steve Swanton Riders = 14 Report:4 riders met in Wantage at 9am (twice as many as I was expecting). To avoid Grove and Denchworth and so as not to arrive too early at Millets, we took a roundabout route at relaxed pace. Intitally we headed East out to Lockinge and then north over Lains Barn. We were somewhat surprised to find ourselves being overtaken by a fleet of vintage cars along Grove Park Lane. At the A338 we turned left to Hanney, through both villages and then right to Lyford. Right again, then through Garford to the A338 and left at the cross-roads to Millets.Liz and Jane were already waiting for us at coffee. We were soon joined by Team Hickman and then 4 from Oxford including newcomer Elaine from Iowa. Diane took her leave to cycle home. After a relaxed stop, we headed out to Bampton via Charney Bassett, Gainfield and Buckland. Once there , there was a great inspection of maps to decide on the route back to CB for lunch. Having agreed that the ford at Duxford would be impassable after all the heavy rain, it was decided to retrace our steps. Edith and Brian were waiting for us on the village green and were amused to spy the main group turn left at the T-junction to head off in the direction of Southmoor.

Tuesday Evening Ride |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:GMS |
Description:For the rest of the season we will just be having one ride on Tuesdays at a relaxed pace. As evenings are getting shorter, lights are recommended.Mini-tour of Wantage this week via Denchworth, Childrey and Betterton. Some off-road mostly on good quality tracks although some potholes in places. |

Riders:Angela Douglas (dec)Barry Baker Chris Grieve Clive Elsmore Dave McLellan Diane Stuckey Helen Dorsett Henk Altmann (deceased) Jane Phillips Jeny Nicholls Liz Russell Perry Morrison Philip Thornton-Evison Sally Powis Steve Swanton Riders = 15 Report:A gorgeous evening attracted 15 riders including newcomer Chris from Didcot. Few club regulars, so we kept together as far as possible with Diane sweeping (even though she didn't recognise all the route).Out through Denchworth and on to the A338 where we turned left and then right into West Challow. The metalled bridleway up to Childrey was new to many and once in the village we turned off on the bridleway back to East Challow. Stopped after Silver Lane to admire the view across the Vale lit up by the low sun. In East Challow we climbed up to the B-road then enjoyed our first descent down into Wantage. A brief rest before and after the traffic lights on the A338 and then right into Icknield lane and around Springfield Road and Larkhill to route 44. By now it was darkening and the temperature was dropping under a clear sky. However, as it was clear decided that it was ok to continue planned route as enough people had lights. Climbed up to Betterton and up onto the Ardington road. Stopped at the top of the hill just as the sun was setting behind the trees. Tops were zipped up for a fast and cold descent into the village. the climb to the A417 warmed us up and then it was another cold descent into the Vale past Lains Barn. As we came out of the trees it was cold and mist was rising from the fields with distance clouds fringed in orange - wow. Back to Millbrook Sq at 8:10 after a most enjoyable ride. Steve S.
