Off-road Ride 2*
Leader:
Robin Tucker
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Off-roading in the dark is an experience you must try for your cycling life to be complete! Knobbly tyres and lights required.

About 15 miles up to the Ridgeway and back down again. Sometimes, by agreement on the night, we might go a bit further.

Bright lights are required for off-road riding in the dark, and a rear light for getting home. I have 2 spare ones that I can lend so you can see if you like it before buying your own. Contact me so I know to bring them.

Dark, cold and wet – we'll ride in any 2. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

Report:
A proper winter ride: cold and windy. No rain, but the ground was plenty wet which made for slow going.

Also, the Crab Hill track has been turned to slurry by a tractor.

And David had a puncture.

And developed squeaky bearings.

And had another slow puncture.

All in all, another great night out!

And David has now gone tubeless, in an effort to reduce the number and frequency of punctures that I am getting!

After having enough of punctures, I decided after this ride to go tubeless. So far so good (one month without a puncture, instead of the normal one per week average!)

Report:
A good turnout of 12 riders and it was great to see many people out today that I had not seen since the summer. It was a real 'feel good' ride to start the year off with on flat roads with good weather and quite a good pace. The wind was generally westerly and so it was a little blustery going out to Uffington but then more or less behind us up until Fyfield. Michael headed off back to Oxford at this point. An amazing contrast in the weather from the gales of the week and with the sun out, it was actually quite pleasant! Back at Grove by 3.30pm with a 15.3 mph average. Thanks to all for an enjoyable afternoon.

Regular Wantage Ride 3*
Leader:
David Smith
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Tour of the Hills

A hilly 82km ride to Hungerford via Lambourn, Aldbourne, Ramsbury and Froxfield. After a short lunch stop at either the Tutti Pole or Azuza cafe, both in Hungerford High Street, we will return to Wantage via Kintbury, Bagnor, Chieveley, Peasemore and finally Chain Hill. Hopefully there will be plenty of time for a coffee in Wantage Costa at the end.

Pace will be to suit the group, but will probably be at the lower end of 3* pace. I may shorten the route a little on the day depending upon weather conditions.

Lights will be required.

Report:
What a fantastic day for mid January! It was a cold 1 degree C when we set off and didn't get above 4 degrees C all day, but the sun shone throughout and we only had a head wind for a couple of short stretches in the morning.

Hackpen Hill got us all warmed up nicely and then it was a roller-coaster ride all the way to Hungerford! Paul & Andy dispatched Spring Hill with efficiency and apparently some cursing of the ride leader, can't think why.

We arrived in Hungerford about 12:00 and had a pleasant lunch in the Tutti Pole. The afternoon's route was much less hilly than the morning and with one or two exceptions it rose gently to the Ridgeway and we were then able to make the traditional dash back to Wantage down Chain Hill.

Thanks to Paul & Andy for coming out on a cold day, still not sure what Ursula & I would have done if nobody had turned up. :)

Richard returned with a mostly new transmission. Unfortunately his chain was skipping all over the place when he put the power down, but we traced this to a very worn middle chainring.

From then he swapped from granny to big ring and all went well until, just after climbing Lark Hill his new chain snapped! Fortunately a spare split link saved the day and we climbed to the Ridgeway, went East and down the Ginge singletrack, making used of some recently discovered twisty tracks in the woods.

A leisurely afternoon ride of about 30 miles to Abingdon to try out the new "Throwing Buns" cafe in the Market Place.

We'll follow a flat clockwise route passing through Lyford, Garford, Marcham, Cothill, Sunningwell and Radley, entering Abingdon on NCN5 past Radley Lakes on a short easy off-road section. We'll return by the direct route - Peep O'Day Lane (easy off-road), Drayton, Steventon & Hanney.

Off-road sections suitable for touring bikes and hybrids. We should be back in Grove before dusk, but lights recommended (just in case).

Report:
Having established that "Throwing Buns" was the name of the cafe and not a concept for the ride, 8 of us duly set off from Grove following the route as planned on a cool and initially overcast afternoon. Our luck was in; it stayed dry and from time to time the sun came out to cheer us. A highlight of the outward leg was the superb view on the descent of Sugsden's Lane between Sunningwell and Radley. The temperature then seemed to noticeably drop in the last few miles past Radley Lakes and along the Thames into Abingdon.

Throwing Buns Cafe was warm, cosy and busy; service was rapid and cake excellent. We expected it to feel very cold for the return leg, but somehow it didn't seem as cool as earlier. Steve Q turned off at the end of Peep O'Day Lane and the rest of us (sans Brian) continued back via the direct route. Lack of winter cycling miles caught up with a couple of riders and I dropped the pace to keep the group together as we cycled through Steventon and out across Cow Common towards a impressive sunset (and no headwind). Back in Grove at 4:45 at dusk; after an enjoyable afternoon's riding. Thanks everyone for your company.

A very nice evening with excellent company seated in the spacious but cozy banqueting hall, with a roaring fire to warm us on a chilly winters evening. Service was very efficient and food delicious with generous helpings. Some starters could have almost passed for main courses. Will most likely not need to eat again for at least a week! :-)

Following tea and coffee, it was soon time to say goodbye and go our seperate ways. Thanks everyone !
