Report:
6 days of glorious cycling in the beautiful Dorset countryside with 1500 other cyclists during the hottest August weather since 1976. Accommodation was good, rides excellent and enjoyable company. Only marred by Neil's accident on the last day, when he was knocked off his bike by a truck. (Any excuse for a trip in a helicopter with an attractive paramedic nurse!) Fortunately, Neil suffered nothing more than cuts and bruises thanks to the cushioning effect of the roadside brambles. Hope the bruises heal quickly, Neil.

Report:
Diane led the ride in the absence of the head honchos, who were all at the Birthday rides. Kevin arrived with young Tom, who seems to be growing up fast and was sitting very alert in the front seat on the bike. The group of twelve left Grove and headed past Denchworth and West Hanney, over the A415 and A420 to Appleton and the Farmoor reservoir. After a brief stop at the South African shop for provisions, we departed for Stanton Harcourt, over the newly tarred and chipped surfacing (!) to the tea stop at Linch Hill Leisure Park. This proved to be a revelation to most of the company. Tea, cold drinks, cakes and ice creams were eagerly consumed at picnic tables overlooking the splendid sunlit fishing lake. This venue warrants a revisit! See 'tea stops' for more information. Onwards via Northmoor, the Rose Revived and Longworth to the bridge over the A420, to Southmoor, Charney Bassett, Denchworth and Grove. Well done to Angela and Clare, who survived the trip and bettered all previous cycling excursions. Distance 37 miles.

Twenty three riders started from Grove, an amazing attendance considering that many of the regulars were in Dorset for the Birthday Rides. We cycled through Denchworth and Goosey, across the A417 to Baulking and Uffington. A left turn brought us to the base of Fawler hill and apart from three riders who walked the final bit, everyone made it up the climb. After a short eastward trip up the B4507, we then turned left, down through Westcot and Sparsholt, took a right through Childrey, then back across the B4507 and home via the Letcombes. Richard D kindly rode sweep for me and everyone appeared to keep up well. Those that left the ride in the final stages all notified me of their departure and I would say the ride turned out to be a leader

We managed to drop Angela at Lains Barn, but no-one noticed until we got to Ginge. Diane couldt find her, so Des was despatched to follow the entire route the other way, but to no avail.

She turned up later at the pub with Steve S, where she politely offered to allow Amanda to wear her orange juice.

Kevin led (?) riders over to Lambourn, were Sue took over. We then cycled over Hungerford Common to Inkpen, for lunch at the Swan PH, where Jan, Paul & Neil joined us - an excellent lunch was enjoyed by all.

The route then meandered back to Lambourn, for lashings of tea and home-made cakes at Lou & Mavis's, with a swim for those with energy to spare.

As the ride left to return over the Downs, Sue discovered she had a puncture, so the group were led back to Wantage by Lou, whilst Sue practised her patching skills...

------------

Some started from Wantage, some started from Lambourne. Some stopped at Lambourne, and some turned up at the pub. One miserable sod rode back by himself.
The Swan at Inkpen is commended on its extreemly small portions, but very nice pint of mild. Just dont buy lime and soda at over

Everyone looked capable, and with no chance of loosing Angela (as she wasn't riding) we set off as a single ride to follow the downs road to the White Horse. Problems immediately set in with Edith getting a puncture in the carpark, and a keen group dropping the leader.

We attempted to regroup at the foot of the White Horse hill where 4 of us set off to chase down the few that had already climbed the hill, leaving the rest to follow Neil on fixed once Edith had caught up.

Piers passed us towards the top of the hill, his second loop, and when we returned to the Uffington junction there was still no sign of Edith and some of the group had left anyhow, to be followd by the rest making their own way back via Goosey

I waited for Edith and our sweep to arrive, then decided that the leader should arrive first, and set out on the chase catching up just as they turned into Millbrook Square.

Seventeen riders followed Jon around Grove and West of Wantage until reaching the double roundabout at the A417. At this point Jon turned left towards Wantage and the fast ride took a trip up Manor Rd, and back down Court Hill finishing via the Letcombes and Childrey. The slower group of eleven followed Brian straight across the A417 through the Letcombes, Childrey, Goosey and Denchworth. 27 km.

A circle around Stanford in the Vale.

As we'd had a particularly dry summer, I thought it was probably a good opportunity to explore The Vale.

From Wantage we went via the newly "upgraded" track to West Lockinge and through to Ardington, before crossing the A417 to pick up Ardington Lane, crossing Cow Common.

We then crossed the Steventon Road along the route of the old Kennet and Avon canal. It was pretty overgrown on some of these tracks so it was a relief to turn left and meet the A338.

We then took a track to Garford where there was a longish road section to Charney Bassett where we took the bridleway to Pusey.

After a few more bridleways, falling off, bending a mech hanger and getting lost we got back to A417 just south of the A420.

A selection of the bumpiest bridleways and smooth tarmac brought us to Hardwell Lane and White Horse Hill.

A quick ice cream at the top and we were good to go.

One made dash across the Ridgeway and we were back in Wantage.
