Moderate Saturday Ride.
Leader:
Glen Savegar
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Regular Saturday afternoon ride of 60-70km with tea stop.

Planned route outline,(with some scope for flexibility..)

OUT-Old Mill Hall-Charney Bassett-Gainfield-Buckland-Bampton-Clanfield-Lechlade,Black Cat Tearooms.

RETURN-Coleshill-Great Coxwell-Little Coxwell-Fernham-Baulking-Goosey-Denchworth-Old Mill Hall.
Riders:
Chris Walters
Glen Savegar
Maurice Bawden
Riders = 3
Report:
The forecast was for wind from the South. It didn't disappoint!

The three stooges set off from Grove and wandered across the flatlands to Lechlade, whereupon the Black Cat Cafe was patronised by the three intrepid adventurers... a little bit like Last of The Summer Wine, but without Nora Batty!

The journey back was less windy than we feared, but that didn't stop a couple of deer jumping out in front of the group between Coleshill and Coxwell, a heart-stopping (fortunately not bike-stopping!) moment.

Our route can be seen here: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/1007986.

Thanks for the ride Glenn, very enjoyable!

Sun Oct 5th 2008
New Forest Gridiron
Leader:
Chris Walters
Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:
Boldre, Hampshire
Description:
100km ride around the periphery of the New Forest. The format is similar to an Audax, but with 600 expected riders, it will feel more like a Sportive! The plan is to ride at a moderate but not speedy pace (the controls will not be open if we go too fast!)

This is a fantastic ride around the scenic New Forest and very well organised.

Obviously car assisted - let me know ASAP if you intend to come, so we can arrange lift sharing.

http://www.wessexctc.org/grdetail.htm - you can book your entry (advised!) from this page.

Route here: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=20935.

Report:
For the second day in a row, the forecast was "sub optimal"! The additional promised riders of Steve and Angela (decorated the lounge), Paul S (drove as far as Winchester before turning back) and Steve Q (didn't even see him!) failed to materialise.

The weather was pretty poor (lashings of wind-driven rain) to start with, but we knuckled down and got the first stage over and done with and had a very welcome cuppa at Hyde. The rain had gone away by the time we emerged, so the remainder of the ride was done in much better conditions.

There were many hazards to negotiate... the obvious cattle grids which were wet and slippery, the fords which contained deep water in some cases (wet feet in general and a strategic portage around the ford near Woodlands - it looked too deep), many ponies, cows and even piglets (Sorrel wanted to take one home).

The second stop at Colbury had a much better biscuit selection so we munched and slurped outside in the sunshine before pushing onwards towards Beaulieu, where a fantastically timed ice-cream stop meant we avoided a monster downpour :-)

Just the final leg to go on flat roads back to Boldre, punctuated only by a quick stop to put some more air into Dean's back tire.

More tea and sandwiches followed at the end - a great ride despite the weather - good company and a fantastic and varied route, which can be seen here: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/1007981.

CTC Wantage AGM
Leader:
Chris Walters
Start Time:
7:30 pm
Start Location:
The Greyhound, Letcombe Regis
Description:
Please let either Glenn or Chris have nominations for committee members and any agenda items you'd like to see covered by Friday 26th September. You can offer yourself for election, or (with their permission) nominate another member for any of the following committee positions - all positions are up for re-election each year:

Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Welfare, Rides Secretary, Registration/ Membership, DA Representative, Publicity, Programme Editor, Ordinary Member.

It'd be great to see some of our many new members coming along to the AGM, and even volunteering to be part of the committee - new ideas and new approaches will help the club to grow, so please don't be backward about coming forwards!

We'll transact the normal business including reviewing the year and electing the committee for next year, but this year we have a number of motions that we need members to vote on, and they are all precipitated by the changes from the top of the CTC.

Formal business followed by a free finger buffet and social.

Off-road ride
Leader:
Geoff Neill
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
I have 2 possible routes, one for wet weather going by way of West Lockinge up on to the ridgeway and down to South Fawley and along towards Sheepdrove before turning north back on to the ridgeway.
Route 2 is harder and is a great ride but it does need to be dry and goes by way of Ginge and along ridgeway till A34 before heading SW pass gallops. Right on to Ilsley downs riding route, pass Lands end climbing back on to the ridgeway. About 20 miles with a 2hour 30minute journey time.
Riders:
David Bridge
Frank Schroer
Geoff Neill
Riders = 3
Report:
Route 2 was chosen as conditions were sunny and dry. Despite the low turnout the ride was most enjoyable and the trio were kept company by the numerous pheasants, rabbits and squirrels scurrying across the riders track, particularly in the wooded areas.Frank spotted a fox and a large Kite flew low overhead possibly to inspect us. A ride and nature study! To finish a pint in the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Wantage.

Regular Wantage Ride
Leader:
Sorrel Williams
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Regular touring ride from Wantage of around 80-100km with a pub stop for lunch.

80km route from Wantage to Newbury and back via Lambourn, Crooked Soley, Chilton Foliat, Hungerford and stopping at the Rising Sun in Stockcross for lunch. We then skirt the top of Newbury and return home home via Curridge, Hermitage, Compton, East and West Ilsey and Farnborough.

Detailed map of the route here http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=22099

Please note that this ride is not flat, it isn't particularly hilly either, but more undulating. The major hills are the ones going out of Wantage - if you don't fancy the hills, then either meet us in Lambourn or at the top of Sparsholt Firs/Hackpen/Sinchombe Hill. Please give me a call and we can arrange a time to meet/wait for you.

The Newbie Newbury Ride

Well, that was different! Started off with far many more people that I had expected (this was my first time leading a Sunday ride) and we headed off on the proposed route to Lambourn over Sinchombe/Hackpen/Sparsholt Firs hill. At the top of the hill, we certainly knew who had had their Weetabix for breakfast, and it wasn't me. After arriving in Lambourn, we took the slight gradient out towards Baydon and then turned towards Crooked Soley and Chilton Foliat where we said goodbye to Steve and Angela. On towards Hungerford and the Route 4 Sustrans route to Stockcross.
Arriving at lunch an hour earlier than I had booked (note to self, don't try and predict the time you're turning up!), the staff at the Rising Sun were very accomodating and friendly.

All fuelled up, we then headed over the top of Newbury and then through Hermitage, Compton, the Ilsey's and home. The wind certainly picked up on the way back, noticeable when you came to a gap in the hedge to be blown across the road! The run down Chain Hill was......interesting!

50 miles in total, a good ride had by all and the thought and planning that went into it seemed to have paid off!

Brian and Edith cycled out to Stoken Church on Friday 24th October on a Glorious sunny late morning stopping for tea and cake at the River side cafe at Benson. Riding on to Stoken Church climbing the hill through the cutting parrell to the M40 to reach the venue for Golden Beeches weekend arriving before the frost and the Dark. We staying at a family run Hotel atidstone for the weekend.
Saturday morning we arrived at Stoken Church for the first ride of the weekend
we decided to take the longer ride with promises of the hills not being to steep or the speed to fast from Barry. The weather was set fair for the first part of the day we headed out in the direction of Hambeldon Lock passing Turberville from Vicar of Dibley fame down in the valley looking very quite and peaceful.crisscrossing several of the major London road networks to reach Windsor Great Park. cycling in the park for several miles enjoying the car free routes and enjoying the a selection of the wild life that live there. when leaving the Park in Windsor for a hair brain trip through the town and sightseering trafric past the Castle Gates scary. The ride back to Stoken Church became hilly fast and furious to much for me. We decided to take the more direct route back a very hilly climb from Marlow to Stoken church and the rain began to fall. We made it back intime for tea feeling very tired but glad that I had done the ride.
Sunday morning arrived very wet decided we would head straight back home the same route we had arrived but with the big hills mainly down we made good time and arrived home in time for lunch. 120 miles travelled over the weekend.
