Report:
What a fabulous day! Over 90 riders took part, undoubtedly brought out by the fine weather. We just managed to cope in the morning when we ran out of Brevet cards. Great to have Kevin Mayne, CTC's Director, with us who rode 100 miles. Special congratulations to Dave Smith, John Ellis, Des Higgs and Steve Quartermain who joined renowned cycle tourist Neville Chanin in riding the full 125 (woops 133) mile distance, and also to Lucia who completed a century.
Thanks for everyone who helped by manning the registration desk or leading a ride (and paricularly to Sue or Mavis for donating the tin of quality Street).
More to come, when I've recovered!
Steve

Report:
South-eastwards and a few more hills this week on a glorious sunny evening. We took the A417 cyclepath to Charlton and then the newly resurfaced track from Larkdown to Lockinge. In Lockinge, the fast ride (12 riders) led by Steve rode ahead while the regular ride (6 riders) led by Edith continued at a more leisurely pace to the Betterton Turn.
The fast ride (or more like medium-fast) continued to Ginge turned down the hill to West Hendred and across the path to East hendred. Given the choice, the group decided they'd prefer to loop back up to the Ginge Farm track and return via Ardington and Lains Barn (rather than continuing to Steventon and back via the Hanneys. We enjoyed the climbs and the long descents. Back in Grove at 8:10pm after 15 miles.
We bid warm welcomes to newcomers Diana and Mike.

Report:
Despite an unsettled weather forecast and a strong southerly breeze 20 cyclists assembled in the Market Place (and two joined en route) for our first ride to the Chilterns for some time. We welcomed Tim and Peter, who coincidentally had both been out/met up with the club once during its early days.
The group split into 2 for the first section to Upton. The main ride took the scenic route via Lockinge (bridleway) , Ginge (farm track) and the Icknield Way to Harwell, while the "roadies" kept to the A417. Re-united we took a loop through the Vale via the Astons, South Moreton and Cholsey before an arduous climb back up to the A417 into the headwind. After a rest, we descended the rollercoater A417 into Streatley, crossed the Thames to Goring and then climbed up the Evendon valley onto the top of the Chilterns. With the climbing behind us, lunch was taken at the Red Lion in Woodcote, who were able to accommodate and feed all of us in good order (although they were only expecting 12).
After lunch it seemed colder and the heaviest shower of the day caught up with us just as we arrived at Maharajah's Well (unfortunately sans the board explaining its history). So it wasn't a day to linger. For the descent to Wallingford we followed NCN route 5 along some narrow lanes through lovely beech woods carpeted with bluebells. Then it was just a few miles via Shillingford Bridge to Dorchester for tea at the Abbey. As the tearoom was already full, we sat outside in the courtyard with threatening clouds overhead, but fortunately no rain. The tearoom had rather a good day. Just as we were leaving City Section arrived to continue the assault on the cakes.
For the return leg, we took the shortcut to Little Wittenham via the bridleway to Day's Lock. We also rode the recently (2002?) metalled section of NCN route 5 from Pendon Museum to the Appleford Road for the first time which cut out the long and frequently busy section of road. But with legs tiring and the headwind it was a bit of a drag back through the Vale. Eventually we reached East Hanney and then Grove, with riders numbers slowly dwindling as riders peeled off home. But then finally the sun came out to see the remaining 8 of us back into Wantage by 6:10pm after 56 miles and a good day.

A wet and slippery ride to Lambourn and back. We lost Norman in the Market Place, when his chain came off as soon as we pulled away, on the dash back into the Market place to find him I missed him, and then dashed up to the Lord Nelson in my search. By the time I returned to the Market Place, David had found Norman and Simon who thought he had missed us had found us. So it was 13.40 before we left Wantage. Five of us finally took part, including a new rider Vince Buckley, to whom a warm welcome is extended.

Because of the rain some of the surfaces were very wet and slippery so we made slow progress. After travelling along the Ridgeway to Blowing Stone Norman left us to go home I think he was so close to home at Uffington that his tea beckoned. The rest carried on stoically with some of us falling off several times, by the time we had returned to near Gramps Hill David had to leave to get home for an evening engagement so we were down to three.

We arrived back in Wantage at 6.30, some what bloodier and a lot muddier than when we left, but we all enjoyed a great ride with some wonderful views including rainbows and views over the Vale with crystal clear air. A sight I will not forget.

Jon

Thanks for lending the bike it was quite an eye opener!!!!
