Report upon Saturday Ride 2nd November 2002

We set off in the rain and finished in the rain, but we all seemed to enjoy the ride! Seven set off from Grove to try out one of next summers AUDAX rides. We tried out the 50k Dragon Hill run. We met up with Pat and Sue at Uffington and promptly went up Dragon Hill. Sue left me half way up the hill and drifted away. Really good for my ego!!!. I

Report:
The threat of rain may have discouraged riders, as only 6 of us set off from Wantage after having waved goodbye to Kevin F. before he went back to bed (looks like it's becoming a tradition on Sunday rides, Kevin!). We hurried for picking up Steve S. in Grove, straight back from Japan the night before and looking forward to a good snooze at the AGM!
Unlike last year we all arrived safely and on time for the start of the AGM, to which Steve Q. has also cycled but separately from us (now he has hands on the DA coffers, one can understand Steve is getting worried when riding with us - you never know what can happen on a dark night in a deserted lane somewhere around...).
Having left Pat behind with a puncture, we saw him already there when we turned up. That's what you get when you put a foreigner in the lead...
AGM and picnic lunch done and dusted, we came quietly back home through the flat (honest!) lanes of the Vale, and made it well on time for the traditional tea at the Museum, having enjoyed a dry ride which was a more than welcomed change from the recent weeks.

Report:
I needed to look twice just before the start before realising that all those riders awaiting to set off were not just hallucination from the previous night's party. 19 starters for a November Sunday ride, it's probably a safe bet to claim that we were not far from our record!
We were obviously not in fast nor hard mood though. Before starting it looked for a while as if Ginny would have to ride without saddle, but eventually the saddle agreed to stay on the seatpost. It was good also to see two riders on their first tarmac ride with us, well done Simon and Andrew.
Eventually we made a move for one of the few climbs of the day, just for ensuring that nobody gets cold. Horses along the lanes through the Vale were quite intringued by this multi-coloured peloton, into which the already legendary pink and purple was not the less visible! It all went so well that the leader started to fear to be too early at the pub, so went for a bit of an extra loop. Which could only result in that a puncture just happened. Nobody quite knows why it took 25 minutes to a seasoned squad of three hardened (male) bike mechanics to change a tube, but as you might expect hypotheses of all sorts were generously displayed (essentially by ladies, no I won't name anyone and particularly not you Mavis) at the square in Hanney where the rest of the troop waited for the rearguard trio to rejoin.
Continuing through Fyfield we made it on time to the Thatched Tavern in Appleton where, being lead by a Frenchman, riders could only enjoy kind of a French lunch. Jan and her brother Paul joined us also, but on four wheels. It was quarter to three when we set off again, and Boars Hill proved to be nothing more than a mere lump for so well fed riders. We then continued to Abingdon where, in best gentlemen style, Eve was escorted virtually back to her doorstep. She had obviously given some sign for dispersion, as we started to lose riders left, right and centre heading back to their respective homes.
Survivors merrily climbed up Steventon Hill, cut then the A417 on the back lane by Q-gardens and eventually finished through the slippery lanes of the Lockinge estate as the sun was slowly trying to set. Back to King Alfred's statue by about 5.15pm, some controversy about the mileage (yes Ginny I do believe we did 40 miles), and overall a pleasant dry day out.

Having been wet and miserable all day, it stopped raining in the early evening so Alan, Andrew, Laurent & I had a lovely moonlit ride, via Denchworth, Goosey & Fernham to the Chequers at Charney. We were joined there by 9 others, including Nick, Hilary & Steve B who had also cycled, good food, drink & company where enjoyed by all!

Report:
After all the recent rain, what better time (?) to refresh our memories of the bridleways and tracks of the Vale !! Pat (not one to be put off by a little water) took us to Faringdon by way of the Grove to Denchworth bridle(water?)way, Charney Bassett-Stanford and then from A417 to Sandhills. For the return we cycled out to Great Coxwell on the Coleshill Road and took the Darcy Dalton Way down to the A417 (good enough for a road bike) and then on to Longcot (not). From Fernham we cut across the fields until we reached the River Ock, 30 yards before the footbridge over it! There was no way round but through. And so we waded in up to our knees. (Neil, where were you!) One good way of cleaning a mud-encrusted bike. Not content, Pat led us from Baulking to Kingston-Lisle along the rail-side b'way as well. By now it was dark and with minimal lighting Nick, Martin and I just about negotiated the lanes from Westcot to Challow and then home while Pat headed up Blowingstone.
