Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:Chris Walters |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:70km ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-22km/h (13-14mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders.Not a hilly ride this month, but we will be making the most of our summer legs before they migrate South for the Winter! Heading out via Lains Barn to Wallingford, we'll have a tea stop at the ever-popular Waterfront Cafe in Benson. Return route via Dorchester, Long Wittenham and Steventon. |
||
Riders:Adrian WestChris Walters David Talboys Jo Munt John Tranter Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Maurice Bawden Phil Stubbings Richard Morris Richard Preece Ursula Hallam Riders = 12 Weather:Report:Welcome to Jo and Richard from Oxford City.Nothing much to report at the start. David forgot his drinks, Louis tried to beat his best heart rate on Lains Barn and then the Hendred dip, and we encountered some quite heavy traffic on the A417. The jury is out on whether to ride assertively as a group, which may annoy some motorists who think they might be able to get past if we rode in the gutter, or to encourage the same motorists to go past with no margin for error. Whichever approach is taken, it's clear that with a stream of oncoming traffic, passing cyclists is not particularly safe. Answers on a postcard please. On Wallingford Bridge, we had the worst bit of driving of the day, when two cars ran a red light, the first almost knocking Katherine off, and the second... well that doesn't bear thinking about. When will some motorists start giving a damn? Following that harrowing experience, some goodies at the Waterfront Cafe in Benson were in order. The return journey should have been slower (into the wind) but due to a few spirited turns on the front, we made really good progress, with a couple of obligatory dashes along from Steventon to Hanney, and also the internationally acclaimed Denchworth Dash. Well done everyone - a good paced ride from all! | ||

CTC Wallingford Cycle Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:1:30 pm |
Start Location:Wallingford Market Place |
Description:There is a new CTC group in Wallingford! To celebrate and mark the event, why not join us for an easy-paced sociable afternoon ride from Wallingford into the Vale with a tea and cake stop at Q-gardens, Milton Hill.The ride will start from Wallingford Market Place, just outside the Tourist Information Centre, promptly at 1:30pm. We'll head out via South Moreton and Aston Tirrold to the Hagbournes and Harwell village. After tea, we'll enjoy the descent of Steventon Hill and return to Wallingford via Drayton, Sutton Courtenay, the Wittenhams and Brightwell. There are a few climbs, but nothing too long or steep; some eay off-road, all taken at a sociable rather than sporty pace, about 11-12mph on the flat. (Thanks to CTC Wantage for hosting this page while the CTC Oxfordshire website is being redeveloped. There will be a CTC Wallingford website coming soon.) |

Riders:Brian HipwellChloe Tucker Guy Yeates Kerry Tucker Robin Tucker Ron Cutler Steve Swanton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Another beautiful day for a ride - that makes it six in a row for the Wallingford rides!16 out today including 5 new riders. We had a perfect mix of men, women, young and old. We followed the route pretty much as planned, although some didn't fancy the off-road section between the Hagbournes and took the road route instead. We sat outside enjoying the sunshine at Q-gardens - hard to believe it was really October. After tea, we enjoyed the fast descent of Steventon hill and then the late afternoon sunshine as we headed back through Drayton, Sutton Courtenay, and recently resurfaced NCN route 5 to Long Wittenham . The one major hill of the day was the climb from Little Wittenham up to the clumps car park. Everyone made it up and we were rewarded with the extensive views over the Vale. Then all too soon it was down to Brightwell and back into Wallingford just after 5pm. Once again a thoroughly sociable and enjoyable ride. Thanks everyone. CTC Wallingford now has its own website at www.ctcwallingford.org.uk and details of forthcoming rides should be appearing there from now on. | ||

Report:Up and over the Ridgeway tonight, working our way back via Lilley, Brightwalton Common and Farnborough Down. At least that's what the GPS track showed - if it wasn't for that I could have lied about where we went and my fellow riding companions would have been none the wiser, the route being new to both.Three little falls - one by me un-clipping the wrong foot when coming to a stop, and a couple by John due to cross-rutting (...getting his tyres stuck in two different ruts in the track, not a reference to deer!). A new record! Trails still dry and weather still holding out. Let's hope it stays like that for Wallingford next Tuesday. | ||

Report:The first ride run by CTC Wallingford for CTC Wallingford!Six of us riding, three Wallingford locals including ride leader and CTC Wallingford 'point of contact' Dan Hart. Three of us travelled from Grove (or Steventon in my case) to join them. We were lucky with the weather - a dry gap among days of rain. Dan picked a great route including the Grim's Ditch singletrack - one of the best sections around. Payback came later with 3 punctures just after collecting lots of mud in a field. Two of them for David B. (And when i got home, I found a thorn sticking in my front tyre holding the air in). Wallingford has some great trails nearby - more singletrack to compare with the broader trails and Ridgeway near Wantage. So we might make this a regular monthly pilgrimage. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:80-100km all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, riding pace 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.Southwards to Ludgershall and back. A hilly 100km. Out from Wantage and up Manor Hill and along the A338 with its fabulous descent to Great Shefford, along the Lambourn valley to Welford and Kintbury. Then the fantastic ascent of Walbury Hill, one of the best climbs in the area, and the lovely country lanes through Combe, Linkenholt and Vernham Dean (including a rare, for southern England, hairpin bend!). The autumn colours should be showing but beware of wet leaves on the roads! Nb. If we are having major issues or the weather is really bad we can cut across via Oxenwood to Hungerford for lunch from Vernham Dean. We'll aim to take lunch at the Queen's Head in Ludgershall which has a range of bar meals available on Sundays. Failing that there is a café in Tidworth we can go to (I've drawn that on the route below but that won't be my 1st choice). The route back is past Wilton Windmill and through Great Bedwyn close to the Kennet & Avon Canal. We'll aim to stop for tea and cake at Azuza in Hungerford. A choice of routes from here depending on the time, either straight down the A338 back via Great Shefford to Wantage or a slightly longer but quieter route to East Garston before Great Shefford. Just for variation the mapped route goes back to Wantage via Farnborough and Chain Hill. If we do the route I plan it'll be a whisker over 100km but with several options to make it shorter if we need to. There's no doubting that this is a pretty hilly route with over 1000m of climbing so be prepared for that. At this time of year its sensible to have lights on your bike in case of late delays or poor light but I anticipate finishing in daylight. If it's wet, for the comfort of your fellow riders (and to avoid annoying lunch/tea stops!), some form of mudguards should be considered. |
||
Report:This ride is forever to be known as "The Wet One".Four riders gathered in the gloom at Wantage, John Tranter only had time for a short ride so joined us as far as Welford, a few spots of rain but nothing as bad as an hour earlier. Manor Hill was as hard as ever and we couldn't really enjoy the descent due to a strong headwind. We met up with David and Ursula in Great Shefford and headed to Welford avoiding huge puddles. Uneventful ride to Kintbury where Nicole Pethybridge was waiting for us, unfortunately she wasn't feeling too good and only stayed with us for a few km. The hills came thick and fast, Walbury, Linkenholt, Conholt the main three before lunch. We were well sheltered so the wind wasn't a big problem, there was a lot of debris washed onto the roads so descents had to be taken carefully. Lunch was taken at the Queen's Head in Ludgershall, very nice home made food. Lyn had suffered a puncture just before so he ordered his food and repaired that. As we ate the heaven's opened, absolutely torrential rain. We decided to hang on for a few minutes to let it pass(!) We had to go at some point though and it started to ease off so we went for it. It didn't ease off for long, it basically hammered it down. So much for short showers. At least we had a nice tailwind to blow us along. The pace quickened substantially and it became a heads down ride to Great Bedwyn where the rain got even worse. We were all soaked through but it wasn't too cold. We had to cycle through some large floods and the roads were rivers, as we cycled alongside the canal it was hard to tell which was the road! We made it to Hungerford where David and Ursula headed home. We didn't stop for tea as it would have been miserable to stop and have to get going again. Lyn, Andy and I went the direct route along the A338 back to Wantage, Lyn was quicker than us two so he went for it back home. Andy and I tag-teamed through Great Shefford and back to Wantage. The rain hadn't eased at all and we were both starting to get cold. Andy pealed off home in Wantage leaving me as the only finisher back in the Market Place! Definitely a ride of two halves, before lunch we had a lovely ride along the Berkshire and Wiltshire lanes. After lunch was a complete washout! | ||

Report:Well, it wasn't raining when we started...But, as we climbed by Goddard's Brook, it started and it was soon coming down in bucketloads, with thunder and lightning - very very frightening. We went past the gallops and made it into the woods just short of the Ridgeway top, but the trees in autumn weren't providing much shelter so we decided to head back down by the shortest route. This was a bit like being in a car wash, but we got down to Lockinge and made our way back to Grove. Squelching. And grinning ! | ||

Sometimes, by agreement on the night, we might go a bit further. Bright lights are required for off-road riding in the dark, and a rear light for getting home. I have 2 spare ones that I can lend so you can see if you like it before buying your own. Contact me so I know to bring them. Dark, cold and wet – we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
