3* Saturday Half Day Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Monday before the ride. Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.Following the earlier May Day madness, this is a more normal 3* half day ride. over Hackpen Hill and down to Lambourn, along the lovely river valley to East Garston for a cafe stop at the wonderful Priscilla's Kitchen, then down to Great Shefford, up the big ramp to Chaddleworth and home via Brightwalton and down Chain Hill. A short but fairly hilly 30 miles and we should be home by 12.30. |
||
Report:It was a helpful coincidence that the six riders booked for this ride had also chosen to do the earlier Oxford ride. This made the timings a bit less critical. Mind you, this also marked them out as especially bonkers given that we were going to add 30 hilly miles to the 45 already done (it has to be said that the top prize for bonkers-ness went, as it so often does, to Jan who decided to carry on in the afternoon and notch up a century).After the between-rides cafe stop at Costa in Grove, our departure was held up by a puncture for me before we even got to Wantage. All fixed and we set off again. All went smoothly and it was impressive how well everyone was going after the earlier endeavours. A great spread at Priscilla's Kitchen fuelled us up for the big ramp to Chaddleworth and we just about dodged the rain clouds before the swoop down Chain Hill. Thanks to all for a sterling effort taking us to 75 miles before lunch! | ||

May Day sunrise special Oxford ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:5:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This year May Day falls on a Saturday and it feels sad that the ancient Oxford tradition of the choir singing at sunrise from the tower of Magdalen College can't take place. So I have come up with the slightly bonkers idea of putting on a May Day sunrise ride to Oxford and back. The bad news is - it starts at 5.30. The good news is this means we can catch the wonderful early morning light on the river and the ancient buildings of Oxford.We head out to Fyfield, under the Tubney tunnel and across to Sunningwell before joining the river by Kennington for a lovely route into town past the College boathouses with views across Christ Church Meadow. Then we will take a look at some of the best buildings Oxford has to offer (including my own St Cross College) before heading out of town again to Wolvercote for a big loop around Port Meadow. Finally we conquer Cumnor Hill and head for home. It is just over 40 miles and my plan is to be back in Grove by 9. For many of you, that will be enough for one day, but some of you may be mad enough to join me at 9.30 for the regular 3* ride! Costa in Grove will be open for either post-ride or between-ride refreshments and facilities. This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Monday before the ride. |
||
Riders:Chris BaileyClare Hazell James Bosley Jan McCabe Jo Little John Tranter Lisa Footner Lizzie Hardingham Sharon Bedford Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 10 Weather:Report:It was amazing that 10 of us were mad enough to think this was a good idea! Many thanks to Jo for leading a second group on the road, although we kept each other in sight and were able to gather a bit closer for photo opportunities and tour guide moments.There was frost on the ground as we set off, but we were rewarded as a result with the most glorious sunrise in a clear sky. We made good time over towards Oxford and enjoyed the really nice path from Kennington to the river. There was mist on the water as we headed into town along the towpath and it was a personal delight to see the Wolfson/St Cross ladies eight boat training on the river. The centre of town was eerily quiet but the buildings were glowing in the low light and it all looked very magical. Tourist moments over, we headed around Port Meadow, conquered Cumnor Hill and made good time back to Grove. Thanks to everyone for being there at such a crazy start time and for wonderful company. A thoroughly enjoyable ride! | ||

Report:I always like the routes that take us north of the A420 - apart from the issue of actually crossing that road of course. As ride leader I had failed to check properly that I know which was the correct turning to take to go round Hinton Waldrist village (although others in the group knew it). As the other 2* group caught us up near there we were able to simply follow them for a short stretch.It had been a very windy day and we anticipated being blown around. In the end the wind died down and wasn't really a problem. On our way out we could see a couple of patches of cloud and rain in the middle distance but fortunately we never encountered these and had a dry ride. The low sun on the way back, particularly on the gentle downhill from Gainfield to Charney Bassett, shed some lovely light over the surround countryside, | ||

Report:An interesting ride tonight which the ride leader was a little nervous of as we had hail less than 1 hour before the ride commenced. Following a scavenger hunt for car keys left on a roof for fun before departing, it was a snappy pace with the wind at our backs for a change. A bit more like a winter ride tonight with wind gusts which were tricky from time to time. Navigating through the busy bumpy road leading to Abingdon was all good. As we made our way along the back half of the route, the wind changed so we enjoyed a head wind for the remainder of the ride. Was very happy to have an alternate option to take the bypass under the A420 - thanks Roger! Once arriving back at OMH, the temperature was dropping fast which I clocked at 8 degrees, so most departed rather swiftly. Thanks to all the riders for playing find the keys tonight. | ||

Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.Route below, a nice straightforward cycle up White Horse Hill, this will involve waiting at the top for me to arrive |
||
Report:With a stiff headwind, 5 of us ploughed our way to White Horse Hill. Commending all the patient drivers on a particularly busy Springline road to Childrey, it was a relief to find quieter routes.As we all agreed the wind was not going to prevent us climbing the Hill and turned for the climb, the rain started and gradually became hail before some of us reached Dragon Hill. The wind made it's presence felt at times but before long we arrived at an empty carpark and fantastic views of the weather. The hail return as we made for the downward leg- very painful . Not long before we were entering Uffington (minding the adult electric scooters as the whizzed past us). With a glorious tailwind we made short work of the return. We all peeled off from Grove onwards, eager to get home for a warm-up after the bitter cold - quite ridiculous for this time of year! Great group to be out with | ||

Tuesday Evening Off Road Ride (Gentle) | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:We'll be taking it easy tonight to give people a chance to get some off-road experience as the nights get longer.We'll head up Goddards Brook, the least painful way to the Ridgeway, and pause a few times to admire the view. Then we'll head east to enjoy some woody singletrack, and return making use of the new Icknield Way. This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Wednesday before the ride. Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and reasonable lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
||
Report:Our first 'Gentle' ride of the season and reaching a full complement of 6, despite a couple of regulars not making it. I think we'll do this again every First Tuesday of the month and see how it goes.Despite being an easier paced ride, we still like to get up to the Ridgeway, so we took the most relaxed way up: out of Wantage via the cyclepath and up in two bites, by Knights' Farm / Goddards Brook and Bitham Woods. We then had a gentle tail wind to push us along the ridge to Scutchamer Knob. There we saw a glorious rainbow! Down to the corner of Harwell campus, which allows people to pick their own pace, from fast to measured. Then round the 'Harwell edge' woods and back along the new Icknield Greenway, tut tutting at the low-friction surface. Despite rain in the day, the ride was dry and we avoided almost all mud, and didn't really need lights except as a safety precaution coming back in to Wantage. As a final treat a few of us headed for the garden of Kings Arms and sunk a post ride pint. The first for many many months! | ||

There will be two small(ish) hills and a stretch on the A417. |
||
Report:The rain stopped just as we left Old Mill Hall and never returned (the sun always shines on the righteous?) We had a very good social ride with me leading from the middle and the front talking to everyone! The scenery at this time of the year is outstanding so we all took it in as we rode. We finally arrived at Faringdon Market Square where the Coffee House is and we all enjoyed our coffee and cake sat by the Portwell. I told everyone the basic changes in Faringdon over the last 70 years (I am full of worthless info!) We rode back at a very steady pace with only one incident when David's chain came off - no problem! Thank you very much one and all and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. | ||

Riders:David JacksonDes Higgs Diana Whidborne Jan McCabe John Tranter Karl Blake LeeAnn Norris Roger Postbeschild Sarah Lewis Stephanie Haddrell Steve Swanton Riders = 11 Report:Due to inclement weather forecast for Saturday the ride was changed to Sunday, a verry sensible suggestion from Steve S, thanks! We stayed dry and were able to accommodate more riders on Sunday so a win win situation.We rode as two separate groups, maintaining social distance. Thanks to John Tranter for leading the second group, which fairly early on became the first group as Steph had a puncture, just after Frilford Heath. Thank you to Des, Karl and David for coming to the rescue as it was a seriously damaged tyre and inner tube. I was very supportive( Ha ha) and Di and Sarah did a sterling job of keeping Morale high! Thanks to all for their patience. John's group of Lee Ann< Steve Jan and Roger took the opportunity to press on which was a bonus as they were hot on our heels from the outset. The weather throughout was cloudy but warm and at times a little breezy but considerably more pleasant than Saturday. The company was excellent and it was a real pleasure to be out with a group of friends. The pathway from Radley Lakes to Abbey meadow is very scenic and wasn't too busy; if a little muddy in the early stages, sorry Des if you had to go home and clean your bike! Sarah did very well coping with a chain situation, with an audience just at the busiest part of the ride in Abbey meadow- well done! It was lovely to catch up with John's group in the town square at Abingdon and the staff at Throwing Buns cafe were most welcoming and the cakes amazing. Riding back along the river and via the cycle path was a pleasure and the ride back was without incident. On our return we were all treated to some amazing brownies courtesy of Des's lovely wife Chris I think it was a unanimous 10 all round. Thanks Chrisx | ||

Report:It was a soggy beginning with a group of dedicated riders. One slight miscue by the fledgling ride leader which was quickly corrected by a supportive group. We made the decision to ride out the full route but did make some changes to lessen the amount of time on the busy A338. A route with lots of variety and some lovely views through peaceful villages. Report:Full turnout of riders despite the heavy rain that fell in the hour before we started. A bit drizzly on our first climb (up court hill) but we were rewarded by a rainbow at the top. After that we stayed mostly dry - apart from the spray off the wet roads.Going up onto the downs is always worthwhile for the views and tonight was no exception. We found some nice quiet lanes and caught glimpses of bluebells in the woods. As well as the first part of the ride being the hilliest there was also a stiff headwind. However this meant we had a tailwind on the way back so the descent of Chain Hill was a joy. Thanks to the group for being very easy to lead - on what was my first outing as a ride leader. | ||

||
Report:What a lovely ride. Undeterred by light rain as our small group gathered at OMH, we were rewarded with a mostly dry ride amid all the showers. By the time we reached the Nelson the first shower had passed and we were able to enjoy the lusciously fresh, green, tree-lined corridor that is the NCN route 544 that climbs steadily through Lockinge and Betterton to Ginge. After a brief stop, we continue to the top of the climb before the long descent into West Hendred. A short stretch of downhill on the A417 into the Hendred dip brought us into East Hendred. We were soon parking up outside the villages stores and post office. We were warmly welcomed, the service of hot drinks and fresh bakes went smoothly and we were able to sit outside on a picnic bench and enjoy a natter.It started to spit with rain towards the end of our break and then more heavily as we climbed out of the village. But by the time we had reached the Icknield Greenway, the shower had passed and it remained dry for the rest of the ride, with even the odd glimpse of brightness through the clouds. The general concensus on the track surface was "not too bad", although the quicker the fine loose gravel across most of the surface is removed, the better to avoid rutting and potholing along the narrow, cleared tracks . For those who hadn't used the bridge over Ginge brook before, the sharp climb out of the gully on the Wantage side came as a bit of a surprise (despite warnings to keep in low gear). Noticeably, a muddy short-cut is already developing across the zig-zag climb to avoid a tree where riders (such as me) have come across the bridge slightly too quickly. Something the county engineers need to be made aware of. Apart from the stony descent to the bridge, the worst part of the route was the un-remade public road into Ardington. We eased our way up to the Lains Barn cross-roads and enjoyed the long descent down into the Vale. Back in Grove by 12:20, we continued chatting for a while before heading our separate ways. Thanks all for your company. Great to catch-up with Di, Des and Karl. Hoping for similar fortune with the weather tomorrow. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Wantage Market Place |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Monday before the ride. All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.WEATHER UPDATE 15 May: The weather is not looking promising for Sunday and we will take a final decision on the ride by 8.30 on Sunday morning. If the weather is wet but rideable, our current Plan B is to do a half day ride with one stop (either Coleshill or Stanford-in-the-Vale) that has plenty of places we can quickly return to Wantage from, see: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36038877 Hopefully there will be no need to cancel the ride altogether. NB ride updated on 9/5/21: A relatively flat, 100km all day ride. Along the Springline and out to Highworth before taking some lovely roads (and almost roads) to Fairford. An early stop for takeaway from Lynwood before heading up to pretty villages before making our way back via Aston Pottery for a second stop and thence to Wantage. Expect to be back mid-afternoon. |

Report:Well were we lucky with the weather today! Having had backup plans for a shorter ride or cancelling due to the wet forecast, we got away with a bit of light drizzle in the morning and a couple of heavy showers in the afternoon. ResultBeautiful part of the country; really good food from Lynwood Fairford; a chance to catch up with some of the second 3* group and a great bunch of riders on our group: you really are living the dream as leader on such a ride. Oh and someone spotting I had dropped one of my spare gloves that Andy then went and retrieved for me. Luck was definitely with us today | ||

Report:After watching the weather forecast over the last few days and, at one time, being doubtful that we would even get to ride at all it was great to wake up to blue sky and sunshine. We had a couple of showers during the ride, but otherwise good weather.The scenery was beautiful - thank you Kath for the route. It was a good tempered group throughout the ride and it was great to catch up with some people I hadn't seen for ages. It was also good to get the first 100k ride in for this year (for me at least). Thank you everyone for being such a good group to ride with. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride (2* from Grove) | 2* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:9:30 am |

Description:This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Monday before the ride.Based on the route of Kath's 3* ride starting from Wantage at the same time, here is a 2* alternative, for those who would enjoy a full-days riding but at a steadier, 2* pace (11-13mph). With a few route tweaks to start from Grove, this is a 100km ride with a few ups and downs (but no major challenges), taking in some of the prettiest villages and quiet lanes through the Cotswolds. We'll have an early lunchtime stop in Fairford with takeaways available at the Lynwood Cafe and a second stop at Aston Pottery on the way home. Expect to be back in Grove around 4:30pm. WEATHER UPDATE 15 May: The weather is not looking promising for Sunday and we will take a final decision on the ride by 8.30 on Sunday morning. If the weather is wet but rideable, Plan B for the 2* ride is to do a half-day ride following the planned route towards Highworth then turning back for a stop at Coleshill. The route also provides options to return to Grove earlier. Hopefully there will be no need to cancel the ride altogether. Fingers crossed! |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Wednesday before the ride.Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:Well that was fun ! Despite all the recent rain and a multitude of puddles our intrepid band completed the route as planned. It was a little slippery in places along the bridleway from East Hendred Upper Mill. But we all made it through without incident just before a sharp shower caught up with us. The track from West Hendred to Denchworth was at its smoothest for a while and we stopped to admire the panorama from the top of the rise. It really does feel like being in the middle of nowhere. Welcome back Paul and thanks everyone for being so game. | ||

Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Lambourn Car Park |
Description:This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Monday before the ride. All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.In the spirit of some previous 5th Saturday Specials I propose to start this ride from a slightly different location - Lambourn. There is free parking in the car park just off the high street This will allow us to do a ride to the south taking in one of my favourites routes - The Chute Causeway. As it is quite a hilly ride and still early in the season the ride will be about 74k. There are a couple of steep hills but, as ever, everyone can go at their own pace and there are good views from the top. I thought we would stop after about 51k in Great Bedwyn. There is a cafe there (Wendy's) which comes highly recommended assuming it opens as planned on 17th May , (there is outdoor seating). If not I will explore other options - before Covid the local shop did takeaway snacks (I will call them nearer the time if need be to confirm) or there is lots of green space for a picnic if people prefer to bring their own lunch. If all else fails we can go on another 15k to Hungerford where there are lots of cafe options. Will update later. Plan to be back to Lambourn by mid afternoon at the latest. |
||
Report:As there were just three of us for this ride we decided to extend it and start from Letcombe Regis instead. Resulted in approx. another 25k and (according to John's Garmin) 7 hills rather than 5. Being closest to the start my mileage was 99k - so had to do a little circuit just to get to three figures - but John and Chris cleared 100k easily!.Its always nice to venture south for a change, especially to the less visited area south of Hungerford. We all enjoyed Chute Causeway with its lovely views, (photo courtesy of John). Wendy's in Great Bedwyn was a new stop for me (albeit that it came recommended), and would go there again. Small community cafe with friendly service and lots of outdoor seating. All in all a lovely ride. | ||

It was a relief to turn off onto Circourt Road and the quieter lanes. The lanes were delightfully green and white, but there was a lot of pollen in the air from the cow parsley in the verges, the hawthorn in full flower and the oil seed rape making for a few runny noses! Despite a headwind as we rode eastwards we enjoyed a relaxed 2* pace across Cow Common to Steventon. Up Steventon Hill and along Featherbed Lane to the tranquility of East Hendred and as we climbed up towards the Icknield Greenway the sun finally broke through. The last few miles from Ginge through Lockinge and back to Wantage were delightful with the sun and wind on our backs and the pretty scenery to enjoy. We arrived back in the Market Place at 12 and all stayed for a coffee, snack and natter at Marmalade, sitting in the sunshine. Thanks all for your company for an enjoyable morning.
