Oxford Special sunrise May Day ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:5:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This year May Day fortuitously falls on the Bank Holiday Monday and the ancient Oxford tradition of the choir singing at sunrise from the tower of Magdalen College is happening. So I am repeating our now traditional slightly bonkers May Day sunrise ride to Oxford and back. The bad news is - it starts at 5.30. The good news is this means we can catch the wonderful early morning light on the river and the ancient buildings of Oxford, as well as hopefully getting at least some sense of the occasion. I can't guarantee that we will be able to get anywhere near the Magdalen tower - I suspect the whole city will be going crazy - but it should be an adventure!We head out to Fyfield, under the Tubney tunnel and across to Sunningwell before joining the river by Kennington for a lovely route into town past the College boathouses with views across Christ Church Meadow. Then we will take a look at some of the best buildings Oxford has to offer (including my own St Cross College) before heading out of town again to Wolvercote for a big loop around Port Meadow. Finally we conquer Cumnor Hill and head for home. It is just over 40 miles and my plan is to be back in Grove by just after 9. Costa in Grove will be open for post-ride refreshments and facilities. Please let me know in advance if you are joining the ride. |

Riders:Chris BaileyEddie Little Jo Little John Tranter Lucia Singer Malcolm Heavens Richard Saunders Sally Bensoussis Sarah Bowen Sharon Bedford Riders = 10 Weather:Report:What a wonderful ride! Not quite the perfect weather as it was a bit cloudy so we didn't really see the sun rise, but nice enough to be pleasant. A really interesting group turned out - apparently mad enough not to be put off by the 05.30 start time. A particular welcome to Lucia and Richard back with us after a few years gap and to Malcolm on his longest ride with us so far. All went according to plan as we made good time over to Kennington and the glorious river path alongside the boat houses and eventually across from Christ Church Meadow as we caught a glimpse of Magdalen Tower. The streets of Oxford were as chaotic as expected - particularly crowded around any pub or any morris dancers! All good fun though as we headed out of town along the Oxford Canal towpath to Wolvercote. Cumnor Hill was suitably conquered and we headed for home.Thanks to all for great company and a glorious ride. | ||

Riders:Anke OttoCarin Tranter Diana Whidborne Karl Blake Martyn Wigmore Michael Tayler Tim Waite Riders = 7 Report:We set off altogether but unfortunately Karl had to stop due to a bike malfunction - he had to pull out of the ride. A very interesting route out to Denchworth and then along to the main road via Challow Marsh. We went along the A417 and then into West Challow. We took the track up to Childrey and then along the next track back to East Challow, which was full of big holes but at least they were not full of water. Anke left us at West Challow as this was her home ( she had already ridden out to Grove from West Challow originally). We came down through the estate and turned left back onto the A417, past the village hall and onto the canal tow path to Grove. A very interestingly different ride. Enjoyed by all. | ||

A particular welcome to Gillie on her first ride with us. It was also great to welcome back Clare fresh from her smashing the London Marathon a few days ago.With thanks to Steve S for leading the second group, we followed a nice mellow route around the north of the Vale, with the highlight being a little detour to the stunning church, pond and manor house at the back of Longworth. We also took in the bridleway from there along the edge of the Thames Valley ridge into beautiful Hinton Waldrist. Narrowly resisting the temptation to drop down to Duxford for a Thames swim, we headed for home as the sun began to set, at one point giving an owl a race along the hedgerow. A really lovely ride in great company. | ||

||
Report:Well, this was very much a variable feast, originally planned as a Saturday 3 star, I amended it to a 2 star in view of the booked 3 star for Bank Holiday Monday.Saturday was distinctly wet so I opted to move to Sunday, which proved to be delightful, warm, sunny and light winds. Monday's ride was postponed due to another wet forecast so this was the only show in town. I was somewhat surprised, under the circumstances, to only attract Des and Barry. Aston Pottery was the quietest I have ever seen it on a Sunday - the roads were similarly quiet. The pace was set by the riders - a strong 3 star in the end! | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:Old Mill Hall |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. UPDATE 8 May: Weather forecast is not looking good, with heavy rain forecast this evening and possible thunderstorms tomorrow. Please keep an eye out here or club Facebook page in case of cancellation.Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. 1.5-2 hour ride at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph) A circuit north-eastwards to Garford, Marcham and Fyfield, returning via Charney Basssett. The only climb of any real note is on a short stretch of the A338 from Garford to the Frilford traffic lights. We'll make use of a cunning tunnel under the A420 to reach Fyfield. The nights are getting longer and we should be back in Grove well before sunset, but lights are still recommended in case of any delays. |
||
Report:Thunderstorms were forecast and there were heavy showers all around during the afternoon but not in Grove. So something of a ride leader's nightmare to know whether to cancel or not? And then at 6:05 it started to rain... Fortunately, this turned out to be a relatively short-lived shower and, despite the grey skies, we met at OMH in the dry. 4 others were willing to join me to brave the vagaries of the weather on the 2* ride.There were some big puddles about and water-filled potholes to avoid, so a change of route was in order, avoiding the A-roads through Frilford and Marcham. Out through Denchworth to West Hanney, we could see dark clouds and heavy showers to our right but we stayed dry. We headed away from the showers to Fyfield and continued on to Netherton. As we joined the Appleton to Longworth Road we witnessed a bizarre impatient overtaking manoeuvre; the car was driven onto the verge, sunk into the mud and ploughed it up (mud everywhere!) and its underframe ground on the road edge as the driver tried to regain the road. Grrrrrrr! Fortunately, nothing worse. As we reached Longworth it finally started to rain, relatively gently at first and then more steadily (but not hard) as we turned down Lodge Lane towards the A420. After a remarkably clear crossing, we continued on the lovely gentle downhill to Charney Bassett then pressed on home, arriving back in Grove just after 8pm. It was satisfying to have been out and not as wet as we might have feared. Thanks to my companions for making it an enjoyable ride to lead. | ||

New Forest Weekend day 1 | 3* |
---|
Leader:Jo Little |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Lyndhurst |
Description:A repeat of a succesful weekend away last year - let's hope the weather is a bit drier than it was on the Sunday!This is day 1 of a two day visit to the New Forest. We are making it a weekend away and are staying in Lyndhurst from Friday to Sunday. We usually all meet up Friday evening for a meal at La Pergola, which is close to the ride starting point. It would be possible, however, to travel down early on Saturday and just treat it as a day ride. The ride starts in Lyndhurst and visits Lepe and Beaulieau then skirts past Brockenhurst and along the ornamental drives then loops back round past Cadnum to Lyndhurst. The ride covers a good variety of the beautiful New Forest countryside. Please note the New Forest is not flat! Although there are no really steep hills, there will be continuous climbing throughout the day. We will have a cafe stop in Beaulieu at The Old Bakehouse Tea Rooms and then a lunch stop at The Royal Oak in Fritham. We can then all meet up for an evening meal in Lyndhurst at La Pergola, an Italian restaurant near the starting place, which we will book beforehand. The starting place for both days is the Bolton's Bench car park on the B3056 Lyndhurst to Beaulieu road. When approaching from Lyndhurst village (on the A35 Southampton Road) the B3056 is on the right hand side, opposite the fire station. The car park is immediately on the left. La Pergola is on the A35 just a bit further on, on the left hand side. It has a large car park. Lyndhurst has several small hotels, including the Ormonde House Hotel and The Penny Farthing. There are also some B&B's. We have booked The Ormonde House Hotel for when we stay in May, and can highly recommend it as they are very friendly and helpful, but the area is popular so it would be best to book quickly. We are limiting both days to 12 riders, as any more is too much on these roads and will split into 2 groups for ease of riding. Please contact Jo if you would like to put your name down. I will set up a Whatsapp group to help co-ordinate everything nearer the time. I have contact details for nearly everyone but please could you ensure you have downloaded Whatsapp onto your phone. |

Delicious food and enormous portions hopefully setting us up for the next day.Saturday started off a bit cloudy but the sun soon burnt through and it turned into a wonderful sunny and warm day. We split into two groups but were able to keep close together for much of the time. Thanks to Eddie for leading the second group. We followed the same route as last year, enjoying the mix of the sea, the forest and the heathland; with a cafe stop in Beaulieu and then a lunch stop at Fritham. There were plenty of ponies, foals, donkeys, goats, sheep and pigs to enjoy on the way round. The scenery as always was great and everyone enjoyed the day's ride. We finished back at Lyndhurst with an icecream and then met up later for another great Italian meal. Thank you to everyone for being such a great group to ride with and a special thanks to Joy, Peter and Richard who helped Ed and I by taking the lead into a tough headwind. It was also good to meet Barry's friend Paul who came to cycle with us and Lee Ann's husband, Mike, who enjoyed some off roading over the weekend. | ||

2* Saturday Morning Ride to the Lambourn Valley | 2* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Old Mill Hall |
Description:It's a while since we have been south on a weekend 2*. So a visit to the Lambourn valley seems in order, with refreshments at Saddleback Farm Shop cafe on the way home. As Saddleback is quite late in the ride, we'll have a short stop for snacks along the way (possibly in Eastbury). A few hills to conquer (which we'll take steadily - there's no rush!) but our rewards will be great views and the lovely long descent of Chain Hill to enjoy at the end.Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). |
||
Report:A select group of 5 for our first venture into West Berkshire on a Saturday 2* in a long time. It was one of those cooler Spring days that, with the sun stubbornly hiding behind overcast skies, never quite warmed up. However, our legs certainly did as we ascended first through the Letcombes and Holborn Hill, and then up Hackpen. We each climbed at our own pace, aided by a tailwind, and regrouped at the top. There were cloudy views across the vale but as we descended towards Lambourn it became lush, green and delightfully atmospheric.After the lovely long descent we rolled through Lambourn and continued to Eastbury, where we turned off the main road, crossed the river Lambourn and stopped by the church for a short snack stop. Back on our bikes, we rejoined the the valley road, which was pleasantly quiet. We made a scenic detour through East Garston and continued through Great Shefford, Weston and Welford to Boxford. Here we turned northwards, to wend our way gradually back up the Downs. We turned off at Nodmore Corner and continued to Brightwalton, emerging at the top to the fine view across to Farnborough church. The short descent on the B4494 to California Farm gave a welcome respite to tiring legs and we were soon ensconced in the Honesty Cafe at the farm shop. As it was lunchtime, Lorna and I decided to order soup and a baked spud respectively, without noticing the line of order tabs already in waiting... Big mistake! Thanks to Dave , Des and John for your patience while we waited 35 minutes to be served. Eventually, we were able to resume, climbing again on the back road to Farnborough - not easy on cold and weary legs. We were into a headwind now as we rejoined the B-road for the return to Wantage, but we were soon enjoying the descents of Chain Hill into town. Back in Grove at 2:30pm, rather later than planned, but satisfied after a thoroughly enjoyable ride. A pleasure to lead today with an easy-going and amiable group. Thanks to all. | ||

Description:Day 2 of the New Forest weekend.Once we have breakfasted we will meet up for a half day ride, again starting at Bolton's Bench car park in Lyndhurst. This time we'll approach Beaulieu from a different direction and then go across the Heath to Brockenhurst and towards Burley, where we'll have a cafe stop, before re-visiting Bolderwood Ornamental drive and then returning to Lyndhurst. The ride should finish about 12.30pm, allowing plenty of time to return home before the rush hour (hopefully!). Today's ride is lumpier than yesterdays. There are no big climbs but it is a fairly constant up and down for much of the ride. 36 miles |

We are keen to welcome new riders and can make recommendations or have spare lights to borrow if you let us know. Dark, cold and wet - we’ll ride in any two. Report:Such a beautiful evening and we decided to explore the 'Bluebell woods' to the south of the Ridgeway.... and then it escalated a bit... until we found ourselves getting almost, but not quite to Chieveley. We then found a 'well-horsed' track to push for a bit in the mud until a much better fieldside option was discovered, and we turned the corner and headed back north via Leckhampstead and Brightwalton (twice). A great 24 miles after which your author was feeling nicely prepared for the Cotswold Audax the following day! | ||

Away ride from Hungerford | 3* |

Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Hungerford Train Station |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders.Ride moved from 8th May due to weather. To be able to explore the more southern routes without getting over two ridges first, the plan is to start at Hungerford Train Station Car Park at 9.30am. Should be plenty of parking on a Sunday, (and according to the website costs £2.10). Ride is about 50 miles (80k) with a cafe stop in Marlborough at about 30 miles (50k). |
||
Riders:Barry StantonJohn Tranter Joy Arthur Karen Townsin LeeAnn Norris Nicole Pethybridge Sharon Bedford Yvonne Bird Riders = 8 Report:Starting from Hungerford allowed us to explore further west than we normally do on a day ride. We tried some new roads (for me anyway) which were spectacular in places with some great views. Suddenly Spring has arrived out of nowhere and the countryside looked glorious in the sunshine.Sadly some of the roads were not quite so glorious and were somewhat treacherous in places with potholes and gravel. The Food Gallery Cafe in Marlborough has now started opening on Sundays again so we opted to stop there. Luckily we seemed to hit a lull (between brunch and lunch!) and we were generally served efficiently and by friendly staff. Will definitely be adding it back onto the "good places to stop on a bike ride" list. Whilst the ride was circa 80k - and hence a little bit shorter than some of our full day rides - it was rarely flat with lots and ups and downs (climbing being circa 900m or 950m depending upon who's Garmin reading you believe!). Thanks to everyone for being a great group and for exploring a new area with me. WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY TO BE CYCLING | ||

Report:Lots of people with excuses tonight, but the two of us out found the weather a perfect sunny evening and the puddles mostly dired up.We went up Goddards and down opposite Betterton to Lands End and up into Bluebell Woods again, but this time at the end continued and turned left on the track that heads to East Ilsley. We didn't go that far though, dropping down 'Twisty Gnarly' which was actually in finer riding condition than I've known for about 5 years, apart from being a bit grassy on the bottom. Then climb up back the The Ridgeway, with fine views of the rolling fields (and A34!) before heading west, into the setting sun and down for a great descent at Ginge. | ||

Description:The Hanney Explorer (10 miles). Another Tuesday evening classic this week as we head for the Hanneys to explore some of their hidden (and picturesque) corners and then use a couple sections of bridleway to bring us back to Denchworth. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph).Slightly longer than usual at 61km but pretty flat - Buckland Hill is the only climb of note. Late coffee/ early lunch stop at Aston Pottery. This is a re-run of the ride enjoyed by just three of us just after the Coronation - at more like 2 star pace this time! |
||
Report:More or less a re-run of the post Coronation ride, with a small diversion where we went through West Hanney. I can report that the chippings have had a top dressing of tar and the village is sporting new 20 mph signs all over the place.We mostly had courteous drivers until, when climbing Buckland Hill, a woman driving a silver mk2 Focus decided to try and shove me off the road. I hope that the driver is not reading this report as I find it hard to believe that she is a cyclist. Two firm thumps on the side of the car from yours truly may well have left some dents but I did manage (just) to stay on the road. She drove off. I suppose I should own up to another ride posted as two star being ridden at three star pace...... | ||

We went out to East Hendred via the Icknield Greenway, then everyone took the challenge to take the grassy climb up to the Ridgeway. The entire group breezed up it, part from the leader who messed up her gears (new bike is my feeble excuse .) Then it was the glorious/terrifying descent down Happy Valley before another climb up into bluebell woods. A short section of nettles (sorry), then a longish road section to hit the Ridgeway again. A final descent down Goddard's and we were back in Wantage with a few of us taking coffee At Marmalade and meeting up with Corallian riders in the Market Place. Everyone was smiling at the end. Kudos to Elle and Sharon for reasons; big thanks to Yvonne and Robin; and cheers to everyone, it was great fun . | ||
