Weather:

Report:
A beautiful sunny day, but the chilly north wind made us want to keep moving, apart from brief pauses at the usual 1* stopping-places - by the walnut tree in Denchworth, by the green in Charney Bassett and at Gainfield - to check everyone was OK. Cycling in two groups of four made it easier for cars to pass. Stanford's cosy coffee shop provided a warm welcome, as usual, and we were joined by the 2* riders there. Return via Park Lane, Asti Equestrian and Denchworth. (9 riders, in two groups of 4? We had a change of personnel at coffee, when John Tranter joined us, and John Stamp left early to get back for an appointment. ) Thanks, everyone, for your company.

A bright but chilly morning for a well supported two star ride.
Good to welcome Pauline and also to welcome back Katherine and Karl after enforced lay-offs.
The north easterly was testing on the way up to cross the A420 but the tail wind down through Pewsey and Stanford was a rare pleasure.
We were beaten to the café by the one star group - however they couldn't leave before us until we removed bikes that were covering up theirs......
Seven of us enjoyed a further coffee and chin-wag on returning to Grove.

3* Saturday Half Day Ride - Oxford Special 3*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph).

This uses the route of last year's May Day ride to give us a great entrance into Oxford. We head out to Fyfield, under the Tubney tunnel and across to Sunningwell before joining the river by Kennington for a lovely route into town past the College boathouses with views across Christ Church Meadow. Then we will take a look at some of the best buildings Oxford has to offer (including my own St Cross College) before heading out of town again to Wolvercote for a big loop around Port Meadow. Finally we conquer Cumnor Hill and head for home.

There will be a coffee stop somewhere in the mix!

It is just over 40 miles and we should be back in Grove by around 1pm.

Report:
An eventful ride from the start, with one rider struggling with a malfunctioning new bike from the off. However, we set off in good spirits and made good time to Tubney, at which point we suffered a slow puncture on a tubeless tyre which got rather complicated... To cut a long story short, we had a very nice coffee at the Proof Social Bakehouse at Sandford:

https://www.proofbakehouse.com

and then another rider decided to head for home as the cold was getting to them. Fair point - the northerly wind was rather brutal. A 50% attrition rate might be considered a bit excessive, but the remaining four soldiered on and fortunately it all went according to plan from there. We enjoyed the Sustrans path from Kennington down to the river, the towpath to Folly Bridge, a glimpse of some 11th century stonework, the glories of central Oxford, another improved path alongside the Oxford canal, Port Meadow and Cumnor Hill with a rare tailwind before taking full advantage of the same tailwind to race home.

Thanks to all for taking part in one way or another!

A dry if chilly morning which was better than predicted, so great to be out with Des, Karl, Roger and David. We set off at a pace to warm up and pretty much maintained an upper 2* pace for the ride to keep warm, not too tricky with some hills to get the blood pumping!
Out via Laines barn and Locking through Wantage and onto the Letcombes stopping briefly at the top of Holborn hill for refreshments and to wait for the ride leader! We then enjoyed a lovely descent into Childrey and straight on to the Cantorist Farm for coffee. This was my first visit to the Cantorist Farm and I was delighted to see the wonderful barn and to enjoy their beautiful almond croissant, which they kindly heated for me, and truly delicious coffee. A great choice of quality delights on offer other sampled sausage rolls and strawberry doughnuts, naughty but nice! Not all of us are as disciplined as Roger the very finely tuned athlete; no surprise that he cruised up all of the hills. :) (clap)

Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.

Report:
The weather was a great improvement to that forecast and absolutely balmy compared to earlier in the week. Perfect for a ride out with friends.
As planned we headed out to Radley via Charney Fyfield and Boars Hill. We were lucky having a tale wind to assist us on our outward journey, although as we headed towards Radley and Crossed the A 34 we met a head wind which slowed us a little. We then rode
onto the footpath from Radley Lakes to Abingdon which was somewhat muddy in places, such that those with inappropriate cycles had to stop and clear the mud from their wheels, very sorry chaps. A beautiful scenic stretch nonetheless, with sightings of many water birds, Muntjac, Heron and swans on our way to Abbey meadow. We were all by now ready for a coffee and so we made our way to Annie's by the river for refreshments. Some deliberation about seating ensued, and the ride leader was barracked for opting for outside seating and having her rab jacket!
After a relatively short break we headed off to Drayton via the peep o day lane which was perfectly clear and not muddy at all:).
We then returned to Grove via Drayton Steventon and Hanney without incident to enjoy further coffee in Costa.
A lovely ride with great company as always, thanks chaps!

We had a good turnout for this morning’s shortie ride. Nine riders in total. As I arrived at the Beacon I was greeted by eight very keen riders all waiting for the off which was lovely to see, some riders I hadn’t seen for a while which was an added bonus. The ride went smoothly, along with no mechanical’s/ incident free. We experienced a testing head wind on certain parts of the ride though this didn’t faze anyone. We all enjoyed an amazing coffee stop at Cantorist Farm Childrey, along with several other cycling groups. Thanks to everyone for being such an amazing group to lead. Look forward to seeing you all on the evening rides very soon! (mm)

The wind was from SSW - more or less on the nose all the way to Shrivenham. It was quite testing. At our ride leader's instruction, we formed into two groups with Roger leading the larger group and Des and Karl following on at a more comfortable pace - they joined the first group at the ever hospitable Farm Shop Cafe in Shrivenham.
We returned in the same groupings with Roger going via Stanford (an attempt to dodge the wind) and Des via Gainfield.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the number of riders surging to 9 on Saturday morning, despite the unsettled forecast. And everyone was still game at the start, despite the shower that swept in at quarter to ten. However, it was not cold or windy and the rain gradually eased over our first few miles. It was good to be out with signs of Spring aplenty. There were drifts of daffodils in the verges, cherry blossom in gardens and green shoots and white blackthorn blossom in the hedgerows to enjoy on our way.
We stopped briefly for a breather by the little church in Lyford before continuing on to Charney Bassett. By the time we reached Stanford the rain had stopped. We enjoyed a convivial break at the coffee shop and Lorna and I found the small breakfast to be excellent value.
Our return leg via Park Lane and Asti Equestrian was dry and uneventful, the rain holding off until we stopped in the OMH car park. Prefect timing. Thanks everyone for your good company on an enjoyably mellow ride to lead.

Open all day, every day with a good choice of cooked food or cakes and plenty of seating, making it a great stopping place. We then continued round the north of Witney before coming to our second stop at Aston Pottery - which was as good as always.

Report:
A lovely morning for a ride out with friends and a chance to try out the new Old Stable Cafe in Wantage. The route was as planned out to Hanney, Steventon with a detour through the village and returning to Wantage via Hendred and Ardington. Rather than going on the footpath to the Neson we detoured around the New estate to Charlton and on to the Old Stables cafe where we met up with the 1* riders. A very sociable affair and wonderful coffee and Cake! We then dispersed with riders making their own way home from the cafe at their leisure. A great ride with good company and excellent cake- what more could one ask for!

Harlequin Hack Audax 3*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
Uffington Village Hall, SN7 7RE
Description:
This is a really nice, relatively gentle, early season 100km Audax event which we have supported for many years.

68 mile / 110km Audax event starting from Uffington. Controls at Witney, Chipping Norton and Uffington, plus 1 information control.

A modest excursion into the Cotswold hills followed by a gentle wander through the watery lanes of the upper Thames, the Evenlode and the Windrush.

The ride starts and ends at the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall in Uffington which has a village shop adjacent. Food and drink available at the start/finish and included in the entry fee.

This will be treated as a club ride for anyone who wants to join. Note individuals will need to enter and pay for the event via Audax UK. The good news is that Cycling UK has an arrangement with Audax UK to cover the membership fee. Note that such events can get full so get your entry in as early as possible.

Weather:
cloudy with light rainwindy (fine)
Report:
A challenging weather forecast was worrying all week, and a few folk pulled out (understandably) as it didn't get any better. Then heavy rain overnight and drizzle at the start was not promising. However, thanks to Andy and a welcome return for Mark, we got on with it and actually conditions on the road were not as bad as feared. We had a stiff headwind in the first half, and the section from Charlbury to Chippy was pretty brutal, but it was a great relief to turn back south and finally have the wind behind us. We had a first coffee stop at Cogges Farm and then a lovely late lunch at the Cafe de la Post in Chadlington. It has to be noted that we (and the organisers) had underestimated the degree of chaos caused by Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm Shop which happens to be right on the route. A half mile queue of cars, liquid mud everywhere, cars parking on every squelching verge - not fun. We were relieved to get through. Fortunately the ride was incident free after that and we really enjoyed the route, particularly the section from Chadlington down to Curbridge.

I'm including Des on the list as he very kindly gave his time as a control marshall and also Katherine who provided the catering on behalf of Flexicare.
