RIDE CANCELLED - Off Road Tuesday Evening Ride 3*
Leader:
Robin Tucker
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
RIDE CANCELLED - It's all 3: cold, wet and dark. Plus it's windy too.
Really not a night to be out.
Am I getting old? - Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres required and good lights when it gets dark (‘get you home’ lights in Spring/Autumn). We are keen to welcome new riders and can make recommendations or have spare lights to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we’ll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if we decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

Report:
6 riders set off at a good pace but by the time we reached Denchworth we had lost Barry E to a puncture as he decided to turn back - we continued on with 5. But just as we entered Charney the cry went up of another puncture - this time Barry S. He replaced the tube after finding the culprit, a small flint. We had a quick vote and decided to change route and head for the Cantorist at Chidrey as everyone was cold and Barry wasn't trusting his tyres after a run of punctures. We were well looked after at the cafe and got safely back home.

If I had to title this ride it would be 'Barrys' punctures'. Thanks to everyone for your company on a trying ride!

A change to the original route as it seems safest to keep to high ground to avoid the flooding. Up Chain hill, a loop around the downs and then down Manor Road, so quite a lot of climbing - I'll hope to have more energy for it this week!

Report:
Well, this proved to be an eventful ride!
It was good to be able to actually run a ride after the icy conditions of the past few days (more of this to come, I think).
The run out to coffee at Blake's Coleshill was uneventful enough - your ride leader was enjoying his new oval chainring. Blake's coffee and cakes proved up to standard and the service was very efficient today - it was very well staffed.
The troubles started after we left Blake's. I followed the one way system but Barry didn't. We all went down the hill as planned but Barry went back up the hill. We realised some distance up Highworth Road and Des set off to find him on his e-bike.
Reunited, we set off down the hill to Shrivenham. That is to say that most of us did......
Steve had a stop to sort an issue as we set off again and decided that the route must have been via Watchfield. This time Barry turned back in search of our lost soul but returned, eventually, empty handed.
Having managed to make phone contact with Steve, we agreed to meet up in Shrivenham High Street.
By now, John, having an 'engagement' back home, had set off alone. Eight became seven.
Just past Baulking, Steph collected a rear wheel puncture. Des, with another appointment to meet, set off alone. Seven became six.
A squirt of foamy stuff failed to fix the puncture - apparently Steph's tyres are not the easiest to get off but it was decided there was no option. David stayed behind with Steph to fix the puncture to avoid us all getting cold. Six became four.
Remarkably, we didn't lose any more riders and the four safely returned to Grove.

Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader.

Another trip up and around on the downs as seems the best option for avoiding the floods. A tad over 40k but quite hilly.

Please note later start time

Report:
Given weather conditions, (still some flooding and forecast cold temperatures) I had decided a few days earlier to switch to a shorter ride.

The later start paid off as it had warmed up (well compared to first thing) and we were delighted to actually see some sunshine which went someway to negating the chilly wind.

Although we had shortened the ride there was lots of climbing (about 700m) but we concluded it was worth it for the spectacular views.

Road conditions were actually good on the whole and we were incident free.

Great to see Elliott back cycling with us and Thanks to everyone for joining.

1* Saturday Half Day Ride 1*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:

Description:
For what will hopefully be our first 1* ride of the year, an afternoon ride out to Ginge via Ardington and the Icknield Greenway, returning to Wantage for refreshments. We will make a tour of Kingsgrove on the way using some of the new tracks and paths around the north of the site. There is an optional route back to Grove via Locks Lane and Stockham after tea.

Not essential, but if you are planning to come do let me know by text.

Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 12-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.

Weather:

Report:
It was good to be out in the window of more benign weather between the floods and ice and the gales of Storm Isha. It was great to see Nick P out on his bike again too.
We headed out through Charlton for a tour of the ever-developing Kingsgrove estate, less familiar to Steve and Anke. We stopped to take in the arrangements at the new “bus gate” (still being used by all and sundry) before passing the school to reach the junction of Rutherford Road with Gipsy Lane. Beyond, the next phase of the estate is in preparation. We walked the short stretch of Gipsy Lane over the course of the Wantage Eastern Relief Road and through to the woodland walk. Even so, several of us picked up sufficient mud on our rims to require major degunking before we could continue. Awheel again, we enjoyed the views across the vale from the path before recrossing the new main road by the entrance roundabout to the shared path on the other side. It was then a few hundred yards around the eastern edge of the estate to the A417 roundabout and the road to Lockinge.
In planning the route, I had hoped to avoid any ice, so it was something of a surprise to find a stretch of slush on the corner of the Icknield Greenway in West Lockinge. We carefully negotiated it on both outward and inward parts of the ride.
We then followed the Icknield Greenway as planned through Ardington, over the Bridge of Lesser Doom to Ginge Road and continued up to Ginge, with Anke leading us up the hills.
To avoid flooding on the road down to Lockinge, we turned off at Betterton and enjoyed the long descent down to Ardington, and then headed into Wantage.
The Bear Hotel in Wantage is doing a deal of a free cake with a hot drink for £2.50 until 5pm each day and we thought we would give a try. The pub was quite busy and a little noisy but we were able to find a table in the corner and there was a good selection of cakes with ample portions. Afterwards it was feeling decidedly chillier as we left town via Locks Lane. We said goodbye to Anke before the four of us returned to Grove via Stockham, the newly resurfaced track by the Crown Research Centre and Downsview Road.
Thanks everyone for your company on an enjoyable ride. Apologies for the belated report and thanks to Anke for the pictures.

Report:
The route was amended from the published one as a recce of the Denchworth Road at 9.15 revealed a mixture of melting and still frozen slush.
I also broke one of my cardinal rules in that we went out with the chilly southerly wind!
So, out via the A338 it was.
We did see the odd icy patch at the road edge but, in general, the chosen roads were clear.
Coffee was taken at Munch (a first for Roger T) and it was good to meet up with Karl.
Turning back south on the A338 from Hanney, I was grateful to John for taking the lead, and to Des for taking over with his e-bike. The wind was quite stiff. Yours truly did have to work quite hard to keep up with the pace though!
Three of us took further coffee at Costa on return to Grove.
Not the longest ride, but something of an innovation to have a Thursday ride on a Saturday and club rides of late have been in short supply.

A chilly start, but thankfully, frost free.
One or two road closures, including Denchworth Road following the van fire last night - duly ignored as passable on bike.
Barry was sporting his new GP Four Seasons tyres, after giving up on GP 5000. Thankfully, the Puncture Fairy stayed away. The only minor mechanical was Anke's modified front mudguard bridge. A cable tie stopped things coming undone - always a 'good to have' in your toolkit.
Aston Pottery was well up to scratch - even though they had just run out of cheese scones......
I am pleased to report that Great Brook is easily passable - almost dry in fact.
Anke scooted up Buckland Hill, with Barry in hot pursuit. The rest of us followed on at our own individual paces!
Further coffee was taken by five of us on return to Grove - and we didn't lose anyone today.

What a difference the sunshine makes!!! Superb to be out without multiple layers of clothing, (in fact certain members of the group were shedding them as the ride progressed).

Roads still a bit wet in places but generally improving, (well apart from the pot holes that seem to have multiplied even more over the last few months).

The route unintentionally (honestly) was an exact copy of Roger's 2* earlier in the month - but unlike that ride we luckily survived without technical issues or unplanned solo diversions and all made it back to Grove with smiles on our faces.

Both Cinnamon Buns and Sausage Rolls at Blakes Coleshill got a big thumbs up, although as it was busy we had to sit outside (thank goodness it was sunny) and the orders were a bit muddled / delayed. The waitress was very good about it though and it wouldn't put me off going there again.

Thanks for the company everyone

Report:
Select Group tonight for session based on Sprints and Hills, (courtesy of Zwift). The session was trying to teach us to recover (from sprints) whilst still cycling uphill - but not sure my legs were impressed.

Lots of friendly banter and a quiz based on US States.
