25 riders tonight including Ed who joined the slower ride at Stanford.

After a gentle ride to Gainfield, the group split with 12 riders enjoying a sprint to Fernham and Uffington (21 miles) while the remainder led by Jane enjoyed a more leisurely return via Stanford.

We welcomed newcomers Steve (Smith) and Geoffrey. This could have been the last time Svein and Kari will be out with us as they will be returning to Norway later this month. We wish them well.

Report:
A shower at 1:45 may have deterred some riders but 17 was a manageable number! We waited 20 minutes for the rain to pass before setting off, but after that it was dry though not the warmest summer's afternoon.
Our route was through Charney Bassett to Southmoor and back via West Hanney about 20 miles. An excursion through the villages of Hinton Waldrist and Longworth proved to be a novelty to even our regular riders. The bridleway between the two provided the first stretch of club off-road since the start of the Foot & mouth crisis in February. We came back via the Hanney to Denchworth bridleway too.
The ride took us just under three hours, with a relaxed ice cream stop at Southmoor.
We were pleased to welcome Ali, who hadn't cycled such a distance for a few years and Glen's son Gary (8) (who seems to like his off-road, if his predilection for cycling along the road margin is anything to go by!) It was good to have Angela out with us again too.

Great descent of course down Manor Road and then past Lains barn after a detour to Lockinge.

Report:
Festival of Cycling Week proper dawned wet and it was raining when we started to assemble at 10 am, in the passageway through the Victoria Cross Gallery adjacent to the Bear. The covered forecourt of WH Smiths was free, so after a quick word and permission from the manager we relocated to the dry. Hopefully not too many missed us as a result.

Business was initially slow but picked about 12:00 when the sun came out. We briefly had three stands in use and a queue. Overall 16 bikes were 'MoT'ed and 8 postcoded, courtesy of Pc Peter Hales from Thames Valley Police. We had a number of enquiries at our stand and friendly visits from local cyclsits who prefer to do their own thing. Amongst the visitors was Alan, safely back from completing the End to End (congratulations). Suzanne Kelse from the Wantage & Grove Review popped along to take some photographs. Jan took the opportunity to use the bike stands to dismantle her damaged frame.

Thanks to all the mechanics for their help. Lets hope for better weather next year!

Report:
Gorgeous midsummer's evening; what better way to spend it than a ride to a pub on the Thames. 8 of us travelled out through Stanford and Pusey and then met John and Amanda and 5 from West Oxon at the pub. Jane was out on her new Thorn Audax for the first time and showing a quick turn of speed (which newcomer Julie did well to keep up with).
On the return, when the group split near Kingston Bagpuize, Steve decided to chase Laurent and co. bound for Stanford, who he thought had gone the wrong way, while Jane waited at the junction in confusion before deciding to follow him. Having realised his mistake Steve turned back. Perhaps it was the unfamiliar riding positions on their new bikes but Steve caught us up while Jane ended up at the Southmoor roundabout...
The rest of us enjoyed the super views of mars on the way home.

13 of us were mad enough to be up for 4 am (Pat joined us in Lambourn), Mary and Barbara having already cycled over from Witney! Had I not been leading, I would happily have gone back to bed, but thereafter I started to wake up! It was good to have Brian and Jonathan back with us and to initiate four Avebury virgins (Alan, Barbara, Mary and Dave)! Jane was trying the full ride for the first time on her brand new Thorn. Sadly, Kev broke a spoke and buckled his wheel a mile out of Wantage, so went home but still joined us for breakfast.
There was a band of haze on the horizon as we waited for the sunrise at the top of Hackpen Hill. Then just as we were about to continue to Lambourn, the tip of the sun emerged from the murk. We waited for the full orange orb to appear. Descending into Lambourn was stunning with mist hugging the ground and a wall of mist by the trees at the bottom of the hill. Thereafter we enjoyed a glorious sunny day with not a cloud in the sky.
Our route took us through Baydon to Aldbourne, where we stopped briefly for refreshments, then over the hill to Ogbourne St George with the fast descent from Snap. Luckily the bridleways North of Manton had just reopened after FMD and we were able to ride up onto the gallops for the views over the Kennett Valley.
We reached Avebury at 8:50. The Red Lion did us proud this year, with a table laid and plentiful supplies of orange juice and coffee to refresh us.
We returned by first climbing East Kennett hill (by way of a change) for the views and then enjoyed the descent into Marlborough. The railway path to Chiseldon is now fully restored and we were able to cycle its full length again.
By the time we reached our coffee (beer) stop at The Baker
