A mild and still morning, perfect for a leisurely cycle ride, with excellent company. Susie, Di, Carin Patrick and I headed out of Grove towards Laines Barn with the aim being to tackle the hills early on and ahead of the coffee stop scheduled at Susie & Roger Turnbull's in Ginge. Having conquered the major hill of the day we sailed into Ardington, through the village to join the new cycle path. It was so good to be out in the fresh air after the last few days of rain and we paused to discuss tactics of approaching the bridge of doom from an alternative direction. Carin nailed it a low gear to climb the other side! It was muddy and so we took great care and reassembled at the crossroads, before continuing along the cycle path towards Hendred. I was enjoying the joy of a smooth run down hill and became aware as I got to the post office that the group were not with me...they had stopped to admire a building project, I doubled back to gather the throng and we continued through the village over the brook and towards the path linking the Hendreds- sorry about the eggs Di/Susie! A lovely path with some controversy, took us back to the Ginge road and our route to coffee. It was so lovely to be greeted by Susie looking very sprightly after her hip surgery, and such amazing hospitality form her and Roger. A great coffee stop with terrific cake and wonderful company, thoroughly appreciated. Thank you Susie and Roger. It was also good to see 2* group for coffee . The journey home was straightforward avoiding the floods in Locking and takin g the cycle path to Wantage. Susie left us at the Neslon and the rest of us went through Charlton and along the cycle path back to Grove. Thank you all for great company and especially to Susie and Roger for their hospitality.

A slightly longer ride to meet up with the 1 star riders for coffee and cakes, courtesy of Susie Turnbull at Ginge. Route shows return via the Greenway but options available to return by road.

Weather:
black low cloud
Report:
Moderate consternation was caused as the ride headed off into The Vale, away from our coffee stop. This was, of course, a bid to get some miles in before the stop and differentiate from the parallel one star ride.
We reached Susie and Roger in Ginge for coffee and cake (thanks Susie!) after the one star group but left only shortly after them.
On advice, the end route was modified to avoid Lockinge and we decided to return via road rather than The Greenway.
Roll on next Thursday!

Seven of us set off from Wantage on a chilly & cloudy morning. The ride was lumpy from start to finish with all riders managing with ease. Traffic was reasonably light with most drivers being very courteous which was nice to see.

We had some fantastic views of the snow drops & daffodils, also a sighting of the ponies grazing in Snelsmore. We stopped at the Hampstead Norreys Community shop/ cafe where we all enjoyed some hot beverages & bacon & egg baps/ special sausage rolls & other fine fare. As usual the service was excellent!

On the return leg we experienced a very strong head wind which tested all riders to the limit! Hats off to all riders!!

Out west to start with: Challow (where joined by Stu McT), Childrey, Sparsholt, then up two favourite descents (surely some mistake) Sparsholt Field and Seven Barrows to test the legs.
We worked our way from there back to the Ridgeway and eventually down Green Giant & Lark Hill.
Quite surprised that it all added up to 20 miles, it felt like less. But the trails had dried out in the wind.

NB: it is my birthday, so I have factored in an early start to get home in time for a family lunch!

Heading east to conquer Boar's Hill (a surprisingly easy climb - honest) for one of the best views of Oxford's dreaming spires and to enjoy NCN Route 5 around Abingdon. Very happy to see some sunshine, after some less encouraging forecasts earlier in the week. Also happy to see such a great group gathering.

All went according to plan - the climb of Boars Hill was genuinely not too bad and the descent to Bayworth was exhilarating. The NCN5 route into Abingdon from Drayton was busy with walkers and cyclists - good to see, but we had to be careful. Nice improved surface though. Great coffee stop at the Throwing Buns Cafe and a fun cut through on Peep O'Day Lane before the run home via Steventon and Hanney.

A very nice birthday treat! Thanks to all for great company.

A nice temperature plus cloudy sun made for nearly perfect riding conditions though we did experience the occasional head wind. Traffic conditions were incredibly light along with some good safe overtaking from passing traffic.

It was nice to see lots of other cyclists out enjoying the fine weather! Great Brook was as always a pleasure to cycle along. We arrived just before opening at Aston Pottery which was a first! Both Roger & I enjoyed some scrumptious cakes & fine coffee.

1* Saturday Half Day Ride 1*
Leader:

Start Time:
2:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Please note the 2pm start time now that the days are lengthening. The forecast is looking good: sunshine with an easterly breeze, so perfect for an easterly ride with the breeze to blow us home. We'll head into Wantage to pick up NCN route 44 to Ginge, then a short stretch of the Icknield Greenway to East Hendred. We'll zig zig through to the top of Milton Hill, enjoy the descent of Steventon Hill and then return across Cow common to the Hanneys. We'll have a refreshment stop at one of the pubs before a short hop back to Grove.

As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. A lovely sunny cloudless afternoon for a ride with a nice friendly group of 6. We stopped briefly in Vale Avenue to admire the display of daffodils before heading on to Wantage. After riding through the Charlton Estate, we picked up NCN route 544 from Larkhill and continued into a steady headwind to Lockinge. An advantage of an afternoon start was that the lane through Betterton to Ginge was bathed in sunshine. With leaves yet to come, this is the best time of year to enjoy the sweeping views. We stopped at the top of the hill above Ginge to admire. After an easy off-road section of the Icknield Greenway, we coasted down into East Hendred. The short stretch of the A417 before Featherbed Lane was the last into the wind and we were soon enjoying the long descent into Steventon and a fine tailwind across Cow Common.
We stopped for refreshments at the Black Horse in East Hanney, sitting in the garden in the Spring sunshine. Steph and David shared the last piece of Lardy cake, while the rest of us went for chocolate brownies, which after inspection were discovered to be chocolate bread and butter pudding!
Heading back the last few miles to Grove through West Hanney and Denchworth it was becoming decidedly chilly as the lanes were cast into deepening shadow with the lowering sun. It felt like an evening ride in April and whetted the appetite for the season to come.
Thanks everyone for you company for a lovely mellow ride. Our next Saturday 1* will be the Back-on-your-bike ride on Easter Saturday. Do mark it in your diary.

But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if we decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

Many thanks to Karl for local info, we cannot now go to KBS as they are closed due to another Covid outbreak. Munchies it is then!

Weather:
sunny
Report:
Another small and select band for a Thursday two star.
I had planned to go to the excellent value KBS Cafe - unfortunately the volunteer staff had succumbed to another round of Covid leading to closure for a few weeks.
Munch at Southmoor proved an excellent fall-back, my bacon and egg bap was much enjoyed.
We had ridden via Fyfield, the one stars had ridden directly to the cafe and arrived before us. The return run via Charney Basset was delightful, being downhill and with slight wind assistance as the wind, such as it was, had moved to a North easterly - most kind!
Cycling in summer gear in March is always a bonus, great company made it even better.

Weather:
sunny
Report:
A lovely sunny day and eight riders enjoyed a light tail wind on the way out. This did, of course mean a headwind on the return leg but it was never much.
Supplies at Ashbury Shop Cafe were limited - blame it on the weather, but Karl found gluten free carrot cake so he was a happy bunny!
A great group, particularly good to see Barry out on a group ride and an average pace of 21kph was healthy for a two star!

Report:
Despite the clocks going forward we all gathered on time. Foggy and cold to start with, (such a contrast to the previous 10 days and especially yesterday), but the weather improved as the ride went on.
It was a somewhat hilly route but each incline was taken in good spirits. And of course what goes up must come down!
Discovered a new road (for me anyway) from the Compton/Aldworth Road to Hackney Bottom. Downhill and quiet, a joy.
The only potential incident was near Wooley Home Farm when a lady farmer waved frantically for us to stop. Good job we did as two large bulls crossed in front of us. [If we had collided with them it is obvious who would have come off the worst!!]
The kitchens were closed by the time we arrived at the cafe so no breakfast baps today - but still a great choice of carbs to assist on the homeward leg.
Thanks everyone for your company.
