Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:60-70km (38 - 45 miles) ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-22km/h (13-14mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.If the weather is reasonable I'm planning to try and get to the Chilterns up Brixton Hill to Nuffield and down Swyncombe Hill with a teastop at Benson Waterfront. A bit longer than advertised (84 km or 52 miles) but pretty flat other than the main hill of the afternoon. As the final destination is fairly distant I've had to programme in a stretch of the A417, but I've put that at the beginning so we can get it done whilst we are fresh UPDATE :- Currently (Tue afternoon) a strong SW wind is forecast for Saturday. I will alter this to a westwards first route if that becomes reality. UPDATE :- Sat morning. Forecast looking pretty good now. Southerly wind won't bother us too much and not as strong as previously forecast. So plan is to follow original route to Benson. If the weather goes bad we can cut off the Nuffield climb at Ipsden. |
||
Report:Select group this afternoon - everyone watching the olympics?Welcome to new rider Rebecca who unfortunately had to turn back at the Hendreds with a problem with her bike, I hope that she is able to join us on future rides. The ride went very well with some beautiful weather. The wind was rarely in our faces and was actually beneficial for many stretches. The climb to Nuffield up Brixton Hill was excellent, going up in three sections with the middle section the steepest. The descent down Swyncombe Hill was fast and smooth. We pushed the pace through Ewelme and Benson to get to the Waterfront Café before the rain came. We managed it just in time After refreshments and the rain had stopped we head off back through Wallingford and another brief heavy shower. A tailwind pushed us up Sires Hill (and my PB up there which is amazing as I ride that road several times a week!). Legs began to tire as we finished via the Hanney Road and a headwind down the A338 to Grove. Thanks for coming on the ride, the Chilterns are a way away from Wantage but is fantastic cycling country. | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Off-road ride around local tracks. |
||
Report:Another somewhat damp ride. But, we are hardy people so we made the best of it!We squished over towards Wantage, but headed across the cornfield path instead of the regular route, and this put us in the right place to climb Goddards Brook path. Then along the Ridgeway and down ZigZag Hill to East Ginge farm - NOT the singletrack as it is very overgrown with nettles at the moment. To stretch the ride out, we went East up the Sustrans path to the Scutchamer's Knob road, then left and back along the parallel bridleway near Hendred. These tracks at least had reasonably waterproof surfaces and brought us up to a respectable 16.5 miles and plenty of mud to show for it! | ||

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Don't miss this one (and note it starts at Old Mill Hall)! This is a 2* all day ride, which is a repeat of a popular ride from last year. Almost entirely flat, leisurely riding - but with the chance to see Oxford from some very different angles. Out via Hanney and Fyfield, down Cumnor Hill and then a cunning route parallel to the A34 up to beautiful Wytham and Wolvercote. Down through wealthy North Oxford to lunch at the amazing Zappi's bike cafe in the heart of town. Then my patented secret offroad route out of town along the river and through to Botley. Back up Cumnor Hill (we will need some exercise..) and home via Wooton, Tubney and Charney Bassett. Total distance about 45 miles. |
||
Riders:Andy CowanDavid Yearley Derek Boutle Des Higgs John Tranter Mila Yearley Nicole Pethybridge Paul Jarvis Richard Pethybridge Robert Shaw Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Riders = 12 Report:A very good turn-out on a less than perfect weather day. Thanks to all who came out. All went according to plan. We just managed to avoid the torrential rain on the edge of Oxford, thanks to the tried and tested method of stopping to put waterproofs on. That soon stopped it. Zappi's was as cool as ever and very efficient with lunch. After Cumnor Hill, Andy and Paul decided to form an elite breakaway group while the rest of us carried on at a nice pace. Rob suffered a puncture at Tubney, but the combined wisdom of the crowd and Richard's CO2 canister sorted him out. Back in Grove by 3.30. | ||

Leader:Geoff Covey |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A hilly route this week to blow away the cobwebs, riding at a steady pace, but not too fast!Leave Grove, out through the Letcombes and up Hackpen Hill. Down Sparsholt, turning left at the junction on towards White Horse Hill. Up the Dragon Hill Road and down the other side to Uffington taking in Baulking and Fowler Hill. Then it's back through Goosey and Denchworth to Grove. If it's raining I may alter it slightly. |
||
Riders:Amanda SeddonAndy Cowan Bryan Charleston Dan Cox David Smith Geoff Covey Janet Charleston Louis Hall Richard Pethybridge Simon Cox Ursula Hallam Riders = 11 Report:A somewhat fragmented ride tonight, my apologies. Slightly too quick at the beginning (sorry), and then 3 punctures in quick succession. Once the hills of Hackpen and White Horse were covered, we regained a more even pace, and rode home together as more of group, which was great. I think I need to invest in a speedo in order to keep the pace a little more even.Still learning... Thanks to all who came and for your feedback. | ||

Report:A dry day for once!We celebrated by punishing ourselves up Lark Hill, then turning right and completing the climb to the Ridgeway on the A338 (you can now duck into the field about halfway up for a bumpier but traffic-free climb). Then East and down the back of the Ridgeway on the broad grassy swath known as 'Ice Hill' for its winter microclimate - no coldness today though! We climbed back up and headed back West and down Goddards Brook and back to Grove. Still some puddles to dodge on the section near Grove - I'm tempted to bring a shovel and fill them in one day! | ||

No incidents to report apart from losing a) a bit of a mudguard (Mila), b) a bottle cage (Nicole) and c) complete control of his bike (David B).Lunch was taken in Malmesbury at a couple of cafes so we didn't completely swamp them en masse. Report:A mixture of holiday season and mixed weather on the day meant there was just a little twosome on tonight's ride. A gentle amble at our own pace. Jetlag and other contributing factors were used/blamed for justifying a gentle ride. But what's wrong with just wanting a gentle pace I say...."Ambled" up through East Challow, to Childrey, then down the Hill, taking in Goosey, then Denchworth and back to Grove. Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Off-road ride around local tracks. |
||
Report:A bit damp under wheel and a bit low on turn-out as a couple of regulars were away on hols etc. However, that didn't stop us having a good time and we decided a slightly longer ride was in order.We headed out of Grove to the fringe of Wantage then Ardington. Then kept going east to Harwell science park and almost Chilton. Then up to the Ridgeway and a long haul west until we passed Baron Wantage and headed down 'Sheep Hill'. The grass had just been cut so we both ended up with a big collection wrapped round our wheels, gears, etc. and this required a stop and some pulling-off. Then back to Grove just as things started getting a little dark - and so needing a little light. | ||

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This is a modified version of a recent 3* ride - only one hill, but I think it is worth us stretching our legs on Boar's Hill. Out from Grove through Denchworth to Frilford, along to Cumnor, across to Wootton and up the aforementioned hill. Hopefully stonking views of the dreaming spires before the big descent to Sunningwell and across to Abingdon for a tea stop at the Throwing Buns. Then the riverside cut through to Sutton Courtenay and Drayton and home via Steventon and Hanney. About 40 miles altogether. |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonBrian Hipwell David Bridge Jasmine Talbot John Stamp John Talbot John Tranter Katherine Boyce Mila Yearley Nicole Pethybridge Phil Stubbings Richard Delacour Richard Preece Stephen Quartermain Tracey Talbot Riders = 15 Weather:Report:In this wacky summer, this was yet another weather affected ride. A remarkably good turnout given the threatening clouds and pretty dire weather forecast. All went according to plan (apart from the Chairman's puncture) and we cunningly avoided the looming clouds until the approach to Abingdon, when we failed to out-run a thunderstorm from Wootton and got a good soaking. It could be argued that the time delay from the puncture precisely matched the time needed to escape the thunderstorm, but I couldn't possibly comment... The Throwing Buns cafe was full, but they very nicely set up the outdoor tables under cover and all was well. A bit of a wet return, but at least there was a hint of sun as we dripped our way into Grove.Thanks to all the brave souls for their company and their courage! | ||
