Daytime 1* Thursday Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Lizzie Long |
Start Time:10:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Social rides up to 24km (15 miles), usually with a cafe stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Please check website on the morning of the ride if the weather is poor as it may be cancelled or the start time changed.Will use the route I planned that got cancelled, i.e. out of Grove via North Drive and on to Ardington for coffee. Nothing too long or strenuous! CHANGE OF PLAN as Grocer chef will be closed. We'll instead do a circular (ish) route and come back to the Cornerstone in Grove for coffee. |
||
Riders:Carin TranterDavid Bridge Des Higgs Diana Whidborne John Groves John Tranter Karl Blake Lizzie Long Lorna Swanton Martyn Wigmore Paul Bentley Roger Postbeschild Stephanie Haddrell Steve Swanton Riders = 14 Report:A good number of riders turned up for the first mid-week ride of 2020. The weather was very reasonable - a bit cloudy, a bit sunny, a bit windy. The venue for coffee was changed for the second time at the last minute, and the route once, due to many cafes not being open. Martin and Roger led us confidently through the flood at Lockinge and we ended up at the museum (Di's first visit there!) for coffee at the end of a ride that was considerably shorter than of late but hopefully everyone enjoyed it. I think Best Mate enjoyed the company anyway.I apologise for not appointing a sweep! I don't think anyone is out there still.... | ||

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:10:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.Hilly start to the new year: Chain Hill, through Farnborough to West Ilsley and then to Brightwalton and Great Shefford before lunch in the new café at Lambourn. Returning to Grove via Sheepdrove and the Letcombes. Do not be concerned about the hills unless you are a fast climber and don't like waiting for slow climbers like me |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonChris Bailey David Smith Jenny Gower John Groves Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Nick Dunton Nicole Pethybridge Paul Bentley Robin Tucker Sharon Bedford Terry Penn Ursula Hallam Riders = 14 Weather:Report:Good turnout for the first 3* of 2020. Terry kindly swept and everyone looked out for each other. Few mechanicals involving chains and a mudguard but otherwise uneventful.The views from the top of the hills were great payback for the effort, the Downs never fail to deliver. There were lots of soars of red kites and near West Ilsley some of us were lucky enough to have a really close view of a hovering kestrel. I never tire of seeing birds of prey! Can highly recommend Goodies in Lambourn. They now have bike racks out the back and they are monitored by CCTV. Service was brisk, although orders came out in a rather random fashion! All in all a really lovely first ride of 2020, thanks all for being a great bunch to lead. | ||

A bit wet under tyre but apart from a little chill and a light breeze, a perfect way to spend a Sunday morning.There were lots of other cyclists out and about enjoying the morning but I suspect, once the New Yearâᅵᅵs resolutions are forgotten, not all will be going week in and week out through the year! Thanks to everyone for a great ride out and to Karen for sweeping. | ||

Leader:Jon Townsin |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.Depending on the weather (!) this ride will take us over Hackpen and down into Lambourn and eastwards along the valley to Boxford and up the downs to Brightwalton and an exhilarating swoop down Chain Hill and back to Grove. If the weather is horrible, this may change ! Keep an eye out on this site and Facebook for updates. |
||
Riders:David JacksonDes Higgs John Groves Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Lorna Swanton Stephanie Haddrell Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Report:A breezy ride it was! Seven of us left OMH to head out to the Letcombes and the climb up Hackpen Hill. It was one of those winds that seems against you whichever direction you happen to be cycling in! A rare opportunity to pedal down the back of Hacken to Lambourn (!) was rewarded by a very pleasant stop at Pricilla’s Kitchen at East Garston. Quick and friendly service together with perfectly acceptable coffee and cake .Karen joined us for the return leg through Boxford and up the Downs to the top of Chain Hill. Cross winds made the descent a little skittish but we all made it down safely. The only downside was a puncture that Steve picked up but everyone seemed pleased with an enjoyable 60 km ride in a wind tunnel! | ||

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:The second in the Sunday Shorties Ride series - a 2 hour ride at 3* pace.Building on Jon's trip to Uffington last week, this week's Shorty is to Uffington via Littleworth and Faringdon . Few hills but nothing major (43km and 300m of climbing). A good chance for us to work out what is possible in 2 hours. Starting from Grove at 9am but finishing at Wantage Market Place for a coffee stop for anyone that wants one. |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonClare Hazell Jane John Jo Little John Groves Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Lisa Footner Sharon Bedford Riders = 9 Weather:Report:Despite the early Sunday hour, 9 gathered for the inaugural 3* Sunday Shortie. This was particularly good as before 8am, the wind wasn't just howling but the rain was hammering on the windows in the dark!Relatively quickly, we were cycling in sunshine towards a rainbow, which although lovely was ominous :0. Luckily the bits of rain we did encounter weren't much of an issue and didn't last long. There was a lot of water around and some of the roads were very mucky. The wind was a real battle in some of the more exposed areas and just there for all but the return along the Springline road. 6 or so of us intended to go to Marmalade, but with it full, we all decided to say goodbye and go home to get out of our wet and muddy gear! All-in-all a great start to the new Sunday morning rides. | ||

We returned home through Childrey, taking the bridleway to Challow heading back to Wantage. The day and route very different to my plan but nice company and good fun. | ||

1* Saturday Half Day Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.A gentle loop around the vale with a tea stop at the Bay Tree Cafe in Wantage towards the end of the ride. We'll have one short section along the A417 before turning right to West Challow and then will make use of two tarmacked bridleways with one short potholed section into East Challow. Total distance about 17 miles, but there is a 10-mile option back to Grove for those that would like the opportunity of a shorter ride. Lights recommended. |
||
Riders:Des HiggsKarl Blake Laura Legate Lorna Swanton Martyn Wigmore Michael Tayler Natasha Legate Nick Portsmouth Rachel Legate Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Tony Clark Riders = 13 Weather:Report:After the rain and squally weather midweek, it was lovely to have a sunny, if cold, afternoon for our first Saturday 1* ride of the year. Although flood waters had subsided, there was still a lot of water about and muddy puddles/potholes to avoid.We followed the route as planned stopping occasionally in the warmth of the sun for a breather and chat (it was decidedly cool in the shade). We enjoyed the sweeping views of the vale and Ridgeway from the top of the Circourt Road railway bridge and later from the track between Childrey and East Challow. At East Challow, several riders decided to head for home and two peeled off in Wantage. So 8 of us stopped for tea in the Bay Tree cafe, where we were joined by the rest of the Legate family. The cream tea with lemon drizzle scones and lemon curd was a new find. On leaving the cafe, the air was markedly colder and the back route through Foliat Drive was new to some. 4 of us made it back to OMH just after sunset. Thanks everyone for your company on a mellow afternoon. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. Saturday evening: Ride plotted, but including the NCN was too long so that's abandoned. But we've got a nice 42 mile route, not mega-hilly, with coffee/brunch fairly late (30 miles in) so maybe bring a snack or some energy in your drink. (Once again I curse the lack of a bridge/ferry at Bablock Hythe!) Weather will be cold, calm and sunny.Saturday morning: A plan is forming - the last few rides I've been on have gone South and I haven't been to Aston Pottery for ages, so let's go there; and Sustrans have just been resurfacing NCN5 near Kennington with a very smooth surface. So the rough route is: Grove, Hanney, Steventon, Abingdon, Radley, NCN5 by Kennington to the edge of Oxford, then head West via Wooton, Appleton etc to the A415 where we cross the river and head for Stanton Harcourt. On to Aston for coffee/brunch. Then back via the familiar route of Buckland and Stanford-in-the-Vale. The middle bit will very to get the distance about 40 miles. Friday evening: I'm late taking this on as ride leader, so don't have a plan yet, but will probably go for less than a full day and aim to do 40 miles and get us back to Grove by 2pm or so. Watch this space for details. Normally All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. |
||
Report:A short but eventful ride! Lee Ann Norris was the only other rider to be out. We set off towards Denchworth and saw a lone cyclist down in the road. The wet road, ungritted and now frozen was totally treacherous. He was alert and not bleeding, but unable to move his right leg.A few cars arrived and people offered help and a My Little Pony blanket. We called the ambulance and got both air and land versions, arriving within a couple of minutes of each other. I also called the Police on 101 about the state of the road and they said they would inform ‘Highways’. We decided to continue with a shorter ride. We walked along the icy stretch and gradually talked our ambitions downwards to turning left at Denchworth, heading for the A417 and via Challow into Wantage and then left to Grove. Just before Denchworth we met a racing cyclist out for a spin from Oxford and guided him away from an icy doom. The rest of the ride passed uneventfully. Unfortunately, neither Cornerstone, not the Bakery in Grove were open for a coffee so we headed for home after a princely 9.3 miles – but at least we were both still upright! | ||

Lizzie joined us on Lark Hill at the start of the cycle path. There's been a lot of hedge-cutting along the paths and roads, so in addition to mud, grit and potholes we had to look out for sharp twigs, but everyone made it round without incident. So; a ride heading west across the vale toward Shrivenham via Hatford and Shellingford and then back via the Ashbury cafe, Uffington and Denchworth. We divided into two groups to make it safely manageable. Thanks go to John T for leading the second group. Particularly impressive was the cunning device used to make sure the two groups didnâᅵᅵt bunch up - not actually loading the right ride and improvising where necessary! Quality . All went well however and the tea stop at Ashbury tea rooms was particularly welcome. Iâᅵᅵd let them know weâᅵᅵd be coming (about 10 of us!) and they took the increased numbers in their stride. Several people remarked on the improvements made over the years - with special accolades going to the almond croissants ðᅵ¥ᅵ! The return leg took us down Knighton hill where we saw a lovely stand of fallow deer and safely back to Grove. Group two arrived back safe and sound to round off a very enjoyable day.
