Riders:Andy PixtonChris Bailey Jo Little Katherine Boyce Lisa Footner Nick Dunton Sharon Bedford Riders = 7 Report:This was the first weekend ride of the spring / summer program - but no one told the weather. Flakes of snow were falling as we made it to the start. Despite the cold temperatures there were also some lovely spells of sunshine to warm us up (plus a few hills). The only significant shower was when we were in the cafe at Aston eating cake (hope the group appreciated just how much planning that took 😂😂😂. ) Revived by the large cake portions we then had a great ride back. Thanks for joining everyone. | ||

Riders:David JacksonDes Higgs Gerry Jones Karl Blake Lizzie Hardingham Lorna Swanton Stephanie Haddrell Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Report:A beautiful sunny morning for a ride out to view the bluebells at Badbury clumps. It was great to have 7 riders out including Des and Karl, Lorna and Steve, David and Gerry and Lizzie to accompany me and humour me on another floral themed ride... Once you've seen one Bluebell you've seen them all!We went out the normal way via Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking before heading up Fernham Hill and onto Little Coxwell to see the pig with the sunglasses, and a few Bluebells in the village. The A420 was very busy and patience was required to cross safely, which thankfully we did, before riding onto Great Coxwell Barn, a truly splendid sight which we paused to take in. Lorna and Steve left us there and enjoyed a welcome break and snack. We tackled another hill up to Badbury Clumps and stopped to see the bluebells which were just peeping through. Note to self do this ride 2 weeks latere next year!! We then went down to Coleshill, across to Buscot looking out for Jason Donovan as we went, but he was rather elusive. We then took an extended route around the beautiful villages of Little Farindon, Langford and Alvescot before stopping at Blakes for a very welcome lunch. With our tanks refuelled we headed home via Bampton, Buckland Marsh, and Charney Bassett. A lovely ride with great company, thanks to all. | ||

Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our Annual Spring Ride aimed at those who haven't been cycling much over the winter and want to dust off their bike and get the pedals turning again. Newcomers will be very welcome and it's an opportunity for club members to bring family and friends. Younger riders accompanied by a parent or guardian will be most welcome. To help us plan, please book your place by texting the ride leader not earlier than the Sunday before the ride. This year's ride will follow an essentially flat route around the lanes of the Vale of White Horse visiting the pretty villages of Lyford, Charney Bassett and Stanford-in-the-Vale, a round trip of about 15.5 miles. We'll have a refreshment stop on the Church green at Stanford - please bring a snack and a drink to slake your thirst. |

We welcomed Tamsin as a new (but fit and experienced) rider and went at a slightly faster pace than advertised as there were no families or riders who had just got back on their bikes after the Winter and early Spring. We rode out to Stanford via Lyford and Charney and stopped briefly on the green by the church before moving onto the Co-op where some ice creams were purchased! Des knew of a further green space down a side road by the primary school, so we sat there to eat and drink. We returned via Park Lane and returned to Denchworth and Grove via Asti Stud. Description:As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. You will receive confirmation or be advised that the ride is fully booked. A reserve list will be maintained. As you’ve probably guessed the aim of this ride will be to pass over the River Thames multiple times giving us some stunning views. This will happen in the first half of the ride. Starting from Grove we’ll head out through the Hanney’s & across to Abingdon - On -Thames, this is where we’ll go over our first Bridge. We’ll then have a further five bridges to cycle over along with some lovely views of the Thames as we pass through Culham, Appleford, Clifton Hampden, Dorchester, Shillingford, Wallingford & finally Goring. We’ll stop for lunch in Goring, giving us a choice of two really nice cafes to choose from. The village Cafe & Pierreponts Cafe. Both serve excellent food! If the weather is nice, then it will be possible to buy a takeaway & sit by the river. Once refreshed you’ll be glad to know that we are NOT cycling up Streatley Hill!! Instead we’ll head across Ashampstead Common passing on through the villages of Yattendon, Hampstead Norrey’s & Beedon. Oppositional tea stop at Saddleback Farm! We’ll then finish with the wonderful decent of Chain Hill. Ride distance 59 miles/ 94km. |

Riders:Andy PixtonEddie Little Jo Little John Tranter Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 11 Weather:![]() Report:We split into two groups with a small gap, with Jo leading the second group. Weather conditions were pretty good, mild with light cloud along with the sun showing it’s face from time to time! Traffic conditions were also very light throughout the ride. For a bank holiday this was a surprise, but I’m not complaining! I think I can safely say that as we passed over the Thames on more than one occasion, the views were pretty good! We stopped for lunch at the Chocolate Village cafe Goring where we all managed to sit outside for lunch. Service was very efficient & the food was very nice. After lunch we waved goodbye to the Thames & headed into the rolling countryside, a complete contrast to the morning’s ride bringing some scenic views of valleys & woods which made for an excellent ride back home. Thanks to you all for making this a special day! Many thanks to Jo for leading group two.Credit to Richard for the excellent group photo taken at Abingdon. | ||

Riders:David BridgeDes Higgs Ernie Trimble John Groves Karl Blake Kevin Hazell Patrick O'Leary Paul Bentley Roger Postbeschild Sally Bensoussis Stephanie Haddrell Terry Ryland Riders = 12 Report:What a gorgeous morning for a ride and so lovely to see 12 riders out, including Sally! With 12 we decide to split into 2 groups with Steph led the front group with Terry, David, Kev, Patrick and Sally, whilst Des led the second group of Roger, Karl, Ernie John and Paul. we headed out to Ardington via Laines Barn so lovely to see the sunshine and lambs. We met up as we crossed the 417 to go into Ardington and then did a circular tour of the village before using the cycle path to return to Wantage...Except Des and Roger's group went to Ginge ha ha. Unfortunately Karl had a problem with his nipple and had to walk back to Grove. We then went along Springfield road and Trinder road and Ormond road towards the Letcombes, the sun kept shining and the beauty of our local countryside was stunning! having tackled Holborn Hill we paused for a break and then watched Patrick spurred on by the smell of coffee whizz past us down into Childrey. A lovely relaxed coffee break and a chance to catch up with the second group, and great that Karl joined us too. So Steph's group decided they were having such a lovely morning we extended the planned route and went out to Westcott and Kinsgston Lisle before heading back via Baulking, Goosey and Denchworth. It felt a real priviledge to have great company and be able to visit some of our most beautiful local villages in glorious sunshine. On arrival at Old Mill Hall we said our goodbyes and I went in search of the second group, only to find them in Parsons, they decided to take the original shorter route back. | ||

Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.A nice gentle ride around the north Vale, including some unusual (and safe) crossings of the A420 and a tour of the rarely seen beautiful village centres of Longworth and Hinton Waldrist. Coffee stop options are restricted by limited opening, but I hope that an ice cream stop at the shop in Stanford in the Vale will do the job! 29 miles / 46km and reassuringly lacking in hills. So much so, that I had a few maths problems at the start until I'd realised I was miscounting the Rogers...Thanks to Steph for leading a second group. It was a smooth run to Appleton, with the added bonus of an unexpected bluebell wood near the A420/A338 junction. The lovely villages of Longworth and Hinton Waldrist never disappoint for views and photo opportunities. For various logistical reasons, the two groups took slightly different routes to Standford in the Vale, but we regrouped there and raided the Co-op for supplies. We then had the added bonus of finding Sarah L riding past - she joined us for the ride home, thus neatly replacing Sarah B who had headed for home earlier! Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This is a pre-bookable ride. Please book your place by texting the ride leader no sooner than the Wednesday before the ride (don't forget to include your name). Tonight is our monthly Pub Night with an optional stop at the Fox Inn, Denchworth towards the end of the ride. Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of 10-15 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:Just 3 of us on the 1* this evening for a figure of 6 loop out to Denchworth, Lyford and West Hanney. With a small group and familiar route, Michael took the opportunity to lead, which went very well - setting a steady 1* pace with regular stops in each of the villages. Centre of attention at our stop in Lyford was Di's new ebike conversion. On return to Grove, we cycled down to Vale Avenue to admire the wonderful display of tulips before going our separate ways. After the ride, Steve returned to Denchworth to join riders from the other groups for a convivial pint and meal at the Fox. Thanks everyone for a thoroughly enjoyable evening and to Michael for leading. | ||

It was a good sized group of 11 riders that turned out on a cool evening. A sign of the times is that three of the riders were on e-bikes, which are clearly gaining popularity and showed their benefit on the climbs. Thanks to Steph for providing the route as part of the pre-populated Tuesday evening 2* rides. It is a good, if challenging, route at this stage of the season. As this was "pub night" a number of us stopped at The Fox in Denchworth before heading home. | ||

5th Saturday Special - Tetbury and Castle Combe | 3* |
---|
Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Lydiard Park, Swindon |
Description:Update 23 Mar: Weather looking favourable! So far there are 6 people signed up, making a total of 8 with Nicole and myself. They are:Kath and Andy Jo and Ed Sharon B Roger P (who can offer a lift if needed). I'm about to book the pub for lunch, so would appreciate any others who want to come letting me know ASAP. Thanks! The 5th Saturday is always good for an away-day. This time I have chosen a route which begins at Lydiard Park on the west side of Swindon. The ride begins at 0900, and there are toilet facilities at the park that will be open beforehand. The route takes us north west towards Kemble to start with, before turning south to Tetbury for a coffee stop at 33km. We then head sort of southish via a meandering route to Castle Combe, before lunch at the Bell Inn at Yatton Keynell (70km). The route then heads north east, skirting the edge of Chippenham and Royal Wootton Bassett to arrive back at the start. Total distance is 101km, with 700m of ascent. I am happy to lead this group with up to 12 riders, which means there are 10 spaces to go around. Please email me or call on 07875 456521 if you want to ride. I will be booking lunch numbers, so early calls are recommended (coffee is on an ad hoc basis as the coffee shops in Tetbury are quite bijou!). |

Riders:Andy PixtonChris Bailey Eddie Little Jo Little Katherine Boyce Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Riders = 9 Weather:![]() ![]() Report:Well, what a fabulous day this turned out to be! We all met up successfully at Lydiard Park and, after letting a couple of hundred ParkRunners go first we headed off in crisp Spring sunshine en route to Tetbury. The lanes to the west of Swindon are generally quiet and mostly well-surfaced and we had a great ride to coffee. We stopped at 'Veloton', a bike shop and cafe in Tetbury, which proved to be an inspired recommendation from my boss. Quick service and excellent coffee and cake - what more could you want? Shortly after leaving Eddie suffered a broken gear cable. Sadly efforts to fix it failed (and the bike shop/cafe didn't have a mechanic at weekends) so he was left with just two gears for the rest of the day. Not that anyone noticed as Eddie "Iron Legs" Little made light of the hinderance and kept going regardless. There were many high points of the route, but perhaps the prettiest was the charming village of Castle Combe. Plenty of tourists, and we didn't stay long, but well worth the effort of climbing out of the valley after the visit. Lunch followed shortly afterwards, at an excellent and very efficient pub (The Bell at Yatton Keynell) and with over 70% of the route completed. We finished off with the last north-easterly leg, again through quiet lanes, back to the start. Thanks to all who made the ride such fun, and the consensus seemed to be that it's a route we would all like to do again. | ||
