Space is limited so please contact Ginny directly if you'd like to find out more about the sessions or to book a slot.

Andrew Robertson

Report:
Another good session. We are just beginning the harder sessions. I hope everyone stretched well.

It would still be fine to join in. If you are new to turbo-ing we can adapt things and that applies throughout the whole season.

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove 3*
Leader:
Nick Dunton
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
I’ve been asked to keep this fairly short so that family riders can get back relatively early for bonfire night celebrations! Prompt start at 1.00, therefore and no refreshment stop! Mostly good roads; cycle-paths between Abingdon and Sutton Courtenay and SC and Didcot are well-paved. No significant hills. We’ll be aiming for a brisk average pace of c. 25 k.p.h.

Should be back in Grove by 4.30 p.m. at the latest. Lights will be required, however, in case of unexpected hold-ups.

Route: Grove, Denchworth, West Hanney, Southmoor, Longworth, Appleton, Cumnor, Abingdon, Sutton Courtenay, Didcot, Harwell, East Hendred, Ginge, East Lockinge, West Lockinge, Grove. May vary last piece, depending on speed of group and lateness of hour.

Good ride - no problems. Rain held off but a little chilly. Roads greasy with lots of fallen leaves - felt very autumnal. Nice to welcome two new riders - Bill Flockton & Michael Brooke.

The cyclists (4 on tandems) outnumbered the driven on the first cold evening of the Winter. 10 was a lowish turnout, but ironically just about the right number for the darts and we hadan enjoyable evening. Food was good too.

Regular Wantage Ride 3*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
This may be an eccentric idea, but I am fancying some good hills for this one. Out via the Letcombes to Kingston Lisle and Uffington, I am tempted (for some reason) to do the Uffington White Horse loop just for fun before the ascent of Ashbury Hill and the long drop to Lambourne. Then over the Membury ridge and dropping down to Hungerford for lunch. After lunch we follow the valley through Kintbury and Marsh Benham before climbing the ridge again at Stockcross followed by a gradual climb out of Boxford to Brightwalton. The good news is we finish with a great swoop down Chain Hill back into Wantage! Distance about 60 miles/100km and riding pace 18-22km/h (11-14mph).

Cold but dry, weather about as good as we could expect this time of year. A great turn-out (also welcome to Dave Pollington, a mate of John Tranter's from Newbury).

Ride went according to plan, although there was a general consensus to miss out the Uffington White Horse loop, not because we didn't want the exercise, but more because it had disappeared into the clouds! Good lunch at the Tutti Pole in Hungerford.

Special kudos to Adrian for sticking with us on his first hilly 3* ride!

I really enjoyed this ride, I do hope I wasn't too much of a nuisance with people having to wait for me at the top of the hills.
I must train harder.
Thanks for another great Sunday out :)

This month we will head for the picturesque village of Aston Tirrold.

Report:
Brrr.... it was bitterly cold, but despite this, 13 brave souls headed along Cow Lane after a prompt start into a biting North Easterly. Pausing briefly at Steventon we were soon joined by Adrian who had cycled from OMH independantly and at a frantic 5* pace to catch us up. Well done Adrian ! :)

Arriving at Sutton Courtenay triangle we were met by John's wife Tracey who tagged onto the now 15 strong group. A fantastic turnout for a chilly winters day!

Pausing for a photo shot below Wittenham Clumps, we were soon winding our way through the villages of North and South Moreton, and onwards for a circular tour of Aston Tirrold, taken at a gentle pace and wary of the slippery roads. With the ramparts of Blewburton Hillfort (400 bc) to our left, we shortly arrived at Blewbury for a very welcome break at the recently opened Style Acre Tearoom, a cosy timber constructed building located in the grounds of Blewbury garden centre. Style Acre is a South Oxfordshire based charity, providing support and opportunities to adults with a wide range of learning disabilities. A real find, and in a great location for future rides !

Now nicely thawed out, a brisk climb of Chilton hill revealed the atmospheric skyline and a fading winter sunset, and with lights switched on we were soon making our way along NCN 44. Apologies are probably due at this point, as I successfully managed to shoot past the signpost in the now rapidly fading daylight. After a quick U turn we were soon back on track and heading for Ginge, followed by a swift detour to Ardington and Lockinge, and rounded off by a short ascent and (extremely chilly!) descent passing Lains Barn, to arrive back at OMH for a little after 5.00pm.

A really enjoyable afternoon on (and off) the bike. Thanks everyone for your company! :)
