Looking at the weather we decided that White Horse Challenge was a little ambitious, heavy rain and winds not ideal!
With much suprise 6 riders braved the elements, Steph, Lizzie, Des, Karl, Terry and Patrick; mad as a box of frogs!!
So we had a lovely flat ride out from OMH via Denchworth, Goosey, Baulking, Fernham, and Shellingford to Stanford for coffee. How pleased were we that the cafe was suitably transformed to accomodate cold and wet cyclists inside! Suitably refreshed we headed back home via Park Lane, Goosey and Denchworth.
A lovely ride and so great to be with such lovely company.

White Horse Cycle Challenge 2* 2*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
11:00 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Friday 4/12: Upgrading to 2* - still some places available.
A chance to tackle the White Horse Challenge in a relaxed 2* group. This is a pre-bookable ride limited to six riders. To book a place, please text your name to Steve before 8pm on Friday. You will receive confirmation or be advised that the ride is fully booked. A reserve list will be maintained - if there is sufficient demand we may be able to organise a second group.

We'll follow the route used for the new route sheet, out along the Springline through East Challow, Childrey, Sparsholt and Westcot before attempting the climb. Everyone can take the climb at their own pace (on two wheels or two feet) and enjoy the unfolding view across the manger and the vale as you near the top. We'll regroup for socially-distanced photos and refreshments at the top. Please bring our own mince pie and mulled wine (or alternative snack and warming tipple) and something to sit on (insulated mat or plastic bag) if necessary. We'll descend to Woolstone and return to Grove on the flat via Ufffington, Baulking and Goosey.

Giving that the weather forecast for Friday is looking wintery, I'm going for a slightly later start at 11am to allow the best chance of warmth and any lingering frost/ice to clear. Wrap up warm! Expecting to be back in Grove between 1:30 and 2pm.

Report:
Who would have thought we'd have such a bright, sunny and clear day after all the mist and drizzle of the last week? Perfect for taking on the challenge of White Horse Hill. Just 4 of us on the first club ride after the second lockdown but it was nice to be riding in a small group again. Jan joined us at the start, having already completed an early morning ascent, making this her ninth in a week!
We followed the route as planned. The sunshine had brought people out and the bridleway from East Challow to Childrey was busy with walkers, dog-walkers and cyclists, whom we had to pass with care.
After negotiating the U-bend before Britchcombe Farm we came across the local hunt, out in force with their hounds, crossing a field towards the road. Two mounted huntsman were in the road to slow down on-coming traffic. Although we stopped briefly to catch our breath before the climb, we did not linger with the hounds approaching!
Soon we were on the hill, each of us taking it at our own pace. We could see two cyclists ahead of us and soon a third came rushing down (I recognised Paul Bentley). Just before the top, it was a surprise to meet Steph and David, on foot, who had come to meet us - and with hot mince pies to boot!
At the top we discovered we had been following Yvonne and Jerry and a few minutes later Phil, Sara and Caroline arrived too. So while keeping our distances, it was very nice to see familiar faces. Photos were taken and we enjoyed the wonderful views while eating mince pies and sipping our drinks.
Then all too quickly it was time to descend. Arriving in Woolstone, we encountered another huntsman on horseback - slightly unnervingly cracking a whip to control a hound in front of him. Having passed cautiously, we had a very pleasant but uneventful ride back to Grove thereafter, arriving just after 1:30pm.
Thanks everyone for your company and to Steph and David for the hot mince pies. Congratulations to Gerry on his first White Hill ascent and best of luck to Jan as she continues her daily challenge over the coming week.

The ride had been moved from Thursday due to heavy showers and wind, and we chose Sunday as.. it was supposed to be the better day of the weekend! Still no dazzling sunshine, winds or rain were just perfect for a hard climb!
We met at OMH full of anticipation and a little trepidation, Des, Karl, David and myself with our two new riders Terry and Lizzie.
Heading out to Challow via Denchworth we rode along the footpath to Childrey which was a little muddy although thankfully quiet. As we headed on through Sparsholt and Westcott up to the springline all were in great spirits, that is until I gave my pre hill brief; ' it will be tough use your gears and change down early, take your time!, Des and Karl will advise re gear change; Des 'an e bike would be good' or Karl you can always roll back down, or walk!. Des...'Make sure you shout if you are going to stop!' So fully briefed and prepared we tackled the spring line with grace and finesse. The hill loomed although thankfully we couldn't see all of it. David went up first to keep warm and we didnt see him until he was poised with camera at the top. Lizzie and I took it slowly and helped it each up the hill; the temptation to stop and admire the view over the manger was not too great as we couldn't see it, ..and so we carried on up to be greeted by David with camera poised! terry was next up and so good to see him. Unfortunately Des had a technical at the foot of the hill and together he and Karl made their way up braving the elements and showing their tenacity. So very grateful to see Chris at the top with gorgeous home made mince pies and mulled wine which was amazing! As we were taking stock we spied Patrick climbing the Hill Great Job Patrick! the ride back , via Uffington Baulking and Goosey, was a breeze and it was so good to be able to ride with the group of great club members!

A very good bunch of riders on a very leisurely ride. Everybody handled Fawler Hill with great confidence. (Most had already successfully tackled the White Horse Challenge). We stopped at the bottom to take in the stone circle on the left (circa 2019) so not such an ancient monument!
We carried on through Westcot and Sparsholt to the cafe at Childrey, where we were well looked after with hot coffee and a cake if required. Here we met Paul and John and had a long chat about bikes. David departed earlier than the rest as he needed to get home.
All in all a good ride, good company, no mechanical incidents and the only weather was some fine drizzle. However we all noticed that it seemed to get colder as we returned through Denchworth and Grove.
Thank you one and all.

Report:
A lovely day for a ride. Perfect visibility and just a little wind from the southwest. It was a nice group, and we set off around the Vale in good spirits. Sadly, from Shellingford to Fernham we found ourselves on something resembling a motorway with ludicrous amounts of traffic in both directions and a very nasty close pass which came very close to being disastrous. It later transpired that the A420 was shut and this was clearly the primary diversion route. So we modified the route to head straight across to Uffington and fortunately peace descended once again. The great Hill loomed (as it does) but everyone tackled it very well and we had a triumphant reunion at the top (plus a few mince pies). The descent was fun and we had a great tailwind assisted return to Grove.

Thanks to all for great company.

The White Horse Cycle Challenge, 28 Nov - 13 Dec
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
TBC
Start Location:
Uffington White Horse Hill
Description:
For nearly 20 years, Cycling UK Wantage has organised a festive fund-raising event supporting Whizz-Kidz, the children’s mobility charity: the Annual Mince Pie Ride to White Horse Hill. Sadly this year, the normal arrangements will not be possible, but the urge to challenge ourselves before Christmas and support Whizz-Kidz remains. So, we are pleased to present the White Horse Cycle Challenge:

We challenge individual riders to climb the great Hill at a time of their choosing between 28 November and 13 December (on their own, in a household group or with one friend or small group in line with social distancing guidelines in place at the time), take a selfie or photo at the top for proof, get extra respect for taking their own mince pie up there and raise money for Whizz-Kids. Our target is to see 100 riders complete the challenge.

We have set up a donations page, here:

www.justgiving.com/fundraising/whitehorsecyclechallenge

and would welcome donations to support the efforts of all riders, whether from riders themselves, their family or friends.

The event is open to all to who enjoy a cycling challenge. We have contacted all the local cycling clubs. To help non regular or non-local cyclists give it a go, we are working on a route sheet from Grove and Wantage to White Horse Hill and back. Watch this space!

We ask participants to post their photos on the club Facebook page at:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/cyclingukwantage

or to send by email to: info@cyclingukwantage.org.uk

This address can also be used for enquires about the event.

Take care, keep safe and enjoy the challenge!

A beautiful day for a ride sunshine light wind and great company!
We got a wiggle on as Ernie had to be back so stormed to Blakes in an hour. The coffee was amazing, Marmalade and chocolate bun to die for, and the turkey burgers monstrous, which may account for the plethora of cyclists in the garden. Lovely to see Paul and John too!
As we left Clanfield, we maintained a good pace and were delighted that all made it up the hill into Faringdon without any trouble, and paused at the top for a brief history lesson from Des! The return home was uneventful, mostly with the wind and a pleasure, although the drains on the left of the A417 are a hazard to be avoided.
In all a very enjoyable morning Thanks for the company!

What a beautiful morning for a ride! Out through Letcombes towards Childrey , the wind was against us and getting stronger, with clouds looming on the horizon we decided to change the route to go through Childrey and stop for coffee, a great decision as whilst we were enjoying our cakes the heavens opened! we headed off towards Kingston Lisle and as we approached Sparsholt it poured, well we were wet anyway so continued to Westcott and along the springline to the Blowing stone crossroads, challenging but invigorating! The rain abated and the sun began to come out a splendid view of the Folly in bright sunshine to our left as Ed reminded me of the bridge which is liable to flooding as we descended from Kingston Lisle. So we road through water about a foot deep with great care! From this point the journey home was a breeze a ride with great company incredible positivity, and a real taste of the great English weather!

What a great final 3* ride before entering tier 4. Bit windy, bit cold but also good company, coffee stop and rainbows!

The leader was a bit faffy over getting going (user gps error (doh) ). This resulted in the first route change - using the Letcombes and Childrey instead of the Springline Road. This kept us away from the large amount of traffic for longer. An uneventful ride to Lechlade - despite the busyness of the road in! An early, socially distanced coffee stop in the market square. Glad to report that Lynwoods is as good for takeaway as eat in :). Lechlade even put on a full rainbow for us (clap)

We then went for an explore of the north of Lechlade before picking our way across to Clanfield. Littleworth Hill was our last obstacle before a return to the Vale. As ever we seemed to be riding in to the wind much longer than we had it on our back but didn’t stop us enjoying ourselves.

Here's hoping it won’t be long before we are group riding again.

Report:
A very enjoyable steady ride with no incidents. We rode to Munchies at the Log Cabin at Southmoor (it was second choice as Stanford coffee shop was closed). We were well looked after by the lovely ladies and very good value as well.

A very enjoyable ride, which turned out to be the last before lockdown.

Thanks for coming, everyone!
