Riders:David BridgeDes Higgs John Tranter Karl Blake Patrick O'Leary Roger Postbeschild Stephanie Haddrell Terry Ryland Riders = 8 Report:Having considered cancelling due to rain and the possibilty of by bike getting dirty, the rain stopped, and a late flurry of interest pursuaded me to go for it!It was great to see 8 riders and we met in calm, dry, if grey conditions. As we headed out to Denchworth the drizzle commenced which required a short break to put on waterproofs. A very pleasant ride with little wind and quiet roads out to Ardington via Steventon Hendred and the Icknield way as planned. feeling decidedly cooler we were all ready for coffee and cake, and were disappointed to find the cafe shut for today only! After a brief consultation we decided to try the cafe on the new estate run by Marco Polo and we were not disappointed; room for 8 inside and lovely coffee and cakes, and John T even bought his lunch. Once warm and reenergised we made it back to Grove via Charlton. A lovely ride inspite of the weather- good to get out and great company, Thanks to all.

Report:Lovely day for a ride. For a moment at the start - the rider leader's bike had other ideas - ie faulty inner tube that would not inflate (was fine when I left home...). After a battle with the tyre the inner tube was replaced and all was well, so the start was only delayed a little.The four of us met up with Susan in Wantage at the start of the track to Ginge - Susan pointing out that I had no helmet:- had- cycled from Grove without me - or anyone else - noticing....in the shenanigans with the inner tube - I forgot the helmet! - Too late to turn back so ploughed on anyway. Possible short cut was eschewed for the full length as the weather was fine and we were on schedule to arrive in plenty of time for the tea stop in East Hanney (those priorities...). Great to be out in the sunshine with temperatures very mild for November. Great stop at the Black Horse pub where we were well catered for with the "kinder" chocolate treat, plus hot drinks. On exiting the pub, the temperature had dropped markedly, so was a somewhat chilly stretch back, via West Hanney & Denchworth. All back safely by 4pm before dusk. Thanks for a great ride everyone

We arrived in Abingdon via Peep-O-Day Lane and parked up at Annie's. The weekend staff were very efficient and it proved to be a very warm suntrap, enjoyed by all. The return leg, via Gozzards Ford, proved a little slower as we were now into the previously enjoyed wind. Coffee back at Grove was taken by most of the group. A shower of rain did brew up then and I caught a few drops on the way home.... Good to see LeeAnn out on a club ride after some time off.

Report:A select group of 3 gathered at Old Mill Hall for a ride out towards Wallingford. Steph, David and thank the lord for Karl!We had an uneventful ride out to Didcot via Icknield way and the disused railway track from Upton. We then navigated the labrynth of cycle paths through Didcot, such great paths! We were making good time as we tackled Sires Hill and looking forward to refreshments at Root one when David's chain broke! Thank the lord for Karl! No fuss just a simple matter of removing the broken link and replacing it; what a star! We made it safely to root one and enjoyed coffee and cake. We then decided to err on the side of caution and changed the return route to avoid the hills of Wittenham clumps. All in all a very pleasant ride with good company, although of course we missed our usual partners in crime! Thanks again Karl the very modern cyclist!

White Horse Cycle Challenge kick-off ride | 2* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A special ride to kick-off this year's White Horse Cycle Challenge and a chance to tackle the hill in a relaxed 2* group. We'll follow the route in our White Horse hill route sheet with a minor diversion in Grove due to the closure of the A338 cyclepath. A round trip of about 20 miles.Out along the Springline through East Challow, Childrey, Sparsholt and Westcot before attempting the climb. Everyone can take the climb at their own pace (on two wheels or two feet) and enjoy the unfolding view across the manger and the vale as you near the top. We'll regroup for photos and refreshments at the top. Please bring your own mince pie and mulled wine (or alternative snack and warming tipple) and something to sit on (insulated mat or plastic bag) if you would like. After taking in the views, etc, we'll descend steeply to Woolstone and return to Grove on the flat via Ufffington, Baulking and Goosey. Possible coffee stop at the Fox and Hounds in Uffington, if we need to warm up! Please let Steve know by text beforehand if you are planning to come. |
||
Report:It was a much better morning than expected for the start of this year's White Horse Cycle Challenge. Bidding farewell to Karl and David as they set off from OMH on Steph's 2* ride there were 4 of us determined to conquer the hill. Avoiding the A338, we used the newly surfaced cyclepath along Denchworth Road to Stockham and wiggled our way through to the A417 and East Challow. The unmade section of the track to Childrey was dotted with large puddles but there was just room to navigate a winding path between. We stopped briefly by the pond in Childrey - nice to see it full again after all the recent rain. On through Sparsholt, Westcot and past Kingston Lisle to the foot of the hill. We stopped to catch our breath before the ascent.As the others set off and I waited to take some pics, I could hear the steady clip-clop of hooves approaching rapidly from behind. The hunt! Fortunately, the two leading riders reassured me that they would not be following us up the hill and duly turned right. The pack of hounds was an impressive sight. I then set-off in pursuit of my fellow riders, passing John who had stopped to take his own pics by Dragon Hill, and on to the top. It was a little breezy but not far off perfect late autumn conditions at the viewpoint. The others soon followed. the hill conquered, we duly consumed mince pies, drank coffee and took pics while enjoying the views. We eventually dragged ourselves away, dropping down past the main car park to Woolstone. A lovely wind-assisted ride back to Grove ensued (we decided not to stop in Uffington). A most enjoyable ride to kick-off this year's challenge - thank you to my amiable companions. Good luck and enjoy, to all those who will follow.

Report:I picked up this ride from Eddie as he was, unfortunately, unwell.The proposed route was duly followed, including a stop for coffee at Aston Pottery. This proved to be very well timed as we got in before The Phoenix, Abingdon Freewheelers and sundry others arrived! A very select group of three riders - I don't lead many 3 star rides but a decent (unassisted) pace of 23.2 kph was maintained. Joy and Barry waited for me after the only hill up into Faringdon though! A thankfully rain and wind free ride.

Report:Damp and cold this evening. We kept low, heading East out of Wantage, and wiggling our way to Rowstock and then Harwell woods before returning.David's slow puncture managed to seal itself. But Luc broke a chain, we managed a repair and that got us back to Wantage.
