Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.I keep leading Oxford rides and we keep running out of time to climb the hill from Bayworth to Boars Hill. So, this ride gives the climb due attention. We ride over to Abingdon and then head to Sunningwell to do the climb. Once we descend again to Wootton, we head over to Appleton and Hinton Waldrist and then down to Stanford in the Vale for a shop stop. Then a gentle rode home. 37 miles, one big climb and a good pace throughout. |

Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Talboys Jan McCabe John Groves John Tranter Katherine Boyce Ken Pelton Nick Stokell Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Richard Saunders Riders = 11 Weather:Report:A good group set off from Grove, augmented by Richard S joining us in Steventon. We kept a good pace along to Sunningwell and the great climb of Bayworth Hill was assisted by some lovely smooth new tarmac. Frankly, the climb didn't seem that bad after all the hype...A nice descent to Wootton and then a long stretch into the breeze back to Stanford in the Vale, where we got lucky as the wonderful Huddle cafe was just closing, but rapidly re-opened when they saw us arrive! Great coffee, tea and cakes. Thanks to all for a nice ride at a good pace. | ||

Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.This ride will be in the MIDDLE of the grade. A nice loop around the west Vale tonight. Out via Denchworth and up the small hill through West Challow before cutting across to Childrey, Sparsholt and Westcot. The bonus was the lovely swoop down Kingston Lisle Hill. There were some threatening clouds around but it turned out to be a rather glorious evening with lovely views around the Vale.Thanks to all for a good ride. | ||

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.This ride will be in the MIDDLE of the grade. A while since we've done Hackpen Hill from Sparsholt. Then down to Seven Barrows and over Blowingstone Hill so that I can test my new brakes! Through Kingstone Lisle before a flat return via Goosey and Denchworth. Might be as well to bring lights just in case we get held up for any reason. |

Riders:Chris WaltersDavid Talboys John Groves John Quinn Karen Froud Katherine Boyce Ken Pelton Nick Dunton Ursula Hallam Riders = 9 Weather:Report:A bit of a grey evening but everyone seemed to be looking forward to climbing some hills . 9 of us set off, we said goodbye to Karen halfway up Holben Hill following a slow puncture. We passed the foot of Hackpen before dropping down to Sparsholt to make sure we climbed it fully!The headwind meant we had to peddle down to Lambourn instead of freewheeling. Then back up to the Ridgeway and down Blowingstone Hill. All refrained from undertaking kamikaze maneuvers at the junction with the Springline road, much to the leaders relief . Then a brisk return to Grove. Yet another enjoyable club Tuesday night ride. Thanks to Dave T for sweeping. | ||

Leader:Andy Pixton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly.This ride will be in the MIDDLE of the grade. A flatter route than last week but longer. Up to Curbridge in an anti-clockwise loop, taking in Friford, Tubney, Fyfield, and Standlake, returning via Bampton and the only climb of the ride, Buckland Hill. Plenty of fast roads, and an interesting crossing of the A420, with scope for shortening the route if we're running late. |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Smith Frank Schroer Jason Jones Nick Fisher Nick Stokell Peter Cowan Phil Stubbings Riders = 8 Weather:Report:What looked like being a three rider event became eight , with a few last minute arrivals.The weather forecast had promised a tail wind to Ducklington and a lighter head wind on the return. The reality was a much kinder, less directional wind, with some dark brooding clouds and a few raindrops towards the end of the ride. As daylight diminishes through the summer, it was important to set a good pace from the outset. As we turned down the bridleway to the tunnel under the A420, someone yelled "cyclocross". It was an interesting detour, and traffic-free. With the lead changing frequently, we managed half the ride on the hour, allowing for a more relaxed return. Having climbed Buckland Hill, and with plenty of subdued daylight remaining, the mood turned positively 2*, as we cruised home. Thanks to all who turned out. A compact, friendly group. | ||

Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.This week, will head out via Stockham, Letcombes - a small matter of Holborn Hill, then down to Childrey, and back via the track to East Challow, then back to Grove. A round trip of about 12 miles. |
||
Report:Select little group tonight... sunny evening, where were all the others?Nice smooth ride. Slight mishap on the off road path put of Wantage, Sarah catching her handlebar on a railing - quickly descending from the bike to the floor in zippo time! No real harm done though, and after "synchronising" the handle bars with the front wheel (ie straightening up!), and tightening courtesy of handy tool carried by Ian) we were on the move again. Various small hills, and the main one of the ride - Holborn Hill - were mastered well before enjoying the descent into Childrey and back to Challow. Option of a back path from Wantage to Grove was declined - for some it was out of the way, and was not fancied, understandably, by Sarah after the earlier experience! A good ride though. | ||

Saturday morning off-road ride | 2* |

Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Goblin's Glen layby off A4130 |
Description:Our monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. These will be on the second Saturday of each month at 10am from various locations.They will be about 20 miles mostly off-road and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). The terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. Start location OS Grid Ref: SU 657 889 |
||
Report:This was an untested route through Nuffield, Nettlebed, Warburg Nature Reserve, Maidensgrove and Bix, so some navigational issues might have been predicted - and indeed were encountered, largely due to my incompetence with the GPS - so my thanks to David and Andy for their patience. Nevertheless some good tracks found and a very enjoyable ride. Quite a few horses, one puncture (mine ), lots of nettles and, mysteriously, dead squirrels. | ||

Boulter's Bash | 3* |

Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Pangbourne |
Description:3* special starting in Pangbourne and following the route of the Boulter's Bash audax. 107km with five major Chilterns climbs in the first half. Second half of the route is flatter, if less picturesque. Ride is a "3* all day ride", so reasonable pace throughout but no racing and we'll re-group at the top of hills.We will stop for lunch stop at Jenner's Café, Riverside Gardens, Maidenhead - http://www.jennerscafe.com/index.php Start 9.30 a.m. in Village Hall carpark, Pangbourne [on main road, on right just after passing under railway bridge and opposite the Bentley showroom]; free parking Sunday. NB this is a different carpark from previous years, with toilets! Route: Pangbourne, Whitchurch, Goring Heath, Chazey Heath, Toker's Green, Kidmore End, Sonning Common, Bolt's Cross, Greys Green, Bix, Middle Assendon, Skirmett, Frieth, Marlow, Winter Hill, Cookham, Maidenhead, Bray, Holyport, Moneyrow Green, Touchen-End, Paley Street, Shurlock Row, Winnerish, Arborfield Cross, Spencer's Wood, Grazeley Green, Theale, Bradfield, Pangbourne. |

Riders:Andy PixtonChris Walters David Talboys Ian Moore James Blagden Jason Jones Karen Robertson Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Mark Irons Michael Hardiman Nick Dunton Nick Stokell Richard Kidd Riders = 14 Report:Excellent route. Excellent weather. Excellent company. Good to welcome a strong contingent from Reading CTC and some new faces. The Chiltern ascents in the first section were as challenging as ever: up and down! The Bix descent was used as an “up” by the off-road ride on Saturday – an indication of the state of the road surface! Jenner’s provided excellent refreshment, and we took a much-needed ice-cream stop in Theale. We upped the pace a little on the flatter, afternoon sections – despite a headwind - until the nasty rollers before Bradfield slowed the peloton. Some of us were hanging-on with gritted teeth on the switchbacks through Dark Lane before we reached the final swoop down Pangbourne hill. Thanks to the sweepers: Andy, Dave, Louis, Chris, Nick. | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.I hope this isn't cheating, but I realised we hadn't done Hackpen since June, and everyone seemed to like going down Blowingstone, so a repeat route: Through the Letcombes and up our favourite pair of little hills: Holborn and Hackpen. Then we carry on down the other side towards Lambourn, take a right back over Seven Barrows, down (mercifully, down) Blowingstone Hill, then also down Kingston Lisle Hill and via Goosey and Denchworth home. NB: please bring lights as the nights are drawing in. |

Will be hilly.Late Modification to ensure we finish in the light- we'll head straight along the spring-line road, climb Dragon Hill, then through Uffington to climb Blowingstone and return through Letcombe. Last Tuesday's ride was flat so this week we'll give some of the hills a go. In order Holborn, Hackpen, Dragon, Blowingstone & Hackpen from the Lambourn side with re-group at the top of each. Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A figure of eight ride to Pusey, using a little frequented bridleway (easy off-road track) through the Pusey estate. Out via Denchwoth and Charney Bassett to Pusey back via Gainfield, Charney Bassett, Lyford and Denchworth, a round trip of about 14 miles.Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:A few spots of unforecast rain at the start didn't deter our small group of 6 riders and the conditions soon improved as we cycled out to Denchworth.The bridleway and estate road through Pusey used to be a regular route on Tuesday evenings (a decade or so ago), but fell out of favour with the rise of road bikes. However, it provides a welcome and quiet change for summer use, and is ideal for a slightly longer 1* evening ride. There is a short grassy stretch through a wood which is bumpy in places, and a short field crossing that is well trodden down. Apart from that it is all easy-going. And it was new to some of the group. On the return the temperature seemed to drop quite noticeably then as we came through Denchworth the sun descended below the clouds to light up the countryside in a warm yellow glow. With the setting sun behind us, we followed our very long shadows back into Grove with a rainbow ahead of us. Stunning. Thanks everyone for an enjoyable ride. | ||

Joint Easy Saturday afternoon ride with Isis Cyclists | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Seacourt Park & Ride, Botley Road, Oxford |
Description:This month we'll be joining the Isis Cyclists group for a tour of the byways and backroads of Oxford. The 16-mile route takes us round Oxford, inside the ring road and avoiding the city centre, using tow paths, cycle lanes and quiet roads.Meet at the Seacourt Park and Ride at 1.45 pm for a 2.00 pm departure. From there we cross the Botley Road onto Hinksey Lane which leads us to Willow Walk - an ancient path into Oxford. We drop down onto the Thames tow path for a while, cross Port Meadow to reach the Oxford canal, then follow the canal up to Wolvercote. From Wolvercote we wiggle through Summertown on to the Marston Ferry cycle path and then through the back streets of Marston to Headington Hill which we climb using Harberton Mead. From there we cycle through a bit of the Brookes campus, over the bridge towards the tennis courts and South Park. We then have a nice downhill swoop to join the Barracks Lane cycle path which leads us up to Cowley Marsh. Then it’s through the Florence park area to Iffley village which leads us to the Thames cycle path. We’ll stop for afternoon tea at the Isis pub before returning to the Park and Ride along the river towpath. Some of the paths we will be using on this ride are frequently used by cyclists and, although off-road, are fine unless it has been raining heavily, in which case we will take alternative routes.To see the route on Mapometer, click on the link below. The ride leader is Karen Wolff: karen@wolffs.info. Update 12/6/15 John and Carin are away this weekend but liked the sound of the joint ride route so they downloaded it and rode it for themselves last week. Their verdict was "extremely fascinating" but John did warn that there are a few rougher stretches and that skinny road tyres aren't recommended. |
||
Report:Many thanks to Karen from Isis for leading this fascinating ride for us. We circled Oxford visiting parts I've not seen before (particularly around the Brookes Campus and Headington). With about 80% of the route on cyclepaths, bridleways or towpaths there were some great finds along the way if I can remember them for future use...We had a very interesting group of 10 riders- 3 regulars from Wantage, 3 from Isis and 4 visitors, including Lara newly arrived from Spain (who hired a bike for the ride), Lucy's brother Guy from Worthing, Karen's husband Dick on his recumbent and Martin from Didcot (a potential new Wantage rider) on an ICE recumbent trike (amazing machine). Not the easiest terrain for a 'bent trike, but we were impressed to see Martin's skill in manoeuvering around and under some of the many obstacles. Cream tea/beer was taken as the Isis Tavern, who must bake the largest scones in the world. Unfortunately, we were disturbed somewhat by wasps that were attracted to the strawberry jam. The stretch of Thames towpath back to the Abingdon Road was very busy due to the Oxford City boat club regatta. This was just one of the many things/places it would have been interesting to linger over - it would be quite possible to spend a full day rather than just an afternoon enjoying this ride. Thanks again to Karen for leading, Liz from Isis for sweeping and everyone for your company on a thoroughly enjoyable ride. It was a shame that there were so few of us from Wantage but I know that several who would have come were away. | ||

Hungerford Re-explored | 3* |
---|
Leader:Chris Walters |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Hungerford Town Hall |
Description:A decidedly lumpy 3* ride to the South of Hungerford.Classic lumps to be climbed include Walbury Hill from Faccombe, Combe Gibbett, and Linkenholt, before heading to Crofton Pumping Station for lunch. After lunch we head over to Pewsey for the classic Alton Barnes climb and down to Marlborough for a much flatter return to Hungerford; possibility of afternoon tea in Marlborough or Ramsbury. 105km and 1100+m of climbing - although we will wait while everyone climbs the hills, please join this ride if you are sure of your climbing ability on a long ride. Let me know if you're planning to come so I can book tables for lunch - cutoff is 17:00, Wednesday 12th August please. Note that car parking in Hungerford is not free on a Saturday, which includes the pay-and-display all up the main street. I suggest you either park at the station car park at the weekend daily rate of £1.50, or find discreet off-street parking and share lifts wherever possible. 11:00 14/08/2015 Update: Weather looking OK, so the ride is definitely on Please note, this week's rain will wash flint into the lanes - please ensure you have good tyres on your bike in good condition, and the means to repair (m)any of the p-things! |

After a little diversion in the Inkpen area, we added David and Ursula to the ranks of grimpeurs, for what was to be quite a strenuous morning, ascending Walbury, Combe and Linkenholt hills before arriving bang on time at Crofton for a very leisurely lunch. Jon and Karen headed back home and we made use of the flatter terrain to up the pace down to Pewsey, then up the Alton Barnes climb and down into Marlborough, where we lost Ken twice, the second time permanently. A delightful potter back to Hungerford along the Ax and Kennet valleys was only punctuated by a tea and cake stop at Cafe Bella in Ramsbury, where the wasps entertained. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Adrian West |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.A long 2* leisurely paced ride out to the pretty Cotswold village of Bibury. I have listed this ride as a 2* instead of the usual 3* regular Wantage ride as it's not particularly hilly with only a few lumps. I would also like to encourage more 2* riders out on all day touring rides as the thought of 3* for some can be intimidating. This will be a leisurely fun and enjoyable ride for regular 2* and 3* riders, bear in mind it will be around 100km. I will need to book a table for lunch at an eatery in Bibury so if you intend on coming please let me know as soon as possible. There are a few venues in close proximity to each other if you wish to explore and forage when you get there and not have a pub lunch. Route: Wantage Market Place out to Baulking via the A417, Fernham, Little Coxwell, The Great Barn at Great Coxwell, Coleshill, Lechlade, Fairford and lunch at the pretty Cotswold village of Bibury. I intend on booking lunch at the Catherine Wheel Pub but there are other food options nearby in the village if needed. Once refueled we head through the village to Coln St Aldwyn, Southrop, Broughton Poggs, Bampton (possible icecream/ tea stop) Buckland, Charney Bassett, Denchworth, Wantage Market Place. Expect to be back in Wantage late afternoon. UPDATE: 14/08 Weather forecast (at time of this update) is warm and dry with very little wind so the ride should be quite pleasant. I have booked a table for 10 at the Catherine Wheel pub in Bibury, but this can be added to by early Saturday night if anyone wants to make a last minute decision to come along. There are a few other venues including a cafe and tea shop if you don't fancy a pub lunch. Please let me know as soon as possible if you wish to come along and have lunch at the pub so I can make the booking larger. If you fancy coming on the ride and not have lunch at the pub you can just turn up without letting me know. Please note the ride starts from Wantage Market place at 10am. |

We stuck to a good 2* pace and managed a good comfortable ride for all. Not too slow and not too fast either. We arrived at Bibury slightly early, but were catered for nicely by the Catherine Wheel pub. We then made our way through the Cotswolds and Thames Valley to Bampton garden center where we were joined by a tiny young Robin called crumb by the staff. He helped finish off the leftover bits of cake we placed on the floor for him before we left. The usual climb to Buckland and steady cruise through the Vale and we made it back to Grove/ Wantage as planned just before 5pm. A perfect and enjoyable touring ride. | ||

Riders:Adam ClarkAndy Cowan David Smith Jason Jones Jonty Ward Nick Fisher Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Riders = 8 Weather:Report:With the welcome addition of Adam Clark forming a formidable climbing triumvirate with Peter and Nick, I did hear the words 5* mentioned on more than one occasion but credit to them, there are no egos they were happy waiting and when the time came, dragged the rest of us along.With noticeably improving climbing from Jason and Jonty we made decent time up Manor and up past the West Berks GC, where Mr David Smith did a long fast turn to Boxford although I'm sure he must have spent the last 3 or 4 miles wondering how Mr Jarvis didn't know what the flick of the elbow meant; David I've been wondering the same for years! After a free ride the triumvirate vote tipped it in favour of the steep climb to Peasemore, I think they stitched us up but it was worth it, the sun was setting, not a car around and the views reminded us why we go cycling. Coming down Chain was a joy, if not a little lonely! A good group of like minded cyclists, easy to lead, thanks gents. | ||

Leader:John Stamp |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.This evening a 9 mile scenic ride visiting Ardington with a 3 mile optional loop to Ginge. Route : A338 cycle path, Charlton, Lord Nelson, cycle track (route 44) to Lockinge & Ardington; climb up to A417 & down the other side past Lains Barn to join the A388 to return to Grove. There is a optional 3 mile loop with climb, from Lockinge to Ginge returning via A388 to Lains Barn. Fair number of inclines along the route but plenty of stopping places if needed. |
||
Report:We enjoyed a good weather and no winds of any consequence. The loop to Ginge was undertaken. Average speed was 10.1mph, and considering the undulating nature of the ride was an excellent average for a 1* ride. | ||

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know.Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any 2. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
||
Report:Dry once again and 5 of us out enjoying the Ridgeway.We went up Crab Hill and Lark Hill, then up to the Ridgeway. Then down opposite Betterton and up to Scutchamer's Knob. Not wanting a particularly long ride we then headed back to Ginge for the classic descent - riding very well! And back via Lockinge and Crab Hill. One reason for not making it too long was that some of us were planning an end-to-end of the Ridgeway on Saturday, and after the ride we had a planning session - in the pub of course. Which I am now glad to report that 4 of us succeeded in completing! | ||

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 2* |

Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.The plan is to ascend the Ridgeway via Court Hill, then explore the downland villages of Brightwalton and Leckhampstead before stopping for tea at the excellent Saddleback Farm Shop. It's then just a whizz down Chain Hill and back to Grove. This route is undulating throughout, that is the nature and beauty of the downs, so a chance to try out some hills at a comfortable pace with plenty of opportunties to stop and admire the view from the top. Approx. 43 km (26.5 miles) |

It was great to be out and obviously lots of others thought so too. A dauntingly large group for my first Saturday lead, however, despite the numbers and the terrain, we managed to stay together pretty well.After the climb out of Letcombe we took a lovely meander through some of my favourite West Berkshire villages. Everyone coped well with the undulations and seemed to enjoy the quiet lanes. The only slight downside was a painfully slow stop at Saddleback farm shop. It was great to have Mavis, Lou and Brian join us on route and, welcome back to Alan; hope to see you on another ride soon. Thanks everyone for a most enjoyable ride. | ||

Newbury Series - Le Grand | 3* |
---|
Leader:David Smith |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Newbury - see below for details and directions |
Description:This month the Newbury Series takes you on a journey to sights you wooden believe!An early warm-up climb taking us to views in all directions is followed by a trip through the tranquil leafy lanes of Hampshire to the wide-open tank-sized roads of Wiltshire and the Salisbury Plain. Ticking off a couple of sights (optional stony track here) we will stop for lunch at around 60km at the Friar Tuck cafe in Amesbury - bring snacks for mid-morning fueling if you need it. Our return route follows the Hampshire Avon north and traverses Plain territory again to reach Collingbourne Ducis where a steady climb to the windmill at Wilton rewards us with a refreshment stop. The final leg is via Shalbourne and Ham and maybe we'll throw a couple of pimples in but really that depend on how the legs are feeling - we can put it to the vote. If you let me know you intend to ride then we'll be sure to wait for you at the start. Meet at The Chase National Trust Car Park (free), off Station Road, Woolton Hill. From the A34: Follow this route or directions below: Driving south past Newbury on the A34, leave at the A343 junction signed 'Highclere, Wash Common'. Turn left at the roundabout signed 'Newbury, Wash Common'. Then 2nd left, signed 'Enborne Row, East Woodhay, Ball Hall' and also for The Furze Bush Inn and The Yew Tree Garden Centre. On crossing under the A34, take the first left into Station Road. The car park is a short way down on the left-hand side. |

Riders:Alex PethybridgeAndy Pixton David Smith Katherine Boyce Nick Stokell Nicole Pethybridge Richard Kidd Ursula Hallam Riders = 8 Weather:Report:More a demi-grande than a grande, but with some sweet surprises to make up for it...Firstly, big up to all the guys for turning out with the knowledge that the day was not going to remain dry. With heavy rain coming up from the south there was no way we were going to miss it. However, undaunted we headed out. An early puncture was quickly dealt with before the climb up towards Walbury Hill which had us all nicely warmed up. Cruising down to Hurstbourne Tarrant and along to Vernham Dean, the rain arrived earlier than anticipated before the leg-stretching Conholt Hill. It didn't take long before the roads were rivers, and the feet were soaked. As it showed no sign of letting up, and finger-tips turned white, an impromptu coffee stop was called for and did thankfully arrive at last in Tidworth at the Chefs Delight. The staff batted not an eyelid at the arrival of 8 soggy-bottomed boys and girls dripping on their marbled floor, and we were promptly served hearty breakfasts, jacket potatoes and large mugs of steaming tea and coffee. Just the ticket! Recommended for any further adventures in this direction. With the rain showing no sign of abating, the question had to be asked whether to continue outwards or start to head homewards. Although warm inside, heading further into wet and cold plain terrain was hardly an attractive proposition so the vote went to the latter. Google provided us with a route through Ludgershall to join our homeward route at Collingbourne Ducis and we were off, leaving a small lake and a 'Caution - Wet Floor!' sign in our place. Clearly, having made this decision, the rain started to ease, making the climb along the Fair Mile true to its name followed by a freewheeling descent to Wilton Windmill corner. It was obviously too early for a refreshment stop which was just as well as we were too early for the refreshment cabin which doesn't open until 2pm. But we had a browse around anyway and a group photo. After this things really started looking up. The sun came out for the delightful stretch through the villages of Shalbourne and Ham and the alternative tea stop at the bakery at the Crown and Garter in Inkpen was also bathed in sunshine, proved cycle-friendly, and provided 'unctuously delicious' cakes! Another recommendation for future rides! At this point the group split into two, with a couple heading straight for home and the rest of us for a final Walbury Hill climb where I have to admit the rain did descend once more. The grande finale back at the car park was a low flyover by a Vulcan! So having lost a plain somewhere in the middle, we found our plane at the end! Thanks to everyone for a really sociable and up-beat ride despite the conditions. | ||

It was actually pretty pleasant with some late summer evening sunshine.The group made excellent progress right at the middle of the 3* grade. Most people removed their waterproofs before the climb to the top of Hackpen which didn't seem to trouble anyone. The closed road at Childrey meant we had it to ourselves! We made such good progress that we added on a loop at the end to make the most of the last rays of Sun although Jon had to do it with half a saddle. Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly.End of season chance for a bit of fun for the good climbers and descenders that fancy going for a PB or 2 and for the rest of us to get a bit of practice. Into Challow ,up past the cricket club, drop into Letcombe, up Court Hill, down Manor, up Chain, a right a few miles on to cut back to the Shefford road back towards Wantage and down Manor again, Challow and flat to Denchworth for a pint. Obviously lumpy so if you`re one of the fittest bring your sarnies, there will be a bit of hill top waiting to do ! Saying that we will need to get a wiggle on due to the light, please make sure to bring yours. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. |

Riders:Adam ClarkAndy Cowan Frank Schroer Jason Jones Nick Fisher Nick Stokell Phil Ward Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Perfect. The rain stopped, the sun came out, we didn't get lost, no mechanicals, a decent route for a change and all 7 riders went for a pint!Everything went to plan, some aggressive climbing with a couple top 10s from Nick and Adam, the Manor descents paid us back for the immediate Chain climb just after the drop down from the Court Hill effort, but no problem for anyone. The Newbury to Shefford road cut through was the highlight as the sun came out as we blasted down the slight drop all tucked up tight behind Franks lead-out, a free fast blast, just my sort of cycling. Determined to be at the Fox by 8ish we held a good pace before another fast drop by most, down Manor then out through Challow and a sprint to the bar for 8.05. It's always good to get a new rider but even better when they come the week after so a big welcome to Adam. For me it was the last 4* of the season (but please support the last one next week) and it has been very satisfying to see the new riders join the Club, 3* riders feeling comfortable joining us and the way 4* has evolved as the season has gone on. What has made the difference is that although we do have a wide range of abilities all the riders respect each other, there is no problem waiting to regroup. no egos, just like minded cyclists out to enjoy themselves. Thanks everyone and particularly Messers Smith, Hall, Talbot, Stokell and Jarv for sharing out the leads to ensure we completed the programme for the whole season. 50ks,av 18ish | ||

Description:For our penultimate ride of the season a leisurely outing to Childrey, a round trip of about 11 miles. We'll use some of the cycle routes through Wantage (A338 , Adkin Way, Stockham) en route to East Challow, where we'll take the track and bridleway across to Childrey. After a rest by the village pond, we'll drop down the bridleway to West Challow. Following a short stretch along the A417, we will continue to Denchworth, where there is the option for a sociable drink at the Fox PH. If you will be stopping at the pub and then cycling home. you'll need lights.Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. Report:A heavy shower at 6pm didn't bode well, but having donned waterproofs and overshoes, the rain stopped and the sun came out. Amazingly, despite all the dark threatening clouds around we had a dry ride.A select group of 3 this evening. For a change we followed the Mary Green (shared-use) path as far as Sharland Close and then continued onto main Street via Cane Lane. The wiggly route continued to East Challow where we stopped for a rest before tackling the bridleway across to Childrey. Fortunately, the vegetation had been cut back since we last came this way. At this point, we decided to take the road route back via Challow Station and Goosey. Finding a "road ahead closed" sign as we left Childrey, we decided to press on, but found no obstructions at all, just another sign at the A417 end. Having the wind and sun behind us made for very pleasant riding and we were soon back in Denchworth, where we said goodbye to John. A most sociable evening then ensued in the Fox before riding back into Grove in the dark. | ||

Report:Actually a ride with no Davids on it - maybe DB and DY were still recovering from our Saturday 88 mile Ridgeway epic?The ground was a bit wet from earlier rain, and dark clouds threatened, but nothing was actually falling, so off we went via a slightly slippery Crab Hill, Lark Hill and then up Jolly Green Giant to get to the Ridgeway in the straightest possible line. Then it was another straight line west along the Ridgeway. Gradually the threatening clouds passed over and we had a pleasant view and ride across the downs. Reaching Sparsholt field, we turned right, enjoyed the blast down hill and then picked up the mostly road route through to the pub. | ||

Round the Isle of Wight | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Lymington Pier |
Description:UPDATE 28th Aug :- Ride is definitely on. If you want to ride be at the ferry in plenty of time for the 08:40 ferry. We won't wait for late arrivers.Now in it's 6th year this classic CTC Wantage ride will explore the Isle of Wight. This year I've re-instated the Blackgang Chine climb. The route is a combination of the Round the Isle and the End-to-End routes. Avoiding some of the more unpleasant sections of both. We will catch the 08:40 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (£14.20, tickets bought before sailing online or at the ticket office), bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 30 minutes. We will be avoiding the Bestival weekend again this year although it is a Bank Holiday weekend so roads may be busier than usual. There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (£6.20 for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines. You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding. We will car share as much as possible. There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes) but there is a café at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast! The route will take in stunning coastal roads, quaint inland villages, seaside resorts, bustling sea ports, ancient ruins and buildings. Pretty much everything this magnificent island has to offer! We'll stop at the Old World Tea Rooms in Godshill for a late morning cuppa/comfort break. Lunch stop will be at the CTC Affiliated Toll Gate Café near Bembridge. We'll aim to stop for afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes. But if we are seriously delayed we will take refreshments on the return ferry (probably the 17:05 or 18:05). The route is pretty tough with few flat sections and several stiff climbs but is very scenic. Distance is 110km (68 miles) with 1,500m (5,000 feet) of climbing. We will cycle at touring pace averaging around 20kph (12.5mph). Expect around 6 to 6.5hrs of actual cycling time and bring/wear clothing appropriate for the weather forecast. Please let me know beforehand if you are coming on the ride and be sure that you are comfortable riding the distance/hilliness/pace! |

Report:Six riders at the start of the 2015 edition of the IoW ride. Conditions were bright and fairly warm.With the extra distance added I decided to cut off the climb to the Needles and head straight to Freshwater. This meant we could make the best of the morning sunshine along the south coast of the island to Ventnor. Turning inland we headed to Godshill for elevenses. On returning to his bike Ken found he had a flat and after repairing joined us a bit further up the road. On the next descent BANG. Ken's front tube had exploded. Further inspection revealed a massive hole in the sidewall of the tyre which the new tube had blown through. Luckily Ken was carrying a spare tyre and after replacement we continued. It became overcast as we approached Bembridge and with a few spots of rain in the air I decided to cut off the trip to the pier and headed straight for lunch. Ken decided to skip lunch and headed off on his own to complete the ride. As the rain started to fall we ate inside. After lunch light rain greeted us as we headed towards Cowes. Despite being a cycling friendly island the section through Wootton Bridge is bloody awful with zero cycling facilities, it's busy and unpleasant. They really need to improve this section. We arrived in Cowes for the chain ferry which is now 40p per bike and walked through the town. The rain became more persistent and heavy as we had a brief stop at the kiosk on the beach. It was possible we were going to make the 17:05 ferry but we needed to get a move on and we did. Despite the heavy rain we were flying along back to Yarmouth, we might not have seen or appreciated the scenery much but it was good fun! Arriving just before boarding began we were back in Lymington at 6pm. Excellent stuff! Well done everyone, fantastic riding and great company | ||
