Description:PLEASE NOTE THIS RIDE STARTS FROM OLD MILL HALL IN GROVE, NOT WANTAGE MARKET PLACE!Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. We will make a day of it for a 64 mile ride at 2* pace. Out from Grove to Highworth. The across to the North side of Swindon to view the housing development (!) because I like the route from there around into the water park and on to South Cerney. We then head over towards the Windrush and back home skirting Faringdon. 9.30 start from Old Mill Hall expected back late afternoon Tea / lunch stops planned at Highworth and the Cotswold Water park with options later if we wish. |

Riders:Clare HazellKatherine Boyce Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Riders = 5 Weather:Report:A small but perfectly formed group decided to believe the weather forecast and set off from Grove. Admittedly the rain had stopped but the wind decided to face us all morning. None the less we headed off towards Highworth and were rewarded for our efforts with a great cafe stop.The meanderings around north Swindon are always interesting but if you have to build lots of houses they have done it well at Tadpole and we were soon into the open country and lanes around the Cotswold water park where we also had lunch. Finally with the wind behind us we enjoyed some quiet roads toward Lechlade and then onto skirt round Faringdon. It was lovely to have the wind at our back for the return journey home. Well done to Clare for her longest ride and to Richard for taking most of the wind in his face. | ||

Easy on A Sunday Morning Off Road Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Regular off-road rides for 2019 we are toning these down and keeping them closer to Wantage. Free parking at The Beacon, and meet at Wantage Market Place, by King Alfred.17 miles and only one climb up to the ridgeway. This ride includes some secret single track near Harwell - nothing technical, just good fun and suitable for all. The weather forecast is excellent - come and have a go for some off-road adventures! |
||
Report:A very busy Wantage Market Place greeted the 5 riders today, as it was filled with a fair along with a whole bunch of stalls and attractions. We quickly left all the commotion behind and headed out through West Lockinge and up Goddard's Brook to the Ridgeway. A gentle breeze aided our progress towards Scutchamer's Knob (what a great English name!), before a super descent down towards the Harwell campus. We then tested our single-track and tree avoidance skills through the woods by Hungerford Road, before returning to Wantage via East Ginge and Ardington. Overall a super little ride in perfect weather with great company. The very definition of "Easy on a Sunday morning". | ||

As such it will be ridden at the higher end of the pace range. Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. We will take this bridging challenge based on a longer distance and a slightly higher speed, rather than lots of hills. So we have a west Vale loop, out via Goosey to Uffington, then across to Fernham followed by the long straight road to Shellingford and Hatford. We finish off through Charney Bassett and back through Denchworth. 21 flat miles - should be fun! |
||
Report:A strange week of grey skies and lots of rain meant a sense of impending doom as we gathered in slight drizzle. As always on these occasions, you wonder why anyone would come out - but they always do!In the event, we got a bit lucky and managed to get round without the weather closing in and we stayed dry, although it was pretty cold. Some had dug out their winter clothing, some had stuck with shorts - "it's the summer, after all!" Des had to dash back to the car to rescue his car keys (or some such dubious excuse) and then he mysteriously reappeared in Uffington buying chips. Still not sure how that worked... The 3* group decided to do the same route in reverse which as a fun idea as we crossed over exactly on half way. Thanks to all for braving the conditions! | ||

Picnic Ride to Duxford | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.To mark this year's Bike Week a sociable ride to the lowest ford on the River Thames at Duxford to be followed by a picnic in Hinton Waldrist. We'll ride out via Lyford to Southmoor and cross the A420 on a canny bridge to reach the village of Longworth. We'll stop in a lovely hidden corner before continuing on to Hinton Waldrist. Here a road drops down into the Thames Valley and Duxford. The ford is reached by a stretch of bridleway, but after the recent rain, we'll need to proceed with care and the ford may be higher than usual. So while we may be able to paddle, we may not be able to cycle across. There is a short climb back into the Vale from the ford, but this is on a very quiet road (cul de sac) which everyone can take at their own pace. We'll regroup for a picnic tea by the church in Hinton Waldrist. Please bring something to sit on and refreshments. We'll return to Grove via Lamb Lane and Charney Bassett, a round trip of about 19 miles. This is a Bike Week Event and all are welcome including families. As we will be visiting the ford, please note that all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The ride will be at easy pace following quiet country lanes with no-one left behind. |

Summer Solstice Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:4:15 am |
Start Location:Wantage Market Place |
Description:I’ve been closely following the forecast for tomorrow and we’re good to go but probably wise to remember rain gear as there are likely to be showersThe mad one where we get up in the early hours and head off to Avebury. So as promised here's this years solstice ride. This years ride is slightly longer (135km) and the ending is even less tough than last year. We'll start by wending our way up to the Ridgeway via Hackpen Hill to watch the sunrise before heading off Lambourn and then on to Ashbury, Fox Hill and Chisledon. Here we'll use the 24 hour garage for a first breakfast stop - coffee and pastries! Then on to Avebury and Devises before returning via Hungerford (second breakfast at Tutti Pole) and then returning to Wantage via Kintbury and a cunning route to Chainhill and the glorious swoop back to Wantage. As ever this is a tough ride but well worth the effort - some exceptional views and because we are going so early we get to take roads not usually suitable for group rides. Please make sure you have lights and snacks. It would be great if you could let me know you are coming, so if necessary I can let the Tutti Pole know we are coming. |
||
Riders:Bill FlocktonClare Hazell Eddie Little Hugo Pile James Bosley Jenny Gower Jo Little Karl Blake Katherine Boyce Pete Wrench Sharon Bedford Terry Penn Riders = 12 Weather:Report:Well what a splendid ride. The sunrise, hills, headwind, weather and company were epic! Tweaks to last years ride meant a skip up Hackpen rather than a slog up Chainhill. The reward was a fabulous sun rising over the misty vale.As we left the garage at Chisledon and our first breakfast, it started drizzling. Avebury was a wet blur, which didn't stop us admiring the avenue of stones as we left the village. But by the time we got to admire our second white horse at Alton Barnes (a bit grey and not as good as ours) the drizzle had disappeared and it started warming up properly. By 9.30am we were at Hungerford ordering our second breakfast. We weren't impressed that a torrential downpour waited for us to exit the cafe and reach the Common. Jo ensured Terry didn't lose us and Pete acted as go between groups when the level crossing at Kintbury prevented a swift reunion. We said goodbye to Jenny and Terry at Boxford. Hugo kept our spirits up by showing us how to ride into a hedge with aplomb and emerge without a scratch. A chance for some to stretch their legs on the final climb to the Ridgeway (for the 4th time ) before the swoop down Chainhill with plenty of time left for lunch. Thanks to everyone that helped make this such an enjoyable ride, hopefully we'll do it again next year | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:After the faster and hillier ride last week, a more gentle and flatter offering this Tuesday (and fingers crossed for warmer weather!).A tour of the village greens: visiting West Hanney, Lyford and Charney Bassett, out-and back through Denchworth. A round trip of 12 miles.Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:Our 1* regulars are a hardly bunch and despite a heavy shower at 6pm and leaden skies, there were four of us for this evening's 1*. There were a few spots of rain as we made our way to Denchworth, but nothing much. We continued sedately to West Hanney and enjoyed a relaxed chat on the green before riding on to Lyford. Here we stopped by the small patch of green before reaching the church. Martyn spotted a barn owl in the adjoining field and we watched transfixed for the next 10 minutes or so while the owl swooped back and forth across the top of the long grass hunting. On several occasions it reared up as if to swoop and twice it did. The second "kill" was close to the road to Charney and we cycled round in the hope of seeing the owl from there. By then, however, it was gone.We continued on to Charney Bassett and green #3, where we saw a family of swallows wheeling overhead. By this stage time was getting on and, deciding to leave Goosey green for another day, headed straight back to Grove. And none too soon; light rain started to fall as we left Denchworth. I got home just before the main shower broke. Thanks all for a memorable ride and to Martyn for the self-timer selfie. | ||

Riders:Clare HazellDavid Jackson David Talboys Eddie Little James Bosley Jane John Jo Little Joy Arthur Julie Haynes Kirsten Smith Nicole Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Roger Turnbull Stephanie Haddrell Susie Turnbull Yvonne Bird Riders = 16 Weather:Report:Despite a weather report that predicted possible rain and thunderstorms there were 16 of us who were willing to risk it. We split into two groups, but kept close together - which proved very sensible in the circumstances. The ride began well with warm, dry weather and a sighting of 4 deer at the base of Dragon Hill.Unfortunately Kirsten caught her wheel in a rut under a railway bridge between Uffington and Longcot. As she came down she also brought down David J and Dave T. Both KIrsten and David were looking as though they had potentially broken bones so an ambulance was called but, after an hour, it had not been dispatched so other ways were found of dealing with the situation. I now need to thank many people: Joy for her first aid at the scene NIcole and Roger P for their traffic calming/control Susie for leading the rest of the ride back to Grove John and Carin Tranter for coming to collect some bikes Kirsten, David and Dave for being so brave and not making a fuss about their pain or the cold and damp conditions or the non-appearance of the ambulance. Steph for lending me her jacket Eddie for all his phone calls to the ambulance and to JT Finally, and especially, Roger P and his wife Juliet for taking Kirsten to Swindon hospital. As people may know, Kirsten has a badly displaced shoulder joint and severe bruising, but was able to attend her graduation on Wednesday. David has a broken scaphoid and lots of bruising. Dave T was being very tough and wouldn't admit to more than a sore back. Thankfully we have come off more lightly than it seemed at one time. Sorry for the long report but I just wish to finish by thanking everyone for their support and teamwork both throughout the whole evening and since. | ||

We set out via Crab Hill just in case Mike was waiting by The Nelson (nope) then up Lark Hill and Bitham, down to Lands End and straight back up the Ridge.Then across to Harwell and through the woods by the campus. We were going to add a bit more on, but the rain felt like it was starting again, so we headed back on the NCN, Jason peeling off in Wantage and Chris and I heading back over Crab Hill to Grove. | ||

We then climbed up our second climb The Holloway and had a great descent to coffee and cake at Coleshill.We crossed the border into Wiltshire and went up our 3rd climb up to Fresden and onto another short climb to Shrivenham (back into Oxon). Riders:Chris BaileyEddie Little Hugo Pile Jo Little Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Nick Stokell Riders = 7 Weather:Report:7 hardy folk set off to ride the heatwave. Climbing Chain Hill before 8am, made for a kinder ascent, with fewer motorists, although the tractor wasn't confident enough to overtake us, luckily some random traffic lights ensured he didn't follow us all the way to the Ridgeway!Crossing the M4, we then had an interesting encounter with a large group of Banjo club cyclists. Some of them met a fast car on a narrow road on a steep downhill, luckily we had enough warning to stop on sixpences and the very grassy bank prevented injury to the Banjo rider that somersaulted over their handlebars in an attempt to avoid the by then stationary driver. Even I was shocked by my language Luckily the outcome was a dropped chain, how no one sustained an injury I have no idea! The way the driver persuaded himself he'd done nothing wrong was interesting. Think we were all glad for the Hungerford coffee stop, in a nice shady courtyard. Water bottles filled we were off into the wilds of the Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire hills. The views were as outstanding as I remembered, with occasional pauses for photos of poppy fields, windmills and lovely views. Despite Crofton Beam Engine only having been open for an hour, it was heaving. The temperature was certainly beginning to rise and we were all really glad to have started early. Some were already starting to suffer. With no shade outside we elected to stay in the cafe for lunch. The service started slow but got quicker as more experienced staff were drafted in to the front. The speed of the sandwiches was unbelievable! The last 30 or so kilometres were hot. We dropped the speed to ensure everyone was accommodated and had frequent pauses to allow all to rehydrate. Down Spring Hill on a dry road was no problem for anyone and then there was the frequently shaded roads back to Membury and Lambourn. Never before had I realised just how unshaded the road from Lambourn to Hackpen was. We parted ways at the Ridgeway, all feeling satisfied with what we had done. I'd like to say a really big thank you to everyone for their patience and fortitude. I felt that this was our club at it's best and illustrated why we choose to cycle as club riders. | ||

Oxfordshire Tri-vets and Annual Century (100-mile) Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Islip Village Hall (OX5 2TA) |
Description:Update 25 June: We are now 35 riders, almost full. I have made some minor tweaks to the route and a new version is linked below. Conditions on Sunday are looking good and not as hot as on Saturday.UPDATE 17 June: The refreshment stops are now confirmed and the route is attached below. To speed things along, we will need to pre-order lunch; the menu will be circulated shortly. There are a few places left if you haven't registered yet but would like to join us. A chance to tackle an Imperial Century at a steady touring pace, with refreshment stops at 25, 50 and 75 or so miles. This year's Oxfordshire Century Ride will form one of a series of Triennial Veterans' Rides (or Tri-vets) taking place across the country in June and July. The Tri-vets rides date back to the CTC's golden jubilee year of 1928 and are aimed at riders over the age of 50 (although our ride will be open to all ages). Riders have up to 12 hours to complete a route and receive a certificate to commemorate their achievement. This year's ride is being run as a lighter version of the rides that we organised in 2016, following the format of our Annual Century, as a led ride with three refreshment stops. As in 2010, 2013 and 2016, the ride will start from Islip village hall but with a revised route that retains some of the best bits of the old route with some nice variations to enable us to use different refreshments stops. To avoid filling the village hall car park, please could riders park at Islip Railway station, which is free and about 400m from the village hall. We will provide further details to all participants. Coffee: Cotefield Garden Centre, Bodicote Lunch: Ramsden Garden Centre Tea-time: The Horse and Jockey PH, Stanford-in-the-Vale All participants will need to register in advance as we are having to limit numbers to 36 (3 groups of up to 12 cyclists) on a first-come first-served basis. To do so please complete the google registration form available here: Cycling UK Oxfordshire Tri-Vets Application |

Riders:David GreenDes Higgs Eddie Little Hugo Pile James Dawton Jane John Jo Little John Tranter Julie Haynes Karl Blake Martin Casey Nicole Pethybridge Nigel Hughes Pauline Casey Peter Hallowell Rebecca Broadbent Steve Swanton Yvonne Bird Riders = 18 Weather:Report:It was a beautiful morning as 34 riders gathered in the sunshine at Islip village hall for the start of our 2019 Century and Triennial Veterans’ ride. There was strong representation from Wantage with regulars from Oxford City, Midweek and Wallingford groups plus guest riders from near and far (including Milton Keynes, Swindon and Suffolk). We would have been a full complement of 36 but sadly Robin had to pull out due to illness, and Barry with bike problems. A big thank you to John for agreeing to lead Robin’s group at short notice.The 3 groups left at 5-minute intervals with the group of younger vets first, and my “slower†XI with 4 septuagenarians third. With me were Julie, Karl and Des, David Green (Oxford City) and Peter (Midweek group), who had kindly volunteered to sweep, and 5 guests: Jane from Sussex, Sally and Sylvia from Milton Keynes, Colin from Freeland and Ian from Oxford. This is the tale of our day. The first 25 miles to Bodicote took us north into less familiar and rolling territory winding our way up the Cherwell Valley. Through Tackley, Rousham and the Astons, we took the climbs steadily and regrouped regularly – there was no point in rushing at this stage of the ride. The views across the valley were lovely. From North Aston there is no road north and so the route turned eastwards with a nice long descent into the valley to cross the river and canal at Somerton. With no road up the valley either, the only way was up the other side and we climbed steadily to the picture-perfect village of Fritwell. To go north we had to join the rather busy B4100, passing through Aynho, but after 3 miles we could relax again on quieter roads into Kings Sutton. Here we stopped on the small village green to admire the slender spire of the church that is so prominent from the M40. Shortly after, we crossed the Cherwell and the Oxford canal for the final time and ascended steeply to the edge of Adderbury. A short stretch of A4260 brought us to Cotefield. We turned into the garden centre just as John’s group were preparing to leave and joined James’ group in the café courtyard for a rest and refreshments. Last time we came to Cotefield the garden centre was surrounded by fields. Now there is a housing estate, but it did provide a useful cut-through to Old Bodicote with its ironstone houses and church. We joined NCN5 for the steep descent to Sor brook and climb up the other side to the delightful miniature windmill sitting in the middle of a wheatfield. A nice stretch of flat then downhill brought us through the ironstone village of Bloxham and on to the Barfords. The steady climb to Ledwell passing Nether Worton Hall, was the longest ascent of the day. We continued after a short rest and were soon dropping into Sandford St. Martin. Here we joined my favourite part of the route, winding through narrow lanes Clevelly and on to Enstone. We had reached our highest point before the gentle but fast descent into Charlbury and the Evenlode valley. On through Fawler, we dropped down to cross the Evenlode by Ashford Mill, to turn sharply uphill at first and then more gently towards Wilcote Grange and Ramsden. After the second longest climb of the ride, our lunch stop at Hilltop G.C came as a most welcome relief. James’s group were still there and it was nice to catch up with their progress before they headed on. Our pre-ordered lunches came quickly. Following lunch, the ride became easier – mainly downhill to picturesque Old Minster Lovell. Then, after the climb out of the Windrush valley, came the fastest section of the ride on the gentle descent through Brize Norton to Bampton. There had been a nagging westerly breeze all day, but riding westwards to Clanfield was straight into the wind making this a tough stretch. I appreciated Des and Karl taking a turn at the front. From Radcot the approach into Faringdon with green fields skirting the hill right up to the town centre is always attractive. After a good rest at the top, we continued through town and on via Fernham Road into the Vale, enjoying a great view of the White Horse from Fernham Hill. We were now on familiar roads and the sun was shining. As we approached the Horse and Jockey, we passed James’s group on the way out. Robin was waiting for us in the rear courtyard with a lovely treat – cake! We enjoyed a welcome cup-of tea, snacks and a good rest. By the time we set off on the final quarter, spirits were refreshed and the evening light was beautiful with barely a cloud left in the deep blue sky. And at last we had the wind behind us. Through Pusey, Hinton Waldrist, Appleton and Cumnor, we made good time and all enjoyed the long descent into Botley. Here, one of our visitors, Jane, left us to return to the youth hostel having nearly completed her century. We joined the cycle path to take us safely over the A420/A34 interchange and on to Wytham, then turned eastwards to cross Port Meadow, past the riverside Trout Inn and entered leafy North Oxford at Wolvercote. A section of the Woodstock Road brought us down to Marston Ferry Road to join its segregated cycle track. With 5 miles and 30 minutes to go, there was some late drama and jeopardy as Karl picked up a puncture and ripped tyre in the Ferry Road underpass. I took the main group on, while Des and Peter assisted. Out through Old Marston and on to Woodeaton, the final ascent to the B4027 was taken with determination and there was great relief to see Islip ahead with a final downhill to the river. After a final brief climb up to the village hall, we finished at 20:19, 3 minutes inside the cut-off time of 12 hours 7 mins for the full 101 miles. And to make the day, Karl, Des and Peter arrived just over a minute later. A great sense of achievement and smiles all round as celebratory pics were taken and certificates awarded. And au revoirs from our guests until 2022. A big thank you to my group for good company and a most enjoyable day’s riding and to Peter for sweeping. Thank you too to James and John for leading the other groups, to Eddie, Jo, Jane and Yvonne and all those who helped with sweeping, and Robin for all the admin of the event and to Kerry for the cake!
