Riders:Carin TranterJoanna Houlston Lorna Swanton Michael Tayler Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A lovely evening for a mellow ride (despite the flying ants in the OMH car park) and it was great to have our largest Tuesday 1* group since May. A warm welcome back to Joanna.We followed the route as planned visiting Stockham via the old airfield path, which was new to several riders. We stopped to catch our breath after the hill in East Challow and then enjoyed the panoramic views from the bridleway as we continued on to Childrey. All too soon we were in Sparsholt and turning back. The descent from Childrey on the B4001 to the A417 is always fun and after a short burn down the main road to Goosey we continued more gently back to Denchworth and Grove. Thanks everyone for your company. A joy to lead. | ||

My group cycled the route clockwise at a speedy 14.9 ave mph, thank you to Nick for swapping in to take the wind! Jon's group took a slightly different route (operator error, the reverse route I had sent him was private - meaning he couldn't open it!) We still managed to cross paths about half way round, just outside Hinton Waldrist for a group selfie. Timing eh!A truly beautiful evening's ride in the vale. | ||

Tuesday Evening Off Road Ride (Gentle) | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Continuing our series of first-Tuesday-of month gentler paced off-road rides.Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
||
Report:Joined by Tim on his e-bike - a first for us. He made the climbs look easy while we were puffing and panting!But in the twisty turny woods, the tables were turned as nimbleness came into play! But it was all good fun and we re-grouped after each section and chatted as we rode along, out to the Ridgeway, down Ice Valley, up to Scutchamers Knob, down to Harwell, through the woods and back. | ||

Leader:Stephanie Haddrell |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This is an optional 2* ride to Blakes in Clanfield for coffee at about 11.30. This is not a led ride. Meet friends at 10 at OMH to ride out together out via Littleworth Radcot and back via Bampton and Buckland. Alternativelyyou may ride out independently to meet at Blakes. |
||
Riders:David BridgeDes Higgs Ernie Trimble John Groves Karl Blake Patrick O'Leary Paul Bentley Stephanie Haddrell Susan Holdroyd Riders = 9 Report:Road to Denchworth was closed so to go out to Blake's would have been a 35 mile route. The assembled riders were given this option; or the alternative which was a 21 mile route out to Childrey for coffee via the Letcombes and back via Kingston Lisle Baulking, Goosey, Lyford and Hanney. With strong winds, rain forecast, some tired legs and jobs to do in the afternoon we decided to go to Childrey. A sensible decision as we had a lovely ride. The coffee stop at Childrey was good, although a little busy, the company great and we got back before the rain! Happy days. | ||

2* Saturday Half Day Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Des Higgs |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.A ride of 35 miles / 56km to the west, via Hatford, Shrivenham and Bourton to a coffee stop in Ashbury. Then an easy route home through the Vale. |
||
Report:At the third attempt we finally made it! The weather was good in spite of poor forecast, just a period of slight drizzle for a few minutes, we struck it lucky.We took a slight detour to Bourton as the usual route has deteriorated (the road is almost unrideable).. On the return we took another detour through Kingston-Winslow, I found a road that Roger hadn't been down! The views from the spring line were excellent with clear views across the vale. Rogers front mech decided to misbehave, but he soon put it right and no other mechanicals. A really good ride with a very good group. Thank you all. | ||

Oxford Urban Safari 1* ride (north) | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Seacourt Park and Ride, OX2 0HP |
Description:UPDATE 10am Sunday: the weather forecast is not great, but the ride is ON. We will go ahead and try to dodge the showers!NB: please contact me to pre-book your place. Booking is open! A very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside and canalside paths and quiet streets to do a 17 mile 'urban safari' around Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is almost entirely traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Parking is at the Seacourt Park and Ride on the Botley Road (bring 2 pounds in coins or pay by card). Note there is a 2m height restriction on the entrance so let me know in advance if you have bikes on a roof rack for further instructions. We use the separated bike track on Botley Road to get to Osney, then up the river, across Port Meadow to the canal, up to Wolvercote and then through the exclusive back streets of leafy Summertown until we get to the Marston Ferry Road. Then there is a fascinating series of hidden tracks and roads through to the Oxford Brookes University campus (including an unexpected manor house), a swoop down to Florence Park and a final section of beautiful riverside towpath. Some of the tracks will be rough in places, but all bikes should be OK. Really interesting - don't miss it! 17 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph. |
||
Riders:David PillDiana Whidborne Howard Houlston Joanna Houlston John Tranter Nick Portsmouth Roger Postbeschild Sarah Lewis Terry Ryland Tim Waite Riders = 10 Weather:Report:This was another ride where we got lucky with the weather! Rain was forecast and dark clouds were all around, but we stayed dry.It was great to welcome Dave and Howard to their first club rides and generally lovely to lead such an enthusiastic group. As always, the route proved to be interesting and lots of tour guide gossip took place. Also as always, Headington Hill House with its strange Maxwell family connections was a highlight. It was really nice to see improved surfaces at a number of places, most notably along the Oxford Canal all the way up to Wolvercote and the new separated cycle path through the Osney Mead Industrial Estate. Thanks to all for a very nice afternoon out! | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:This week we are heading to Garford, where we'll visit the small church in a farmyard. We'll be riding out on the Cow Lane track over the railway and on to West Hanney. This is stony in a few places but suitable for all types of bike. We'll return on road via Lyford and Denchworth, a round trip just under 13 miles.This is a pre-bookable ride. Riders:Kevin HazellLorna Swanton Michael Tayler Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Tim Waite Vyvyan Hazell Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Great to have another good 1* turnout on what was a lovely sunny evening for a ride. A warm welcome back to Vyv and Kevin.The off-road route to West Hanney was new to some and apart from the stony descent from the Hanney Lane railway bridge, needing care, makes for a enjoyable alternative to the roads. Indeed, as we rode onto West Hanney green we were surprised to see the 3* group passing in front of us having come the long way round! I had forgotten how pleasant the winding lane out to Garford is and we didn't see a car until we reached the village. We cycled round to the small church behind the farmyard at Millets Farm and took a break for a natter and look round . As we cycled back to Lyford in the lengthening shadows it started a cool along the lanes - a reminder that it does start to get colder towards sunset at this time of year. At Lyford we encountered an RAF helicopter on landing/take-off manoeuvres and had a very good view of it on the ground close to Lyford Lane. We were able to cycle through the roadworks on Hyde Road into Denchworth and there was much rejoicing at the new surface along Brook Lane - "no potholes!" was the call. Back in Grove just after 8pm. Another enjoyable ride to lead; thanks everyone for your company. | ||

Several newcomers and returning riders, along with the regulars. Due to Denchworth road closures the ride was slightly longer than planned at 24Mile but this was a pleasure given the conditions and the company.We rode out via Asti Stud via Charney and Pusey to Hinton Waldrist and Longworth dividing into smaller groups according to road conditions, although thankfully the roads were remarkably quiet except for cyclists! At Longworth checking the tail end of the group Steph had a mechanical and Tony Clarke and Ian Howland stopped to assist, Thanks to Sarah Lewis for steaming ahead and informing the group and grabbing David Jackson to return. Roger stepped up as group leader and saw the group home safely taking a cheeky detour through the 'closed roads at Denchworth. Puncture repaired Tony, Ian Steph and David continued the planned route through Fyfield and Fyfield Wick and as we approached the Hanney road Ian had a puncture! Now fully rehearsed in team puncture repairs we sorted that one and returned via Charney and Asti. A lovely evening with great company, thanks to all for mucking in! | ||

Riders:Chris BaileyJoy Arthur Katherine Boyce Lisa Footner Richard Ashford Roger Turnbull Sharon Bedford Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Always interesting to go East. Slightly late leaving OMH, ended up following the 2* group to Denchworth, interesting to observe the cars approach to so many cyclists in a short space! We went through the road closed signs to reach Hanney and as expected, fine for cyclists. The planned changes to the route, worked and the lovely new cycle path going out of Didcot was particularly good, although I am still trying to work out who would be using it and where they would be going as it doesn't connect with any of the surrounding cycle network.We availed ourselves of the non-car way up from Upton to Chilton that will hopefully become permanent (and does tie in really well with the surrounding cycle network) and deviated from the planned route to use the cycle path to Harwell site. Very good to start with and a bit iffy towards the end - almost at the Icknield Greenway standard! We avoided the Greenway and used the farmers track to Ginge, with a nifty exit courtesy of Roger. Thank you all for being such a great group to 'lead' and not giving me a hard time for so much off-road | ||

Oxford Urban Safari 1* ride (south) | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Redbridge Park and Ride, OX1 4XG |
Description:NB: please contact me to pre-book your place. Booking is open!Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs. A re-run of a ride pioneered in 2019, this is a very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside paths and quiet streets to do a 13 mile 'urban safari' around the south and centre of Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is mostly traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Parking is in the Redbridge Park and Ride at the southern end of the Abingdon Road (bring 2 pounds in coins or pay by card). Note there is a 2m height restriction on the entrance so let me know in advance if you have bikes on a roof rack for further instructions. We head north through the strange sliver of a suburb known as Grandpont, cross the river on the fascinating Gasworks bridge and then head into the centre of town. A mini-tour of Jericho before a VIP coffee stop at St Cross College on St Giles (you only get in if you are friends with the Bursar!). Then I will give you the insider gossip as we pass through the epicentre of Oxford, under Hertford College's Bridge of Sighs, and eventually down to the river at Folly Bridge where we head along the towpath past the College boathouses, pop up into the lovely Iffley village and Rose Hill before continuing along the river to Sandford. We then have a couple of miles back through Kennington before some unexpected underpasses get us back to the start. I'm really pleased with this one - don't miss it! 13 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph. |

Riders:Andy PixtonCarin Tranter Diana Whidborne Howard Houlston Joanna Houlston John Tranter Katherine Boyce Michael Tayler Peter Hallowell Ros Hallowell Sarah Lewis Steve Swanton Riders = 12 Weather:Report:Another great day for another great urban safari. Despite major traffic problems on the A34, everyone made it to Redbridge in good time. It was impressive that many had ridden to the start anyway, notably Andy and Katherine who were in the middle of what turned out to be an 80 mile ride!All went according to plan and it was fun to show off some of the more unusual features of Oxford. The coffee stop at St Cross was nice and we were even able to take advantage of the newly installed marquee. Choir and organ practice floating out from the chapel of Pusey House was an added bonus. Lots of fun touristing then followed as we wound our way through the centre of town and out to the river. We also enjoyed the lovely surface on the Sustrans track to Kennington before heading back to the cars. Thanks to all for your great company! | ||

Regular Wantage Ride - Oxford Special | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:NB: Wednesday update - the ride is FULL.All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. NB: start at Old Mill Hall, Grove. A re-run of a classic all day Oxford ride, this is a fairly gentle ride, only really designated 3* by the total distance (around 90km / 57 miles). We will go out via Hanney, Steventon & Sutton Courtenay to Long Wittenham, then cross the Thames at Clifton Hampden and go through the Baldons to Garsington and Wheatley. Then a super cunning cut through to Shotover and Headington for lunch at the Butchers Arms pub (confirmed - they are looking forward to seeing us). Suitably refreshed, we pass the house with a shark in the roof and drop down Headington Hill right into the heart of Oxford for a bit of light tourism / tourist dodging (some Bursar's secrets will be revealed). Then we head north to Wolvercote, round Port Meadow to Botley and Cumnor, followed by a gentle run home via Fyfield and Standford in the Vale (with a potential shop stop if, for example, ice creams are called for by then). |
||
Riders:Barry StantonDavid Jackson Des Higgs Gerry Jones John Tranter Karl Blake Lizzie Hardingham Roger Turnbull Stephanie Haddrell Susie Turnbull Riders = 10 Weather:Report:Yet another chance to take a group into Oxford - always a fun thing to do. This ride was action packed even before we started, when Roger and Susie realised their bikes were locked to the bike rack by a cable lock and they hadn't brought the key. No problem, as it happened Des had an angle grinder in his van...Once we got going, all was well and we rolled along nicely, particularly enjoying the smooth new tarmac at Denchworth. Everyone coped well with the hills at Garsington and Wheatley and, although the track at Shotover was rough, we all got through unscathed. Great lunch at the Butcher's Arms in Headington followed by a good swoop down Headington Hill, touristing through town, enjoying Port Meadow, conquering Cumnor Hill and heading for home. Thanks to all for great company - particularly impressive to see Barry and Gerry handling a longer ride so magnificently. | ||

Report:A very relaxed ride - with a select group of five. At the start I was trying to think of a better way across Wantage to the Letcombe turn - to reduce the time on the main roads(!). Steve S kindly stepped a s"guest leader" for the first couple of miles, with a nice winding route through the estates (did not quite get the impromptu "coffee stop" chez SS but hey ho). This cut out much of the main roads so was well worth it.Periodic stops to relax, whilst building up for the "main strain" of Holborn Hill. This was tackled with aplomb, and we were able to enjoy the descent into Childrey. All smooth from there via the track and through West Challow. Later on, brief stop on the railway bridge on route to Denchworth, with yours truly sharing a dubious cheesy joke with the group (Day job being kept). Then the final stretch via Denchworth and home. Thanks to Steve S for scenic detour at the start. Much better than the main roads... Thank you everybody for a lovely ride. | ||

David lives in California, but the mountain biking there is famously not as good as The Ridgeway, so he came over to see what all the fuss was about 😄We picked a relatively easy but fun-packed route, with a climb up Goddards Brook being the gentlest way up The Ridgeway, then taking advantage of a slight tailwint to blow over to Harwell, meeting quite a few pieces of heavy agricultural machinery blowing dust on the way (cough cough). Down at Harwell, and a full round of the twisty woods, before heading back to Wantage on the new Icknield Greenway (with a couple of greener diversions). | ||

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:RIDE MOVED TO SUNDAY due to the poor weather forecast for Saturday. There are places available if anyone else would like to join us.Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. Please text the ride leader to book your place. It is a while since we headed South on a Saturday 2*, so a chance to stretch our climbing legs and take advantage of summer fitness with a ride down to the Kennett valley. We'll head out through the Letcombes and Lambourn before taking the quiet back lanes from Eastbury through Woodlands St Mary to Hungerford. After a coffee stop at Honesty Cafe, we'll cross Hungerford common and continue along the Kennett valley through Kintbury to Hamstead Marshall. We'll recross the Kennett and canal at Marsh Benham and then wiggle our way through quiet lanes to Boxford. This will bring us back over the Downs the easy way, via Leckhampstead and Brightwalton before the final glorious descent of Chain Hill. At 42 miles, this is a slightly longer and hillier than usual Saturday 2* route but all at a steady 2* pace, regrouping regularly to catch our breath and enjoy the views. Don't miss! |

Lots of traffic prior to Sparsholt Firs, with all drivers but one being courteous and considerate.Great to wave at the MTB crew (thanks for the photo Richard) at Sevenbarrows. We were very impressed with their perfect timing Howard’s first decent of Blowingstone Hill went well, not as swift as John’s, who as a veteran of the hill showed the rest of us how it could be done! Big leader fail when we discovered we were 2 down in Grove. Chris went to investigate and the others were persuaded to go home and I followed Chris to discover what was going on. Andy had a flat at the bridge and Richard had assisted. Another use of the CO2 canister before Grove and Andy made it home. Thanks to Richard and Chris for outstanding teamwork. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Report:Heading roughly Southeast tonight. Gramps Hill to the Ridgeway - ouch, what a climb! Then over to Seven Barrows for a gloriously rutted descent. We saw the road ride (2* or 3*?) at this point!Instead of turning north after them, we headed south, them further west across the gallops, eventually making a climb up to White Horse Hill just in time to enjoy a wonderful sunset. Then back on Ridgeway, to Sparsholt Field, where the descent and the lower route via the villages was preferred to more climbing! | ||

Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing = 700m. A route heading North to Charlbury. Assuming the group wants to, we will stop for a coffee / snack at 40k at Carterton (most likely take away from Lynwood - unless its rainy). Then we will stop for lunch at Charlbury Garden Centre at c67k. Ive not been there before but I've spoken to them and they tell me they have lots of outside seating and there is no need to book. Hopefully a good day out on roads we haven't ventured on much this season. |
||
Report:Just 4 of us venturing out today on this Bank Holiday Saturday.My first time leading on roads I wasn’t familiar with, but thanks to the Farcycles website (which helped me identify some great roads to cycle on) all went off OK. Just one small glitch in Charlbury when I decided not to trust my Garmin (silly me) which meant that instead we had to go the wrong way down a one way street. I was very grateful that everyone happily dismounted and pushed their bikes a few hundred metres. Quiet roads first thing but we had to be patient crossing some of the main roads later on. Both cafe stops worked well and would use again. Great company. Great weather. Overall, just a great day to be out on a bike. | ||

Riders:Barry StantonDavid Jackson Des Higgs Gareth Smith Gerry Jones Ian Howland Karl Blake Sarah Bowen Sarah Lewis Stephanie Haddrell Val Smith Riders = 11 Report:A lovely evening for a flat ride out to Uffington cool with a moderate breeze to encourage pace in order to get back to the Fox for well earned refreshments!We spilt into two groups one of 6 and one of 5 for the ride and a special thanks to Gareth for leading the second group! With the wind in our favour as we left Grove, we set off at a good pace and soon warmed up, getting into a comfortable rhythm. With no mechanicals and little traffic we made excellent time to Baulking, and just as we were discussing the state of the Uffington road we met a road closure sign, and so opted for the short cut through to the Fernham road from Baulking. From here there was just one focus beer and food, and the pace increased; Sarah was keeping up with me and I was keeping up with her and so we just got faster until the boys put us in our place and steemed passed us from the Buckland crossroads into Charney doing a steady 19 miles an hour, as we looked on in awe secretly hoping they would get the first round in! True Gentleman Des held back to keep us company and the others stopped and waited for us at Charney ( I think they wanted us to get the first round!!). We made it safely to the pub and enjoyed great company and joie de vivre over a lovely pint and meal, some of us even had puddings! We were also thrilled to see Lizzie who joined us for a drink. Thanks to all for great company and a lovely evening. | ||

Report:We picked an unusual route for this one, heading south as far as we though viable, before coming back north.This turned out to be Fawley, and it was good to do some frequently covered trails in the opposite direction. We saw lots of deer - 20+ I think, in 3 separate herds. One group crossed the trail not far in front of us, and we paused a while to make sure they were all gone before continuing. It was good to be back at The Fox after more than a year, and the Ham, Egg & chips were well appreciated! | ||
