Robin Tucker
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Off-roading in the dark is an experience you must try for your cycling life to be complete! Knobbly tyres and lights required.

About 15 miles up to the Ridgeway and back down again. Sometimes, by agreement on the night, we might go a bit further.

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove 3*
Leader:
Iain Kent
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
From Grove heading towards Wantage and then picking up the B4507 as far as Ashbury. Then the B4000 to Shrivenham. Further North towards Lechlade via Coleshill then looping East to Bampton. Stopping for refreshment at Aston Pottery then heading back to Grove via Buckland, Charney Bassett and Denchworth. Not an especially hilly route although 'lumpy' out towards Ashbury and then a couple of climbs at Coleshill and Buckland. Weather permitting, with an average of approx 15mph we should be all done by 5.30pm. 45 miles, lights will be essential.

Report:
Thankfully the deluge forecast earlier in the week did not materialise and the nine riders enjoyed dry conditions. The 32 miles to the cafe seemed to pass quickly without event and all the riders stayed pretty much together. David and Ursula left us at Aston (did not need refreshment!) and headed back to Newbury. The rest of us enjoyed a tail wind on our way home and were also treated to glimpses of the sunset. We just about achieved the 15mph target....I was actually home by 5pm with the kettle on..... can't be bad! Thanks to all for a smooth and enjoyable ride.

Richard went on his own:

26km from Hanney over the railway bridge at the sewage works (good), then NW to Denchworth (ploughed!), NE back to Hanneys (fast track), through to the Steventon road (grim), E to the old canal (bumpy, unpleasant), cutting SW then S on Ardington Lane, looping back up behind Lains Barn and linking N to Old Man's Lane and back to Hanney. A big figure of 8 and good in parts, but all in all not recommended.

Just two of us tonight, but the weather was good and by mutual consent (I think) we decided that a longer ride was in order.

We set of via Crab Hill and Goddards Brook to the Ridgeway. Down Wether Down, across the road between West Ilsley and Farnborough and up Old Down (a killer climb!) Then fun time going down the gentle slope from 460804 and the twisty singletrack to near the A34 by East Ilsley. Then up the Ridgeway, under the A34 and down again. And back on the Sustrans route.

Phew! A great ride - aching legs, but well worth it.

Regular Wantage Ride 2*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Don't miss this one (and note it starts in Wantage)! In response to good discussion at the AGM, this is a 2* all day ride. Almost entirely flat, leisurely riding - but with the chance to see Oxford from some very different angles. Out via Hanney and Fyfield, down Cumnor Hill and then a cunning route parallel to the A34 up to beautiful Wytham and Wolvercote. Down through wealthy North Oxford to lunch at the amazing Zappi's bike cafe in the heart of town. Then my patented secret offroad route out of town along the river and through to Botley. Back up Cumnor Hill (we will need some exercise..) and home via Wooton, Tubney and Charney Bassett. Total distance about 50 miles.

Thanks to everyone for such an encouraging turn-out on a cold and misty morning. Fourteen riders, and quite a few doing their longest ever ride - which was exactly what this ride was designed for! All went according to plan, with some nice views across Port Meadow and an interesting loop down the Oxford Canal and through Jericho. Zappi's bike cafe was a great success, although we pretty much swamped the lone server with our orders. The secret riverside route to Botley is always fun and after the one climb of the day, it was pretty straightforward to home. Congratulations to all for the achievement and thanks for your company.

We left Grove soon after 1pm with 13 riders. Weather was windy which made some stretches of the ride much harder than others. The route we followed was almost exactly as planned except that we had to use the cafe at Key gardens (at the top of Steventon Hill) as we did not expect to get to Ardington in time. Arrived back just as it got dark.
