3* Saturday Half Day Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Jo Little |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:The Beacon |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph).To Coleshill via Lambourn and Ashbury - meaning we can go all the way down the hill from Ashbury hill, as promised! Back home via Great Coxwell, Uffington and Fawler Hill. |
||
Report:It was foggy over the downs as we set off and a headwind, cold and rain made the ride up to Ashbury quite unpleasant. Luckily there was room inside at Blakes at Coleshill for a very welcome cafe stop. As we got back to the vale the sun came out and made the end of the ride quite pleasant. We all agreed that we were glad to have come on the ride, despite the hills and changeable weather.Happy birthday to Barry and thank you for more climbing tips. Thanks to both of you for being good company. Lets hope the next ride is a bit warmer! | ||

Riders:Barry StantonChris Marchant Des Higgs Paul Bentley Pauline Clark Roger Postbeschild Roger Turnbull Terry Ryland Riders = 8 Report:A very good turnout with a lot of old faces returning (could be the weather - which wasn't too bad compared to previous rides of late). No problems at all, riders and machines up to a very high standard.Cantorist Farm wasn't too busy so we got served fairly fast. Only problem was the 1* group had taken all the sausage rolls, so we had to make do with cake and hot coffee! We came back via the Letcombes where there were some closed roads due to surveying an underground waterway which had caused floods. We dropped a few off in Wantage so rode with 5 left to second coffee at Costa in Grove. Good ride with good company - thank you, all! | ||

Description:Ride out to The Cantorist for coffee.Heading out to Letcombe before Childrey for Coffee. Unfortunately we have to Tackle the hill up Ickleton road in order to get to Letcombe avoiding the floods. Fortunately the hills will be over before coffee so the return will be a breeze! If you have overshoes please wear them as the roads are still quite wet! Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Report:A beautiful spring morning for a ride and lovely to see so many assembled at Old Mill Hall for both 1*and 2* rides. So good to have some girls out on the ride for a good old natter!We headed out on the planned route towards the Letcombes tackling Ickleton road to avoid floods. It was a great descent to Letcombe Regis and then onto Basset lovely to see the Daffodils out and the feeling of warmer weather to come. We paused at the top of Holborn Hill to catch our breath before riding into Childrey for a great extended coffee stop at the Cantorist where we were joined by the 2* group. After coffee we stepped out into winter, the wind was cold and precipitation was in the air, so glad that the return route was less challenging and we road to Goosey and Denchworth and back to Grove. Thanks to all for the company. | ||

Leader:Stephanie Haddrell |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A 38mile Ride out to Root One for coffee, one of my favourite local Garden Centres. Lovely gift shop and superb plants with specialist advisers, and a great cafe, because 2* rides are all about the Cake!We are heading out Ardington and the cycle path to Milton, skirting around Chiltern and taking cycle paths through Didcot before tackling Sires Hill and making our way to Root one for coffee and cake/Brunch. Once suitably refreshed we will head up to Wittenham clumps, this being the final climb of the day as the return route is in the Vale via Appleford, Drayton and the Hanneys. A slightly Longer half day ride return expected around 1.30pm Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. |
||
Report:Well it had been a difficult week with bike and technical problems but both were resolved( thanks Roger!) and a ride out with friends was just the ticket!We headed out to Lockinge and onto the cycleway to Harwell with a rather challenging head wind which continued for most of the morning. We road on to Upton and then along the cycle path to Didcot lovely to be off road although the path was busy with cyclists dogwalkers and horses! Arriving in Didcot we navigated the plethora of cycle paths before joining the road, up sires Hill and then onto Wallingford. It was a relief to be out of the wind and to refuel with some hot food. The way back was to be less challenging with a tail wind, having got the hills out of the way immediately after lunch all was fine and dandy. ... or so I thought as I admired the views and the purpose built mountain bike track in the woods coming out of Long Wittenham, It hit me literally...a bollard! Thankfully, apart form a few bruises and feeling very foolish all was well. Thank goodness for a tail wind for the return journey and good friends! We all made it back safely via Drayton Steventon and Hanney to Costa. | ||

Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:9:15 am |
Start Location:Beacon Car Park |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader.Not sure whether you should plan a ride around a cafe ….. but why not? I have been wanting to go back to Tray's Cafe in Hungerford for quite a while now so a Saturday Ride gives that opportunity. Slightly longer than a normal half day ride - 65k with hills - but hopefully some lovely scenery along the way. |
||
Report:The weather was much nicer than forecast and we managed a dry ride to Hungerford and back. We even commented it felt like spring when the sun came out.The roads were mostly dry - although we had to be careful on the minor routes due to gravel and other debris - actually having to get off and push on a short section above Eastbury. Tray's Cafe was a little busy - but it had the warm and friendly welcome I had remembered and the cakes, (cheese scones and apple crumble muffins) got a big thumbs up. A hilly ride but everyone coped well and there was lots of friendly chatter along the way. Thanks for being a great group to lead. | ||

Coffee was taken at a favourite independant cafe, Faringdon Coffee House, where the coffee and samosas were up to their usual high standard. Apart from the climb up Folly Hill, it was pretty much downhill all the way home......well, a ride leader would say that! Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:10:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Note the **Morning** start timeA venture northwards this time.... Denchworth, Charney Bassett, over to Pusey (sneaky cut through if conditions permit), and on up to Hinton Waldrist/Longworth, with cafe stop at "Munch" in Southmoor/KB, then back via Lyford (and past Fyfield Wick if time). Just over 20 miles. Back at Grove, c 2pm (ish). Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 12-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs. |
||
Report:A pleasure to be out. Nice select group of five of us to enjoy the weather as it (gradually!) gets warmer.A warm welcome to Lucy on her first ride! Smooth running - the option of the cut through Pusey was discussed, and quickly eschewed as too risky of being muddy, so continued round the road route. Plenty of time to stop at various points to chill. After our stop by the church in Hinton Waldrist, slight mishap/collision between Steve B and Anke. Anke ended up off her bike, but all OK - just the brief task of bending Steve B's mud guard back into place! Then continued on the path linking HW with Longworth. this turned out to be a bit more muddy than we had ever seen it before, So a bit of walking required, and no doubt some cleaning of bikes later on...(!) Nice relaxed stop for refreshments at "Munch" in Southmoor or Kingston Bagpuize... debate was had as to which it is actually in.... then nice relaxed return via Fyfield Wick and Lyford.. Thanks everyone for a lovely ride! | ||

Not suitable for irregular ridersTrying again to do last months all day ride and hoping the weather proves kinder to us. We'll head,via Great Coxwell and Little Faringdon, to Coln St Aldwyns (27 miles) for our first stop at the community shop/cafe, . Then return via Aston (44 miles), with an opportunity for another cafe stop, before Great Brook (if it's not flooded( and then tackling Buckland hill. 57 miles in total but only 576m of climbing, so should be doable at this time of year. |
||
Riders:Barry StantonJan McCabe Jo Little Lisa Footner Nicole Pethybridge Paul Smith Sharon Bedford Yvonne Bird Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Rain the night before had left us all a bit uncertain about the road conditions and we had mixed results. The section between Coleshill and Lechlade was so flooded one kind driver offered to give us a lift across! Barry had a puncture here that was quickly mended. The next section from Lechlade to Little Faringdon was so full of potholes it felt more of an off road ride. After that, though, the roads were great, the sun came out and it turned into a good ride. The cafe at Coln St Aldwyn is highly recommended - they even served us, though we turned up as they were closing. At Bampton garden centre Yvonne, Barry and Paul carried on for home and other commitments while the rest of us had a second cafe stop before heading back for Grove.At over 100km, for some of us, this was the longest ride we'd done for many months, so it felt good to complete. Report:The weather gods were kind, it stopped raining at 9.00 and then stayed dry, with a reasonable breeze from the Southwest. Pip was sporting shorts - I wished that I had been later!It would appear that Louise was not deterred by her first club ride on Thursday - she was out again, this time sporting a shiny orange gravel bike - much easier going than the mountain bike used on Thursday! It didn't finish up quite so shiny.............. Stanford Coffee Shop was doing brisk business with breakfasts but we managed to find a quiet and comfortable corner in the lounge area. The only mechanicals were Pip plugging a hole in his tubeless tyres and Louise sorting out the vagaries of Sram gear changing on the new bike. | ||

Few hiccups at the start but eventually most of us left and naturally split into 2 groups as traffic warranted, which made leading very enjoyable .Straightforward route to Kennington via Garford and Sunningwell for a first time (for me) at the Proof Social Bakery. The long queues were definitely worth putting up with for the yummy baked goods and excellent coffee. Luckily outside was sheltered and sunny as there were no seats inside. Richard caught up with us as we neared the end of the queue- a fitting reward for a heroic dash to join us! The one hill was easily conquered and provided a different approach to Boars Hill. The descent wasn’t as bumpy as remembered, with just one horse to pass gingerly! Joy disappeared swiftly into a nagging headwind as we approached Appleton so she wouldn’t be late for a social engagement and soon the rest of us were going our separate ways in Grove after a splendid mornings riding. Not suitable for irregular riders.An away day ride taking in some rolling Cotswold countryside and the water park. We meet at Cotswold outdoor centre, Spine Road East, South Cerney, GL7 5TL Cirencester, Gloucestershire which has plenty of parking. South Cerney is 29 miles from Wantage. We'll cycle past some lakes before heading out into the countryside. Our first stop is at Hobbs House Bakery in Nailsworth, which serves an all day breakfast. The longest, steepest climb of the day is after that and then it's mostly downhill or flat after that, as we go through Tetbury and skirt Malmesbury before heading back to the water park. Our second stop is near the end of the ride, at the Dragonfly cafe near Oaksley. They are right by one of the lakes and should provide a welcome coffee and cake before the last few miles back to the car park. 54 miles, with 800m of climbing, all in the first half of the ride. |

There were some floods - with one being deep enough for us all to get wet feet - but it wasn't too bad over the whole day. After the stop at Nailsworth came The Hill! A climb lasting 4 miles with one section registering at 18%. After this we had an interesting gated road section with so much debris that some people felt safer pushing their bikes. However, it gave Jan the chance to test out her new gravel bike. At Oaksley we had a cafe stop at The Dragonfly Cafe - a cafe by one of the lakes and highly recommended. Then it was only a few miles back to the car park.Thank you to Sharon and Kath for taking the headwind and to everyone for being such great company to cycle with. Report:Great to see Karl back on his bike! We headed out on the planned route to Letcombe via Ickleton road and on to Childrey Spartsholt and Westcott, before heading along the spring line to Kingstone Lisle. The roads were suprisingly quiet and conditions fine, well no rain at least! Once in Kingston Lisle we road into Uffington and then through Baulking , Goosey and back to Grove for coffee at Costa.A lovely ride great company and no mechanicals so all good. | ||
