Report:
Perhaps it was the light rain at 5pm, the overcast skies and the cool breeze or the fact that it was the day after a bank holiday, but only 11 of us gathered in the square this evening compared to over 20 last week. (Neil running late phoned Jan to find out the plan to catch us on the road.)
We headed north to Charney as planned, but given the conditions and the group I suggetsed an intermediate route - straight up to Southmoor and back via West Hanney. No sign of Neil at Southmoor, but he finally caught us (a tad hyperventilated) as we reached Hanney. Back to Grove just before 8 in deepening glom but we had again avoided any rain. Good to see Chris W and Sid out for the first time this year.

Report:
A group of 11 started out, reluctant to leave the nice dry shelter at the shops... before long we were puffing and panting up Court Hill. At the top we bade farewell to Jan Sweet who put in a valiant effort, but on discovering that her computer was calibrated to km and not miles, meaning that yesterday she managed 12km, and not 12 miles she originally thought, decided that 60km might be a few too many!

The rain continued as we rollercoastered our way over to Chieveley via Brightwalton and Peasemore, only interrupted by Richard's obscure phone conversations about where he'd hidden the mushrooms. Finally it was downhill all the way to the very welcome tea stop, in a lovely warm and dry coffee shop at Hillers Garden Centre in Hermitage.

Further rollercoasters followed to Boxford via Curridge and Winterbourne, with a couple of long drags taking us up to the B4494 via Chaddleworth for a grin-inducing descent back to Grove arriving at 5:30.

The stats for the ride are:
Elapsed time 4:14:41
Distance 63.0 km
Ascent 720m
Average speed 21.4 km/h
Maximum speed 73.1 km/h

Well done to everyone, and thanks Sid for the photo!

17 rider headed out of wantage in the direction of Denchworth. The plan was to climb some hills. We had three new riders out with us a father and daughter and a young man working in the Wantage area.we all started out together seperating into two groups at the bottom of the hill in west Challow on the climb up Silver lane. We then headed down a hill into Letcombe Regis and climed back up Court hill to the youth hostel. A fast desent down into Wantage where we pasted right by Alan's lodgings he attempted to leave the ride but was soon persuaded that we was'nt finised ywt and continued the ride back out of Wantage in the Harwell direction and back down through Lains Barn and into Grove. a very pleasant evening spent cycling.

Unfortunately, I was unable to lead the ride having pulled a muscle the evening before and Alice kindly stepped in to take my place (many thanks). Quite fitting as this was a ride she had introduced me to last year. I understand that 13 started the ride but that the attrition rate was rather high - with only 5 completing the ride back to Woodcote. Good to hear that Eve was out again and that Lucia and Dave R joined us too. Hope you all enjoyed it.

A pleasant ride through mostly traffic free lanes to Bibury for lunch.

The Catherine Wheel comes HIGHLY reccommended. Reasonable prices for the area, welcomes outdoor types and possibly the fastest food service I can recall anywhere that didn't ask "Would you like fries with that?" Des ordered his beer and his roast lunch and it arrived seconds after he sat down. Good roast lunch fresh nicely cooked veg for

We all left to go to West Hanney via Denchworth. Kevin got as far as the latter and decided that his legs were like jelly after the Sunday ride so he returned home. The remainder of us split up after Hanney, the fast group going around Fyfield to Longworth while the remainder went slowly onto Southmoor and over the bridge. By the time we reached Longworth the fast group was already upon us!! We all came back on the same route via Pusey, Gainfield and Charney Basset. Brian who had dropped back passed the slower group just before Gainfield and then somehow missed the faster group who decided to go on a detour after Charney Basset! When the slow group arrived back in Grove, Edith who had been leading the fast ride was on her way back to find Brian! I presume that he had just gone home and Edith finally caught up with him there. The fast group must have covered approx 35 kms while the rest of us took it very gently over the 30km route.

On leaving Millbrook Square to cycle the short distance home the heavens suddenly opened and I arrived home soaked as I am sure everyone else must have done also!!!

A warm welcome to new rider Mark.

We all left together through Denchworth and Goosey, after we crossed over the A417 we split into two groups, with the majority opting for the longer option (taking in the hill to Kingston Lisle and Uffington) only 4 of us opted for the short flat option, heading for Fernham, then back via Shellingford, Gainfield and Charney Basset, The faster group caught us up just on the outskirts of Grove, so we all finished the ride together
