What a pleasure to be out on a warmer Thursday morning with such a fine group of riders! We took our time and pedalled gently along, pausing by the walnut tree in Denchworth and the church in Lyford, taking in the surprising sight of 3 buzzards in a field on the way to Charney Bassett. Another pause at Gainfield before a leisurely break at Stanford Coffee shop, then a smooth ride back to Grove via Park Lane and Denchworth. Thanks to our two sweeps - Susan on the way to coffee and Kev on the way back - and to everyone for your company. Next 1* Thursday is March 3rd.

Report:
We set off from Wantage on a relatively chilly morning with light cloud & sun for good measure. For most of the the ride we had a pretty strong head wind with all riders coping very well! We had lots of hills to climb, but what goes up must come down! Great views through the Lambourn Valley & of the River Kennet at Chilton Foliat & the Kennet & Avon Canal at Froxfield & Kintbury.

An interesting time was had by all on one of the small lanes just the other side of Froxfield with all cyclists having to climb onto the bank with bikes giving way to a tractor carrying bales, followed by a convoy of around eight cars. Certainly a tight squeeze!

We all arrived in good time at Eliane of Hungerford to enjoy some delicious coffee & mouth watering cakes. As usual fast & very efficient service.

We set off over the common which was incredibly busy with cars. Once over the A 4 at Kintbury the roads were a lot quieter & that was the story for the rest of the ride back to Wantage. Unfortunately Joy had a puncture at Brightwalton, but this was fixed super fast by Roger. Many thanks to you Roger! A lovely ride with excellent company! Thanks to Roger for sweeping duties.

A fine morning for a ride and great to see 10 riders out. We headed off towards Goosey at a steady pace catching up on the weeks news! Unfortunately Carin felt unwell and decided to turn back and Di very kindly volunteered to see her safely home.
We then continued along the planned route to Goosey, and Baulking, and as we headed towards Fernham Barry had a minor mechanical with his chain which our very Modern cyclist Karl put right. Onto Shellingford and hatford and Stanford for coffee and cake where we had a good old chinwag and warmed up. The journey back to Grove was trouble free. Thanks to all for great company!

Report:
A lovely bright morning for a ride with a lovely group. We headed out as planned via the Letcombes and rested up at the top of Holbourn Hill before tackling Hackpen with a head on wind. John had been having a few problems with his bike and unfortunately had a major mechanical problem half way up, which cut his ride short. Thankfully Roger was on his electric bike and kindly went back down to assist John to be able to return home. Great job Roger! The wind at the top of the hill was arctic and we were all glad to be back peddling again although suprised that we indeed did have to peddle the long sweep down into Lambourn. We had decided that an early coffee was in order and so we made a minor amendment to the route going to Precilla's Kitchen in East Garston for coffee, bacon rolls, and brownies. We then headed off to Welford and captured the beautiful display of snowdrops as we rode past. On to Boxford, and as we turned to head towards home having the wind behind us was a welcome change! We went along some great country roads via Brightwalton and enjoyed the respite as we rolled down the hill towards Lilley and joined the B4494. We paused at Saddleback to admire the Deeor enjoying the sunshine on the Hill and continued our way along the main road back to Wantage. The descent from Chain Hill was thrilling although the cross wind was quite strong. After a brief stop at the bottom we bid our farewell to Gerry and made our way back along the cycle path to Grove. Thanks for great company, patience and teamwork in the face of some technical hitches. Special mention to Roger for his assistance- Thank you and to Rob for buying the refreshments to Fuel our journey on.

The calm after the storms (Dudley, Eunice and Franklin).
It was a bit squishy, but basically ok and a little cold. Better than expected really. We found one big tree across the way.
Our route was out on the path towards Lockinge, then up at Betterton, then over the other side and climb straight up again, chatting away as we do.
A left before the very top this time though as we headed down a farm track and back to the road into West Ilsley. Then up to the Ridgeway again and west. We were happy and somewhat surprised at the lack of headwind. Decided to go down at Ginge, and that's where we met the big tree down across the route. We couldn't move this one, so it was bikes passed over the top and then clamber underneath.
From there a mix of road and tracks took us back to Wantage.

The forecast was not good and so numbers were limited to the brave 5 of Steph, Des, David, Patrick and Tim. Having put the start time back half an hour we started out in bright sunshine which was a blessing. Out to Letcombes for a brief stop at the church to view the snowdrops and on to Childrey where we stopped as it was so beautiful. We enjoyed coffee and cake and decided to extend the ride to include Kingston Lisle, and headed off to Sparsholt where the snowdrops were in full bloom in the churchyard and the verge. Feeling virtuous we continued on our journey, caught a glimpse of Lizzie as we passed her house in Westcott and cycled up the road to the springline for the return journey. Well.... the weather changed in a jiffy and we were met head on with a barrage of hailstones, such fun! Once we turned into Kingstone Lisle we stopped briefly to catch our breath and then battled on to avoid getting cold! The storm quickly passed and we returned home in bright sunshine and decided that a hot lunch/drink in the Cornerstone would be a fitting end to an active morning.
Thanks for the company gentlemen and the birthday coffee Desx
