Moderate Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove
Leader:
Henk Altmann (deceased)
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Ride of between 60 to 70km at a pace of ~20-22 kph with tea stop.

A less hilly ride this month heading out across the vale to the Coxwells and Coleshill. Choice of longer (via Lechlade, Whelford and Hannington) or shorter loops to Highworth to be decided on the day. Tea at Brook's, back via Shrivenham. Longer route would be 75km (46 miles), shorter somewhat less. Riders welcome to join us for part of the ride or meet us at tea.

Report:
Super Saturday was not the best day for leading a ride in competition with the Tour de France, Wimbledon and F1 qualifying but nevertheless 6 stalwarts turned up for a tour through Charney Bassett, Hatford, Fernham, Little & Great Coxwell and Coleshill. A hard decision between a short route straight to Highworth and a long 13 mile extension through Lechlade, Whelford and Hannington was avoided by Steve S's proposal of an 8 mile detour through Sevenhampton and Stanton Fitzwarren. After tea in Highworth (to increase body mass for the downhill return), a tail wind allowed for a record time back through Shrivenham, Uffington, Baulking, Goosey and Denchworth. A total distance of 67km (42m) and 22km/hr (14mph) average speed were fully as advertised.

19 cyclist headed out over the air field towards Wantage and the Letcombes. plan was for the split to be made at the Letcombe turning, for the faster group to do sme serious climbing up Court Hill and over the Downs and back via Wooley Brightwalton and back down Monument hill and into Grove. however the group was split was made on Denchworth road just before the Ham RB sorrel had a puncture and the main of the group was to far ahead to stop them. I made the decision to catch up with the main group and tell them not to wait.the headed off on their ride leaving the slower group to fix the punctureand complete our ride. We headed on through Hamfield and climbed the hill to Challow cricket groundback down the hill to Childrey. crossed Wantage and Faringdon road. Goosey Charney Bassett, Lyford. Denchworth and back to Grove arriving back to see the faster group heading for home.

A very pleasant social evening was enjoyed by over 40 of us. A number of Oxford-based folk made the event into a cycle-camping weekend, camping out in Mavis's back garden. Good to see some cycling over!

Congratulations to Ginny on completing the iron-man triathlon in Austria the previous week. Tea shirt and medal were on proud display.

Thanks to Mavis, Sue and the cooks (Lou, Nigel and Pat) for another superb spread and barbie. Steve B ran the usual raffle and raised nearly

Report:
All started off well. I arrived at Wantage market in plenty of time only to find that the gears on bike did not work properly. Thankfully only Richard D turned up and willingly cycled to Didcot so that I could change bikes. We then cycled from Didcot through South Morton to Wallingford. We then headed on the B4009 to North Stoke and then South Stoke before cutting across to my original route of Ipsden, Ewelme to lunch at the Three Horseshoes at Benson. The main course was very pleasant but nothing could have prepared us for the size of the bread and butter pudding for dessert. I did not manage to finish mine and felt extremely weighed down for the cycle back - thank god it was flat!! We then proceeded to Shillingford Bridge Hotel and took the bridleway to Little Wittenham. Next on our route was Dicot via the Sustrans route 5 when it started to rain a bit. We then cycled to Steventon, Hanney to finished the ride just outside Grove. I cycled back to Didcot via Lains Barn. All in all a good ride with the weather being much better than forecast.

15 cyclist set off in the direction of Denchworth with dark clouds gathering to the west. We were heading towards Kinston Lyle. We made the split at Goosey were the road meets the Wantage To Faringdon road. Peter B headed off with the fast group planning on climbing common hill to Kingston Lyle and heading back down Fawler hill to Uffington however a mutinywas formed the rider did not like the look of the dark clouds gathering in the west. Eventually they headed back to wantage via th the Letcombes making it back with out a drop of rain > I led the smaller group with a young lad that 1st came out on the back on yer bike ride with his family, He did very well we managed to climb Common hill at a slowe pace and headed back home through Westcott, Sparshot, Childrey then climbing the path to East Challow and back to grove we also managed the ride without a drop of rain.

Weather was excellent after all rain and flooding over the weekend. 15 cyclist rode out into the vale heading for A420. with Neil at the head of the group we cycled out through Denchworth, Charney Bassett and down to the Southmoor RB where Neil and the faster group crossed the A420 heading for the Tunnel under the A420 and into Frilford and in Neils words the blasted up the A338 and back to Grove ride enjoyed by all. As for me and the slower group we were unfortunante and one off the group got a puncture which delayed our ride. However when we got gong again we headed back through the Vale via Lyfordand Denchworth with hardly a glimps of the floods ride enjoyed by all.

Think I was probably being optimistic and pessimistic in the same sentence, when I rang the lady at the cafe warning her to expect between 4 and 12 cyclists at about 3.00pm.14 of us turned up for the start(Oh well!At least I managed to guess the tea stop arrival time correctly!)Enjoyed a lovely ride across the Vale, initially with cloudy skies, rapidly clearing in the stiff breeze to reveal a perfect summers day. Thanks everyone for a great afternoons cycling.

Report:
We split the ride early this evening - Des's plan was to get out to Compton Beauchamp with the sportier group, so we bade the leisurely group farewell at Denchworth. A cracking pace was set through Charney Bassett, Gainford, Hatford, Shellingworth, Fernham and Longcot, where Kevin became the first to relent, texting Des his farewells.

Second (and temporary) "loss" was just after Longcott, where Chris Wyatt went (the wrong way) off the front and was chased down by Peter, catching up with the group again at the Downs Road, just above Compton Beauchamp. We eased the pace a little down through Kingston Lisle (saying our farewells to Liam on his first ride with the group - welcome aboard Liam!), and stumbling across the remains of the leisurely group coming in the opposite direction.

We returned through Goosey and the obligatory Denchworth, having dropped Chris Wyatt off the back - cycling over from Lambourn without any tea had taken it's toll on Chris - ah well - you always remember your first bonk - jam sandwiches next time?

Thanks to Des for leading the sporting ride - we covered 44.5km and averaged over 25km/h (that's 16 mph in old money), and there was concensus at the end that it was a fantastic ride, speedy, a little different to usual, but great nonetheless. As we panted our recoveries in the car park, the remainder of the leisurely group arrived, as did Richard out walking his dog!
